Seaford Middle School Honored With Schools To Watch Designation
Providing students with a quality middle-level education is at the core of all decisions made by administrators, faculty and staff at Seaford Middle School. That work has been recognized by outside educators as the school was named to the Essential Elements Schools to Watch list.
A Seaford Schools to Watch committee worked throughout the 2023-24 school year and into the first few months of this year to put together an extensive application that included school data and descriptions of programs, initiatives and practices. Principal Daniel Smith, then-Assistant Principal Jennifer Bisulca, new Assistant Principal Joseph Polite and about a dozen teachers, guidance counselors, custodians and secretaries comprised the committee.
“We realized that we embodied the qualities that any middle school on the Schools to Watch list have,” said Mr. Smith, principal of Seaford Middle School since 2010. “I’m extremely happy for the teachers and the school itself. We’re in a very distinguished group of schools.”
The school had to evaluate itself in four areas –academic excellence, social equity, developmental
responsiveness and organizational structure and processes. The members of the committee were each on a subcommittee for one of these areas.
Art teacher Stephanie Lucia, in her 17th year at Seaford Middle School, helped compile feedback from faculty to write the developmental responsiveness narrative for the Schools to Watch application. She is thrilled that the committee’s hard work, which spanned more than a year, paid off.
“I know that we’re a good school and deserving of this,” she said, “and it’s nice to get recognition from others. For a small district, we offer a lot. We have a lot of options for students and that’s one of the things that we do really well.”
Lisa Jones, a math teacher in her 18th year and a member of the academic excellence subcommittee, added, “I’m so proud of everyone. We do so many wonderful things in this building and it’s so nice to have that seen.”
Mr. Smith said that many best practices for middlelevel education are found in Seaford. There are teams at each grade level, in which a group of students have the same teachers for their core subjects. Each team has common planning
time every day, along with opportunities for teachers of the same subjects to meet. There is an advisory program, A.S.K., with sessions every other week that focus on topics outside of the curriculum, such as organizational skills, navigating friendships or substance abuse awareness.
“The advisory program is really designed to meet the needs of our students currently,” said Mr. Polite, who joined the middle
school staff in the summer of 2023.
Seventh and eighth graders can take on a leadership role through Teen Leaders Care. After completing a training program, they become the presenters for sixth grade advisory sessions.
Seaford Middle School’s slogan is “Exploration, Discovery, Growth” and that is exemplified in the Exploratory program. Teachers create courses on topics outside of the typical school curriculum, and one period per day is devoted to these unique electives. Topics include American Sign Language, cartoon art, chess, forensics, landscape architecture, the stock market, woodworking and more. Exploratory classes meet every other day for semester, so students can take up to four per year.
“There’s a really good variety of classes at Seaford Middle School,” sixth grader Brielle Garcia said. “There’s something for everyone, no matter what your interests are.”
“It’s all about the school’s encouragement for us to try new things,” added
eighth grader Henry Brock.
Eighth grader Roran Cassidy, the student council president, said what stands out most for him is the culture of the school.
“Everyone is kind here,” he said. “The students definitely feel welcome. The teachers, secretaries and guidance counselors are great and very helpful.”
Madison Spinella added that school spirit is very big emphasis, with team and grade-level competitions throughout the year, themed dress-up days and opportunities to help others through community service projects.
“It’s really cool and it’s well-deserved,” she said of Schools to Watch. “Everyone here works very hard to accomplish things.”
During a two-day site visit in January, Essential Elements evaluators met with several student groups to gauge their experiences at Seaford Middle School. The visitors, all experts in middle-level education, also spoke with teachers, Board of Education trustees, central administrators and the district’s high school and elementary principals.
“There was no single program that sold us to the evaluators,” Mr. Smith said. “According to the site visit team, it was the overall experience of Seaford Middle School and our focus on all areas of middle-level education that made us special. That’s a real feather in our cap.”
Seaford Middle School will receive a detailed report, highlighting the school’s strengths but also including recommendations for improvement. The Schools to Watch designation lasts for three years, and continued growth will be key to remaining on the list.
“We can continuously improve from this,” Mr. Polite said. “We’re going to have a road map of what we can do to make our school even better.”
Mr. Smith, Mr. Polite and other members of Seaford’s Schools to Watch committee will be invited to Washington, D.C. in June. In addition to an awards presentation, they will attend workshops and network with educators from other nationally recognized middle schools.

To
awareness
the impact of trees in our communities, Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and Councilwoman Michele Johnson announced the return of the Town’s Environmental Poster Contest, open to all 4th grade students in the Town of Oyster Bay. This year’s poster contest, Our Town Our Environment, invites youngsters to create a poster showcasing the importance of trees in preserving our environment, with a theme of ‘Trees for Tomorrow.’
“This poster contest presents a great opportunity to
Environmental Poster Contest
bring environmental awareness to our young people, making them more knowledgeable on the importance of protecting Mother Nature and safeguarding our natural resources,” said Supervisor Saladino. Students should submit a poster to communicate awareness of the essential role of trees in our lives and may consider these key facts in their design:
• Oxygen Production: Trees absorb carbon dioxide and release oxygen, ensuring clean air. Did you know? 100 trees remove 53 tons of carbon dioxide and 430 pounds of other air pollutants per year.
• Air and Water Purification: Trees cleanse the air and water, promoting a healthier environment.
• Shade and Cooling: Trees provide shade, cooling our neighborhoods naturally.
• Wildlife Habitat: Trees offer food and homes for various wildlife, contributing to biodiversity.
• Health Benefits: Trees encourage outdoor activities, promoting physical well-being.
Submissions should be made on poster paper (no larger than 12”x18”). No edible items should be used on the poster. The top
three winning posters to be displayed at a Town facility and showcased in a future Town of Oyster Bay Environmental Newsletter.
“This contest is being co-sponsored by Friends of the Bay and The Waterfront Center, two organizations we proudly partner with throughout the year to help our efforts in protecting and preserving the environment,” said Councilwoman Johnson. “I hope all fourth-grade students join us in this year’s program and take advantage of the great opportunity to become more knowledgeable on the importance of protecting our
environment.”
Prizes will be awarded for the top three submissions, with 1st Place receiving a private tour of Oyster Bay Harbor aboard a Friends of the Bay vessel, a $200 gift certificate for the Waterfront Center in Oyster Bay, a tree planted at the winning student’s school for Arbor Day, a nautical trivia game and Friends of the Bay apparel.
Second and third place winners will also receive a gift certificate to The Waterfront Center and have a tree planted in their school district.
Submission deadline for the contest is Friday, March 29th,
with winners to be announced on Earth Day, April 22nd.
Along with their poster submission, students must include an entry form, which is available at www.oysterbaytown. com/postercontest. Mail or email posters to the Town’s Department of Environmental Resources, Attn: Poster Contest, 29 Spring Street, Oyster Bay NY, 11771. Entries can also be emailed to environmental@ oysterbay-ny.gov with the subject line ‘2024 Poster Contest.’ Visit www.oysterbaytown. com/postercontest for more details.

Town of Oyster Bay Supervisor Joseph Saladino and Councilwoman Michele Johnson, together with Councilwomen Laura Maier and Vicki Walsh, announced that nominations are now being accepted for the Town’s 2024 Women of Distinction Program. During Women’s History Month, throughout the month of March, residents are invited to nominate extraordinary women who have made a difference in their communities.
“Each year, the Town has the honor of recognizing women who go above and beyond to improve the lives of those around them through our Women of Distinction
Program,” said Councilwoman Johnson, who serves as Chairwoman of the Women of Distinction Committee. “If you know a special woman who helps make your community a better place to live, we invite you to nominate her to be a 2024 Town of Oyster Bay Woman of Distinction.”
Supervisor Saladino added, “We are proud to recognize women in our Town and invite residents to submit nominations of those who make a difference and enrich the lives of others. We look forward to sharing their stories and recognizing their efforts to make our community, families and Town a better place to live, work and raise a family.”
Women of Distinction will be recognized at a special awards ceremony hosted by the Town Board in May. Nominations may be submitted for any achievement or honorable cause performed by the nominee. The Town seeks to recognize individuals for their contributions to the arts, education, environment, athletics, community or civic service, volunteerism or business. Honorees must live or work in the Town of Oyster Bay. To submit a nomination for the Women of Distinction Awards Program, please visit www.oysterbaytown.com/ women or call (516) 624-6380 for an application.

Easter Sunday Mass Celebrations
Celebrations of Easter Sunday Mass are known for their joyous nature regardless of where Christians happen to be. But few, if any, celebrations of Mass can match the scope of the celebration in St. Peter’s Square in Vatican City. The COVID-19 pandemic forced the public celebration to be canceled in 2020 and 2021, but it returned in 2022. A sizable number of celebrants returned along with it, as estimates suggested around 50,000 people were on hand to
celebrate Easter Sunday Mass on the plaza directly in front of St. Peter’s Basilica on April 17, 2022. Pope Francis led the Mass, which was concelebrated with 280 priests, 25 bishops and 23 cardinals. But the crowd attending Mass was just the beginning, as Pope Francis later delivered his Urbi et Orbi benediction, a papal address and apostolic blessing the pope delivers on solemn occasions, from the loggia of St. Peter’s Basilica before an estimated crowd of 100,000.
