eaford High School’s star Football player and NYS Wrestling champion James O’Hagan officially signed to play Division I football at SUNY Buffalo. The 285 lb. lineman was named by Newsday as one of the top 100 high school football players on Long Island, James was the only player under Coach Rob Perpall’s leadership to start as an offensive and defensive player on Varsity football in high school.

In Search Of Sunsets By: Jamie Lynn Ryan There’s a saying that goes, “Life is not measured by the number of breaths we take, but by the moments that take our breath away.” The goal, as I see it, is to capture as many of these moments as possible and preserve them in your memory. For me, this process is only enhanced by my love of photography.

Sure, there’s something to be said for stepping back and simply observing the events before you, minus the ever-present haze of technology and gadgets galore. However, I feel

that photos help to string together the missing pieces, forming a minidocumentary of sorts of each of our lives.

One of my favorite pursuits has always been capturing the perfect sunrise or sunset, that moment when all the colors burst forth in a radiant display of supernatural glory.

It is easy to miss the beauty which surrounds us on a daily basis, so caught up are we in our own virtual worlds.

Around every corner, there are lines and angles and reflections of light, which produce some of the most

brilliant visuals.

Flowers, butterflies, candid shots of people in their element… open your eyes and you will see photo opps everywhere.

Add to that the magic of Photoshop and Instagram, and the possibilities for manipulation of an ordinary photo into a masterpiece are endless.

Of course, snap a truly spectacular shot and there may be #nofilterneeded!

As we gingerly take our first steps into the Spring season, take a deep breath, look around and allow yourself to be moved.

The American Red Cross has awarded a $599,655 grant to the Health & Welfare Council of Long Island to support a disaster recovery center for non-profits and volunteers who will help hundreds of homeowners affected by Superstorm Sandy repair their damaged homes.

The funding will be used to house 150 volunteers at the new Long Island Disaster Recovery Center on the New York Institute of Technology campus in Central Islip. Without the grant, these volunteers would not be able to access housing while they work to repair 600 Sandy-damaged homes throughout Nassau and Suffolk Counties over the

The center will serve as the command center for rebuilding-related activities by Long Island long term recovery groups, and will include a kitchen, warehouse, office spaces and meeting rooms.

“Over the past year, the American Red Cross has repeatedly demonstrated its commitment to helping the most vulnerable on Long Island recover from the devastation of Superstorm Sandy,” said Gwen O’Shea, president/ CEO of the Health and Welfare Council of Long Island. “With its latest efforts, the Red Cross is also reaffirming its confidence in the nonprofit sector to harness the power of volunteers to assist storm survivors. The Long Island Long Term Recovery Group is grateful for their support of the Long Island Disaster Recovery Center, which will be the multiagency command center for voluntary agencies. It will allow more groups to assist homeowners in their recovery.”

Superstorm Sandy is the largest U.S. operation by the Red Cross in more than five years, and thanks to the public’s generous support, the Red Cross has received $309 million in donations for Sandy emergency relief and recovery efforts. As of December 31, the Red Cross has spent or committed nearly $287 million – nearly 93 percent of the donated funds.

The Red Cross has also partnered with and funded numerous communitybased organizations to support the recovery of individuals and families on Long Island who were affected by Sandy.

Winter’s discontent has extended its frigid reach into the environs of the Seaford Historical Society Museum. Sadly, the building’s heating structure experienced significant damage in the recent battles with the polar vortex. The burner could not keep up with the historically low temperatures, causing frozen pipes that burst, resulting in water damage.

Consequently, the Historical Society regretfully has had to cancel the scheduled meetings for March 6th and April 3rd, as the current state of the heating system would be inadequate.

Necessary repairs require an upgrade to the current heating system, including a new furnace, revamped ductwork and enhanced insulation.

Any financial support to underwrite these endeavors would be greatly appreciated. All donations are tax deductible, as the Historical Society is a 501c3 organization.

On February 26th, School-Business Partnerships of Long Island, Inc. (SBPLI), along with Farmingdale State College, presented its annual Fred Breithut Scholarship Breakfast Fundraiser at the college’s Campus Center. The admission suggested a donation of $30 that went towards the scholarship, which was awarded to Adam Lopez, Farmingdale State College Freshman, and a graduate of Longwood High School.

At the event, guests enjoyed breakfast while listening to speakers, such as Joani Madarash, Executive Director, SBPLI; Dr. Hubert Keen, President of Farmingdale State College; Dr. Henry Sikorski, Chief Development Officer, Farmingdale State College; Dr. Lorraine Greenwald, Dean of International Education

and Programs, Farmingdale State College; and Gordon Canary, District Office Manager, New York State Senator Phil Boyle’s office. When Mr. Lopez approached the podium, he expressed his gratitude for the scholarship and explained his passion for engineering and business, which led him to double major in Mechanical Engineering Technology and Business.

The scholarship, which was created in 2009, in honor of Fred Breithut, Founder of SBPLI, is awarded to an incoming Farmingdale State College student who has participated in SBPLI’s FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) Robotics programs and meets the eligibility requirements for the scholarship. The student receives $1,000 for each

Fundraising Breakfast semester he/she attends the college (maximum of eight semesters). Mr. Breithut sadly passed away in 2010, and it has become even more important for SBPLI to keep this scholarship intact due to his love and admiration for students. The scholarship truly represents what Mr. Breithut supported: to further the education of the youth on Long Island.

“We are thrilled to award this scholarship to Adam Lopez,” says Ms. Madarash. “He has dedicated a great deal of his time to SBPLI programs and has learned so much. We are confident that he will succeed throughout his four-years at Farmingdale State College. Each year, we hope to change a student’s life with the Fred Breithut Scholarship.”
