Mock Trial Team Gets Courtroom Experience
Whether they plan to pursue a career in law or just want to improve their public speaking skills, students from Seaford High School’s Mock Trial team found great value in a pair of competitions this year.
The Mock Trial team took part in two simulated court cases at the Nassau County Supreme Court building, squaring off against Valley Stream South and West Hempstead high schools. Each time, six members of the Seaford team participated, with three serving as attorneys and the other three as witnesses. Against Valley Stream, they were the plaintiffs, before arguing as the defense against West Hempstead, giving them experience with both sides.
After the holiday break, the team received information about the case, which was a mock civil case about a construction worker suing a homeowner after falling off a ladder. Mock Trial members reviewed the case and all the documents, assigned roles and determined questions
Working Daughters
they would ask in court.
“It’s a full court proceeding, using actual court language,” adviser Alex Becker said. “When I was watching them, there were times I forgot it was Mock Trial and felt like it was a real case.”
This year’s team included Angelina Brodie, Kieran Calderaro, Brianna Carnival, Grace Costello, Samantha Ferrara, Dylan Malone, Emma Masie, John McComiskey, Theodore McComiskey, Faith Schaefer and Emma Simcox.
Samantha noted that besides learning about courtroom etiquette, taking part in Mock Trial was a good lesson in teamwork. A lot of advance preparation was required to make sure everyone was on the same page heading into the competitions.
Emma Simcox said she gained tremendous confidence to speak in front of others. Theodore echoed that sentiment, noting it was a different kind of public speaking than the prepared class presentations they are used to. In Mock Trial, they had to be ready for unexpected questions and
objections from the other side.
“You have to be thinking about what’s coming next,” Dylan added.
Angelina was the only student to take part in both cases, serving as an attorney in one and a witness in the other. She also was on Mock Trial as a freshman, when it was held over Zoom, and said nothing compares to an in-person courtroom experience.
The Mock Trial cases were argued in front of actual judges, and the team also had a volunteer attorney mentor as they prepared for the competition.
Although the team did not win either case, they are poised for great success in the future, as most of the students plan to be back next year and now have this experience to learn from. Faith noted that they had many successes while arguing their two cases.
“You can recognize when you’ve done well and can be proud of yourself, even if you didn’t win the whole thing,” she said.
(NAPSI)—Approximately 23 million women balance caring for an aging parent with going to work and, often, raising children of their own, When businesses support these working daughters, it’s good for them, their parents and the companies themselves. Learn more at www. workingdaughter.com.

“Perseverance is the word that comes to mind when I think of this cohort of graduates,” says Brad Slepian, Adult Education Assistant Principal. “This group has worked extremely hard to complete their respective courses and are now career ready for jobs in their selected fields. Canine Companions is a non-profit organization that enhances the lives of people by providing highly trained service dogs and ongoing support to ensure quality partnerships. They proudly o er their support services free of charge to recipients.
Clients come to Canine Companions because of their reputation, the quality of their dogs, the experience of their training sta and the desire to lead a life with greater independence. The organization is proud to have various chapters and training centers across our nation, with their Northeast Region (Long Island Chapter) located right here on Long Island, in Medford.
Did you know this non-profit runs a Veterans Initiative™? Through this initiative they place service dogs with veterans. Canine Companions’ expertly trained service dogs can perform physical tasks to enhance independence including opening doors, picking up prosthetics and alerting a veteran with hearing loss to important sounds in their environment.
With the increase in veterans facing post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), Canine Companions launched a program in 2018 to directly place service dogs with veterans with PTSD. Dogs are trained to identify each veteran’s unique stressors and perform tasks that directly disrupt escalation of symptoms, thus enhancing their quality of life. The dog supports their handler in crowded public situations by creating barriers and distance that might provoke anxiety for individuals with PTSD. Additional tasks such as nightmare interruption, turning on lights and retrieving items are taught to support veterans’ daily lives.

We can’t pay the veterans back enough, and I’m proud to be part of an organization serving them.” Mr. Woycik helped organize a Veterans Day event, Salute Independence , which awards local veterans who continue to serve their communities. Thanks to his tireless work, this annual event has raised more than $500,000 in total so far to support the organization’s Veterans Initiative™.

Seaford Harbor Elementary School students are becoming well versed in many different types of writing. Through writer’s workshop, they are exploring their creativity while honing their literacy and research skills.
Third graders in Danielle
Persichilli’s class recently completed biography research projects. Students could pick anyone famous to research from the past or present and had to use at least three books to gather information. They also could search online and worked with librarian

Ms. Persichilli’s young authors learned how to take the information they gathered and write it in their own words. Each report needed to include the person’s background, such as when they were born and where they grew up, as well as accomplishments and challenges they faced in life. Students also had to identify which of the 16 Habits of Mind their subjects displayed, and include a quote.
When they were finished, it was time for a red carpet event. Students dressed up as the athletes, authors, entertainers and scientists they had researched and shared their PowerPoint presentations.
In Denise Baldassarre’s second grade class, students worked on realistic fiction books. They created original stories within the realm of possibility.
Second graders worked on the stories for several weeks, planning, writing, revising and illustrating their pieces before it was time to publish. Using Seesaw, they made videos reading their books aloud, which were then linked to QR codes. Students enjoyed sharing their stories with each other at a publishing party.

Dune Day At TOBAY Beach
Residents who love visiting the beach and want to help protect the shoreline can join Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and members of the Town Board at the Towns’ annual Dune Day, scheduled for Saturday, March 25th at TOBAY Beach. The event begins at 10 a.m. by the dunes at TOBAY.
Supervisor Saladino stated, “The Dune Stabilization Project brings together residents of all ages in an effort to protect and preserve
our beautiful shoreline and environment by planting stalks of dune grass. Dunes along our south shore continue to face environmentally damaging storms that have a significant impact on the beach. Statistics indicate that the planting of dune grass provides a natural shield that is perfect for withstanding storm surges and high winds.”
The Dune Stabilization Project helps preserve our beach and barrier island for future generations. Volunteers

Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and Councilman Lou Imbroto invite residents to be “Freezin’ for a Reason” at the annual Polar Plunge benefitting Special Olympics New York on Saturday, March 25th at TOBAY Beach.
“Many of our residents head to TOBAY Beach for summer fun, but this event provides an enjoyable and charitable reason to spend a great day at the beach much sooner,” said Supervisor Saladino. “Participants will have an opportunity to prove their mettle and their compassion by wading into the chilly waters of TOBAY

Beach to raise funds for the athletes of Special Olympics New York.”
The event kicks off with winter festival fun and registration starting at 9:30 a.m., with the plunge beginning at 11 a.m. Requested donation is $25 per participant. Plungers who raise $150 receive a commemorative Polar Plunge sweatshirt.
All of the money raised through the Polar Plunge® helps provide year-round sports training and competition as well as leadership, health and inclusion programs for individuals with intellectual disabilities in your community.
“This polar plunge is sure to create lasting memories for all participants while supporting a very worthwhile cause,” added Councilman Imbroto. “Special Olympics New York changes lives through the joy of sports and the Town of Oyster Bay is proud to partner with this outstanding organization to help make this event a success. Please join with me in braving the chilly waters for a great reason.”

Town Announces Environmental Poster Contest For 4th Grade Students
To raise awareness of pollution and its impact on Mother Nature, Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and Councilwoman Vicki Walsh announced the return of the Town’s Environmental Poster Contest, open to all 4th grade students in the Town of Oyster Bay. This year’s poster contest, Our Town Our Environment, invites youngsters to create a poster depicting ‘Marine Pollution Solutions.’
“This poster contest presents a great opportunity to bring environmental awareness to our young people, making them more knowledgeable on the importance of protecting our waterways and safeguarding our natural resources,” said Supervisor Saladino. Students should submit a poster to communicate awareness of how items of plastic litter harm our waterways and various ways to solve the issue of marine pollution, including proper recycling. Submissions should be made on poster paper (no larger than 12”x18”). No edible items
should be used on the poster. The top three winning posters to be displayed at a Town facility and showcased in a future Town of Oyster Bay Environmental Newsletter.
“This contest is being cosponsored by The Waterfront Center, Friends of the Bay, and the Cornell Cooperative Extension Marine Program. These organizations greatly contribute to our efforts in further protecting and preserving the environment,” said Councilwoman Walsh. “I invite all 4th grade students to participate in this great program, which provides an opportunity to become more educated on the serious issue of how to protect our environment and improve the quality of our waterways while having the potential of winning some great prizes.”
Prizes will be awarded for the top three submissions, with 1st Place receiving a private tour of Oyster Bay Harbor aboard a Friends of the Bay vessel, $200 gift certificate for the Waterfront Center in Oyster Bay, a $100 gift certificate to Long Island
Aquarium, a tree planted at the winning student’s school for Arbor Day, a nautical trivia game, Friends of the Bay apparel and a Choose Local F.I.S.H. t-shirt from CCE. Submission deadline for the contest is Friday, March 31st, with winners to be announced on Earth Day, April 22nd. Second and third place winners will also receive a gift certificate to the Waterfront Center, receive a tree planting in their school district, as well as apparel and reusable items.
Along with their poster submission, students must include an entry form, which is available at www.oysterbaytown. com/postercontest. Mail or email posters to the Town’s Department of Environmental Resources, Attn: Poster Contest, 29 Spring Street, Oyster Bay NY, 11771. Entries can also be emailed to environmental@oysterbayny.gov with the subject line ‘2023 Poster Contest.’ Visit www.oysterbaytown. com/postercontest for more details.

Supervisor Joseph Saladino, The Workforce Partnership and New York State Department of Labor are offering a Free Job Fair, which will take place on Thursday, March 30, at the Town of Oyster Bay Ice Skating Center, located at 1001 Stewart Avenue in Bethpage. There is no charge for admission and parking is free. Veterans’ admission begins at 10:00 a.m., while doors for General Admission open at 10:30 a.m. The event runs until 2:00 p.m.
Employers from across Long Island will be seeking candidates for various positions. Some of these include management, licensed professional, hospitality, banking, staffing and technical.
“We have helped thousands of residents find meaningful employment through our career center and private sector jobs fair,” said Supervisor
Saladino. “The Workforce Partnership and the Town of Oyster Bay are committed to helping residents find meaningful employment opportunities as well as assisting local businesses in recruiting qualified employees. This Free Job Fair will connect private and public sector employers with job seekers.”
The Town of Oyster Bay serves as administrator of The Workforce Partnership, a consortium of local governments funded by the Federal Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act that provides free valuable resources to both employers and job seekers at Career Centers in Hicksville and Massapequa. These centers help train employees to meet the needs of the private sector, connecting qualified job seekers with employers, and by assisting applicants in accessing job
opportunities. The Centers offer Resource Rooms, which are equipped with state-of-the-art computer workstations, complete with Microsoft software and internet access. Additionally, these Centers offer residents access to job listings, resource materials, photocopiers, fax machines and telephones. The Centers provide employability and computer workshops, as well as career counselors who will guide residents through their job search. Computer workshops are taught on-site in modern computer labs. Residents can increase their marketability by updating or acquiring new computer skills at the Centers.
For more information about this program and the many other great services that the Town’s Workforce Partnership program offers, contact (516) 7974560 or email business@ oysterbay-ny.gov.
