Stop World Hunger Presents Upcoming Events Over the past 39 years, Stop World Hunger Inc. has forwarded $136,110.65 to Catholic Relief Services to assist them in their efforts to feed God’s hungry children “where the need is greatest”, regardless of race, religion and/or nationality. In addition, they collect food for our hungry neighbors on Long Island.

Stop World Hunger is

pleased to launch their 40th year of tennis fundraisers. A special Tennis & Pickleball party will take place at Carefree Racquet Club in North Merrick on March 21, 2020. The party will run from 8PM-Midnight and admission is $20/players and $7.50/non-players.

Players will be guaranteed two hours of playing time (doubles) and refreshments will be available.

Also, applications are now available for their annual Stop World Hunger Spring Tennis Tournament.

This consists of singles for men, women and seniors (60+), as well as doubles for men, women and mixed teams. The cost if $6 for singles and $10 per team for doubles. Matches are to be played at mutually convenient times and sites across Long Island between

April 1, 2020 and June 10, 2020. The deadline for registration is March 23, 2020.

Take Heart With Tea An apple a day may keep the doctor away, but a recent study found drinking tea might keep the cardiologist at bay.

The USDA reported that men and women who drank black tea for three weeks reduced their total and bad cholesterol (LDL) levels by an average of 7.5 percent. Researchers concluded that drinking tea may reduce the risk

of coronary heart disease.

Antioxidants called flavonoids, found in both green and black teas, are thought to be potent weapons in the fight against heart disease.

That news may be especially important for women, given that heart disease kills more women than all forms of cancer combined including breast cancer.

St. Patrick’s Day has become a beloved celebration in which people of Irish descent and even those with no trace of Irish blood gather to celebrate.

Over the years, celebrations of St. Patrick, who was instrumental in bringing Christianity to Ireland, have evolved.

Traditions now include wearing green clothing, toasting with a pint of Guinness, eating traditional Irish cuisine, and prominently displaying shamrocks. Attending St. Patrick’s Day parades also is part of the festivities.

Even though St. Patrick was a missionary who visited Ireland many centuries ago, the origins of much of the revelry surrounding St. Patrick’s Day, are more recent.

Callahan, General President of the International Union of Operating Engineers.

Callahan traces his lineage to County Limerick and County Kerry, and will lead the 259th anniversary of this beloved parade.

St. Patrick is a man revered in Ireland and around the world. Despite being an influential figure in the history of Ireland and Christianity, St. Patrick is a saint in name only.

Millions of people around the world celebrate whom they believe to be an official saint each year on March 17. However, according to Irish Central and writer Ken Concannon, the formal canonization process in the Roman Catholic Church was not in place during its first millennium, a period of time in which Patrick

was active. The official process for canonization was not instituted until around the 12th century, long after Patrick died.

St. Patrick joins two other Irish saints who were never formally canonized. The only Irish saint to be canonized is Fergal, also known as St. Virgil of Salzburg. He was canonized by Pope Gregory IX in 1233.

St. Patrick became a “saint” by popular opinion. In the early years of the Church, many martyrs and those whose lives were especially holy were considered saints, even if they were not

canonized. It is probable, with the approval of a bishop, that St. Patrick was considered a saint for these reasons.

The concept of St. Patrick not being an official saint adds to the mystery of the man, who was born in Britain and was said to have converted the Irish from paganism with fabled symbolism that borrowed from ancient traditions.

Even if his status as saint is informal, St. Patrick certainly made his mark, with a worldrenowned celebration commemorating his achievements.

Town of Oyster Bay Receiver of Taxes Jeffrey Pravato today announced two additional Property Tax Assessment Grievance Workshops will be offered for residents looking to acquire information on how to challenge their 2021-2022 property tax assessments.

The deadline to challenge the assessment on your home was recently extended to Thursday, April 2nd. The free workshops will be held on: • Tuesday, March 24th at 7pm at Town Hall, located at 54 Audrey Avenue in Oyster Bay. This seminar is offered in partnership with County Legislator Josh Lafazan and the Nassau County Assessment Review Commission.

• Wednesday, March 25th at 2pm at the Hicksville Community Center, located at 28 W. Carl Street in Hicksville.

This seminar is offered in partnership with

County Legislator Rose Walker and Hempstead Town Receiver of Taxes Jeanine Driscoll. The workshop is open to residents from both the towns of Hempstead and Oyster Bay. “While Nassau County determines your value, we in Town government want to make sure you know that you have a right as homeowner to challenge your assessment.

Remember, your assessment can only be lowered as the result of a challenge – it can never be raised – and this workshop helps you challenge for free,” said Receiver of Taxes Pravato. “If you are a homeowner who disagrees with the assessed value of your property, I invite you to attend one of these Property Tax Assessment Workshops, as the property tax grievance deadline of April 2nd is approaching.”

This year’s Pick a Reading Partner program at Seaford Manor Elementary School had a fitting end as students shared books with their partners. The three-week initiative came to a close just before the February break with buddy reading on Feb. 13 and 14.

Classes were paired up so kindergartners read with third graders, first graders were with fourth graders and second graders were with fifth graders.

Children selected books based upon their interests and their independent reading levels, then

found a cozy spot to read together, whether it was on the rug, in a corner or on a beanbag chair. They were also encouraged to wear their pajamas and bring in a stuffed animal.

Principal Debra Emmerich said that the older students, who have mastered important reading strategies, served as reading role models for their younger peers.

“They are able to coach their younger buddies with tricky words or sentences that don’t make sense,” Ms. Emmerich said. “The younger buddies get to

showcase their talents, too, by showing their big buddies strategies that they have learned. Little kids learn to read and big buddies read to learn!”

In addition to buddy reading, the three-week PARP program included mystery reader visits, a book swap, a visit from author Susan Verde and poem in my pocket day.

Students kept reading logs to keep track of the books they read at home and in school, and strengthened their vocabularies with word searches and crossword puzzles.

Six Long Island industry leaders from Universe Home Services in Seaford were honored at the Nassau BOCES Barry Tech Industry Advisory Recognition Brunch, held at the Joseph M. Barry Career and Technical Education Center. The event was an opportunity for Nassau BOCES Board members, administrators, faculty, staff and students to thank local business leaders for their ongoing guidance and support.

The Seaford industry partners honored at the brunch were: Kate Powell, Owner of Universe Home Services; Service Manager Tim Braddock and Assistant Service Manager James Price; Human Resources Manager

Sean Reeves, and his colleagues Thomas Reeves and Jeff Schaefer. They were saluted by Nassau BOCES administrators, government officials, community leaders and Barry Tech alumni. They were given a red carpet welcome by student ambassadors, awarded with plaques and certificates thanking them for their contributions, and treated to a delicious brunch prepared by Barry Tech Culinary students.

They were also given a comprehensive tour of the state-of-the-art Joseph M. Barry Career and Technical Education Center, and invited to meet withfaculty and guidance counselors to inform curriculum for the coming year, ensuring

that it is up to date with the most current industry standards.

“Nassau BOCES is all about building careers, sharing knowledge, developing skills and helping high school students figure out their paths in life. We cannot do this without the support of our industry partners,” said Work Experience Teacher Coordinator Randi O’Moore. “They are crucial to the success of our students.
