School-Business Partnerships of Long Island, Inc. (SBPLI), is pleased to present the 17th Annual SBPLI Long Island Regional FIRST® (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) Robotics Competition (FRC). The event is being held on April 1st and 2nd at Hofstra University’s David S. Mack Sports and Exhibition Complex in Hempstead, with opening ceremonies at 8:30 a.m. on both days.

Families and supporters from all across Long Island are invited to watch 51 teams of students and engineering and technical mentors from Long Island, the New York metropolitan area and Brazil demonstrate their skills in science, technology, engineering and mathematics. They will compete for honors and recognition that reward design excellence, competitive play, sportsmanship and highimpact partnerships between schools, businesses, and communities.

This year’s challenge, FIRST STRONGHOLDSM is based on a popular medieval castle-conquering and battle-strategy game. Robots

gain points by incapacitating defenses and scoring boulders through goals in the opposition’s tower. A visual description of FIRST Stronghold can be found on YouTube.

At the event, families can watch the robots compete, as well as check out the demonstrations from some of the FIRST® LEGO League Junior, FIRST® LEGO League and FIRST® Tech Challenge teams and visit the FESTO traveling exhibit about engineering.

“We’re looking forward to another great SBPLI Long Island Regional,” says Debra Winter, FRC Co-Director, SBPLI. “This event is an important stepping stone for all FRC students. It’s a chance for them to turn a vision into a reality and it opens the door to possibilities that are few and far between these days, like scholarships or job opportunities. Students will also learn important concepts such as teamwork, problem solving and healthy competition while developing the maturity necessary to enrich their professional lives.”

This season, students participating in FIRST robotics are eligible to apply for more than $25 million in scholarships. Over a sixweek timeframe, students work with professional engineering mentors to design a robot that solves a problem using a “kit of parts” and a standard set of rules. Once these young inventors create the robot, their teams participate in regional competitions that measure the effectiveness of each robot, the power of collaboration, and the determination of students.

worked with colleague Derek Paolina, Physics Teacher at the Doshi STEM Institute, to create a class that integrated elements of physics to help dancers in their efforts to maintain proper posture and form.

The STEM students worked with the LIHSA students to evaluate deviations in the dancers’ physical alignment. The fledgling physicists first helped the teen dancers to locate anatomical “bone landmarks” on their bodies with stickers.

They then strung a plum line from the ceiling and had the dancers hold twometer long sticks (for scale) while posing for a series of photographs taken from various angles to capture the anterior, posterior and lateral sides of their bodies.

It finally arrived, my very own upgraded home, complete with a filter, a light, a brand new silk plant, pretty gravel…everything a betta as particular as myself could possibly ask for! While not exactly a birthday present (I spied my Human hiding it under the Christmas tree a few months back), I had the pleasure of moving in just a couple weeks ago after my “one-year-in-the-bowl” festivities.

I have to admit, I was a little apprehensive once I saw the setup; nothing like my tiny travel bowl, which was perfect for joining my Human and her family at the dining room table for dinner or on the coffee table for prime television viewing. No, this one-gallon estate is much better suited for its stationary spot on the kitchen counter – although I hear it can be unplugged and

relocated easily enough, you know, in case there happens to be anything good on Animal Planet.

And my plant, I can’t say enough about its lengthy silk leaves, which create the perfect spot to curl up on and nap at any time of the day or night. No more frayed fins for this betta! This plant is smooth sailing, allowing me to flit to and fro and wedge myself in between its fronds without doing any further damage to my lovely physique.

These days, the Human tends to feed me twice a day, once before she leaves for work in the morning and again when she returns home in the evening – just a few flakes each time (I do have to maintain my figure after all).

I am having a bit of trouble navigating around the filter though, as it tends to blow my precious meal clear across the tank just as I have it within my grasp. What a workout!

I suppose that explains why I’ve been napping quite a bit more lately, either on my favorite leaf or wedged in the corner of my tank, face pressed against the glass, floating above the gravel.

Plus, this new light is great for exploring when I’m home alone, doing my daily laps and combing the bottom for any rogue flakes that may have escaped – exhausting stuff.

When the Human says “lights out,” she means it. Bedtime for Buddy!

I look forward to spending the next chapter of my life in this beautiful new environment.

Continued From 4 successful collaboration, the LIHSA Theater Department reached out to the Doshi STEM Institute’s Principles of Engineering students to help with a production of Dracula. The STEM engineers designed and built a mechanical bat, which the technical theatre students completed with the appropriate theatrical effects. The two teams then worked together on the final phase, equipping the bat with the proper stage rigging.

Taking Training to Heart A second wave of nearly 60 Seaford High School student athletes were trained in emergency procedures, including taking quick action to alert the Seaford Fire Department, administering CPR and using the automated external defibrillator (AED) in case a serious incident, such as cardiac arrest, occurs during a practice or game.

The training, led by athletic trainer and physical education teacher Mike Spreckels, was a continuation of last year’s training presented by the New York Chapter of Anyone Can Save a Life emergency action program. The chapter, founded by Karen Acompora and Melinda Murray who both lost their sons on the playing field, awarded the district a $1,500 grant to train 60 students in their program by Hofstra University medical students and for 10 mannequins and two AED trainers.

“The point of the training is to ensure that students don’t ‘freak out’ in an emergency situation, but react quickly and efficiently because every second counts,” Spreckels said.

To keep the program going, 22 students who were

trained last year, received additional training to qualify as Training Ambassadors to assist with empowering this year’s students with the skills they need to respond to an emergency. To help determine the effectiveness of the training, emergency “Drop the Dummy” drills will be

deemed the “gold standard” of emergency preparedness for school districts by chapter founders Acompora and Murray. Because of its success, last fall at Seaford High School, Heart Screen New York, an affiliate of the Louis J. Acompora Memorial Foundation and the Dominic A. 21 Memorial Foundation, conducted free youth heart screenings valued at about $400,000 to 359 students, trained 450 parents and students in CPR and AED procedures, and identified four students who needed additional cardiac care.

Seaford Athletic Director Tom Condon, who has coordinated the efforts for the district, has served as a valuable resource to other communities who are interested in bringing the program to their schools.

“Our goal is to have all student athletes trained in our emergency action plan and for our students to have those skills as a natural part of our athletic program,” Condon said. “Student safety is our highest priority and anything we can do performed and filmed and evaluated during the spring to improve the effectiveness of our emergency program sports season. and minimize a casualty is something we take very Seaford’s commitment to training students has been seriously.”

National Art Honorees Five Seaford High School students earned recognition for their artistic talent in the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards competition conducted by the Alliance for Young Artists & Writers, a longstanding organization that identifies exceptional talent and brings their work to national audiences.

Senior Natalie Falco won a Gold Key Award in the Digital Art category, sophomore Zoe Zedalis received a Silver Key Award in the Comic Art category, senior Veronica Muzek’s Editorial Cartoon

The Scholastic Arts & Writing Awards competition is the longest-running and most prestigious national recognition program and the largest source of scholarships for young artists and writers. Last year, 300,000 original works across 28 different categories of art and writing entered the competition.

But also it can be a quality-of-life concern, as students may not feel they can escape their dayto-day worries while on campus, instead managing their private lives via the device. What suffers could be the so-called “college experience,” the experts warn us. You may be missing out on enjoying your time on a real, physical campus while you tend to a virtual world.

“Cell phones have a great potential for help and for harm. Sadly, the harmful effects are more prevalent than the helpful ones for today’s students, and they are cheating themselves out of the true college experience,” Brooks added.

One professor told us an anecdote of another professor who gives his students allotted breaks for their cell phone use.

This would be analogous to the cigarette breaks given in the 1970s and prior.

The students have trouble

keeping focus if they can’t get a fix.

Although quality use of the smart phone is more important than using it for fun.

“What the students are reading on their phones isn’t all unimportant content,” said Steven Rothberg, president of College Recruiter, a job placement site. “With well over 90 percent using smart phones and most reading e-mails on their smart phones, students are often using their phones to search for an internship or entry-level job. That type of reading will require more focus on their phones and less on their surroundings than if they were looking at videos of cute kittens.”

We decided to focus on the work of Dr. Ofir Turel, professor of information systems and decision sciences at Cal State Fullerton, for this issue.

“Taken together, the strong psychological rewards people receive from using applications on their cell phones, the inconvenience they feel when they do not use them, and the time it takes to do all this are reasonable possible explanations for the need to spend break time, while walking through university corridors, on the cell phone.”

You have to ask yourself, is what you’re doing on social media really all that important?

“The concept of a “friend” has changed, from having 10-30 friends when I grew up to having hundreds or thousands of “friends” on Facebook, some of whom you have never met,” Turel said. “Managing so many so-called friends, following their daily, and often mundane, routines and activities, is time consuming.

“Overall, the balance between the positive and negative effects of cell phone really depends on the self-control of users

and their understanding that they need to put limits on and control their use patterns. Ultimately, allowing the use of such sites in class assumes a certain level of maturity – students need to refrain from abusing such systems, and use these “recharging” rights wisely.”

So what can be done about this problem, if anything?

“First, we need to increase awareness among students regarding potential problems associated with excessive and sometimes addictive use of some technologies,” Turel said.

Some universities already include a module on Internet/video gaming risks for incoming freshmen students, he noted, so adding a seminar on appropriate smart phone use would be easy.

“Many causes of dropping out have to do with spending too much time on non-productive Internet activities such as playing video games,” he said. “Teachers can explain

the risks to students and discuss their cell phone and social media use policies in class.”

Turel added, “Cell phones, Facebook and other technologies are like food – we need them and we do not want to avoid them. When consumed at healthy levels, for the right purpose and properly (for example, around the table and not while driving) they are very useful. However, overand improper consumption can lead to adverse consequences. We need to be better aware of these risks and teach ourselves to develop the right balance of both food consumption and technology use.”

Brooks concluded, “The addiction that students have to their mobile devices has fundamentally changed the nature of interpersonal relationships and communication. The technology has allowed us to communicate and connect easier and more rapidly, but has caused even more distance between people.”

In just the past couple of years, especially, it seems, at commuter colleges, the majority of students in campus corridors seem to be staring down at their smart phones.

“In the classroom, cell phones are a major distraction,” said Stoney Brooks, a professor of Computer Information Systems at Middle Tennessee State University.

“Many students do not think that multitasking – checking Facebook, texting, watching a harmless YouTube video, etc. – is harmful to their learning. This is not true.

Humans cannot multitask – we rapidly task-switch.

And whenever we switch tasks, our brains have to refocus our processing to the new task, and we forget some of the information that we had for the first task. There are studies that show that, for example, social media use in the classroom is associated with increased stress and lower classroom performance.”

With Daylight Savings Time rapidly approaching, FASNY encourages all New Yorkers to take this opportunity to test their smoke and carbon monoxide alarms and ensure their homes are properly protected against fire. Alarms with removable batteries should be replaced; residents possessing alarms equipped with sealed-in batteries should test the alarms to ensure they are in proper working condition.

According to research by the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), three of every five home fire deaths occur in homes without working smoke alarms, and the vast majority of smoke alarm failures are due to dead or missing batteries. At the end of 2015, Governor Andrew Cuomo signed a new law that will require all smoke alarms sold in New York State to be equipped with sealed-in, non-removable batteries that last for at least 10 years. The law has not yet taken effect, but this is undeniably an important step in improving New York’s fire safety. The 10year alarms require little maintenance, and unlike

alarms with removable batteries, are nearly impossible to deactivate.

“The signing of the 10-year smoke alarm bill was critical,” said FASNY President Robert McConville. “Far too many people have been killed or injured by fires in homes without working smoke alarms, and firefighters frequently encounter disabled or deactivated alarms when responding to calls. Smoke alarms with sealed-in batteries will go a long way toward making New York safer and preventing future fire deaths and injuries.

Regardless of the type that they own, all New Yorkers should check their smoke alarms to ensure they are in working order. This is the single most important step residents can take in protecting themselves against fire.”

FASNY smoke & CO detector tips: • Test detectors at least once a month by using the test button.

• If you have an alarm with a removable battery, be sure to check the batteries every six months, and change the batteries every year. If a battery

is starting to lose its power, the unit will usually chirp to warn you. Do NOT disable the unit.

• Vacuum or blow out any dust that might accumulate in the unit.

• NEVER borrow a battery from a detector to use somewhere else.

• NEVER paint a smoke or CO detector.

• Install at least one smoke alarm on every floor of your home, including the basement, and in, or near each sleeping area.

• Families should also develop and practice a home fire escape plan.

Corina, a dental hygienist from the Adelberg Montalvan Pediatric Dental Practice, visited the school. After a successful inaugural run in 2015, 12 yarn shops from Mattituck to Port Washington will be participating in the second annual Long Island Yarn Crawl from April 7th through 10th.

Over the course of four days yarn crafters - knitters, crocheters, weavers and spinners - are invited to participate in this self-guided tour of our Long Island yarn shops, which will have extended hours and special activities throughout the weekend.

It is a great way for crafters to explore what our local fiber community has to offer and meet other local yarn enthusiasts.

Participants are invited to either pick up their Long Island Yarn Crawl Passport from a participating store or download it from the yarn crawl’s website, and have it stamped as they “crawl” from shop to shop. Crawlers who collect stamps from all 12 stores will be entered to win one of the grand prizes: a $75 gift card from each of the participating stores, or over $400 of yarn donated by gold sponsor Knitting Fever. Canine Companions for Independence Wounded Veterans Initiative provides highly trained assistance dogs, at no cost to Veterans and active duty military personnel with physical disabilities from Iraq and Afghanistan conflicts and to military hospitals and medical centers.

Canine Companions trains four types of dogs to address different types of disabilities. Service Dogs assist adults with physical disabilities, including Veterans from
