Seaford Teachers Are Trained For Cardiac Emergencies

It’s training they hope to never have to use, but if a medical emergency does happen at Seaford High School, a group of administrators and teachers are able to help.

Michael Spreckels, a physical education teacher and the district’s athletic trainer, recently conducted a training session for members of the Cardiac Emergency Response Team.

CERT includes Principal Nicole Schnabel, assistant principals Dr. Raphi Morey and Anthony Murray, Director

Athletics Kevin Witt, the school nurse and several teachers. Ms. Schnabel said that the training not only benefited new members of the team, but was a good refresher for everyone.

Mr. Spreckels reviewed steps necessary to help a child, teen or adult having a medical emergency. Using a dummy, he showed how to do CPR and also how to use an automated external defibrillator. He said that each school in Seaford has several AEDs and units are also kept close by during every athletic contest.

“You can’t be too prepared,” Mr. Spreckels

said. “This is about empowering teachers to take control in case of sudden cardiac arrest.”

Mr. Spreckels also talked about the other steps that CERT team members need to take, such as assigning someone to call the fire department. He noted the importance of having staff members who can give lifesaving treatment until first responders arrive on scene, as those first few minutes are crucial.

Members of CERT will conduct training sessions for staff at Seaford Middle School and the elementary schools.

Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino announced that there are still openings for summer employment in the Town of Oyster Bay. Positions are available for the 2023 Summer Recreation Program, as well as the Youth Tennis Program. Those interested must be 16 years of age or older to apply.

“These great summer jobs are ideal for community teens ages 16 or older who are looking to build their resume,” said Supervisor Saladino. “Our summer recreation

counselors and tennis assistants have a lot of fun while receiving hands-on experience and making a difference in the lives of others.”

The Summer Recreation Program runs for six weeks, from July 5th through August 11th. Applicants must be available for the duration of the program. Sessions are Monday through Friday, from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Program participants take part in trips, tournaments, shows and athletic events, including the TOBAY Games, making being a

counselor a great first job for many residents. Tennis Assistants must be 16+, have at least 1- 2 years of experience participating on a Tennis team, and be available for the duration of the program, which also runs from June 26th until August 11th. Tennis runs Monday through Thursday, between the hours of 3:45 p.m. and 8 p.m.

Autism And Children

According to the National Autism Association, autism is a bio-neurological developmental disability that affects the normal development of the brain in various areas. Those areas include social interaction, communication skills and cognitive function. Autism generally appears before a child reaches his or her third birthday, and the NAA notes it is diagnosed four times as often in boys than it is in girls. Roughly 40 percent of children with autism do not speak, but parents whose children speak between the ages of

12 and 18 months should know that such youngsters can still ultimately be diagnosed with autism. In such instances, the NAA notes that children lose the words they previously learned. Incidences of autism appear to be on the rise, though the reasons for that remain unclear. According to a report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the prevalence of autism had risen to one in every 59 children by 2018. That’s twice as great as the rate in 2004, when the CDC reported one in 125 children were diagnosed with autism.

Long Island (RTLI) is a nonprofit organization, headquartered in Farmingdale, serving Nassau County and most of Su olk County. As an a liate of the national organization, Rebuilding Together, their mission is repairing homes, revitalizing communities and rebuilding lives.

To accomplish their vision of safe and healthy homes for everyone, they provide free essential home safety repairs and modifications for economicallydisadvantaged homeowners, whether they are older adults, veterans, families or persons with a disability or limited mobility.

The beneficiaries of RTLI’s work, lowincome homeowners struggling to get by, are so appreciative of the repairs and modifications that this organization does to keep them safe and improve their quality of life. “I was desperate,” said a widow of a Navy veteran who welcomed RTLI’s helping hand. “Now I have so much less stress and a more comfortable and safer house.”

Another recent client said, “Thank you for treating my home like it was yours. You all showed professionalism, caring and impeccable workmanship. You made my home more livable and safer. You are doing a beautiful thing and should be very proud.” These words lift the spirits of the hardworking RTLI volunteers.

Their small o ce in Farmingdale has only one employee, so their volunteers are really a significant part of what they do. “Our volunteers are the heart and soul of our organization,” said Stella Hendrickson, President of RTLI. “Almost all are retired. They give their time, their talents, their expertise and their hearts

to those who need a helping hand.”

The volunteer teams work tirelessly to help our neighbors, traveling throughout Long Island, using their own cars and tools. They come from all walks of life and professions, from teachers to principals, business owners, social workers, administrative assistants, accountants and truck drivers. The list goes on and on, but they all have one thing in common; their commitment to do the right thing, give back, lend a hand and be there for someone in need.

Here are ways you can get involved:

•If you know someone who may benefit from their services, have them call the RTLI o ce at 631.777.7894, Monday – Friday, to see if they qualify for the free program.

•Join the RTLI team! Volunteers can sign up at rebuildingtogetherli.org/ volunteer-today. Currently they are looking for individuals who are fluent in Spanish and for an o ce person, particularly if they are familiar with Salesforce. Additionally, if you are handy with tools, the Nassau and Su olk crew teams are always looking for more help.

•Donate at rebuildingtogetherli. org. RTLI relies on the donations of our neighbors, some grants and corporate sponsorships, as they do not receive any government funding.

•RTLI encourages local business to get involved and sponsor a project. The organization can find the right project for your business to sponsor and you can then promote your generosity on social media to show your commitment to improving the health and safety of someone in need locally.

When we work together, we can bring about transformational change quickly in our communities.

Liberty is commencing its annual spring flushing program as part of its routine distribution system maintenance to help ensure quality water service to Liberty customers. Starting May 8, annual flushing will begin in Levittown, North Seaford, North Wantagh. “Water main flushing is an important part of our operations and maintenance programs to remove harmless mineral and sediment buildup that can cause water to become discolored,” said Liberty Director of Operations, Brenda Wall. “Our flushing program positively impacts water quality while also ensuring all fire hydrants are operating properly, with the adequate flow needed in the event of an emergency.”

Water mains are flushed by opening fire hydrants in specific locations throughout each community to increase water flow to the area. While crews are performing flushing operations, residents may experience a temporary drop in water pressure and/or discolored water. If you experience discolored water, please allow the water to run in your faucet until it is once again clear, which shouldn’t be more than a minute or two.

In order for residents to better prepare for flushing in their neighborhood, Liberty asks that they consider the following tips and steps:

· Make note on your calendar of your community’s scheduled

flushing times.

· Prior to using the washing machine and dishwasher, check for discolored water.

· If discolored water stains your laundry, do not put it in the dryer. Rewash clothes right away with a heavy-duty detergent and add a rust remover.

· Draw water needed for cooking ahead of scheduled flushing time and set aside a large bottle of water in the refrigerator for drinking or future use.

· If water pressure or volume appears low after the flushing has finished, inspect the faucet screens for any trapped particles.

Experienced student leaders shared their expertise with up-andcoming leaders at Seaford Middle School on April

Student Leaders Converge And Converse

4. Students from the high school’s Athletic Leadership Council made the short trip to speak with Teen Leaders Care,

a group of seventh and eighth graders that have been identified for their leadership potential.

The middle school

students heard from the athletes about a variety of topics, including time management, overcoming adversity and setting a good example. The leaders discussed situations that their younger peers will likely experience when they get high school and their schedules get busier.

The Athletic Leadership Council is advised by high school teachers Justin McCormack and Ralph Pascarella. They explained that the students chosen for the council have demonstrated leadership through their ability to succeed in multiple aspects of student life.

“They’re rock star leaders,” Mr. Pascarella said. “They’re great students, they’re great athletes and they get involved in the community.”

The high school leaders also spearheaded several activities for the middle school students that fostered teamwork. In one game, they had to line up in order of birthday, but had to do so without verbal communication. They also had to pass a hula hoop down the line but couldn’t use their hands.

Teen Leaders Care is led by guidance counselors Sarah Busch and Stacey Ranzie, social worker Amanda Robilotto and

psychologist Joanna Schroeder. The students take on a mentorship role for the sixth graders.

Assistant Principal Jennifer Bisulca said the knowledge they gained from their high school peers will be very beneficial in helping them become stronger role models. She added that the get-together also gave them insight on how they can continue their leadership journeys in high school.

The South Shore Audubon Society has begun accepting applications for two $1000 Environmental Scholarships. The scholarships will be awarded to college juniors, seniors, or graduate students earning a degree in areas of biological or environmental science, or sustainable and renewable energy .

For the Evelyn and Jerry Bishop Environmental Scholarship, applicants must be residents of one of the areas listed at www.ssaudubon.org/areaswe-serve.asp and/or attend a college in Nassau or Suffolk County.

Take Steps is the Crohn’s & Colitis Foundation’s national walk and the largest event dedicated to finding cures for digestive diseases. Millions of American adults and children suffer from Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis, lifechanging digestive diseases. Symptoms include abdominal pain, diarrhea, and weight loss. Many patients require hospitalization and surgery.

Calling All Students Interested In Music… Earn A Full Scholarship To Nassau Boces Long Island High School For The Arts Summer Arts Academy

Nassau BOCES Long Island High School for the Arts (LIHSA) is awarding 15 fully paid music scholarships to its four-week Summer Arts Academy to students with a passion for music— whether it be singing, playing an instrument, or producing music. These scholarships are provided with funding support by The Joel Foundation

Located on LIHSA’s Syosset Campus, the Summer Arts Academy, which runs in partnership with Hofstra University’s Continuing Education, offers aspiring youngsters (grades 7-12) a one-of-a-kind opportunity to develop their skills as musicians and performers. The program takes place from June 26-July 21, 2023, 9 a.m.-3 p.m., weekdays. Students must provide their own transportation. Interested students must submit an audition video.
