Northwell Health Walk More than 6,500 people will hit the Jones Beach Boardwalk on Sunday, May 21st to take part in the annual Northwell Health Walk, which will support the health of women and children throughout the region.

Day of Percussion

Three Seaford High School students were among 15 top student percussionists in Nassau County who were chosen to participate in the first Nassau Music Educator’s Association (NMEA) AllCounty Day of Percussion, April 21st. Senior Elissa Castro, junior Ryan Calvacca and freshman Liam McDonald, along with fellow All-County percussionists, honed

their skills during two master classes by world renowned musicians Leigh Howard Stevens and Dom Famularo. The students then came together to perform a concert that evening. The event was hosted by Seaford High School and coordinated by the school’s Band Director Anthony Romeo, who has worked on this type of event in Suffolk County for many years and was

delighted to bring the same opportunity to students in Nassau County. The event is expected to take place every other year.

“It’s very exciting to bring this opportunity to Seaford,” Romeo said.

We all have our routines.

Me, I find particular solace in the schedules of daily life more so than most. My mornings, especially, tend to dictate the tone of the afternoon and evening. This is both good and bad, of course.

A missed wake-up alarm, a favorite pair of jeans in the laundry, no more milk in the fridge… all can lead to being thrown off track and sent on your way in a state of disarray.

Whereas, when things run like clockwork, the feeling tends to be more of the notion that nothing can stand in the way of productivity. Who knew the snooze button could hold so much power?

In lieu of last week’s column

ruminating on the power of the almighty calendar and its tendency to dictate our schedules to the point that we no longer can differentiate those things we truly enjoy doing from those that are pure obligation, I received several kind letters from readers expressing their complete agreement that their lives, too, have been taken over by those tiny square boxes.

One woman even went so far as to recommend a book, “Quiet Mind,” which suggests that we would all be better served by taking a moment to sit back and relax, to find an hour of peace in which to clear our minds of the clutter that accumulates over the course of day after day spent running from one task to the next. The idea is to eventually, over time, expand upon this hour and have its influence extend throughout the entire day. How nice that would be.

It all begins with one moment, whether it is rising early to see the sun come up over the Great South Bay, or taking the extra time to prepare a homemade breakfast during the rush of the week, or even driving the scenic route to work. Little things add up to big things, and big things become a way of living, day by day. There is ample benefit to be found in making that effort.

It is not a perfect process, to be sure. There will still be those days when the snooze button seems the most viable option, when skipping breakfast and running out the door to sit in traffic is how you are destined to spend your morning. But that doesn’t have to dictate the tone of the entire day. Pop a CD in, turn up the volume, sit back and enjoy the ride.

There are miles to go before you sleep.

Sprinting into STEAM

Energy and enthusiasm were high at Seaford Manor Elementary School as students engaged in a three-day sprint of STEAM challenges in their classrooms. The challenges explored Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Mathematics.

Students in kindergarten through grade five honed their 21st century learning skills as they collaborated, communicated, thought critically and problemsolved while constructing

catapults, designing and building castles, engineering ziplines with Peter Pan, developing wind-powered mazes, taking on the bucket tower challenge and researching and creating insects.

Teachers carefully chose activities that aligned with the curriculum to reinforce their learning.

“It was invigorating; the whole school was alive with energy,” agreed Manor Principal Debra Emmerich and Assistant

Principal Mary Ellen Kakalos. Both expressed how proud they were of the staff for thoughtfully integrating these lessons into the curriculum and bringing them to life.

“We hope to continue doing so in the future,” they said.

John Striffolino, Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum, Instruction and Personnel, said that the district “recognizes the importance of STEAM activities and plans to

The idea for STEAM Sprints came from the Shared Decision Making (SDM) Committee, a group of parents, teachers and community members, according to Kakalos. It was then presented at a faculty meeting and the teachers planned their challenges from there.

In continuing with the STEAM theme, students will participate in a school assembly with “The Energized Guys,” May 9th, whose presentation focuses on science and energy conservation. In addition, student projects from the STEAM Sprint challenges will be on display during Curriculum Night, May 16th.

Fundraiser a Success

Options for Community Living held its third annual comedy night fundraising event at Governor’s in Levittown on Sunday, April 23rd.

The event raised close to $3,000 from the approximately 70 employees, friends and supporters in attendance.

The proceeds from this event will benefit Options’

programs which provide vital housing and services for Long Islanders in need.

Options is grateful to Martha Clara Vineyards, Sky Zone of Deer Park, Long Island Adventure Park, Little Bird Curious Confections and many local businesses who generously donated gifts for the raffle baskets.

“We are so grateful to

everyone who donated gifts and who came out to support Options for Community Living at our fun-raising event,” said Yolanda Robano-Gross, Options executive director.

A portion of the donation was raised through the generosity of King Kullen customers during an in-store scanned coupon program. “Go Red for Women” is a local and national movement that uses education, prevention and advocacy to make women aware of their risk for heart disease.

T. Denny Sanford, one of the country’s most celebrated philanthropists and innovative entrepreneurs will be the featured keynote speaker at LIU Post’s commencement ceremony on May 5th, on the Great Lawn.

Ceremonies for bachelor’s degree candidates will begin at 10 a.m., the doctoral, master’s and dual degree candidates will receive their degrees at 3 p.m.

The graduates celebrated in this ceremony, from LIU’s Post, Brentwood and Riverhead campuses, will include 904 undergraduates, 1095 masters candidates, 174 receiving advanced certificates, 43 doctoral candidates and 56 students receiving dual bachelormaster degrees.

“As one of the nation’s most celebrated entrepreneurs and philanthropists, T. Denny Sanford’s keynote address will honor the hard work of LIU’s graduates and their aspirations for the future,” said Kimberly R. Cline, President of LIU. “Mr. Sanford’s vision, to inspire and educate the next generation of leaders and give back to community, is one that reflects LIU’s own values, and we are eager to watch the Class of 2017 achieve great things as they begin

their careers.”

Sanford, is chairman of United National Corporation and has been honored as one of America’s top philanthropists by The Chronicle of Philanthropy.

Sanford’s growing collaboration with LIU has made it his premier partner on the East Coast as he continues to nationally expand the Sanford Education programs: Sanford Harmony, Sanford Inspire and the Sanford Institute of Philanthropy.

Each of the programs, coordinated by National University, a private nonprofit university based out of California, is designed to provide innovative, research-based solutions to address critical needs in teacher education, PreK-12 instruction and nonprofit fundraising.

LIU is currently housing all three institutes and helped bring Sanford Inspire and Sanford Harmony the New York City schools as well as districts on Long Island, impacting the lives of thousands of teachers and touching nearly 150,000 children in the New York region.

LIU’s Sanford Institute of Philanthropy launched with its Inaugural Seminar, “Tectonic Shifts in Philanthropy,” on April 27th, in advance of deploying the full course load this fall, aimed at
