The Long Island Music and Entertainment Hall of Fame (LIMEHOF) is a 501(c) (3) organization dedicated to the idea that Long Island’s musical heritage is an important resource to be celebrated and preserved for future generations. The organization, which encompasses New York State’s Nassau, Su olk, Queens, and Kings (Brooklyn) Counties, was created as a place of community that inspires and explores Long Island music in all its forms. LIMEHOF, located in Stony Brook, is heavily engrossed in our local communities and o ers Long Islanders many ways to get involved.

Since 2004, their organization has Inducted over 120 music artists and related professionals who are now recognized in their new Stony Brook location. In addition to their large exhibition area, theater and o cial “Hall of Fame Museum”, the 8,800 square foot building is home to a beautiful performance area. Bike Safety Poster Contest For Fifth Graders

Town of Oyster Bay Supervisor

Joseph Saladino and Councilwoman Laura Maier announced the return of the Town’s Bike Safety Poster Contest, held throughout National Bicycle Safety Month. The poster contest is open to all 5th grade students in the Town of Oyster Bay.

“Nothing is more important than the safety of our children, and many residents have shared their concerns about bicycle safety as drivers and youngsters alike are often unsure of safe biking practices,” Supervisor Saladino said. “This poster contest was launched to begin

increasing awareness of bike safety guidelines in our community, especially as we celebrate National Bike Month this May and spend more time in the outdoors as summer approaches.”

To enter the contest, students must digitally design or draw a picture that illustrates safe bike riding. The poster should include simple language about New York State Guidelines for bike safety, which are available online at https://tinyurl. com/bikesafeny. The top three winning posters will be unveiled to the public during an official meeting of the Oyster Bay Town Board, and featured in a town-wide newsletter. Entries will also be displayed in a “Digital Art Exhibit” on the Town of Oyster Bay’s website.

“This program not only helps fifth graders become more educated on the serious issue of bike safety, it also helps them learn more about Town government and be recognized in their hometowns,” said Councilwoman Maier. “Last year’s contest entries were extremely creative and informative, and I look forward to seeing this year’s designs. We encourage all fifth graders to participate!”

Submissions should be made on 18” x 24” size poster paper and emailed to postercontest@ oysterbay-ny.gov. In their submission email, students are asked to please attach a highresolution photo of their poster as a PDF, JPEG, OR PNG file, as well as a completed entry form, which is available online at oysterbaytown. com/bikesafety. The submission deadline is Wednesday, May 31, 2023.

College Sports Is In The Future For 16 Seaford Seniors

“What a wonderful group,” Kevin Witt, director of physical education, health and athletics for the Seaford School District, said about the 16 student athletes who have committed to collegiate sports teams. Seaford High School held its annual college signing ceremony on the evening of May 1 in the gymnasium,

with administrators, coaches, parents and siblings there to celebrate the achievement.

Mr. Witt noted that nationally only 7% of high school athletes play in college. The 16 committed athletes represent about 10% of Seaford’s entire senior class. He noted that the college-bound athletes, in addition to shining in

their respective sports, are exceptional students who represent Seaford High School very well.

The athletes will be heading to colleges and universities on Long Island, upstate New York, the Northeast and as far away as Florida. The Seaford Booster Club provided a large sign with the college logo for every

athlete, as well as balloons in the colors of their future teams.

Electrical, EMT Programs Planned At Seaford High School

Seaford High School’s course offerings would be expanded next year with the opening of an Electrical Training Center and the addition of an EMT certification course. Both programs are included in the 2023-2024 budget proposal.

An Electrical Training Center is a nationally accredited vocational education program. Seaford would become only the fourth high school on Long Island to offer it and students would complete the training in one year.

Principal Nicole Schnabel said that an existing technology room would be converted to serve the program, and students would be there for four periods a day. Students interested in the electrical trades no longer would go to BOCES for two years. That would give them more opportunities to take other courses and get involved in student life

during their junior and senior years.

“The main benefit is that they’ll be here in Seaford High School, so we can maintain more of a connection with our students,” Ms. Schnabel said.

The program consists of three parts totaling 450 hours of training. Topics include introduction to the electrical trade, electrical circuits, device boxes, conductors and cables, HVAC controls and thermostats, residential electrical services, commercial wiring, basic fire alarm systems, customer relations and more. Students would also become familiar with common hand and power tools used by electricians, as well as how to properly handle materials. All instructors would be individually licensed.

The program would be open to seniors and several current juniors

have expressed interest in learning the trade while staying in Seaford.

“I want to be an electrician when I get older and this will give me more experience,” junior Justin Cettina said. “It’s really beneficial.”

Michael Wittenstein, a junior, said this will help him broaden his post-high school options.

Ms. Schnabel added that the program aligns with expectations for two- and four-year colleges, and also provides job placement opportunities. Every graduate receives a toolbox upon completion.

The emergency medical technician certification course would be in partnership with the Nassau County Emergency Medical Services Academy. It would be open to seniors and meet multiple periods a day for a semester.

Instructors would be provided by the EMS Academy. The course

would feature lifelike training exercises to help students prepare for multiple emergency response scenarios. It prepares students interested in volunteering or working in emergency medical services, as well as for careers in medicine, nursing and pharmacy.

There is also strong interest in the EMT program among juniors. Several students, like Alexandra Podesta and Jillian Gross, want to continue the family tradition of volunteering with the fire department.

“The EMS program will help me better educate myself,” said Alexandra, who is already in the Seaford junior fire department and wants to join officially when she turns 18.

“I’ve seen what they do for others,” added Jillian, who has many family members in the Wantagh Fire Department.

“I’ve always wanted to help as many people as I could,” she said. “Volunteering to be an EMT can make that happen.”

Residents are invited to nominate extraordinary individuals who have made a positive difference in our veteran

communities.

“The Town of Oyster Bay’s ‘Salute to America’ Celebration provides the ideal backdrop to recognize veterans and individuals who continue to actively serve in the community and advocate for issues and concerns relative to veterans. The Town is proud to recognize and honor amazing individuals who have helped to shape our communities for the better

through their continuing advocacy and exemplary community service each year,” Supervisor Saladino said. “I hope residents will consider submitting a nomination of an individual who deserves special recognition for their continued efforts on behalf of the veteran’s community. I look forward to recognizing the efforts of outstanding individuals who have impacted the

lives of our veterans in an extraordinary way yet again this year.”

Nominations are being accepted in three different categories of recognition: Veterans Volunteer of the Year (awarded to a veteran), Friend of Veterans Volunteer of the Year (awarded to a nonveteran), and Lifetime Achievement Award (awarded to a veteran or a non-veteran). All

entries must include a supporting narrative describing the nominee’s on-going veterans related activities, and all nominees must be Town residents. All nominations must be postmarked no later than Monday, June 12, 2023.

Beautiful Me Makes An Impact

Social worker Sharon Klein facilitated Beautiful Me, an initiative of the Hance Family Foundation. Each group of 10 to 12

students attended three onehour sessions. Beautiful Me is designed to enhance selfesteem, increase positive body awareness, improve

problem-solving and help build healthy relationship skills. The program was created in honor of three girls from Floral Park, Emma, Alyson and Katie Hance, who tragically died in a car accident in 2009.

During the first session, students reflected on personal strengths and the qualities they most like about themselves. On selfreflection handprints, each girl wrote her most beautiful strength and one of the most beautiful parts of her body.

The next day, they defined who they are, selecting words from a list of about 300 different characteristics. Lessons also focused on self-awareness and selfcare. Students learned how to maintain good body language.

Hundreds Celebrate Launch Of The Historic Ida May Oyster Vessel

Preservation Corporation, The Waterfront Center, and hundreds of neighbors to officially launch a replica of the historic Ida May oyster vessel into North Shore Waters. This launch is the culmination of a decades-

long effort to build a fullscale replica of the Ida May, one of the first ever enginepowered oyster dredges to serve our local waters.

“We gather in celebration to launch the newly constructed Ida May

oyster vessel for the first time,” Supervisor Saladino said. “After her retirement in 2003, the Oyster Bay community came together to ensure the legacy of the Ida May would live on for generations to come. The Christeen Oyster Sloop Preservation created a vision to preserve her history: completely rebuilding the Ida May and using the replica as a “floating classroom” to teach residents about

Oyster Bay. That vision becomes reality today.”

Originally built in 1925, the Ida May was one of the first ever engine-powered oyster dredges of her time. She served the local waters of the North Shore for over 75 years, but was too damaged to be restored.

“Together, we thank the Christeen Oyster Sloop Preservation Corporation – led by President George Lindsay – for leading the effort to keep the legacy

of the Ida May alive. This 44-ton replica was built almost entirely by volunteers and funded in part by a grant from the legendary Billy Joel. Now, the Waterfront Center will use this beautiful vessel as a teaching tool about our harbor and its history,” Councilwoman Vicki Walsh added.

Oyster Bay Town Awarded $500K Grant To Expand Electric Vehicle Charging Stations

In celebration of Earth Day, Supervisor Joseph Saladino and Councilman Steve Labriola announced that New York State has awarded the Town of Oyster Bay over $490,000 in grant monies to expand electric vehicle charging stations in the town. The largest grant allocated for a single Town statewide, this award recognizes the Town of Oyster Bay’s

vast commitment to environmental protection and sustainability.

“The Town of Oyster Bay has been awarded nearly $500,000 in state grant funds to expand our electric vehicle charging infrastructure,” Supervisor Saladino stated. “The Town has already installed multiple electric vehicle charging stations as we recognize the tremendous

need for eco-friendly transportation alternatives in our community, and we thank New York State for giving us the opportunity to continue these sustainable efforts at no additional cost to taxpayers.”

The funding comes as a part of the Department of Environmental Conservation’s Municipal Zero-Emission Vehicle Infrastructure Grant

Program. It will allow the Town of Oyster Bay to install 22 Level 2 charging ports and one DCFC pedestal for public use as the demand for electric cars continues to grow each year.

“Thanks to state grant funding, we will expand electric vehicle recharging stations throughout the town without using property tax dollars.

From cheaper vehicle maintenance to zero exhaust emissions and eco-friendly production, many community benefits can be derived from supporting electric vehicles. We thank New York State for recognizing our prior efforts to offer EV stations and for awarding us these grant funds,” added Councilman Steve Labriola.

In 2019, Councilman Labriola led a quality of life initiative to install and operate electric vehicle charging stations on Town property for public use. Since then, the Town has surveyed properties and the public to identity the best locations for installation. Most recently, an EV charging station was constructed at the Western Waterfront in Oyster Bay.
