Don’t Forget the Tomatoes I have recently taken to food shopping more frequently, with the intention of picking up “just a few things” during each visit to the grocery store, eliminating the need for a cart and - theoretically - such a large expense in one shot.

The cost, well, it depends on the particular outing and what items are on the menu.

The cart… let’s just say I have yet to master the art of consolidating my purchases to one of those convenient little hand baskets they provide by the front entrance.

Case in point: on my last trip to one of my favorite food stores, I meandered through the aisles selecting a bit of this and that. At about the halfway point, as I was nearing the deli counter, I noticed that my basket was nearly overflowing.

The gentleman taking my cold cut order seemed to note the same fact simultaneously,

remarking, Are you gonna carry all that??

I’m going to try, I replied with a smile, while bracing my basket on the edge of the shelving in front of me.

My order complete, I continued on my way into the next section of the store, surveying the shelves to determine how many more items I could possibly carry.

As I contemplated, I felt a tap on the shoulder. I turned to find a man standing with my cold cuts, those just purchased several steps back, in hand, apparently having fetched them from the floor behind me. Whoops.

On to the produce section, where I attempted to juggle tomatoes while picking out cucumbers. And there they went, rolling down the aisle, nearly taking out a young mother and her child.

Mom, it’s a little red ball!

the girl squealed, taking off after the tomato. Oh my, I’m so sorry! I hurriedly gathered up the rogue produce and headed to checkout, resigned to the fact that I simply could not carry one more thing.

There, I was met with a similarly bewildered look from the cashier, who watched as I piled my merchandise onto the conveyer belt, one item at a time.

Do you have bags? she asked. Why yes, yes I do, three in fact. She chuckled, Three bags and no cart? Yes, I replied sheepishly. Yes, I recognize the irony in that.

After my total was calculated {not quite as inexpensive as planned}, the cashier said Here’s a tip: even if you think you’re only running in for a gallon of milk, take a cart.

Friends of Karen is a nonprofit organization that supports critically-ill children and their families.

This year, they are celebrating their 40th anniversary; four decades of bringing help, hope and support to over 15,000 children and their families in the tri-state area.

In 1978, Friends of Karen began with one family, one child, Karen MacInnes; and one inspired woman, Sheila Petersen, who wanted to sustain her close friends through the devastating illness of their daughter. Today, Friends of Karen serves hundreds of families by providing emotional, financial and advocacy support to children with life-threatening illnesses, and to their families in order to help keep them stable, functioning and able to cope, at no cost. To apply for help, a parent or guardian of the ill child must call the organization and speak to a member of their Family Support Team.

Friends of Karen often hosts or participates in many events within their community. On Saturday, May 5th and Sunday, May 6th, they are hosting a team in the Long Island Marathon at Eisenhower Park in East Meadow.

Creative Expressions

Seaford High School students recently toured a pair of colleges in the Northeast. The two trips, both on March 26th, were to Yale University and Marist College, with a total of 60 students attending.

The annual college visitation trips provide students with an opportunity to learn about the college recruiting process. The trips are organized by the guidance department under the direction of Chairman Frank

Stazzone and guidance counselors Suzanne Cosenza, Joanna Cavallo and Jennifer Pimentel.

The goal is to visit several schools each year to network with different admissions offices and stay current with policy change.

Students acquire the knowledge necessary to conduct personalized college visits and gain valuable experience. They also get the perspective from current students and experience college life

Taste of College with tours of residence halls, dining facilities and academic buildings.

Among questions the students asked during the recent visits were about acceptance rate, cost, college essay topics and majors.

“Hopefully, they learned the importance of a college visit when researching schools of interest,” Mr. Stazzone said. “The students were excited and motivated on the bus rides home to discuss their plans moving forward.”

Keeping Kids Current There was high-level of energy in the computer lab at Seaford Harbor Elementary School on April 9th, where a group of fifth-graders explored electrical currents. The room doubles as a STEAM lab, where students regularly participate in activities that focus on science, technology,

engineering, the arts and math.

Youngsters used Little Bits circuit kits, which included numerous pieces that allowed students to make functioning buzzers, light dimmers, fans, thermometers and other gadgets. Working in groups, they had to put color-coded pieces together

in a particular order to complete their circuits and have the proper flow of electricity.

The circuit lesson was part of the school’s STEAMed Lunch series, in which students eat and then explore through hands-on projects. The culminating project of the day was a small car.

KEEPING KIDS CURRENT - Seaford Harbor Elementary School fifth-graders worked with Little Bits circuit kits during a lunchtime STEAM activity on April 9th.
