The Charity of the Month for May is: Bikers Against Child Abuse (BACA) www.BACAworld.org

Bikers Against Child Abuse is a 501(C)(3) non-profit organization. BACA formed with the intent to create a safer environment for abused children. They exist as a body of bikers to empower children not to feel afraid of the world in which they live. They stand ready to lend support to their wounded friends by involving them with an established, united organization.

BACA supports each child according to their individual needs. Some services available for the child and their family include a physical presence at the home (24/7 if needed), visiting the child at school, escorting the child to and from court, and they even maintain a therapy fund for children needing assistance.

If you are interested in becoming a BACA member you must meet certain requirements.

Some of them are that you have regular access to a motorcycle, are 18 years or older, can pass an NCIC fingerprint check, can attend monthly meetings and Chapter events and that you have a desire to help abused children. If you meet the basic criteria, you can eventually become a “Cleared Supporter”, which is when you are assigned a Patched Member as your “Sponsor”. This member guides you through extensive training, which goes on for a minimum of at least one year before you can be considered eligible to become a full Patched Member.

Their meetings are held the second Sunday of every month (unless it’s a Holiday) at the American Legion Hall in Bohemia at 9:00 a.m.

Seaford High School’s new Wellness Committee is a partnership of students and staff to promote physical and mental wellbeing. Its mission is to create a support system within the school so anyone seeking help has a place to turn.

A group of sophomores and juniors from the committee recently attended the Nassau County Youth Wellness Summit in Merrick.

Students attended a day of workshops, with the goal of learning methods and practices for wellness and mental health, and transforming their goalsetting, leadership and problem-solving abilities.

Samantha Lukaszewski, a 10th grader, said she learned to identify warning signs if someone is going

through a hard time. She noted the importance of having resources available in the school, including trusted adults to talk to and making sure that students are aware of the help that is available.

“We really want to take the initiative to spread this information,” she said. “We want to do the most that we can to save those who may be hurting.”

Jack Knox, an 11th grader, said attending the summit opened his eyes to the importance of mental health. He agreed with Samantha that there are so many resources out there for people who need help, and it’s crucial to make those better known.

Among staff members who attended the summit were Athletic Director Michael Spreckels and

psychologist Dr. Chelsea Emerman. They said that the experience opened up a great dialogue between students and staff about the resources that should be available at the school.

Dr. Emerman noted that students “know more than anyone else” about classmates who might be struggling with different issues, so their inclusion in the process as wellness leaders is extremely valuable.

The school also hosted certified teacher and suicide prevention advocate Roger Von Braun.

His presentation, “Bringing light to the darkness of suicide,” provided coping strategies and empowered students to live their lives with purpose.

Speak Up! A Gold Award Project Over the past three years, Seaford High School senior Katie Crawford has dedicated her time to educating local students and community members about the importance of public speaking and how to overcome the fear of it. She recognized that glossophobia, the fear of public speaking and the second most common fear in America, was a prevalent issue affecting the country’s youth.

Katie’s target audience was children in fourth to sixth grade. In order to prepare these students for their journey to middle school and beyond, it is essential to provide them with the tools to succeed in public speaking. Effective public speaking skills are crucial when it comes to job and college interviews,

presenting in class and holding conversations with both people in positions of power and friends and relatives as well.

She taught many public speaking clinics throughout Seaford, at the Manor, Harbor and Middle School, public library, Girl Scout troop meetings, local churches, and the Long Island Children’s Museum. Katie provided her participants with the skills and strategies they need to help them overcome their own fear of public speaking.

These skills include visualization, meditation and deep breathing, certain methods of practicing and, everyone’s favorite, power posing. With all of these skills now in their arsenal, Katie opened up the conversation about

how important public speaking is and asked if these participants felt their schools and communities should be doing more to support their success in this area. Through the use of pre and post clinic surveys, she learned that many adolescents this age are unaware of the impact public speaking has on their future and do not feel that their schools adequately prepare them. After sharing her findings with the Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum in the district, Katie feels hopeful that she has helped her community and provided all of these amazing kids the skills and confidence they need to make positive change and speak up!

A Tower of Nature Knowledge Seaford Manor Elementary School students are experiencing nature in a new way with the introduction of the district’s first tower garden. It is a vertical, portable garden that is able to grow plants indoors.

The tower uses an aeroponic growing system,

which means it grows plants with only water and nutrients, rather than dirt. Care for the plants is a partnership between the UP classes and the garden club. So far, students have planted basil, kale and lettuce, and there are future plans to grow flowers.

“We are impressed by how quickly the seeds have sprouted,” teacher Adriane Balsam said. “We hope to be able to share the garden with all the students at the Manor. Everyone seems curious and stops by to ask about it.”

Learning From Each Other The introduction of professional learning communities at Seaford Manor Elementary School has been creating a buzz among teachers this year.

Principal Debra Emmerich and Assistant Principal Mary Ellen Kakalos said the goal is to model lifelong learning for students by having teachers immersed in self-directed professional development.

Ms. Emmerich and Ms. Kakalos said the idea was sparked by educational researcher John Hattie and his visible learning studies.

Manor teachers were invited to join one of four PLCs based upon their interests and passions: visible learning, STEAM, mindfulness and Habits of Mind. Groups

included teachers from every grade level and gave them an opportunity to share ideas, best practices and educational articles during their monthly meetings.

“We do so much of our own professional development,” Ms. Emmerich said. “All of our teachers are a wealth of knowledge. They’re such valuable resources for each other.”

At the school’s Feb. 28 faculty meeting, the four PLCs came together to share information with each other.

Teachers were split into small groups, with at least one representative from each PLC, and rotated among eight different chat stations with discussion prompts. At one station, teachers shared

helpful resources about their respective topics, and at another they discussed how PLCs helped them grow as learners.

Ms. Emmerich explained that when teachers are passionate about a subject, the shines through in their instruction, which excites and engages students. That’s why teachers were given the opportunity to pick what they wanted to learn, and how they wanted to learn about it.

New PLCs will be formed at Manor on different topics relating to Columbia University’s Teachers College for Reading and Writing Project, a second-year literacy initiative in the Seaford School District.
