Identity Theft Prevention Tips

(NAPSI)-A recent online survey by Toluna/ Greenfield Online, Inc. found that while most consumers try to protect their identity, many admitted to risky behavior that could put them at risk for ID theft. To help educate and protect consumers, world-renowned fraud prevention expert Frank Abagnale offers these tips:

• Shop smart: Limit the credit cards you carry.

•Keep receipts and check your statements: Examine every charge on your statement before paying. Your receipts provide a great crossreference check and guard against suspicious activity. You have 30 days from the date of your statement to notify your financial institution of any discrepancies; otherwise, you can be liable for any purchases.

• Protect your computer when online shopping:

Make sure your security patch and anti-virus software are updated regularly. Consider technology to protect against potential viruses.

• Watch where you shop online: Look for the lock icon on the site’s browser status bar, a sign that that site is safe. If you have never heard of a website before, see if it has security precautions in place and isn’t a fake site set up by identity thieves.

•Don’t write checks: Give cash or gift cards. The information on a check—name, signature, address—can be used to steal identity.

•Strengthen passwords: Use passwords with at least eight characters, including a combination of letters, numbers and symbols that are easy for you to remember but difficult for predators to guess.

• Watch your wallet: Be careful at parties,

restaurants, fitness clubs, shopping carts and your car.

• Don’t take the bait on phishing scams: Also, beware of shoulder surfing (when a thief looks over your shoulder while you’re at an ATM, either directly or via a camera).

• Stop mail and newspaper delivery when you’ll be away from home.

• Consider an identity theft protection service: One low-cost solution monitors the online criminal underground where identities are bought and sold and instantly alerts you if your Social Security number or up to 10 credit card or debit card numbers are posted by thieves. The service also scans online directories and search engines, prime sources for spammers and thieves, letting you know where your information is available, and provides advice on how to remove it.

Book Tournament Enthralls

Seaford Manor Readers

March Madness: A Tournament of Books was back at Seaford Manor Elementary School this year, a literacy initiative styled after the popular college basketball contest. In partnership with the Seaford Public Library’s children’s department, 16

picture books were selected. The books were paired in head-to-head matchups until it was down to eight, then four, then a final two – “The Sour Grape” by Jory John and “Dex: The Heart of a Hero” by Mark Buehner. Each book was read aloud by a Seaford administrator,

teacher, or a staff member of the public library. The videos were shared on the school website, so each class could watch and then submit a vote.

“All of the participants were very enthusiastic in

Rebuilding Together

Long Island (RTLI) is a nonprofit organization, headquartered in Farmingdale, serving Nassau County and most of Su olk County. As an a liate of the national organization, Rebuilding Together, their mission is repairing homes, revitalizing communities and rebuilding lives.

To accomplish their vision of safe and healthy homes for everyone, they provide free essential home safety repairs and modifications for economicallydisadvantaged homeowners, whether they are older adults, veterans, families or persons with a disability or limited mobility.

Security and comfort should come to mind when we think of home...but what if your home didn’t make you feel that way? Maybe there’s no heat or hot water for your family, or your doors don’t lock so you prop a chair under the doorknob each night. When you’re living on a fixed or low income, making repairs or modifications is typically just a wish, not a reality. Homeowners know that taking care of small problems today can help avert larger, more costly problems tomorrow and this is where Rebuilding Together Long Island can come into play and help out! For more than 30 years, RTLI has focused on improving the living conditions of our neighbors and fulfilling those dreams of a safe, warm and accessible home.

Primarily a volunteer organization, they are neighbors helping neighbors and there is never a charge. From minor to sometimes major repairs, they improve the safety, health and well-being of every household. From handyman type repairs to modifications for our aging population and those with physical limitations, they’re ready to lend a hand.

Recent studies have shown that for people 65 and older, falls account for approximately 60 percent of all injury-related emergency department visits and over 50 percent of injuryrelated deaths annually. Also, up to 80 percent of falls in the home occur in the bathroom. RTLI can install grab bars and ADA height toilets, widens doorways where possible and can even have bathtubs converted to walk-in showers. Wheelchair ramps are one of their most requested modifications and can be constructed in two days. So how can you help?

•If you know someone who may benefit from their services, have them call the RTLI o ce at 631.777.7894, Monday – Friday, to see if they qualify for the free program.

•Join the RTLI team! Volunteers can sign up at rebuildingtogetherli.org/ volunteer-today. Currently they are looking for individuals who are fluent in Spanish and for an o ce person, particularly if they are familiar with Salesforce. Additionally, if you are handy with tools, the Nassau and Su olk crew teams are always looking for more help.

•Donate at rebuildingtogetherli. org. RTLI relies on the donations of our neighbors, some grants and corporate sponsorships, as they do not receive any government funding.

•RTLI encourages local business to get involved and sponsor a project. The organization can find the right project for your business to sponsor and you can then promote your generosity on social media to show your commitment to improving the health and safety of someone in need locally.

When we work together, we can bring about transformational change quickly in our communities.

New Pickleball Courts Coming Soon To

Town Of Oyster Bay

Parks

Pickleball Courts to Open in Bayville, Farmingdale, Massapequa, Plainview, Woodbur y

Oyster Bay Town

Supervisor Joseph Saladino and Councilman

Steve Labriola announce that new Pickleball Courts are coming soon to parks throughout the Town of Oyster Bay. Due to popular demand, the Town is constructing new Pickleball Courts at John Burns Park in Massapequa, Field of Dreams and Anchor Park in Massapequa, Allen Park in Farmingdale, SyossetWoodbury Community Park, Plainview-Old Bethpage Community Park, and Centre Island Beach in Bayville. Courts are anticipated to open to the public in September 2023.

“Pickleball is a fun sport for all ages that combines elements of tennis, badminton, and ping pong. It’s become incredibly popular in our Town, with seniors and families playing daily at our existing courts in Massapequa and Bethpage,” said Supervisor Saladino. “Due to this popular demand, I’m proud to announce that the Town of Oyster Bay is building new Pickleball courts for all residents to enjoy.”

ickleball is played with a wooden paddle and lightweight plastic ball and can include two, three, or four players. The dimensions and layout closely resemble a badminton court, which

Healthy Minds

is considerably smaller than a tennis court. Rules of the game are somewhat similar to tennis. These new Pickleball courts come in addition to existing Town courts located at H. Garrick Williams Park in Massapequa and behind the Bethpage Library in Bethpage.

“Pickleball is a very fun, social and healthy activity for the whole family and these new courts will be a welcome addition to the community. So, grab your sneakers and paddle, and get ready to play one of the world’s fastest growing sports at a new court near you!” added Councilman Labriola.

The social and emotional well-being of students is intertwined into daily life at Seaford’s elementary schools. Their emotional toolkits are constantly being filled with more knowledge, and even some actual tools, that promote self-care.

Seaford Harbor Elementary School first graders have their newest tool – breathing sticks. Students in Renee Hauser’s class made these simple objects from pipe cleaners and colorful

beads on March 20. She explained that students can move the five beads as they do different breathing exercises. By moving one bead at a time as they take a breath, it can help them relax and focus.

Social worker Jennifer DeMieri visited a fourth grade class on March 21 for a lesson on the metamoment. It is one of the coping skills that students gain from the RULER program, an initiative in Seaford through a partnership with the Yale

University Center on Emotional Intelligence. The fourth graders learned how to respond appropriately, rather than reacting impulsively, when they become upset.

Ms. DeMieri added that she visits kindergarten through fifth grade classes throughout the building for social and emotional lessons, introducing students to various skills and strategies that help them recognize and manage their emotions.

Seaford Launches 2023 Scholarship Drive

Continued From 7

their read alouds,” said fourth grade teacher Jillian Copius, who coordinated the book tournament with first grade teacher Kristen Whitman.

Ms. Copius said that different books are chosen every year so students get to hear many stories during their time at Manor. This year’s selections included a mix of fiction and nonfiction books with a variety of themes.

On April 5, the day

before spring break, the winning book was revealed. This year’s Tournament of Books champion was “Dex: The Heart of a Hero,” which was read by Seaford Middle School principal Dan Smith.

Ms. Copius said that the goal of this annual tournament is to foster a love of reading and also to create a community of readers. The students connect with adults throughout the district over a shared love of books.

Nassau BOCES Announces Pilot Program With SUNY Empire State

Nassau BOCES is pleased to announce an exclusive pilot program with SUNY Empire State College. The pilot allows any student who successfully completes an asynchronous class through the Agency’s Online Learning Academy to gain automatic acceptance into SUNY Empire State College upon graduating high school.

Lynbrook UFSD student Matthew LaVerda is the first recipient of this honor. He recently graduated from Lynbrook’s Owl Success Academy, which offers classes through the Online Learning Academy, and was recognized at a recent Board of Education meeting.

“We are extremely grateful for our partnership

with Nassau BOCES in providing an online learning environment for our students. We are thrilled to have one of Lynbrook’s students recognize the importance of obtaining a high school diploma and taking full advantage of this BOCES supported program. We are so very proud of him and the opportunities that now lie before him,”

said Dr. Melissa Burak, Superintendent, Lynbrook UFSD.

The Online Learning Academy enables school districts to provide a variety of courses that in-district faculty or facilities may not have available. It provides a remote learning option for Homebound or remote learners, enrollment in courses a district is not able

to provide, opportunities for students who may be unable to complete full days onsite, and remote credit recovery options for students needing to complete courses outside of the school environment or beyond the school day. Students can enroll in a single course or a full course schedule.

“We are already working

on programs to pave a solid pathway for student success once they are admitted to SUNY Empire State College,” said Elisa Maggi, Supervisor for Nassau BOCES’ Center for Online Learning. “We look forward to working with other New York State BOCES to eventually roll this program out across the State.”

Dozens Of Volunteers Help Strengthen Shoreline By Planting Dune Grass At Tobay

Dozens of volunteers of all ages joined with Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino, North Hempstead Town Supervisor Jennifer

DeSena, Councilman Thomas Hand, and Receiver of Taxes Jeff Pravato at the Town of Oyster Bay’s Annual Dune Day event.

Held at TOBAY Beach, this program brings community groups, families, and individuals concerned about our environment

together to help protect and preserve our beautiful shoreline by planting stalks of dune grass. Dunes along the south shore continue

to face environmentally damaging storms that have a significant impact on the beach. Statistics indicate that the planting of dune

grass provides a natural shield that is perfect for withstanding storm surges and high winds.

As more people work remotely, electricians and safety advocates are warning that various missteps may be putting people at unnecessary risk of fire and other unsafe conditions. Electrical equipment is necessary to run home offices just like it is traditional offices. Some people may find they have a shortage of electrical outlets to power their devices, and as a result they may turn to extension cords or power strips. While that may seem like an easy fix, it is easy to inadvertently overload outlets and circuits by connecting more than one power strip or extension cord together in a practice known

as “daisy chaining.”

According to the U.S. Office of Compliance, using a daisy chain in the workplace violates the National Electrical Code as well as the Occupational Safety and Health Administration’s rules. While it may not break code at home, overloading any outlets increases risk for fire. The National Fire Protection Association indicates that more than 45,000 residential fires are started each year due to electrical failure and malfunction. Overload causes products to overheat, and that can spark fires in the power cords themselves or inside the wall where electrical lines are hidden.

Joseph Saladino announced that the Town will once again host the prestigious Special Olympics Spring Games in partnership with Special Olympics New York. Held at the Farmingdale Athletic Complex on Saturday, May 6th, the games will include a full-day of competitive track and field events for over 500 athletes supported by more than 300 coaches. These athletes - children and adults with intellectual disabilities - have dedicated months to training for an Olympic-style competition that will culminate with the contest during these Spring Games.

“Special Olympics are an opportunity to showcase the hard work, dedication, talents, and tremendous athletic achievements of athletes, while also paving the way to eliminate social barriers and stereotypes differently-abled individuals face,” said Supervisor Saladino. “The Town of Oyster Bay is very proud to be a partner with Special Olympics New York and the Farmingdale School District in making this important event a reality. I hope you’ll join us in witnessing the joy, courage, and determination of these inspirational athletes.”

“Special Olympics New York provides year-round sports training and athletic competition in a variety of Olympic-style

sports for children and adults with intellectual disabilities, providing them a continuing opportunity to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, make friends, and participate in a sharing of gifts, skills, and friendship with their families,” Diane Colonna, Vice President, Downstate Operations Special Olympics, New York said. “We are honored that the Farmingdale School District will host our Spring Games and make a difference in the lives of these athletes.”

The event will be held on Saturday, May 6th at the Farmingdale Athletic Complex at Howitt Middle School. For more information on how to get involved, visit the school’s website at www.farmingdaleschools.org. If you are eligible to participate in the games, visit www.specialolympicsny.org to register.

“This event would be impossible without the generosity of our sponsors, including Optimum, MSG Networks, and 7- Eleven, as well as the residents and volunteers who attend to cheer on these dedicated athletes. We hope to see you in the stands on May 6th to show your support for Special Olympics in our community. All are welcome!” Supervisor Saladino concluded.

Benefits To Cooking Your Own Meals

Aging men and women may be tempted to eschew home cooking entirely. After all, there are plenty of convenient frozen or take-out foods available that can be whipped up in a snap. However, there are certain benefits to cooking your own meals. John Moore, DO, an Aetna medical director and senior health specialist, says that cooking can be good for helping to stave off cognitive decline. Dr. Moore notes that, when cooking,

the mind is put to use following a recipe and learning new skills and tasks. Furthermore, cooking for oneself can boost seniors’ self-confidence, reassuring them that they can handle an important daily task without having to rely on their family for meals. As long as it is deemed safe (i.e., no sign of cognitive decline or forgetfulness), seniors should be encouraged to continue cooking.
