I’m fairly good with directions. For someone who, as a passenger, is rather oblivious to her surroundings, once in the driver’s seat, I can generally navigate with little trouble. Of course, in this day and age, there is always the added benefit of GPS to fall back on. And by benefit, I mean often maddening source of frustration and bewilderment. Case in point: my friend and I have, over the last several years, attended several of the laser light shows at the Vanderbilt Planetarium. Of course, there are several possible routes to take, but all roads ultimately lead to one winding, somewhat meandering path through the
hilly terrain of Centerport. As these shows are generally in the evening, I always plug the address into the phone’s map so as to be sure I don’t miss a turn en route. Of the approximately half a dozen times we have headed this way, I can honestly say we have never managed to travel the same way twice. Never. Not once. Just last week, as if to prove the point, my phone’s darling virtual assistant proceeded to take us on a grand tour of the residential area surrounding the planetarium, complete with dozens of unnecessary turns (followed by U-turn’s and “rerouting”), forks in the road (continue heading straight, she said) and even a pass over a small body of water (do you remember there
being a bridge here before?). And on the return trip, there was more of the same – except, not quite the same, as we detoured through an entirely different neighborhood. How is this possible?? At a certain point, it became more a source of amusement, a fun guessing game as to which way she might send us next. Amazingly, our time of arrival only fluctuated by a minute or so, in spite of the fact that our route never came close to matching the virtually straight line that had appeared on the map. It was a bizarre journey, to be sure – and will continue to be, should we venture that way again. That, at least, seems to be a guarantee.

Kindergartners at Seaford Manor and Harbor elementary schools were all smiles as they celebrated a milestone in the school calendar - the 100th day of school. The occasion was marked with various activities that spanned across the
curriculum to reinforce students’ understanding of the number. At the Manor School, students and staff participated in the school tradition of dressing as centenarians and parading around the school for other classes to see. The students

then traveled between three kindergarten classrooms to partake in some handson activities. In one classroom, they engaged in counting and math activities and practiced writing the number 100. In another classroom, they strengthened English
language arts skills by reading a book about the 100th day of school and writing about what they would do with $100. In the third room, the students got creative by making 100th day crowns and bookmarks. Leading up to the big day, students created their own 100th day posters that were decorated with 100 items of their choice, such as gumballs, hearts, feathers or marshmallows. The posters lined the hallways for the celebration. At the Harbor School, students wearing different color Seaford Harbor Elementary School T-shirts and 100th day crowns celebrated by singing and signing number-themed songs, making beaded necklaces by counting and stringing 100 neon plastic beads, and participating in in-class math and ELA MARKING A MILESTONE - Seaford Harbor Elementary School kindergartners in activities centered on the number. Donna Butler’s class make necklaces by counting and stringing 100 neon beads.
