Town Waives Fees To Encourage Outdoor Dining Opportunities
Supervisor Joseph Saladino and the Town Board recently announced that the Town of Oyster Bay will waive all fees to encourage restaurants to offer outdoor dining opportunities throughout 2024. Prior to the global pandemic, outdoor dining was limited and required establishments to pay fees and obtain certain approvals from the Department of Planning and Development. That is once
again not necessary for 2024.
Supervisor Saladino said, “We’ve cut red tape and eliminated fees to encourage restaurants to offer outdoor dining throughout 2024. Street-side dining is a great way for restaurants to bring the food and ambiance closer to potential customers walking by, which can inspire more spur-of-the-moment walk-ins and support our downtown businesses.”
“Outdoor dining has
become a preferred choice for many residents seeking a unique and refreshing experience in their own downtown. We’re happy to keep this trend going while supporting local businesses that invested in outside tents, heaters and covers over the past few years so that customers can enjoy the fresh air and the outdoors while dining locally,” added Town Clerk Richard LaMarca.

After receiving a copy of the CEC CCBHC (Certified Community Behavioral Health Clinic) Veterans Services flyer from a friend, family members of a U.S. Navy veteran had walked into the CEC Health Care Center in Glen Cove seeking guidance and resources to help their loved one.
They were able to meet with the CCBHC Director as well as the CCBHC Veterans Case Manager, both of whom are also veterans, and explained that their brother was living with a parent who had passed away. Their brother had no income and no financial means to maintain the property, the house was without heat or utilities and had fallen into disrepair. He started to experience anxiety and depression about his living
situation and turned to alcohol to help, however, he was reluctant to accept any kind of assistance.
The Case Manager made plans to visit him the next day at the house, and when they arrived he was attempting to repair water pipes that had burst from the freezing temperatures. He declined any immediate assistance, but indicated that he would reach out when he was ready to receive help.
In the interim, the CEC CCBHC Director reached out to the United Veterans Beacon House, which is an agency that provides shelter and housing to Long Island Veterans. The Beacon House staff explained their intake procedures and indicated that they had available capacity. The CCBHC Director
reached out to the veteran and his family members to explain that veteran housing services were available, but although the veteran was appreciative of the efforts, he still preferred to try to remain in the home.
The CEC CCBHC Veterans Case Manager continued to stay in touch with both he and his family members, and weeks later she heard that he was willing to take her up on the housing offer. After meeting at a local library to begin the intake process, later that same day the veteran was transported to the veterans shelter program.
He is now on the road to recovery and experiencing the true benefits of receiving help. If you or someone you love is looking for help too, please call (516) 622-
8888 or visit www.chalresevanscenter.org for more information.

Seaford Team LIFTs Up Education Community At Conference
Educators from across the country and the world learned about the Seaford School District’s unique LIFT program at the Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development’s annual conference in Washington, D.C. on March 23.
Superintendent Dr. Adele Pecora, Assistant Superintendent for Human Resources and Instructional Support Dr. Sheena Jacob, Executive Director for Instructional Technology and STEAM Debbie Langone and LIFT teacher Leah Kukla presented on the program, which was launched in the 2022-23 school year. The elementary program merges library, innovation, fitness and technology.
During their presentation of “We Have LIFT Off” to a standingroom only crowd, Seaford’s educators discussed the trailblazing approach to education that offers students an enriching learning experience. LIFT replaced the traditional library special with a class that integrates various disciplines including STEAM and social and emotional health.
Dr. Jacob said that Seaford submitted a proposal to showcase the LIFT program at ASCD’s annual conference, and it was accepted. Their presentation connected
to the conference theme, “Uniting Minds, Igniting Progress.”
“We were showcasing a program but we also talked about a philosophy that we’re embedding in our school culture,” Dr. Jacob said. “It puts Seaford on the map and promotes the excellence of this program at a national level. It was a very prideful moment.”
Dr. Jacob described LIFT as a “grassroots program” that aligns with Seaford’s mission of promoting innovation. She explained that LIFT was developed with extensive input from central and building administrators, as well as teachers, and with support from the board of education.
The presentation highlighted how to create an innovative program that reimagines the use of existing school facilities, as LIFT is taught in the Harbor and Manor libraries. Dr. Jacob explained that it shows how curriculum can be redesigned to support a vision. LIFT is derived from the Innovator’s Mindset and fosters the pillars of the Seaford Scholars profile.
LIFT is led by the team of Ms. Kukla, Dan Maricondo and Jennifer Rosenberg. Previously the Harbor Elementary School librarian, Ms. Rosenberg now handles instruction on library media skills and Project Lead the Way
units at both elementary schools. When she is at one school, Ms. Kukla and Mr. Maricondo are at the other. They focus on health and fitness, as well as STEAM challenges and robotics.
Ms. Kukla explained that the fitness activities are designed to give students tools to help regulate their emotions and improve their mental health. Cupstacking challenges foster communication, critical thinking, problemsolving and teamwork. Students also participate in community-focused projects that benefit the school, their classmates and teachers.
Newly Diagnosed Breast Cancer Support Group On Zoom
The Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer Program is forming a new online support group for individuals diagnosed with breast cancer within the past 18-months. The group, which is free, will provide the opportunity for people to meet with others, and receive support. Sessions will be
held on Thursdays from 12:00 noon to 1:30 p.m. on Zoom for 6 weeks from May 2nd through June 6, 2024. For more information and to register, call Nina Foley, LMSW at (516) 877-4315.
The Adelphi New York Statewide Breast Cancer Hotline and Support Program offers emotional support and resources to people with and/or concerned about breast cancer. To reach the Hotline, which is staffed by volunteers who are breast cancer survivors, call 800-877-8077 or online at breast-cancer. adelphi.edu. You are not alone.
“The program in its entirety covers so much,” she said. “I have not seen a program that incorporates so many components. It is a great opportunity for children to be exposed to different thinking skills.”
She enjoyed speaking about LIFT and said the response from other educators was very positive, with several coming up after the presentation to ask questions. The Seaford team provided all of the participants with a brochure on the program as well as their contact information for anyone who wants to learn more. Ms. Kukla said that any

“It’s a good reminder that, as educators, we need
to be innovators, as well,” she said. “We need to be creative and flexible in our approach to providing education to children.”

Take Steps Towards A Longer, Healthier Life On National Walking Day
The American Heart Association Invites People To Move More And Stress Less As Organization Celebrates 100 Years Of Lifesaving Work
Physical activity is one of the best ways to improve overall health and manage stress, yet 1 in 4 U.S. adults are sedentary for more than eight hours each day, which can have negative consequences on physical and mental health. The American Heart Association, the nation’s oldest and largest organization dedicated to fighting heart disease and stroke, established National Walking Day to encourage people to move more throughout their day. This year, in celebration of the organization’s Centennial, communities across the country are invited to gather on Wednesday, April 3 to take a walk and raise awareness of the benefits of movement.
“The American Heart Association is a relentless force for building healthier communities, one step at a time,” said Evelina Grayver, M.D., President of the American Heart Association on Long Island and Director, Women’s Heart Program, Katz Institute for Women’s Health, Northwell Health’s Central Region. “National Walking Day demonstrates the progress that can happen when people come together and take steps, big or small, to improve the health of their communities.”
Walking is one of the simplest ways to get and stay active. Physical activity such as walking can help reduce stress, improve mood and
sleep, and lower the risk of diseases. To participate in National Walking Day, the American Heart Association offers these tips:
Ask colleagues, friends or family to join you.
If you work remotely, take a conference call on the go.
If you have a pet, get moving together! Walking is a win-win for the health of you and your pet.
To participate in National Walking Day, invite friends, family, colleagues or even a pet to join in on a walking route of your choice.
For more tips about getting and staying healthy, visit the American Heart Association’s Healthy for GoodTM initiative at heart. org/movemore.

Adventureland has announced the details of its multi-year, five-phase $10 million redevelopment plan of Long Island’s most popular amusement park, as well as a new partnership with Catholic Health. This marks one of the biggest investment projects in the park’s 62-year history since the installation of the ride called ‘Turbulence’ in 2015, which cost $5 million.
The most visible and immediate change is the addition of two new rides for the upcoming 2024 season, which include the ‘Jr. Pirate Ship Ride’ and ‘Moon Chaser.’ The second phase involves the addition
of a first-of-its-kind custom-made ride called ‘Wave Twister,’ which is expected to open in time for the spring 2025 season. There are at least two more planned rides that are to be added over the next three phases. These will be the first new rides since the addition of the ‘FireBall’ in 2022, which was a $2 million investment.
Adventureland estimates that by the end of the fifth phase, there will be a 10% growth in employment to support the new ‘Legacy Corner’ section, which is expected to be completed in 2028.
Catholic Health
Partnership
Catholic Health is sponsoring the main entrance and the City Hall Building, which has now been renamed the Catholic Health Wellness Center. This area is home to ‘Guest Relations,’ ‘First Aid,’ and the ‘Lost and Found.’ Another addition is a blue line throughout Adventureland that will direct guests from anywhere in the park to the Catholic Health Wellness Center. Catholic Health will also have a presence in the park during familyfriendly events like the ‘Egg Scramble’ and ‘Pumpkin Park’. Catholic Health will
also feature a variety of health-focused educational programs for park guests throughout the season.
Legacy Corner
A large part of the investment will be the creation of the ‘Legacy Corner,’ which will be on the front southeast side of the park about a little over an acre in size. In addition to at least four new rides, brand-new concession stands, restrooms, and other amenities will be constructed. Annually, Adventureland hires over 650 part-time employees. The full five-phase project is expected to be completed by 2028.
Retired Rides
In the weeks leading up to its 2024 season opening, Adventureland announced the retirement of the ‘Log Flume,’ ‘Pirate Ship’ ride and ‘Spinning Cars’ to make way for new rides.
New Rides
The ‘Jr. Pirate Ship’ ride is geared towards—but not limited to—children who are from 5-to-8 years old. It is similar to the larger scale ‘Pirate Ship’ ride which was recently removed to make room for the ‘Moon Chaser.’ The ‘Moon Chaser’ is a 45' tall galaxy-themed thrill ride which spins, twists, dips, and inverts riders. This ride is unique
because it is currently the only one in the park that goes upside down. This ride is geared towards children who are 11 years old or older. The second phase will introduce the new ride— ‘Wave Twister.’ This is a first-of-its-kind ride that was custom built for Adventureland. The ‘Wave Twister’ is a family ride. It was made in Switzerland by RES Rides.
The park will be open during weekends and holidays throughout the spring. For more details, visit https://adventureland. us/.

Seaford Mock Trial Lays Down The Law
The case was fake but the knowledge gained was real for members of Seaford High School’s Mock Trial team, who advanced to the Sweet 16 round of the regional tournament, hosted by the New York State Bar Association.
After a successful trip through preliminary and intermediate rounds, Seaford’s team competed at the Nassau County Supreme Court in Mineola on March 20. This year’s team included seniors Angelina Brodie, Kieran Calderaro, Brianna Carnival, Grace Costello, Faith Schaefer, James Schoendorf, Emma Simcox and Erik Zhang.
Students argued in front of attorneys from the Nassau County Bar Association, who serve as judges for cases. Mock trial members took on the roles of attorneys and witnesses. It followed the format of a real court case with opening statements, witness questioning, the possibility of objections, closing statements and a verdict.
“You have to think on your feet and be prepared for the unexpected,” said Angelina, a mock trial member since ninth grade.
“You can rehearse for the trial so many times, but you don’t know what the competition is going to do.”
On March 20, Seaford’s team was the prosecution in a fictitious case, in which a woman was charged with arson and accused of setting her own business on fire to collect insurance money. James played a witness that the defense tried to prove was actually the culprit.
“We all get so engaged in the trial,” said Emma, who gave the closing argument. “It’s a good experience. A number of us are thinking of going into law and this gives use a good idea of what we’re going to see in he future.”
Brianna said that after each trial is over, lawyers from the Bar Association meet with the team to give feedback. It was helpful to hear what they did well and where they could improve,
she said.
Grace, one of Seaford Mock Trial’s presidents leading her fellow peers and helping them learn more about the court process was very rewarding.
“Not only was I able to help them, but in return I was also able to gain valuable insights about being a lawyer,” she said. “It is an experience I will always be grateful for, and I am so lucky to have had an amazing Mock Trial advisor as well as a cooperating lawyer who helped us through everything.”
Mock trial adviser Alexander Becker said it is a great experience for the students to argue in a real courtroom, dress as professionals and interact with law professionals.
“It’s all done at an extremely high level,” he said. “I cannot put into words how impress I am. They don’t seem like high school students when they’re in the court room. It felt like I was watching a real court case.”
