Hope House Ministries www.hhm.org

Hope House Ministries is a non-profit organization located in Port Jefferson. They provide compassionate, comprehensive and competent care for the poor, the marginal and the wounded among us. This commitment is woven in the Gospel vision that all life is sacred and every human person is unique and has the right to be respected and protected.

They have accomplished much over the 40+ years they have been helping others with minimal financial assistance from federal, state or county agencies. They depend on the generosity of private contributions, fundraising events and corporate donations.

Hope House Ministries services people in both Nassau County and Suffolk County, offering services free of charge.

Together, their staff and volunteers have created an empowering sense of family and community that are the change agents, helping young people grow in self-discipline, critical thinking, problem solving skills and personal responsibility.

There are so many ways that this non-profit can truly help you get your life on a better track. Additionally, there are plenty of ways for people to get involved in helping others through volunteering.

Over the past 40 years, thousands of people have donated their time and talent to help this organization reach those in need.

In 2013, the founder of Hope House Ministries approached long-time supporters of this organization, Barbara and Arti, with an idea of a retail space that could bring in needed funds for Little Portion Frirary, a home which houses 65 young men in recovery of drug and alcohol addiction that is ran by Hope House Ministries. The hope was that the proceeds that would potentially be brought in from a retail space could pay for these young men’s college classes, food, utilities and transportation costs.

Some years later, the perfect location for a store was found and they decided to open up a beautiful boutique there. Since their organization is all about second chances, they called it Hope

Springs Eternal Second Chance Boutique.

This boutique is open to the public MondaySaturday from 11AM-5PM. You can expect to find beautiful items for sale here, such as clothing (some still with tags on them), household goods, and furniture. They only accept very gently used items and everything is cleaned and prepared for sale by a team of dedicated volunteers (the boutique is operated by volunteers only)!

The selfless efforts of their volunteers truly makes the store feel warm and inviting. After rent and utilities are paid, all the rest of the proceeds go directly to the organization, which helps those in need.

In addition to that, the boutique makes many homeless individuals feel loved and cared for by giving them items of clothing free of charge and allowing them to use their bathroom when needed.

If you are looking to make a difference right here on Long Island or if you are just looking for a special something, stop by the boutique located at 19 Cherub Lane in Port Jefferson Station and make a purchase! Full-time, in-person instruction resumed for all students at Seaford High School on April 21, the first time in more than 13 months that they have spent a nine-period day inside of the school.

It was a much-anticipated moment for Seaford’s freshmen, sophomores, juniors and seniors, who spent the year up until now in a hybrid learning model.

To reduce density during the COVID-19 pandemic, students were split into two cohorts and attended school for either the first four periods of the day or the last five periods, learning remotely during the other half of the day. On April 21, it didn’t

matter if their last name started with a letter in the first half or the last half of the alphabet. The two cohorts reunited and all safety measures remained in place including desk barriers, masks and social distancing. Students also retained the option of fulltime remote instruction.

“The faculty and staff of Seaford High School are extremely grateful that health conditions have progressed to the degree necessary to allow us to make the important decision for our school community to move to fullday, in-person learning for all of our terrific students,” Principal Scott Bersin said.

COVID-19 Emotional Support Helpline The Association for Mental Health and Wellness (MHAW) – Suffolk County’s largest not-for-profit provider of programs, services, and advocacy for people facing mental health challenges – is offering an Emotional Support Helpline staffed by trained crisis counselors who help callers talk through their emotions and find resources to help them cope with challenges associated with COVID-19.

MHAW is serving as a Suffolk County partner agency in the helpline

initiative hosted by NY Project Hope, a program of the New York State Office of Mental Health.

The Emotional Support Helpline is 631-4717242 ext. 1800. Trained crisis counselors are available Monday through Friday between 9:00 am and 7:00 pm. All helpline conversations are free, confidential, and anonymous.

“The Emotional Support Helpline will connect you with someone who has been trained to hear what you are saying and give

you the kind of support that works best for you during the pandemic,” said Tara Fredericks, MHAW’s Director of Special Projects who is also overseeing Project Hope for MHAW. “They can offer coping strategies, supportive resources, or simply a chance to talk.”

“As the leading mental health agency in Suffolk County, we’re proud that MHAW is well-positioned to play a leadership role in this timely initiative,” said Colleen Merlo, CEO of MHAW. “People don’t

need to grapple with these stresses on their own. NY Project Hope is offering great value during this difficult period.”

In addition to the Emotional Support Helpline, NY Project Hope helps New Yorkers understand their reactions and emotions during the COVID-19 pandemic through digital educational materials, a supportive social media presence, and a website with resources and relevant materials at www.nyprojecthope.org.

Other partner agencies in Suffolk County include the Northside Center for Child Development in North Bay Shore, Hispanic Counseling also in North Bay Shore, the Long Island Coalition for the Homeless in Amityville, and the Empowerment Collaborative of Long Island in Central Islip.

NY Project Hope is funded by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and administered by the federal Substance Abuse and Mental Health

Services Administration (SAMSHA).

EAGLE SCOUT ACHIEVEMENTS - Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino recently honored Jack and Kevin Sadler of Troop 690 in Seaford at their Court of Honor ceremony for recently achieving the rank of Eagle Scout. Eagle Scout is the highest honor a Boy Scout can achieve after completing hours of community service and attaining numerous merit badges. Supervisor Saladino proudly presented Jack and Kevin, who were joined by members of their family and Troop, with a citation in recognition of this prestigious achievement, which only about 6% of all Boy Scouts attain.

College Choices On Display is celebrated every year on May 1, so that with falling on a Saturday, members of the Class of 2021 had their gear ready to go on Monday.

Seniors gathered for the traditional photo in front of the school

at the end of the day.

They will be attending dozens of colleges on Long Island and New York City, in upstate New York, throughout the Northeast and as far away as Alabama, Colorado and Florida.

Teachers and administrators throughout the district joined in the celebration, wearing shirts representing their alma maters and decorating their doors. At the high school, it prompted lots of discussion between students and the teachers who once

attended the very colleges they will head to in the fall.

“During College Awareness Day and Week at Seaford High School, we congratulate all of our seniors on their post-high school plans,” Principal Scott Bersin said. “This time in our school is more a

celebration of seniors beginning to choose their paths through life than about any college choices. As always, we are overjoyed to watch the excitement our soon-to-be graduates possess about the possibilities ahead.”
