The Charity of The Month for February is: Girls on the Run of Long Island www.gotrlongisland.org Girls on the Run is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. They run a physical activity-based positive youth development program that is designed to enhance girls’ social, psychological and physical skills and behaviors to help them successfully navigate life experiences.

This organization also runs a program called Heart & Sole.

This is their middle school program that meets the unique needs of girls in 6th-8th grade.

Heart & Sole takes girls as a whole into consideration body, brain, heart, spirit and social connection - in a positive and structured space, where participants can learn about themselves, explore new ideas, cultivate empathy and stregthen connections. Running is incorporated into each lesson to encourage physical wellness.

These girls also prepare for a celebratory 5K event at the end of the program.

Too Much Sleep Can Be Harmful Lack of sufficient sleep is a problem for millions of people across the globe. But what about too much sleep? Though busy men and women might think it’s impossible to get too much sleep, excessive sleep is nothing to joke about.

According to the National Sleep Foundation, most adults need between seven and nine hours of sleep per night (the NSF notes that a small percentage of people may need 10 hours of sleep per night).

People who routinely sleep more than seven to nine hours may have an underlying health concern. For example, the NSF notes that a recent study found that routinely sleeping more than 10 hours per night can be linked to metabolic syndrome. The Mayo Clinic says metabolic syndrome refers to a cluster of conditions that occur together and increase a person’s risk for serious health issues, including heart disease, stroke and type 2 diabetes.

Obesity, headache and back pain are some

additional potential side effects of excessive sleep.

The Division of Sleep Medicine at Harvard Medical School notes that genetics and age are significant factors in determining the amount of sleep healthy individuals need.

However, young adults should resist the notion that they need less than seven hours of sleep per night because they’re young, while older adults should similarly avoid thinking that they need more sleep simply because they’re aging. As the NSF guidelines suggest, the sweet spot for healthy adults is typically between seven and nine hours of sleep per night.

A good night’s rest is an essential component of a healthy lifestyle. But adults must recognize that excessive amounts of sleep can be just as detrimental as inadequate sleep. debate a series a “bills” in their committee. The format of a committee meeting mimics an actual Congressional debate and students follow Robert’s Rules of Order.

Danielle and Julia said that the purpose of the debates isn’t to win, but rather to come together to discuss important issues, hear different perspectives and learn from each other.

They explained that one of the “unwritten rules” of Model Congress is that it’s OK to disagree with someone, but should be done respectfully.

“I like the concept of talking to so many different people and listening to what they have to say,” Danielle said.

Julia enjoys having a forum to bond with people from many different backgrounds and hearing their stories, adding, “It gives everyone a platform to say who they are and what they believe.”

The World Health Organization says that doctors diagnose nearly 10 million new cases of dementia each year. With so many people understandably concerned about any and all cognitive issues related to aging, the search is continually on to find ways to strengthen the mind’s muscle. It may be as simple as picking up a book.

According to the online health and wellness resource The Healthy (www. thehealthy.com), reading has been associated with language reception in the left temporal cortex of the brain. When this part of the brain processes written material, neurons begin working hard to transmit information. Research conducted by Stanford University indicated that MRI scans of people who are deep into a Jane Austen novel showed an increase in blood flowing to areas of the brain that control both cognitive

and executive function.

When the brain is working efficiently, it may be less prone to some of the issues that can cause a decline in memory and brain function. Research published in the journal Neurology found frequent brain exercise through reading lowered mental decline by 32 percent.

Of course, the benefits of reading extend beyond the physical.

Literary fiction can help people be more empathetic. Getting lost in a book and the characters’ stories makes others more relatable.

Reading has the potential to help a person understand what people are thinking, offers research published in the journal Science.

Registration For Spring Co-Ed Fitness Classes Oyster Bay Town Councilman Lou Imbroto invites residents interested in maintaining or improving their levels of fitness to participate in the Town of Oyster Bay’s Fitness Classes, which return beginning Saturday, April 4th, in the Town of Oyster Bay’s Hicksville Athletic Center.

Spring fitness classes are co-ed, open to individuals 18 years of age or older, and run for 10 weeks.

Councilman Imbroto stated, “Cardio Kick-Boxing, Pilates, Ballroom Dancing, Yoga, and Zumba are all very popular programs that provide our residents an outlet to enjoy exercising and staying in shape, all while meeting new people.

I encourage those looking for a terrific form of aerobic exercise that will help builds strength and flexibility to come out and sign up for a 10-week fitness program, beginning on March 9th. “ Registration for the three programs will take place at the Hicksville Athletic Center, 167 Broadway in Hicksville on: Monday, March 9th from 5pm to 10pm; Tuesday, March 10th from 5pm to 9:30pm; and on Thursday, March 12th from 5pm to 9:30pm. After these dates, registration will continue based on availability. Manor Students Are Mindful About Reading Seaford Manor Elementary School students are combining their love of reading with mindful practices for the annual Pick a Reading Partner program. At the opening assembly on Jan. 27, physical education teacher Dianne Dunn led students in yoga exercises for Mindful Monday.

The three-week PARP program is presented in partnership with the PTA and this year’s theme is “Just Read.” The focus is on reading enjoyment, and children are encouraged to read as much as possible

from books they enjoy, whether they come from their personal collections, the school or public library, or from a friend.

During PARP, the school is highlighting author Susan Verde, who in addition to writing books for children, teaches mindfulness and yoga. Each special subject teacher at Manor is spotlighting one of her books. Students will hear “Hey Wall” in art, “I Am Peace” in library, “I Am Yoga” and “My Kicks” in physical education and “I Am Human” in band, among others. Principal
