Saladino Announces Paid Internship Opportunities For College Students

Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino today announced the return of internship opportunities for college students who are looking to gain meaningful work experience. The Town will offer an internship program for the 2024 summer season.

“Internships give students an advantage over other job seekers when it comes to work readiness, and I am proud that the Town will once again provide that opportunity for our residents,” Supervisor Saladino said. “This internship program provides an invaluable opportunity for students to receive mentorship

and supervision from experienced government professionals.”

This program compensates students at a competitive rate of $18 an hour, and students will work 19.5 hours per week. The program will operate May 30th through August 7th.

Internships are available in the following Town Departments: Comptroller, General Services, Environmental Resources, InterGovernmental Affairs, Planning & Development, Public Information, Public Safety, Public Works/ Engineering, Town Attorney, Town Board, and Town Clerk. Interns will gain worksite

specific knowledge, learn departmental procedures, assist with general office duties and reports, develop an understanding of worksite specific projects and apply the knowledge gained to benefit the Town of Oyster Bay.

Easter Sunday Mass Celebrations

Celebrations of Easter Sunday Mass are known for their joyous nature regardless of where Christians happen to be. But few, if any, celebrations of Mass can match the scope of the celebration in St.

Peter’s Square in Vatican City. The COVID-19 pandemic forced the public celebration to be canceled in 2020 and 2021, but it returned in 2022. A sizable number of celebrants returned along with it, as estimates

suggested around 50,000 people were on hand to celebrate Easter Sunday Mass on the plaza directly in front of St. Peter’s Basilica on April 17, 2022. Pope Francis led the Mass, which was concelebrated with 280 priests, 25 bishops and 23 cardinals. But the crowd attending Mass was just the beginning, as Pope Francis later delivered his Urbi et Orbi benediction, a papal address and apostolic blessing the pope delivers on solemn occasions, from the loggia of St. Peter’s Basilica before an estimated crowd of 100,000.

State Senator Martinez Announces Small Business Administration Disaster Loan Outreach Center Opens In Babylon Center Will Assist Residents Impacted

New York State Senator Monica R. Martinez is welcoming the opening of a U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) Disaster Loan Outreach Center in Babylon. The center is located at Babylon Town Hall and will assist constituents from across the Fourth Senatorial District who suffered losses as a result of the January 9-10, 2024 storm that impacted the region with heavy rain, high winds, and coastal flooding.

Representatives of the SBA will assist eligible residents and businesses in Suffolk and Nassau Counties who suffered economic losses as a result of the storm to apply for

low-interest loans. Those who can apply include businesses, homeowners, renters, and private nonprofit organizations. They must be in a declared disaster area and meet other eligibility criteria depending on the type of loan. The types of disaster loans available are:

• Business Physical Disaster Loans –Loans to businesses to repair or replace disaster-damaged property owned by the business, including real estate, inventories, supplies, machinery, and equipment. Businesses of any size are eligible. Private, non-profit organizations such as charities, churches, private universities, etc., are also eligible.

• Economic Injury Disaster Loans (EIDL) – Working capital loans to help small businesses, small agricultural cooperatives, small businesses engaged in aquaculture, and most private, nonprofit organizations of all sizes meet their ordinary and necessary financial obligations that

cannot be met as a direct result of the disaster.

• Home Disaster Loans – Loans to homeowners or renters to repair or replace disasterdamaged real estate and personal property, including automobiles.

“Picking up the pieces after a natural disaster can be overwhelming. I thank Governor Hochul for coordinating with our federal partners to get support to the Long Island region and the Small Business Administration for recognizing the severity of this event and for being there to help our neighbors find the resources to recover after

its devastation,” said Senator Martinez.

The Babylon Town Hall Disaster Loan Outreach Center is located at 200 Sunrise Highway in Lindenhurst and will open to the public.

The site’s hours are Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and closed on Saturdays and Sundays.

The filing deadline to return applications for physical property damage is May 10, 2024, and December 11, 2024, for economic injury applications.

Coloring Easter eggs

a time-honored tradition dating back more than 2,500 years. There is evidence that people living in the ancient settlement of Trypillia dyed eggs. Ancient Persians also were believed to paint eggs for Nowruz (Persian New Year).

Christians adopted similar traditions to symbolize aspects of the Easter story. Originally Christians dyed eggs red to represent the blood of Jesus Christ that was shed on the cross, according to Chase Oaks Church.

reports early Christian missionaries adapted the dying tradition to include more egg colors to represent different aspects of the Easter story. Yellow represented the resurrection, blue represented love and red remained a symbol of Christ’s blood. Whether families dye eggs to symbolize the Easter miracle or simply for fun, the following are some coloring tips to enhance the process.

1. Prevent cracked eggs. Most colored eggs are hard-boiled. To prevent cracking during the boiling process, add a

teaspoon of vinegar and a tablespoon of salt to the boiling water. Additional anti-cracking measures include rubbing half a lemon on each shell before boiling.

2. Boil eggs and cool completely. It takes roughly 10 minutes to hard-boil an egg. Fill a pot with enough water to submerge the eggs, then bring it to a boil over medium-high heat. Gently lower the eggs into the water with a slotted spoon. Cover, reduce the heat to a simmer, and cook for 10 minutes. Drain the eggs and cool in a bowl of

water or run under cold tap water.

3. Don’t forget the vinegar. Whether you use colored dye tablets or drops of food coloring from the pantry, use a mix of water and vinegar in the coloring solution. According to Education. com, food coloring is an acid dye and bonds using hydrogen. This chemical process only works in an acidic environment. Vinegar is added to water to make it more acidic and help the dyes adhere more strongly to the eggs and produce brighter colors.

4. Stick to white

eggs. Stores sell both brown and white eggs. The species of chicken determines whether the eggs will be white or brown. When coloring eggs, it might be better to purchase white eggs, as the dyes will show up more vividly on the white shells.

5. Create distinctive designs. By covering portions of the bare eggs before dipping into color, people can create unique designs. Things like masking tape, rubber bands, wax (or crayons), and even twine can be used. The dye will only take on the uncovered

areas, leaving white behind.

6. Dyes are not the only way to color eggs. Everything from watercolor paint to acrylics to decoupage can be used to cover eggs in vivid colors. Egg decorators also can use colored yarns, fabric or stickers. Search for creative materials to set Easter eggs apart this year.

Coloring eggs is a popular Easter tradition, and there are many ways to ensure this beloved activity produces beautiful results.

Town Officials & D.A. Demand Stronger State Laws To Crackdown On Drug Dealers & Fentanyl Possession

Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and the Town Board took decisive action to address the opioid crisis and combat the proliferation of deadly substances in New York State and across the region. Recognizing the urgent need for change, the Town Board passed an official resolution in support of Suffolk County District Attorney Raymond Tierney’s efforts to amend New York State laws related to deadly substances such as fentanyl and xylazine.

“As the opioid crisis continues to devastate families across our nation and in our community, with fatalities increasing across all communities and among all people, it is imperative that we take decisive action to save lives,” said Supervisor Saladino.

“The Oyster Bay Town Board and I are proud to support the Suffolk County District Attorney’s demands to amend state laws to increase punishment for drug dealers and ensure victims get the support they deserve. Together, we are sending a clear message that those who peddle deadly poison will be held accountable for their actions.”

Under current New York State law, individuals can possess up to 8 oz. of fentanyl before bail can be set, a quantity capable of killing over 100,000 people. Additionally, the law does not recognize families of those lost to fentanyl as “victims” and prevents these families from receiving financial compensation. Moreover, the use of xylazine (a

tranquilizer used to sedate large livestock animals) by drug dealers exacerbates the crisis, yet it remains legal to possess in our state.

The Town of Oyster Bay resolution approved today formally declares the Town Board’s support for DA Tierney’s advocacy efforts to amend state law relating to these deadly substances and recognizes that drug dealers who peddle this poison are, in fact, dealing death to our residents.

“The Oyster Bay Town Board is committed to taking decisive action to combat the opioid epidemic and protect the well-being of our residents,” added Councilman Lou Imbroto. “We stand in solidarity with District Attorney Tierney’s campaign to save lives and keep families whole.”

Artists And Musicians Share The Spotlight

In honor of both Youth Art Month and Music in Our Schools month, Seaford Harbor Elementary School is celebrating its talented student artists and musicians throughout March. The programs are essential pieces of a wellrounded education and provide students with creative outlets.

Students are selected by art teacher Christine Donnelly, general music teacher Pamela Brinkman and band director Charlotte Loake on a rotation. Each day in March, one of the three educators chooses a student or a group of students to feature.

Music is highlighted during the morning announcements with student performances. Under the direction of Ms. Loake, fourth and fifth grade band students have showcased different

instruments. Several classes, representing different grade levels, have sung for the school led by Ms. Brinkman.

“I think it is a great opportunity to showcase the students’ musical talents by having them performing on the morning announcements,”

Ms. Loake said. “One of the best things about playing an instrument is performing and this gives the students another opportunity to play while having fun doing it.”

Ms. Loake has also created a buddy program for her beginner students. The fourth graders, who are playing in the band for the first time this year, are paired with fifth graders who play the same instrument. They select the music and practice together.

Ms. Donnelly is

highlighting her students on an art and music bulletin board outside of the cafeteria. She selects student work to display that demonstrates exceptional effort, great technical skills and creativity. Among the pieces that Ms. Donnelly has showcased are abstract drawings and landscape paintings. Each student’s photo is also included with his or her artwork.

“The students at the Harbor have a variety of talents,” said Assistant Principal Caroline Stringer. “This month, as we celebrate music and art in our schools, we decided to share the great talents of our students with the entire school, and each day we showcase a different artist. At Harbor this month, we live by the quote, ‘Music is art to the ear and art is music to the eye.’”
