Pal-O-Mine Equestrian Kicks-Off Virtual Fundraising Hay Drive

Pal-O-Mine Equestrian, Inc., a private, not for profit organization

providing a comprehensive therapeutic equine program using horses

to facilitate growth, learning and healing for children and adults with

disabilities, has kicked off its virtual fundraising hay drive. The three-month

campaign is intended to help Pal-O-Mine raise funds to pay for the hay needed to feed its herd and help offset the rising costs of hay.

To grow hay, hundred of acres of land is required in addition to extensive physical labor and expensive equipment to deliver hay from the farmer to Pal-O-Mine’s herd. Here are some details associated with the cost factors:

-One bale of hay weighs 50-70 lbs.

-One bale of excellent quality hay costs approximately $14; an increase of 40% from last year.

-Pal-O-Mines herd eats 18 bales (1,000 lbs.) of hay daily

-Pal-O-Mine receives a delivery of 810 bales of hay every six weeks at a cost of $6,600 at a cost of approximately $57,200 annually.

Through the virtual

fundraising hay drive, PalO-Mine’s goal is to raise $12,000.

The Charity of the Month for March is Canine Companions®

Canine

Companions is a non-profit organization that enhances the lives of people by providing highly trained service dogs and ongoing support to ensure quality partnerships. They proudly o er their support services free of charge to recipients.

Clients come to Canine Companions because of their reputation, the quality of their dogs, the experience of their training sta and the desire to lead a life with greater independence. The organization is proud to have various chapters and training centers across our nation, with their Northeast Region (Long Island Chapter) located right here on Long Island, in Medford.

Located at 286 Middle Island Rd in Medford, the Long Island Chapter works to raise awareness, recruit new puppy raisers and volunteers and support one another’s work on behalf of the Canine Companions’ mission. This Chapter is a lively network filled with opportunities for social engagement from puppy classes to fundraisers. Beyond the satisfaction of doing good work for Canine Companions, lifelong friendships are often formed among chapter members.

The benefits of having a service dog can be indescribable, often life-changing.

Canine Companions provides dogs for an array of disabilities; they o er service dogs for adults, children and veterans with a physical or auditory disability or posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), as well as professionals working in a health care, visitation, criminal justice or education settings. The organization typically places between 325 and 375 service dogs per year.

In recent years, Yucca, a Facility Dog, became a new furry member of the Phillips Avenue Elementary School in Riverhead, NY (placed by Canine Companions). She helps students learn responsibility, come out of their shell and even helps those that experience issues at home, such as past traumas or emotional/social issues.

“Having a dog there to just talk to or pet can really help the children,” explained teacher Emilee Raynor. “Yucca loves our

students and they know she is not judging them, so they take more risks when working with her than with their peers.”

Yucca is incorporated into daily lessons, such as language practice, when students read to her and describe the commands Yucca is following. “I have already seen the huge impact that Facility Dog Yucca has made in the classroom. Students are so excited to come to class. They work hard for Yucca and understand their responsibilities.”

Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino announced new lifeguard employment opportunities at Town Pools and Beaches, including a new competitive starting salary of $18 per hour for all lifeguards, as well as openings for 15-year olds to lifeguard at community pools for the first time.

“From having the opportunity to work at one of the Town’s fantastic summer facilities and building confidence, selfesteem, and leadership skills, to making new friends and helping others, working as a lifeguard is one of the best summer jobs around,” Supervisor Saladino said. “Our lifeguards provide an invaluable service in protecting our residents and have helped save countless lives in both pool and ocean waters. The Town is accepting lifeguard applications from candidates who possess Nassau Lifeguard Certification and a current CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer. Additionally, the Town is offering Red Cross Lifeguard Training and Nassau County Certification courses for residents who are not certified, but would like to be. Upon successful completion of these two courses, residents will be eligible for employment as a lifeguard with the Town of Oyster Bay and the Town will then pay all fees for both courses. There are also many future opportunities for advancement, including as Swim Team Coaches, Swim Lesson Teachers, Head Lifeguards, and Lifeguard

Managerial positions.

“This summer, the Town of Oyster Bay is making it easier than ever to become a lifeguard. We’re offering all the certification and training courses you need to apply, covering the fees of these courses for successful candidates, welcoming 15year olds to our lifeguard ranks at Town community pools, and increasing our lifeguards’ starting salary to $18 per hour in recognition of the life-saving work they do,” added Supervisor Saladino.

For Charity Seeking Boxers For 2023 Main Event

Long Island Fight for Charity (LIFFC), the nation’s only all-volunteer charity fund raising event and program is now conducting its search for 2023 volunteer charity boxers. Since 2003, over 350 men and women have earned the title of LIFFC Alumni Boxer, volunteering their time to fundraise for local charities and get in shape to box in the annual main event.

The LIFFC 18th Annual Main Event will be on Monday, November 20, 2023 and will feature at least 10 bouts between volunteer charity boxers who have demonstrated their personal commitment to raising a minimum of $10,000 for the Fight for Charity organization, benefiting local charities, endure physical training and participate in promotional activities and media interviews.

Since its inception, the event has raised over $1.75 million for local, Long Island-based charities. Applications are now

being accepted for volunteer charity boxers who will enter training to prepare them to step in the ring at the 18th Annual Main Event. Boxing experience is not required. What is required is a commitment to fundraising, “character,” a willingness to train and be ready to meet a business colleague toeto-toe in the ring in front of a thousand fans. This is a rare opportunity for individuals to make a personal commitment of time, talent and to truly “give back.” Since 2003, LIFFC has distributed funds each year to Long Island charities including: Long Island Community Chest, The Genesis School, National Foundation for Human Potential (FREE) and many others.

Town Clerk LaMarca Announces Special One-Stop Passport Weekend

“Residents looking to apply for a new passport are invited to visit Town Hall during Passport Weekend to receive assistance,” said Town Clerk LaMarca. “We can help you with organizing your documents, obtaining a photo and submitting the documents for approval.”

Requirements for applying for a passport

include:

One 2x2 color photograph with a clear view of the applicant’s face against a plain white or light colored background. Photos will also be available for $10 at both Town Halls North and South during Passport Weekend.

Proof of U.S. Citizenship – Previously issued undamaged U.S.

passport, certified birth certificate, Consular Report of Birth Abroad or Certification of Birth, Naturalization Certificate, or Certificate of Citizenship.

Proof of Identity – Naturalization Certificate, Valid Driver’s License (cannot have been issued or renewed in the last six months), Current Government ID (city,

state or federal), Current Military ID (military and dependents).

This service does NOT apply to Adult Renewals unless your Passport is expired for 5+ years.

With hospitals facing a nationwide blood shortage, Oyster Bay Town Councilwoman Laura Maier invites residents to attend a Blood Collection Drive on Tuesday, March 28th from 1pm to 7pm at the Hicksville Athletic Center, located at 167 S. Broadway in Hicksville.

Please consider participating in this blood drive to help bolster our blood banks and ensure as many people as possible can be helped. Together, we can give the gift of life though

Appointments are preferred for the Town’s Blood Drive. To qualify as a donor, a person must be between the ages of 17 and 75 years old (16 with parental permission and 76 or older with a doctor’s note), weigh at least 110 pounds and not have donated blood within the last 56 days. Anyone who received a tattoo within the past 12 months is ineligible to donate. It is recommended that donors eat well (low fat) and drink fluids in the days before the Blood Drive. Additionally, all donors will receive a voucher for a free Blizzard at Dairy Queen.

Councilwoman Maier added, “It’s quick, easy, and safe to donate a single pint of blood which can save up to three lives. Donating blood at the Hicksville Athletic Center, is an incredible way for all of us to pitch in and give back, to help ease the burden of our Healthcare Heroes as they continue to provide lifesaving efforts.”
