eaford’s Troop 239 headed off to Island Rock for some rock climbing recently, where the boys were attached to safety harnesses and scaled the walls. After reaching the top, they rappelled back down to the ground. It was a great trip! The Scouts who participated were: Bryant, Luke, Jake, Carl, Buddy, Andrew, Patrick D., Michael and Patrick H. Everyone had a great time and can’t wait until the next field trip!

In many countries, having a bicycle can have a critical effect on whether or not you are able to get to a job or school; it has been found that income goes up 14 percent when a family has a bicycle. For many a sewing machine means having the possibility of making a livelihood.

Bette Bass who was a Peace Corps Volunteer in Peru and now lives in Massapequa, says, “The

donation of one bike or sewing machine can literally help put food on the table and smiles on the faces of a whole family.”

Pedals for Progress also promotes bicycle repair businesses in the developing world. A community owned nonprofit bike store will get its first containerized cargo shipment for free (about 450 bicycles); that repair store then has to earn enough money selling the repaired bikes to pay for the next shipment.

David Schwidenback, the president of Pedals for Progress, says the collection on April 18th will be sent to FIDESMA, a non-profit, nonpolitical, non-religious development foundation in Chimaltenango Guatemala.

Nearly ten years’ worth of weekly columns under the moniker “In Step,” a title suggested by my dear friend, co-worker and “agent” of sorts, since passed, Peter Schleifer. It was meant to be a take off on my - at that point - 13 years of dancing and the idea that, somehow, I could find a way to engage our weekly readership with my random ramblings and musings on life.

It sounded like a pretty tall order then, and remains so, but having had a passion for writing since the days of poetry units and short story exercises in elementary school, I felt I was up for the challenge. To be given the opportunity to write for a living, to do something I loved and reach an audience… well, that’s pretty special any way you slice it.

The topics may have been varied, the styles quite diverse, but at the root of it all was that feeling that this was something I could do.

Sure, there have been weeks when coming up with an original idea, any idea, was somewhat tedious. Scanning through the archive, there have been plenty of recycled concepts, even a few exact reruns of “classics.” (Classics?

Really? Who do you think you are, Ed Lowe?) But through it all, that same passion has always remained. This is why I studied journalism. This was the reason for my career choice, in spite of all those detractors who warned that

it was impossible to make a living in this field.

Ultimately, though, it was exactly that “reality” that served as added inspiration for me to go after my dreams.

After all, who’s to say what’s profitable, what’s a guarantee for success? And what is success, if you’re not doing something you love?

Ten years. 500 columns.

Such a long time; such a lofty milestone. So much has changed since July of 2005, much of which has been reflected in those columns.

They serve as a public diary of sorts, documenting the highs and lows, and a showcase for my efforts to somehow encapsulate them into words.

Student Spotlight INSPIRATION SENSATION

L’Damian Washington, NFL wide receiver, experienced heartbreak many times throughout his efforts to become a professional athlete.

L’Damian grew up with his three other brothers, LaCourtney, Tomarious and Tobias. His parents were Sonya Washington and William Myles. L’Damian was born in May of 1991, in Shreveport, Louisiana.

When L’Damian was just 6 years old, his father was murdered. Ever since, his mother took care of all four children by herself. Mrs. Washington was the biggest sports fan L’Damian knew. Her smile was the first smile he saw after every game. At age 15, L’Damian’s best friend was murdered. During that same year, Mrs. Washington had been cheering for L’Damian at his high school basketball game when she had a stroke and passed away. He quotes, “I wish I was cherishing her today instead of just her memory.”

LaCourtney, the oldest brother, took charge as head of the household. He worked as much as he had to in order to put food on the table and keep their home.

L’Damian started playing football at age 9. He was passionate about playing football. He had an outstanding football season in his senior year with a 3.5 GPA. L’Damian visited Louisiana Tech and Missouri colleges. He loved everything about the University of Missouri. The support from his brothers led L’Damian to signing with Missouri.

In his 2012 season, which was Missouri’s first foray into the SEC, he contributed 443 yards with 2 touchdowns. L’Damian’s career-best performance was in his senior year, with 50 receptions, 893 receiving yards, and 10 touchdowns. All this time, L’Damian was devoted to keeping

Pro Day was his last chance to make an impression on scouts.

That day, he recorded a 4.39 second 40-yard dash, which ranked among the 20 fastest receivers in the 2014 NFL draft. The Dallas Cowboys signed L’Damian as an undrafted free agent after the draft. He is currently a wide receiver on the Miami Dolphins.

L’Damian sees his story as one of an unimaginable opportunity rather than heartbreak. The register shall be filed in the Office of the Director of the Public Library at 2234 Jackson Avenue, Seaford, New York, for five days prior to the day set for the election, that such register will be open for inspection by any qualified voter of the District between the hours of 10:00 A.M. and 4:00 P.M. from Wednesday, April 8th, 2015 through Tuesday, April 14th, 2015, except Sunday, April 12th, 2015.

The petition for the nomination of candidates for the office of a member of the Board of Trustees of the Public Library to be elected at the Special District Meeting to be held on April 15th, 2015, must be filed with the School District Clerk at the Seaford Manor School, Washington Avenue, Seaford, New York, not later than the 30th day preceding the election, at which the candidates nominated are to be voted upon. Petitions must be received in the School District Clerk’s Office by 2:00 P.M. on March 16th, 2015.

To nominate a candidate for the Public Library Board, the petition must be signed by at least 25 qualified voters of the School District, shall state the residence of each signer and the name and residence of the candidate, and shall describe the specific vacancy for which a candidate is nominated,

Pursuant to the pertinent provisions of the Education Law of the State of New York, a public hearing will be held by the Board of Trustees of the Library, for the purpose of discussion of the expenditures of funds and the budgeting thereof for the Seaford Public Library for the fiscal year 20152016. Said hearing will be held on Monday, April 6th, 2015, at 7:00 P.M. in the Seaford Public Library Meeting Room, 2234 Jackson Avenue, Seaford, New York.

Qualified school voters of Seaford Union Free School District, Seaford, Town of Hempstead, County of Nassau, New York, who are presently on the register are considered permanently registered, unless they fail to vote for four years or otherwise become ineligible to vote. Anyone who registered during the period provided by the Board of Education, up to and including, April 7th, 2015 will be eligible to vote at the Special District Meeting on April 15th, 2015.

Notwithstanding the provisions of the Education Law with respect to registration of voters, any person otherwise qualified to vote who is registered under the provisions of the Election Law shall be entitled to vote at the Special District Meeting on

A qualified school voter of Seaford Union Free School District who will be unable to appear to vote in person at the Special District Meeting on April 15th, 2015 may submit an application for an absentee ballot to vote upon the adoption of the Budget and for the election of trustees of the library board. Under the terms and provisions of Education Law, such application must be received by the Seaford Public Library at least seven days before the election if the ballot is to be mailed to the voter, or the day before the election if the ballot is to be delivered personally to the voter. No absentee voter’s ballot shall be canvassed, unless it shall have been received in the office of the Seaford Public Library not later than 5:00 P.M. on the day of the election.

A list of all persons to whom absentee ballots shall have been issued will be available in the Office of the Director of the Public Library at 2234 Jackson Avenue, Seaford, New York, between the hours of 10:00 A.M. and 4:00 P.M., weekdays through Tuesday, April 14th, 2015, and such list will also be posted at the polling place at the election of a member of the Public Library Board, to be held on April 15th, 2015.

Keynote Speakers Named Alzheimer’s Disease Resource Center, Inc. (ADRC) has announced that restaurateur B. Smith and her husband, Dan Gasby, have been named keynote speakers for its 11th Annual Alzheimer’s Education Conference & Expo 2015 on March 26th at the Melville Marriott Long Island, located at 1350 Old Walt Whitman Road in Melville.

B. Smith was recently diagnosed with youngonset Alzheimer’s disease, which affects those under the age of 65. The couple will discuss her struggles with Alzheimer’s disease and how they are coping and supporting each other during this difficult time.

Ms. Smith is a restaurateur, author, and multi-industry businesswoman. She has

been heralded by The New York Times as “a Renaissance woman,”

by Chuck Scarborough as a “domestic goddess,” and by The New York Daily News as “one of the most important African-American style mavens of all time.”

She is a broadcast talent, entrepreneurial spokesperson and multiple award-winning recipient across a wide range of fields. Ms. Smith also earned kudos when she returned to the stage in her Off-Broadway debut in “Love, Loss, and What I Wore,” the awardwinning play by Nora and Delia Ephron.

In 2012, Ms. Smith was inducted into the American Chef Corps, part of the U.S. Department of State’s newly formed Diplomatic Culinary Partnership with the

James Beard Foundation.

Mr. Gasby serves as the Chairman of B. Smith Enterprises, Ltd., and has an extensive background in television, marketing and production. Formerly, Ms. Smith and Mr. Gasby were co-hosts at “The B. Smith and ‘Thank You Dan’ Show,” which was heard on Sirius XM Radio.

He is a former member of the Board of Trustees at American University in Washington, D.C., and longtime member of the Board of Governors of the International Radio and Television Society Foundation.

The event will begin with a caregiver fireside chat, to help provide encouragement and inspiration for guests.

There will also be six seminars discussing such topics as Alzheimer’s research, behavioral/

communication training, nutrition, and ADRC’s legal advisory committee will provide updates within the organization.

The closing plenary session will be The Purple Angel Project from Alzheimer’s Speaks. In addition, motivational speaker Jim Ryan will be presenting an interactive session on managing thought.

“It’s exciting to have such passionate and accomplished people such as Ms. Smith and Mr. Gasby who are able to speak about the issue of Alzheimer’s disease,” said Mary Ann MalackRagona, Executive Director/CEO, ADRC. “Education is key when battling Alzheimer’s.”

The Education Conference and Expo is part of a two-day event to educate and inform

those about Alzheimer’s disease, the causes of the disease and prospective treatments. On March 25th, 2015, ADRC will host its second annual Physician’s Outreach Dinner at the Long Island Marriott from 6 to 9 p.m. The focus of the event will be improving care through quality diagnosis, treatment and resources. Medical and legal experts will discuss research, diagnosis, pharmacological interventions, community resources and the legal and financial components of longterm care planning. (The Physician’s Outreach Dinner is only open to board-certified and boardeligible physicians.)

Athlete Training In a room equipped with CPR mannequins and automated external defibrillators (AEDs), more than 60 student athletes from Seaford High School became empowered to help their teammates should they suffer a serious injury during a team practice or game.

Thanks to a grant valued at $1,500 awarded by Anyone Can Save a Life, an emergency action program for afterschool practices and events, students received a two-hour training session conducted by Hofstra University medical students in which they rotated to three stations: CPR, AED and 911 procedures.

As part of the grant, the district was also awarded 10 mannequins and two AED trainers.

“The hope is that once student athletes are trained, they will step up next year and lead the training program for upcoming athletes,” said Mike Spreckels, physical education teacher and athletic trainer who won the grant for the district. “Too often student athletes have been victims of fatal accidents. We are extremely excited that we could bring this program to our athletes in an effort to prevent a tragedy from happening.”

In its second year, the New York chapter of Anyone Can Save a Life emergency training program was founded by Karen Acompora and Melinda Murray who both lost their sons on the playing field. Louis Acompora died from a condition known as commotio cordis, which resulted from a blow to his chest while playing lacrosse during his first high school game. Dominic

Murray passed from sudden cardiac arrest, resulting from cardiac hypertrophy related to an underlying heart condition. To prevent other fatalities, and to ensure that schools in New York State have the tools and resources to respond in the event of an emergency, the founders brought the program to 10 school districts last year and 10 this year, with the goal of training students in all Long

“Every three days a young athlete dies from sudden cardiac arrest,” Murray said to the Seaford athletes. “Our goal is to make sure you are not paralyzed by fear and can initiate a chain of survival.”

Students learned the difference between a heart attack and sudden cardiac arrest, the risk factors, and the warning signs before learning how to administer CPR and the AED. Then, with the assistance of the medical students, they got right down to business, taking turns applying the skills they learned on the mannequins.

“I always wanted to learn CPR so this was a perfect opportunity,” said varsity softball player Dakota Secondino, a senior.

“We had a friend who slid into third and got knocked out not too long ago. She had a concussion for a week. It was a scary situation, but we definitely feel more prepared for an emergency through this program. It should be a requirement for all high school athletes.”

Lacrosse player Jack Lasher, a junior, agreed. “I think we’ll feel calmer in an emergency situation,” he said.

According to Seaford Athletic Director Tom Condon, student safety is the district’s highest priority. The athletic program has 10 AEDs that are checked regularly to ensure they are in proper working order.
