Town Seeks Volunteers

For Rain Garden Work Party

Supervisor Joseph Saladino invites volunteers to join the upcoming Rain Garden Work Party at Theodore Roosevelt Park, to help maintain the Town’s raingardens which help prevent stormwater pollution. The event will take place at the Western Waterfront at Theodore Roosevelt Park in Oyster Bay on Saturday, May 4th, and volunteers are encouraged to bring their own work gloves for the occasion.

“We welcome all those interested in native plant gardening to come join our spring Rain Garden Work Party. Participants will learn about rain gardens’ ecological impact while helping to maintain them,” said Supervisor Saladino. “We will work alongside volunteers and our environmental partners to weed, rake, prune, plant and mulch while learning about the environmental benefits

these structures provide. This family-friendly program welcomes participants of all ages, particularly those seeking to fulfill community service hours.”

Rain gardens were installed at Theodore Roosevelt Park in Oyster Bay in partnership with Friends of the Bay and the Nassau County Soil and Water Conservation District. These gardens effectively filter stormwater runoff before it reaches local waterways. Rain gardens also help alleviate problems associated with flooding and drainage, recharge the ground water supply, provide habitat and food for wildlife and enhance the beauty of local communities.

“A rain garden is a collection of native plants placed in a small depression designed to slowly absorb rain water runoff. They have numerous environmental benefits, such as filtering

pollutants, reducing flooding, and providing food and habitats to wildlife,” added Councilwoman Vicki Walsh. “However, they must be maintained regularly to ensure healthy soil, healthy plants, and a healthy community, which is why we’re seeking volunteers to assist with our existing rain gardens at the Western Waterfront in Oyster Bay.”

Volunteers are invited to gather at the Western Waterfront, 1 West End Avenue in Oyster Bay, on Saturday, May 4th. The Rain Garden Work Party will run from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. Participants should bring work gloves, and community service hours are offered to participants. The Average Individual Is Retiring Earlier Than Many People Might Expect

According to a recent Gallup’s Economy and Personal Finance survey, the average individual in the United States is retiring earlier than many people might expect. Gallup found that the average retirement age was 62, which is two years earlier than the working respondents indicated they planned to retire. Canadians are retiring a little bit later than their American counterparts, as Statistics Canada reports the average retirement age in Canada is just over 63 and a half. The average retirement age is worth noting, as studies routinely find that many

working professionals greatest concern about retiring is that they won’t have enough money saved to meet their needs.

By recognizing that they may end up retiring earlier than they initially planned, professionals can make a concerted effort to save more money in the years ahead.

Seaford Manor Celebrates Its Math Olympians

After tackling some of the toughest math problems of their young lives, 20 students from Seaford Manor Elementary School’s Math Olympiad team were recognized in front of their parents on April 5. They were presented with certificates during a morning ceremony in the cafeteria, led by math specialist Candace Kaplan.

But before the accolades began, Ms. Kaplan wanted to show parents just how challenging the work was. She provided worksheets with five sample Math Olympiad questions, then

asked the children and adults to work together to find the answers.

The fourth and fifth graders met for 10 weeks after school, alternating between practice and contests. The word problems tackled a wide range of mathematical concepts.

“They needed a lot of prior knowledge to solve them,” Ms. Kaplan said.

“The students did such a wonderful job, and their hard work speaks volumes about their dedication to and passion for learning.”

Math Olympiad teams can be found in all 50

states and 35 countries.

Ms. Kaplan said that Seaford Manor students are among approximately 90,000 students worldwide who participate in the competition.

She presented each student with a certificate and also gave medals to those who scored exceptionally well. Children who placed in the top 10% also got a patch.

The top Math Olympian in the school was Dax Borowski, who additionally received a “math guru” pillow as a prize.

Best School In The World? New Manor Book Says ‘Yes’!

Ask a student, teacher, staff member or anyone affiliated with Seaford Manor Elementary School and they will tell you that it’s simply the best school in the world. It may not be an official ranking, but it was the inspiration for a studentgenerated book.

“Manor School: Best School in the World” was written and designed by students. A group of 31 fifth graders contributed their efforts to bring it to fruition, volunteering their time over several recess periods. The 36-page book includes a chapter on each grade level, from kindergarten through fifth grade, and showcases the different programs, activities, events and learning experiences that makes the school special. Students interviewed teachers to help create content, and tapped into their own experiences. They

used Book Creator to design the pages. It was their first foray into the digital app, so they learned as they went along.

“It was a fun activity for us to do,” said Emily Belfatto, who helped write the chapter on third grade. “I liked taking the experiences of me being in that grade.”

The idea for the book came

from the school’s Shared Decision Making Committee and it was created under the guidance of teachers Katie Germanakos, Samantha Hoenscheid and Gabrielle LoCicero. Each Manor family will receive a digital copy of the book. The school will also have hard copies printed for each classroom.
