Steven Van Zandt’s TeachRock School Curriculum
To Expand In New York Through Partnership
With Long Island Music And Entertainment Hall Of Fame
The Long Island Music and Entertainment Hall of Fame (LIMEHoF) recently announced a partnership with rock and roll legend Steven Van Zandt’s TeachRock organization. In recognition for his work to promote music education on Long Island, Van Zandt was presented with LIMEHoF’s Harry Chapin Award in 2016.
“TeachRock aligns perfectly with LIMEHoF’s educational commitment to education and encouraging more music, arts, and culture being taught in local school districts,” said Tom Needham, LIMEHoF’s Educational Programs Director.
“Our shared goal is to encourage more Long Island, Brooklyn and Queens school districts to adopt the TeachRock curriculum and lesson plans for the cultural enrichment of its students.”
“We know that if you want a kid to succeed, you don’t tell her to take her earbuds out,” said TeachRock founder Steven Van Zandt. “You ask her what she’s listening to, and then you trace it back together. Kids come to us with the natural gift of curiosity, and the TeachRock curriculum helps teachers meet them there on the way to meaningful learning.”
Launched in 2002 by Van Zandt and the Founders Board of Bono, Jackson Browne, Martin Scorsese, and Bruce Springsteen, TeachRock.org provides free, standards-aligned resources that use music to help K-12 students succeed in science, math, social studies, and language arts, among other subjects.
TeachRock improves students’ lives by filling every classroom with the sound, stories, and
science of music. Nearly 60,000 educators— representing all 50 states—are registered at Teachrock.org.
One example of how TeachRock has been successfully incorporated on Long Island is in the Freeport School District. Stephanie Arnell, a Freeportbased teacher, has been using TeachRock with her students for years, and she’s now leading professional development sessions with teachers throughout her district.
“Personally, I think every teacher should be using the TeachRock curriculum, and we have found that our Freeport students in all grades LOVE the content,” Arnell said.
LIMEHoF also plans to promote the TeachRock curriculum throughout the Long Island, Brooklyn, and Queens school districts
in a variety of ways. Promotion strategies include the deployment of a LIMEHoF monthly email blast/web, as well as posting a monthly webpage news blast to highlight different TeachRock lessons for each month. Starting in the fall of 2023, LIMEHoF plans to host TeachRock teacher training sessions at its recently opened home base location in Stony Brook village. There is hope that participating schools will be encouraged to visit LIMEHoF via class field trips.
Teachers interested in learning more about the training and in signing up for the newsletters can visit https://www. limusichalloffame.org/ teachrock/ or email info@limusichalloffame. org
“We hear so much about declining participation and engagement, and how
that results in lower math and reading scores,” said Bill Carbone, Executive Director at TeachRock. “But nearly everywhere a TeachRock class is implemented we see the opposite: Engagement and grades are rising, and often the school ends up adding additional TeachRock courses to meet student demand. It’s a paradigm shift: Students aren’t cutting class; they’re clamoring to get in!”

The Seaford/Wantagh delegation hosted a Model Congress convention on Jan. 21 at Seaford High School, featuring about 170 students from high schools on Long Island and Westchester County. Every event has a spirit theme, and this year’s was “road trip,” with members of each team encouraged to dress up to represent a different city.
Students could participate in committee debates on topics relating to entertainment, philosophy and ethics, pop culture, teen issues and more. There were serious topics like, “Is veganism truly environmentally conscious?” And some were more lighthearted, like “What would happen if you gave a Victorian child an iPad?”
“It’s the basic structure of our Congress, where people meet in committees to discuss different issues,” General Chair Paige Burch said.
Just like the federal government, there were full meetings of the House and Senate for
Troy Tyznar, Seaford’s agenda chair, was in charge of coming up with the House bills to vote on, in consultation with the committee chairs. These were created in advance of the event.
“I love being able to debate about topics that I really like,” Troy said. “I also love that I’m able to ask questions of people’s opinions.”
Other officers from Seaford include Associate General Chair Gabrielle Bellamore, Delegate Chair Samantha Ferrara and Financial Chair Mary Saporito.
There are team and individual awards at the Model Congress conventions. Every delegation hosts one event per school year and the Seaford/ Wantagh team was placed first at Long Beach High School.
Students say that being part of Model Congress helps them learn the art of debate in a fun and friendly place. The conventions, they noted, have a family atmosphere and are a safe space to explore their own beliefs and broaden their world views and perspectives.
“You can hear everyone else’s opinions,” Mary said. “It helps you to have an open mind.”

The Charity of the Month for February is The Corporate Source
Do you know who cleans and maintains many Long Island Courts?
A major vocation for people with disabilities is cleaning, maintenance, janitorial, landscaping and snow removal work. The Corporate Source (TCS) is a Garden City-based non profit organization, which has vendor contract relationships to provide cleaning and maintenance for many of Long Island’s courthouse facilities.
As one example, the Su olk County Court Complex in Central Islip averages visits from more than 1000 people a day, whether it is judges, employees, lawyers, plainti s or defendants. Many of these visitors would not know that this 28 acre campus is cleaned and maintained in large measure by people with disabilities from The Corporate Source. In recognized annual surveys these workers are ranked “well into the ninety percentile”, performing above industry standard.
As a logical progression, in 2000 as construction and development of the D’Amato Federal Court House was completed, the Federal government awarded a janitorial contract to The Corporate Source. By 2003, they were so confident in the work of The Corporate Source that the contract evolved into Total Facilities Management including maintenance, landscaping and snow removal. More than 30 TCS employees work alongside a variety of federal employees, including 16 federal judges. Judges have been so impressed by their work that they held a lunch for these employees to express their appreciation for their commitment and outstanding performance. Michael Kramer, CEO of The Corporate Source, said “Our workers earned credibility for this enlarged opportunity. They proved that they could deliver when given a chance to do a job.”
Mr. Kramer mentioned that often cleaning, maintenance and janitorial tasks are perceived as “jobs of last resort” marked by high turnover and
Neighbor Pets’ Place
a casual attitude. In contrast he said, “The workers provided by
The Corporate Source are motivated when they are given these jobs. Sometimes this is their first position so they have a desire to prove what they can do. Among the 60+ TCS employees at the court complexes in Su olk, some have been employed since TCS first got the contract more than 20 years ago. The retention rate is well above the industry average and many employees are working there multiple years.”
TCS employees appreciate the stability that comes from work. Matt is a Heavy Equipment Mechanic at the D’Amato Federal Courthouse and over the past 23 years has worked his way up through the ranks of Janitor, to Project Worker and after taking additional training at BOCES, moved into his current role as a Mechanic. Matt is thankful for the support of his managers and supervisors who motivated and encouraged him to learn new skills and expand his role. He is grateful that work has given him the ability to provide for his wife and young children.
Richard, a TCS employee since 2017, reentered the workforce as a Janitor in the Su olk County Courthouse. Work not only helps him pay his bills and save for a new car, but also gives him a sense of pride and community. Richard is glad to complete his routine tasks and jump in when additional help is needed. “The people here are the best part of my job” said Richard. “Everyone is nice and I was really glad I got this opportunity to work for TCS.” His manager regularly hears compliments about his work and positive attitude.

Reports from the World Trade Center Health program indicate that we are approaching a terrible milestone, in which approximately 43,000 people are being treated for medical problems and 10,000 people have suffered cancers linked to the toxic exposure at Ground Zero. More than 2,500 responders and others affected have succumbed to their illness.
Supervisor Saladino stated, “We remember and give thanks to those who ran into danger in order to help the victims of a cowardly act of terror. This includes first responders, downtown workers, residents, students and so many others with cancer certified to be 9/11-related. various games, themed days, water fun, scavenger hunts and so much more,” said Supervisor Saladino.
“To help streamline the registration process this year, residents will be able to sign-up their children online this spring, and can begin pre-registration today!”
All registrations for Summer Recreation will performed online this year. In an effort to simplify the process, the Town’s Parks Department is now accepting all necessary documentation, including proof of residency, child’s birth certificates, recent physicals etc. to be uploaded to a portal on the Town’s website prior to the final registration period this spring. This process is mandatory and ends on March 15th. Once all documentation is properly uploaded, parents/guardians
will receive notification of approval to register, as well as directions for online registration.
How to upload materials (note: pre-registration does not guarantee a spot in this year’s Summer Recreation Program. Parents will need to perform final registration this spring)
• Parents/guardians can visit www.oysterbaytown. com/parksportal
• Select ‘My Account’ on the top right corner and login or create a new account (if your child was registered for the 2022 Summer Program, you already have an account, however documents must be uploaded)
• After logging in, select ‘My Account,’ then Household & Member. Confirm all family members are listed. If needed, select ‘Add Family member’ at bottom of page and add a child or guardian to the
household. Then SAVE
• Select DOCUMENT UPLOAD from the portal menu. Each document must be uploaded as a separate file (make sure all scanned documents are legible)
o Required documents:
o Proof of residency (tax or utility bill)
o Child’s Birth Certificate
o Child’s Immunization Records (for full-day campers only)
o Child’s recent physical (for full-day campers only)
Additional information, assistance and instructions are available by visiting the Town’s website at www.oysterbaytown.com/ summerrecreation or by calling the Recreation Office at (516) 797-7945.
“We know many of our youngsters can’t wait for the warm weather and all the fun they have at the Town’s Summer Recreation Program,” said Councilwoman Walsh. “With full-day options again available at Marjorie Post Park in Massapequa, PlainviewOld Bethpage Community Park and Syosset-Woodbury Community Park, as well as our traditional programs at Ellsworth Allen Park in Farmingdale, Harry Tappen Beach in Glen Head and Theodore Roosevelt Memorial Park in Oyster Bay, we look forward to another successful summer of fun!”
The mandatory preregistration period, during
which interested parents/ guardians can upload documents and required materials for registration, is open now through March 15th. Submission of materials does not guarantee a spot in the 2023 program – parents must complete their registration this spring when final registration opens. Parents will receive an email from the Recreation Division confirming that all documents have been received, as well as directions on how to complete registration. All registration will take place online. For more information, visit www.oysterbaytown.com/ summerrecreation or call the Town’s Recreation Office at (516) 797-7945.

Local Foundation, Big Mission
The Chloe Belle Foundation is a local non-profit organization started by the family of Chloe. Chloe was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia at the age of 25. She underwent countless treatments, but unfortunately the cancer only progressed. It eventually invaded her spine and left her paralyzed and in immense pain. Thirteen months later, Chloe passed away at home beside her family.
Chloe left a huge impact on those around her, she prioritized the happiness of others and brought joy wherever she went. The Lindberg Family started this foundation as a way to honor Chloe and continue her work here on earth. The mission of the Chloe Belle Foundation is to support children and young adults who have also been diagnosed with cancer, and offer them the same joy and light that Chloe herself was.
Remi Lindberg, President of The Chloe Belle Foundation said, “We have big goals for the foundation. I want Chloe to live on forever. She deserves
that. Most importantly, I want to bring Chloe’s kindness and love to the world on a large scale.”
The Chloe Belle Foundation will begin selling merchandise starting this February to benefit the foundation. They also will be hosting their annual toy drive in the spring, and will have more information on the event soon.
They will be collaborating with Mario’s Pizzeria in East Northport on February 21, 2023. When customers order on that day and mention The Chloe Belle Foundation, their foundation will receive 20% from the pre-tax sale.
To keep up with The Chloe Belle Foundation or to donate please visit their website at https:// thechloebellefoundation.org or follow them on Instagram @ thechloebellefoundation.
