Students had their passports stamped for taking part in each activity, including a poster contest.

Participants could vote on the poster they felt best represented the theme, “Languages: Windows to the World.” The winner was junior Savannah Heaney. Earlier in the week, the school hosted a FIFA soccer tournament on the Nintendo Wii in which students competed against each other as different countries.

In Seaford, students can take Spanish or French beginning in middle school to fulfill their world language requirement.

Foreign Language Chairwoman Patricia Foley said that about 75 percent of students continue on with language studies in high school.

American Sign Language is also offered for juniors and seniors.

The Time of the Season And just like that, spring has arrived, with its bursts of warm sunshine coaxing the flower blossoms from beneath the winter-hardened soil. The Easter Bunny has already come and gone, and plans are well underway for summer vacations and the tantalizing temptation of beach season.

Seems we were only just beginning to put together our Christmas shopping lists not so long ago, doesn’t it?

It’s funny, how this concept of time seems to work its way into nearly every conversation in one respect or another the lack of it, its tendency to pass by too quickly… seldom have I heard the argument that there is simply too much time to know what to do with.

Never, in fact. Seems this would be a rather enviable problem to have. But alas, this is most certainly not the case.

As with most of life’s

struggles, it is how we choose to deal with, and hopefully, to overcome these issues that is the most important.

Redirecting our focus constantly, from wallowing in the negativity of why did this happen? to being proactive in setting a plan for what would I like to happen? going forward.

No use dwelling on the past; we need to be present in order to look to the future with anything resembling a clear perspective.

They say hindsight is 20/20; but is it truly? I would argue that, even upon reflecting on past events, I do not have an unequivocal assessment of how things might have turned out differently; or even, if they should have. No, I am a firm believer that all things happen for a reason, even if that reason is not immediately - or ever - apparent. Some things are simply not meant to be

understood beyond a shadow of a doubt. Life is nothing if not filled with unexpected twists and turns, and a touch of the unknown.

I recently came across a quote which said, in part, that it is not truly the unknown which we fear; but rather, what we think we know of the unknown. What an interesting concept, this notion that most of our apprehensions are selfmade and, if we would only take care to take a step back and let things play out a bit, perhaps we would be pleasantly surprised as to the outcome.

Spring is traditionally seen as a time of growth and progress, naturally and otherwise. The seeds must be planted and cultivated, in hopes of a fruitful season.

Whether things blossom as we wish, well, that remains to be seen. As with most things, only time will tell.

Friends of Karen is a nonprofit organization that supports critically-ill children and their families.

This year, they are celebrating their 40th anniversary; four decades of bringing help, hope and support to over 15,000 children and their families in the tri-state area. I had the pleasure of meeting with some of their staff members to grasp a better understanding of all they have done and all they continue to do for those in need.

In 1978, Friends of Karen began with one family, one child, Karen MacInnes; and one inspired woman, Sheila Petersen, who wanted to sustain her close friends through the devastating illness of their daughter. Today, Friends of Karen serves hundreds of families by providing emotional, financial and advocacy support to children with life-threatening illnesses, and to their families in order to help keep them stable, functioning and able to cope, at no cost.

To apply for help, a parent or guardian of the ill child must call the organization and speak to a member of their Family Support Team. It is apparent to me that Friends of Karen wants whomever is going through a tough and unimaginable critical illness to know that they are not alone and that help is available for them.

Friends of Karen often hosts or participates in many events within their community. On Saturday, May 5th and Sunday, May 6th, they are hosting a team in the Long Island Marathon at

Myles Schnaier came in second place in the seventh-grade competition for his project, “An

Stephen Karounos and Connor Lochner finished in third place for their experiment, “What Can Help a Plant to Thrive or Die?” All students who placed in the Seaford Middle School science fair in February were invited to the competition at Nassau Community College. Other

“I liked being able to get on stage and perform for everyone and show all of the hard work that we put in,” Raelyn said.

The play was based upon the 2005 DreamWorks animated film, “Madagascar,” which Brendan said he has seen “at least 40 times.” That knowledge of the movie

helped him in developing his character.

The high-energy show featured choreographed dances and even a few gymnastics tricks to catchy musical numbers like “Steak,” “Wild and Free,” and “I Like to Move It.” “Madagascar Junior” was directed by English teacher Susan Steinberg with music department Chairwoman Barbara Sherwin serving as assistant director.

How to hang photos and artwork with ease Personal touches turn a house into a home. Hanging pictures, whether they’re personal photographs or artwork, can really change the character of a room.

Unfortunately, some people may not know the proper ways to display pictures on a wall. Design maven Martha Stewart advises that the first step is to gather all of the pictures that are in consideration for hanging. This will enable a person to see what is available and edit their selection based on the space available, theme or color scheme. Having the artwork there enables a person to move it around like a puzzle until the placement feels just right.

Next, plan on hanging artwork at 57 inches on center, according to the renovation experts at Apartment Therapy. “On center” means the middle of the photograph or painting will always be at 57,” as this measurement represents the average human eye height. This height is regularly used as a standard in many galleries and museums.

There are no hard and fast rules concerning frames, meaning they do not all have to match. But placing framed artwork side by side can give a person a feel for whether the images and the frames work together in the space.

Some people like to use frames of similar colors and sizes. Others want the eclectic mix-and-match appeal. It’s ultimately up to the homeowner.

Measuring is key to hanging a picture correctly on the wall. Take into consideration the type of attachment, whether it’s D-rings, sawtooth hangers, wire or other fasteners on the back.

Measure from the top of the frame to the hanger. Measure the wall to achieve

the 57” on center location, and then calculate where this falls within the height of the artwork and frame top.

Adjust accordingly and mark. Then measure the distance from the frame top to the hanger location on the wall.

Be sure to take the weight of the picture into consideration when selecting hanging hardware. Wall anchors may be needed if measurements determine a wall stud will not help secure the artwork — to keep the frame sturdy in the drywall. Home improvement resource Today’s Homeowner also suggests using self-adhesive rubber bumpers to the bottom corners on the back of the frame before hanging so that the picture will not damage the wall and will help it hang level.

It can take a few attempts to hang pictures correctly, but with practice it should come with greater ease. The good news is there are new products constantly being evolved to make picture hanging easier, including those that enable removal and relocation of artwork without damaging walls.

More than 140 leadership volunteers united on Thursday, March 8th, at the American Cancer Society’s annual Evening of Hope at The Fox Hollow in Woodbury to celebrate the organization’s local impact, recognize volunteers and present the distinguished Heart and Soul award.

Highlight of the evening was the presentation of The Heart and Soul Award, a prestigious honor recognizing an individual(s) who encompasses the mission of the American Cancer Society through volunteerism, participation in multiple events and initiatives and goes beyond expectations in a volunteer role to benefit cancer patients and families on Long Island.

This year’s winners are Miguel and Abby Melendez of Baldwin, New York. In the ten years they have served as volunteers, they have actively participated in Relay For Life, supported Making Strides Against Breast Cancer, the

American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network, plus patient support including providing more than 150 rides to treatment for patients across Nassau and Queens. “Miguel and Abby are always the first to volunteer to represent the Society,” said Marie Cimaglia, Director of Development for the American Cancer Society.

“Their gift of their time and energy is truly amazing and they have become “our go to” team to get the word out about what the Society offers to the community.”

LIHSA Open House Nassau BOCES Long Island High School for the Arts (LIHSA) invites all high school students with artistic talent, passion and ambition to an Open House on Saturday, April 28th from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. LIHSA is now accepting applications for the 2018-2019 school year. Prospective students from across Long Island are invited to meet with LIHSA Principal Dr. Chris Rogutsky Bleecker and tour the campus at 239 Cold Spring Road in Syosset.

Attendees can join a theater improvisation skit, sketch in an art studio, participate in a dance class, listen to a jazz performance and experience much more to get better acquainted with LIHSA. During the Open House, parents of prospective students also have the opportunity to tour the facility and speak with the expert faculty, guidance counselors, administration and staff.

As part of their professional-level training, LIHSA students regularly receive one-on-one access to experienced professionals working in the industry. Students have recently benefitted from Master Classes and Workshops lead by pop-rock icon Billy Joel; actor and director Ralph Macchio; legendary frontman Eric Bloom, of the classic rock band Blue Oyster Cult; alumnus Michael Trusnovec, lead dancer in the Paul Taylor Dance Company; sculptor Frank Porcu; and worldrenowned violinist Patrick Yim, to name only a few. They also perform alongside Broadway stars during the school’s annual fundraiser, Broadway Supports LIHSA. Alumni of the school have gone on to develop successful careers in all arts fields. In addition to landing starring roles on Broadway, alumni have danced with national touring companies, illustrated for New Yorker magazine, designed successful swimsuit lines,

and embarked on technical careers working for companies such as Cirque de Soleil and at landmarks such as Lincoln Center.

Education Partner Honorees On Wednesday, April 11th, Nassau BOCES will honor 15 people and organizations that have had a profound effect on public education in Nassau County. The Nassau BOCES Education Partner Awards program pays tribute to outstanding community and business leaders, civil servants, government officials, nonprofit executives and volunteers, organizations, school administrators and staff, students, teachers and Nassau BOCES employees.

During the past 12 years, more than 100 individuals have been honored with the Nassau BOCES Education Partner Award, which recognizes those who have made a substantial impact

on public education in Nassau County. A strategic education partner with local school districts since 1967, Nassau BOCES created the award to pay tribute to those who share its commitment to enabling students of all ages and abilities to achieve their maximum potential.

This year’s honorees will receive their awards at the 12th Annual Education Partner Awards Gala on Wednesday, April 11th.

The gala is sponsored by the Nassau BOCES Educational Foundation, an independent, community-based organization devoted to enhancing educational opportunities for students who take part in Nassau BOCES schools, services or

programs. The Foundation supports initiatives that are beyond the scope of the agency’s budget.

“It gives us great pleasure to congratulate our 2018 Education Partner honorees,” Nassau BOCES Board President Eric Schultz said on behalf of the agency. “They are all extraordinary, sharing our commitment to creating safe and caring educational environments where all students can achieve their greatest potential. Polar Dip Series Raises Funds The iconic Camp Sunshine Polar Dip Series recently concluded and raised $217,000 this winter. Local teams from the Northeast to the MidAtlantic participated in local dips, plunging into the icy waters of the Atlantic Ocean, lakes, rivers and several different polar pools!

“We’re thankful that we can still count on

people to unpack their swimsuits each winter and take a quick dip into freezing cold water to support Camp Sunshine,” said Michael Smith, Development Director at Camp Sunshine.“ A couple seconds of cold are nothing in comparison to what Camp Sunshine families face on a daily basis. This is an easy way to help support your community and we

saw a lot of new faces this year!”

Funds were raised by teams and individuals who committed to taking the icy plunge. In total, 552 participants registered to participate in one of the nine dips.

“As incredible as it is to think that 552 people were able to raise more than $217,000, the fundraising component

is just part of the goal of these events,” said Michael Katz, Executive Director at Camp Sunshine. “Equally as important is the awareness we bring to each area where we host these events. Our goal has always been to reach out to even more families who can utilize our services. The polar dips provide a great platform to help spread the word.”

The funds enable children with lifethreatening illnesses and their families to enjoy the award-winning Camp Sunshine on Sebago Lake in Maine free-ofcharge. At Camp, they join other families on similar journeys and experience the benefits of empathy and encouragement, recovery and recreation, and hope and inspiration.

In all, 23 illness-specific sessions will be hosted at Camp Sunshine in 2018.
