The Charity of the Month for May is LI Music & Entertainment Hall of Fame

The Long Island Music and Entertainment Hall of Fame is a 501(c) (3) organization dedicated to the idea that Long Island’s musical heritage is an important resource to be celebrated and preserved for future generations. The organization, which encompasses New York State’s Nassau, Su olk, Queens, and Kings (Brooklyn) Counties, was created as a place of community that inspires and explores Long Island music in all its forms. To date, the organization has inducted more than 100 musicians and music industry executives, and also o ers education programs and scholarships to Long Island students, sponsors the Long Island Sound Award, and features traveling educational exhibits, including a state-of-the-art mobile museum.

Last year, the organization opened its doors to their new awe-inspiring 8,800 Sq Ft facility in Stony Brook, NY, which features a large exhibition area, theater, performance area and an o cial “Hall of Fame Museum.”

All entry tickets include free parking and access to all their location has to o er. As a non-profit, your admission fee and donations help to support their Education Scholarship program for high school students and their Health and Harmony program, bringing musicians and entertainers to senior centers, hospitals and other places of need.

“For over a decade, the Long Island Music and Entertainment Hall of Fame has been delighted to distribute tens of thousands of dollars for scholarships, providing support to numerous aspiring professional musicians and music teachers,” said Tom Needham, LIMEHOF Education Committee Chairman.

The Hall of Fame is now accepting applications for their 2023 Student Scholarship program, where they will award $500 scholarships to graduating students. These scholarships will provide funding for eligible graduating high school students from Nassau, Su olk, Brooklyn, Queens, or Kings (Brooklyn) Counties who have shown an interest in pursuing a career in music.

It’s Safe Digging Month: PSEG Long Island Reminds You To Call 811 Before You Start A Project

April is National Safe Digging Month and PSEG Long Island reminds customers, contractors and excavators that the law requires them to call 811 before digging to ensure underground pipelines, conduits, wires and cables are properly marked out.

Every digging project, even a small project like planting a tree or building a deck, requires a call to 811. It’s the law. The call is free and the mark-out service is free. The call must be made whether the job is being performed by a professional or a doit-yourselfer. Striking an underground electrical line can cause serious injury and outages, and result in repair costs and fines.

“It’s spring once again, and people on Long Island and in the Rockaways are starting outdoor improvements to their homes and businesses. Calling 811 ahead of time helps protect underground utility lines and, more importantly, the safety of anyone digging,” said Michael Sullivan, PSEG Long Island’s vice president of Transmission and Distribution Operations. “Customers are getting the message. Last year there were more than 215,000 mark-out requests in our service area, and so far this year, there have been more than 44,000 requests to 811.”

According to Common Ground Alliance, a member-driven association of nearly 1,800 individuals and 250 member companies in every facet of the underground utility industry, 40% of active diggers in North America do not call 811 because they think their project is too shallow to require

it. All digging projects require a call to 811.

A free call to 811 in the service area automatically connects the caller to the local New York one-call center, which collects information about digging projects. The one-call center then provides the information to the utility companies, which send representatives to mark the locations of nearby underground lines with flags, paint or both. Once lines have been properly marked and confirmation from all of the utility owners is received, projects may proceed as long as caution is used around the marked areas.

Here’s important information to consider:

· Underground gas and electric lines are everywhere, even on private properties. These facilities can be easily damaged if dug into, with the potential to cause serious injuries. Digging into these lines can also disrupt vital utility services, resulting in costly delays, expensive repairs and environmental or property damage.

Whether the job is a major home improvement project or something as simple as a fence or mailbox post, a call to 811 must be placed beforehand to determine where it’s safe to dig.

Call 811 at least two business days before the commencement of each job to have underground pipes, wires and equipment located. Each facility owner must respond by providing the excavator with a positive confirmation indicating that marks are in place where utility lines are buried or that there are no existing facilities in the area of the proposed work. This service is free of charge.

Be sure to wait until all of the utilities have responded. Don’t dig until lines have been marked or you have received confirmation that the area is clear of facilities.

Property owners must maintain and respect the marks. Always hand dig within 2 feet of marked lines to find the existing facilities before using mechanized equipment.

If gas lines are damaged or there is a gas smell when excavating, call 911 immediately from a safe area.

Calling before you dig is more than a good idea − it’s the law. Additional information, including a booklet on safe excavating practices and the protection of underground facilities, can be found on the PSEG Long Island website.

Liberty Conducting Annual Spring Flushing of Water Mains

Flushing to Start in Seaford, South Wantagh and Wantagh on May 15th

Merrick, NY (April 24, 2023) – Liberty is commencing its annual spring flushing program as part of its routine distribution system maintenance to help ensure quality water service to Liberty customers. Starting May 15, annual flushing will begin in Seaford, South Wantagh and Wantagh. “Water main flushing is an important part of our operations and maintenance programs to remove harmless mineral and sediment buildup that

can cause water to become discolored,” said Liberty Director of Operations, Brenda Wall. “Our flushing program positively impacts water quality while also ensuring all fire hydrants are operating properly, with the adequate flow needed in the event of an emergency.”

Water mains are flushed by opening fire hydrants in specific locations throughout each community to increase water flow to the area. While crews are performing flushing operations, residents may experience a temporary drop in water pressure and/or discolored water. If you experience discolored water, please allow the water to run in your faucet until it is once again clear, which shouldn’t be more than a minute or two.

In order for residents to better prepare for flushing in their neighborhood, Liberty asks that they

consider the following tips and steps:

• Make note on your calendar of your community’s scheduled flushing times.

• Prior to using the washing machine and dishwasher, check for discolored water.

• If discolored water stains your laundry, do not put it in the dryer. Rewash clothes right away with a heavy-duty detergent and add a rust remover.

• Draw water needed for cooking ahead of scheduled flushing time and set aside a large bottle of water in the refrigerator for drinking or future use.

• If water pressure or volume appears low after the flushing has finished, inspect the faucet screens for any trapped particles.

United States Air Force Thunderbirds To Headline 19th Annual Bethpage Air Show At Jones Beach Taking Place May 27-28, 2023

Bethpage Federal Credit Union, New York State’s largest credit union, and the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation, are pleased to announce that the United States Air Force Thunderbirds will headline the 19th Annual Bethpage Air Show at Jones Beach taking place on Saturday, May 27,

2023 and Sunday, May 28, 2023. This will be the demonstration team’s 9th performance at the Bethpage Air Show.

It was announced at the annual International Council of Air Shows (ICAS) Convention yesterday that the United States Army Golden Knights Parachute Team and the United States Marine Corps

F35B Lighting II will be performing, along with the world famous Skytpers, Long Island’s David Windmiller and Mike Goulian, North America’s most decorated aerobatic pilot.

“Last year, we were very grateful that the Thunderbirds changed their schedule to perform for us on Memorial Day, after the Saturday

and Sunday weekend shows were rained out,” said George Gorman, Regional Director, New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation. “Suffice to say, we couldn’t be happier to welcome the team back to Long Island for our 2023 show!”

“The Bethpage Air Show continues to be one of New York’s most

treasured events,” said Linda Armyn, Chief Strategy & Marketing Officer, Bethpage Federal Credit Union. “After 19 years, the pilots and performers, show organizers and fans have grown to become a big family. We look forward to organizing a very special show for our fans this year.”

It was also announced

that the United States Navy Blue Angels will return as headliners for the special 20th Anniversary Bethpage Air Show at Jones Beach, which will take place on Saturday, May 25, 2024 and Sunday, May 26, 2024.

Clothing Donations Needed For Long Island Children

Ethical Friends of Children, a free shop for Long Island children in need, is requesting donations of girls’ clothing, sizes 2 to 5. This outreach program, run and supported by the Ethical Humanist Society of Long Island in Garden City, assists more than 2500

children and their families each year by providing them with clothing, backpacks for school and infant furniture. The service is set up like a store so people can select what they want from a wide variety of clothes. “As we’ve set up our winter store, we are finding a gap in our

supply of clothing for little girls,” says Ethical Friends of Children Director Jim LoPresti of Massapequa Park.

Ethical Friends of Children, established in 1985, is staffed entirely by volunteers and there is no charge for any services. Individuals, families, or

community groups donate gently used clothing and other things children may require, such as backpacks. Any cash donations go entirely towards purchase of needed items for children, such as diapers and formula.

“Customers” are referred by many of the area’s social

service organizations and are supported by both religiously affiliated and private agencies funded by Nassau and Suffolk Counties

Volunteers are always welcome to help sort, organize and deliver clothing and goods.
