Helping You Help Others
By Noelle Lambert
The Charity of the Month for March is Canine Companions®
Music Courses
Canine Companions is a non-profit organization that enhances the lives of people with disabilities by providing highly trained service dogs and ongoing support to ensure quality partnerships. Independence shouldn’t be limited to those who look or live a certain way, so they are proud to provide their dogs and support services free of charge to recipients.
Clients come to Canine Companions because of their reputation, the quality of their dogs, the experience of their training sta and the desire to lead a life with greater independence. The organization is proud to have various chapters and training centers across our nation that operate o of these six core values:
Teamwork: They believe in the joyful and transforming power of the partnership between an individual and their dog.
Compassionate Service: They treat everyone they serve with respect and empathy.
Integrity: They do what is right guided by honesty, accountability and sincerity.
Community: They practice inclusion and acceptance to build positive relationships within their diverse community.
Excellence: They conduct ourselves with professionalism in pursuit of the highest standards.
Innovation: They continually pursue new ideas to unleash their greatest potential.
Canine Companions uses Labrador Retrievers, Golden Retrievers and crosses of these two breeds. Most of their dogs come from their selective breeding program, but occasionally donated puppies are accepted if they meet the strict qualification requirements. Their puppies are raised by volunteers who selflessly take them to classes that teach them basic obedience and house manners. When
F U E L
the puppies are old enough to enter their professional training program, they head to one of their six regional training centers, located in Northern California, Southern California, Texas, Ohio, New York and Florida.
The organization typically places between 325 and 375 service dogs per year. Once a dog has completed professional training, it is ready to be matched with a person with disabilities. The match is made at one of their regional training centers during Team Training, a two-week group class.
During Team Training, students learn to manage the service dog’s behavior, to direct the dog to respond to commands it has learned and to assume responsibility for maintaining the health and well-being of the dog. Each dog can really make all the di erence in the life of its new partner.
A Canine Companions service dog can not only open doors, pick up dropped items, turn on the lights and alert its partner of important sounds, but they can also increase confidence and independence.
Music courses can have a profound impact on students, potentially helping them perform better in other subjects. A recent study from the American Psychological Association found that high school students who take music courses score significantly better on exams in subjects like math and science than their nonmusical peers. The improved academic performance was more pronounced among students who learned to play an instrument rather than vocal music. The researchers behind the study examined the records of more than 112,000 students in British Columbia. Among the students whose records were studied, 13 percent had participated in at least one music course in grade 10, 11 or 12. Researchers discovered that, on average, children who learned to play a musical instrument for many years and ultimately played in a high school band or orchestra were the equivalent of roughly one academic year ahead of their peers in regard to their English, mathematics and science skills.

Virtual Lecture: Oscar Winning Songs
Presented by: Richard Knox
Friday, March 10th Time: 1:00pm
Seaford High School senior Raeyln Luft will share her vocal talents on the biggest stage yet, as she has been selected to the AllEastern music conference, hosted by the National Association for Music Education.
The Eastern Division Conference will be held from April 13-16 in Rochester, New
York. Raelyn was selected as an alto for the Mixed Chorus honors ensemble. She and fellow singers from the Northeast will perform on April 16 at the Kodak Hall-Eastman Theater. In addition to performing, Raelyn will get to attend a variety of workshops led by accomplished musicians.
This year, Raelyn was
named an All-County musician and was an alternate for the New York State School Music Association’s All-State music festival. Chorus teacher Yvonne Bendzlowicz noted that the All-Eastern music festival is even more selective and congratulated Raelyn on her accomplishment.

Since 1934 the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has recognized one song written specifically for a film released during the previous calendar year as worthy of an “Oscar.” Past winners have included such wonderful numbers as “Moon River,” “It Might as Well Be Spring,” “All the Way” and “Over the Rainbow.” During this program we will be able to view archival video clips of the actual presenters and recipients for over a dozen of these classic songs as well as experience many of the original artists’ renditions as they were first introduced to movie audiences. Register now online with your email address to receive the link to the Oscar Zoom session.

Minority Leader Abrahams, Minority Caucus File Legislation To Make Volunteer Firefighters, Ambulance Workers
Eligible For Property Tax Exemptions After Two Years Of Service
To ensure that Nassau County’s volunteer firefighters and ambulance workers receive the maximum property tax exemption allowable under a recently amended state law, Nassau County Legislature Minority Leader Kevan M. Abrahams (D – Freeport) and his Minority Caucus colleagues have proudly introduced legislation that will make firefighter/ambulance workers eligible for property tax exemptions after completing two years of volunteer service. The previous eligibility threshold was five years of service. On Friday, Jan. 20, the seven members of the Minority Caucus filed
legislation that would opt Nassau County into a state law, enacted in December 2022, that allows volunteer firefighters and ambulance workers to apply for up to a 10-percent exemption on the assessed value of their property (exclusive of special assessments) after completing two years of service. Volunteer firefighters and ambulance workers must live in the community served by their volunteer organization to qualify for this exemption.
Days after the Minority Caucus filed its legislative proposal, the Majority Caucus re-filed the proposal on Monday, Jan. 23 with all 19 legislators as sponsors, all but

“The Minority Caucus is deeply appreciative of the commitment that our courageous volunteer firefighters and ambulance workers demonstrate as they serve and protect the residents of Nassau County on a daily basis,” Minority Leader Abrahams said. “We are gratified that our proposal appears on track for unanimous approval, and we look forward to providing an incentive that will make Nassau County more affordable for our selfless volunteers and encourage more people to step up and answer the call of community service.”
Hometown Heroes Recognition Applications Now Available
Oyster Bay Town
Supervisor Joseph Saladino and Councilman Steve Labriola announced that the Town is now accepting applications for the 2023 Hometown Heroes’ Community Recognition Program. This initiative recognizes the service and sacrifice of the brave men and women of the United States Armed Forces – both living and deceased – who are current or former Town of Oyster Bay residents.
“My Town Board colleagues and I were amazed by the outpouring of support this program has received from residents, businesses and local heroes,” said Councilman Labriola.
“We are proud to return this important initiative to our communities and look forward to further recognizing our veterans, active duty
service members, and their families for their commitment to defend our freedoms and democracy.”
Banners bearing the nominated individual’s name, rank, photograph and area of service will be unveiled throughout selected park facilities across the Town of Oyster Bay in the months leading up to Veterans Day in November. Any interested individual or organization who would wish to sponsor a banner can remit $75 to sponsor the production of a banner. No profit is made from this program. Once the banners are displayed, the Town will maintain the banners, and will remain on display until Veterans Day, where they will then be taken down to avoid any inclement winter weather and returned to the service family or their loved ones.

The show is based on the 1974 movie directed by Mel Brooks. It includes a cast of 38 student-actors. Playing the leads are Dylan Quinn as Dr. Fredrick Frankenstein, Raelyn Luft as Inga, Karl Leudesdorff as the monster, Erin Ortiz as Frau Blucher, Troy Tyznar as Igor, Hailey Falta as Elizabeth, Kieran Calderaro as Inspector
Kemp, Gianna Maringo as Ziggy and Dylan Wong as the Hermit.
“It’s not easy to do a Mel Brooks comedy, and they nail it,” director and choreographer Samantha Gates-Weber said of her actors. “They’re very talented.”
Ms. Gates-Weber said that the two-act show features a lot of dancing. Major musical numbers are “The Brain,” “Transylvania Mania,” “Together Again” and “Puttin’ On the Ritz.”
Also supporting the show are musical director and
pit conductor Gina Salvia, producer and set designer Curtis Tripoli and lighting director Nick Coacci.
Show times are Friday, March 3 at 7:30 p.m., and Saturday, March 4 at 2 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. in the Seaford High School auditorium. Tickets are $10 for students and $12 and are available by contacting Mr. Tripoli at ctripoli@seaford.k12. ny.us. There will also be a free performance for local senior citizens and scouts on Thursday, March 2 at 4 p.m.

Supervisor Saladino added, “This is an especially meaningful way to honor those who bravely and selflessly served our nation. Together as a community we will honor the brave men and women of the United States Armed Forces who sacrificed a great deal for our nation, as well as many local veterans who continue to serve our community and their fellow veterans through advocacy efforts.”

Friends Of America’s Vet Dogs
Chinese Auction Fundraiser April 15
A local volunteer community service group, whose mission is to provide service dogs to assist veterans-in-need, last week donated $12,700 to America’s Vet Dogs – sponsoring two more service dogs.
“Friends of America’s Vet Dogs” started in 2015 and has successfully sponsored 31 highly trained service dogs for veterans since. The group carefully names each dog to honor an unsung hero of our military, to honor someone who brought
great credit to our military or to recognize someone who significantly helped veterans-in-need.
Their most recent donation enabled the sponsoring of Service Dogs ‘Tammy’ and ‘Kyle’. In 2016 the group sponsored and named Service Dog ‘Sully’, who went on to serve President George W. Bush. ‘Sully’ now continues to serve wounded veterans at Walter Reed Military Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland.
“Friends of America’s Vet Dogs” will hold their

primary annual fundraiser, a walk-through style Chinese Auction, in Sayville on April 15. To support their mission or for information regarding the Chinese Auction event, contact group co-founders Cliff Miller or Patricia Summers at (631) 5679493 or write to Friends of America’s Vet Dogs, Attention Cliff Miller, PO Box 18, Bohemia, NY 11716-0018. Any checks should be made payable to “America’s Vet Dogs”, which is a 501c3 non-profit corporation.
“100 days smarter” was the oft-repeated phrases at Seaford Harbor and Manor elementary schools on Feb. 9. Kindergartners celebrated the milestone day in their young educational careers, with only about 2,200 more days to go until graduation.
Kindergartners at both schools dressed up as if they were 100 years old. At Manor, they paraded through the school with bells, tambourines and other noisemakers to share
their enthusiasm. The walls of the kindergarten hallway were lined with their 100-day posters, an annual tradition to mark the centennial day. Students created posters with 100 objects, such as balloons, pennies and stickers.
In classroom centers, children sang and danced, colored 100-day crowns and did various counting activities.
Harbor kindergartners also enjoyed 100-themed
activities. Students made paper gumball machines with 100 colorful dots, wrote what they would do with $100 and practiced counting to 100 in different ways.
First graders at Harbor also going in on the action. Children enjoyed STEAM activities where they stacked 100 cups, put 100 clothes pins together and built towers out of 100 wooden sticks.

Seaford Manor Ups Its Game For Indoor Recess
Recess is meant to be a time of unstructured joy for children, and they look forward to playing, bonding with friends and getting some fresh air. But when the weather doesn’t cooperate, recess moves indoors and Seaford Manor Elementary School is making sure those days are just as enjoyable.
The school’s Shared Decision Making Committee, a collaborative group of administrators, teachers, aides and parents, came
up with the idea of indoor recess carts for every classroom. The committee came up with a list of items for each grade level, then created Amazon wish lists. The school partnered with the PTA, which spearheaded fundraising efforts.
After receiving donations, the items were purchased, including arts and crafts supplies, board games, STEAM materials and more. The recess carts were assembled by Manor’s custodians and

stocked by members of the committee.
“These carts will boost creativity, collaboration and imagination,” said first grade teacher Angelina Lee, a member of the Shared Decision Making Committee. “They will completely transform indoor recess for the children. The outpouring of support was truly incredible and we couldn’t have made it happen without the generous donations from our school community.”
2023 Youth Dek Hockey Program
Oyster Bay Town Councilman Tom Hand announced that registration for the Town’s Spring Youth Dek Hockey Program will soon open both online and in person. Dek Hockey is a variation of traditional ice hockey, where the games are played sans skates on the ‘dek’ of an ice rink after the ice has melted away for the season. This co-ed program includes instruction and games for the 8U Age Group and both practices and games for the 10U, 12U, and 14/16U group.
“Boys and girls who are enrolled in the Town’s Youth Dek Hockey Program will have a great opportunity to not only improve their hockey skills, but to also learn important life lessons such as good sportsmanship
and teamwork from our talented coaching staff,” Councilman Hand said.
“This is a great activity for youngsters, whether they have experience in hockey or are just learning and are interested in playing hockey for the first time.”
The Dek Hockey season runs from April 1 to July 1 and takes place at Ellsworth Allen Park (Motor Ave, Farmingdale).
Player evaluations will take place here on April 1st at 10am, and a parent and volunteer meeting will be held on April 6th at 6:00pm at the TOB Ice Skating Center in Community Room 2. Full Team Registrations are being accepted; no evaluation is needed if a player is registered with a team.

portal. To register, please create an account, and be prepared to upload proof of residency and a copy of the child’s birth certificate.
In person registration will take place on March 11th from 9:00am to 12:00pm at the Town Ice Skating Center (1001 Stewart Avenue, Bethpage). The program will cost $95 for residents, and $110 for nonresidents. Each child will need to provide their own equipment, including during player evaluations. Families must provide proof of residency and a copy of their child’s birth certificate at registration. If a session is canceled due to inclement weather, make-up day(s) will be attempted. For more information, please call (516) 433-7465 ext. 8234.

PUZZLE ANSWERS:
Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and Receiver of Taxes Jeffrey Pravato announced that the Town of Oyster Bay will host a Pet Food & Supply Drive in partnership with LI Cares. The drive will take place from March 1st to March 31st with a focus on collecting for the family members most vulnerable to hunger, residents’ pets. Long Island Cares formed Baxter’s Pet Pantry in 2009 to assist in feeding dogs, cats, ferrets, rabbits, caged pets, fish, reptiles and all others considered family members.
“Pets truly are members of our family,” said Tax Receiver Pravato. “Pet food and supply donations will help furry friends in need, which in turn keeps pets at
home with their loved ones. The Town of Oyster Bay is proud to partner with LI Cares to collect generous donations for this worthwhile cause.”
The creation of Baxter’s Pet Pantry by Long Island Cares has helped distribute over one million pounds of pet food, all of which has been donated through pet food drives like this one and corporate donations.
“Unfortunately many beloved pets are placed into shelters or given away because families cannot afford the necessary food and supplies,” added Supervisor Saladino.
“When struggling families have to make choices to heat their homes, buy medication or feed their own families, pets can become an afterthought. Pet food
drives like this one can be a real lifesaver for both pets and their families.”
Those interested in supporting the Town’s Pet Food & Supply Drive can place donated items in drop-off boxes located in the following Town of Oyster Bay locations:

Town Announces Environmental Poster Contest For 4th Grade Students
To raise awareness of pollution and its impact on Mother Nature, Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and Councilwoman Vicki Walsh announced the return of the Town’s Environmental Poster Contest, open to all 4th grade students in the Town of Oyster Bay. This year’s poster contest, Our Town Our Environment, invites youngsters to create a poster depicting ‘Marine Pollution Solutions.’
“This poster contest presents a great opportunity to bring environmental awareness to our young people, making them more knowledgeable on the importance of protecting our waterways and safeguarding our natural resources,” said Supervisor Saladino.
Students should submit a poster to communicate awareness of how items of plastic litter harm our waterways and various ways to solve the issue of marine pollution, including proper recycling. Submissions should be made on poster paper (no larger than 12”x18”). No edible
items should be used on the poster. The top three winning posters to be displayed at a Town facility and showcased in a future Town of Oyster Bay Environmental Newsletter.
“This contest is being co-sponsored by The Waterfront Center, Friends of the Bay, and the Cornell Cooperative Extension Marine Program. These organizations greatly contribute to our efforts in further protecting and preserving the environment,” said Councilwoman Walsh.
“I invite all 4th grade students to participate in this great program, which provides an opportunity to become more educated on the serious issue of how to protect our environment and improve the quality of our waterways while having the potential of winning some great prizes.”
Prizes will be awarded for the top three submissions, with 1st Place receiving a private tour of Oyster Bay Harbor aboard a Friends of the Bay vessel, $200 gift certificate for the Waterfront Center in Oyster Bay, a $100
gift certificate to Long Island Aquarium, a tree planted at the winning student’s school for Arbor Day, a nautical trivia game, Friends of the Bay apparel and a Choose Local F.I.S.H. t-shirt from CCE. Submission deadline for the contest is Friday, March 31st, with winners to be announced on Earth Day, April 22nd. Second and third place winners will also receive a gift certificate to the Waterfront Center, receive a tree planting in their school district, as well as apparel and reusable items.
Along with their poster submission, students must include an entry form, which is available at www. oysterbaytown.com/ postercontest. Mail or email posters to the Town’s Department of Environmental Resources, Attn: Poster Contest, 29 Spring Street, Oyster Bay NY, 11771. Entries can also be emailed to environmental@ oysterbay-ny.gov with the subject line ‘2023 Poster Contest.’ Visit www.oysterbaytown. com/postercontest for more details.
An Elevated Risk
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, some medical conditions can put people at an elevated risk for certain infections.
Heart disease, diabetes mellitus type 1 or 2, chronic lung disease, including COPD, and kidney failure are among the conditions
that can increase a person’s risk for certain infections. The CDC notes the importance of recognizing this potential connection, as such a recognition can help people understand the role vaccines can play in promoting their overall health. It’s also vital that men and women realize the connection
between their lifestyle choices and their risk for certain infections. For example, excessive consumption of alcohol and smoking are two controllable risk factors that can elevate a person’s risk for infection. Learn more about vaccinations and your risk for certain infections by visiting www.cdc.gov.
