Snow Days & Days Gone By By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Ah, snow days. Time was, they were a rare occasion to be looked forward to, an excuse to be carefree and cozy and free of all obligation. No more. Now, they are fraught with angst over the prospect of shoveling out, navigating the treacherous roadways and – somehow – making up for the time lost, whether at work, school or elsewhere. Oh, to be a child again… Speaking of the younger generation, as I was moving mound after mound of heavy, wet snow to the curbside in my apartment complex this past week, one of my neighbors remarked how “back in the day” it was common to see the local middle and high school boys clamoring to shovel out their neighbors’ driveways, usually for a quite reasonable sum. They made a few extra dollars, the elderly and infirmed were spared the agony of backbreaking labor, and all was well with the world.

“Nowadays,” he said, “you’ll be lucky to get them to look up from their phone for a minute.” Which brings me to my next point – when, exactly, did it become a requirement for every child from the age of four on up to have their own cell phone? I understand the practical purposes it serves in case of emergencies and all; but you can’t tell me that sending a child to school with a phone is not a distraction waiting to happen. Back in my day (all 17 years ago) we brought quarters for the pay phone. And, if by chance we were low on change, we asked to go to the Main Office, where they were more than happy to let us call home for a ride. My, how times have changed. It’s funny how we tend to lose the perspective of exactly how much time has elapsed between certain milestones in life. When someone says “ten years ago,” I immediately assume they’re referring to the 1990’s, when in fact that decade is now ancient history by comparison. It seems

that once the new millennium began, all relatable historical markers were left in the past, and with them some of the most vivid memories of days gone by. How innocent those days seem now, by comparison. Of course, the passing years have brought with them many wonderful innovations and improvements; but we seemed to manage just fine at the time, before it even occurred to our imaginations to dream such concepts. We may not have had cell phones back in school, but we knew how to make snow angels and snowmen, and we knew how to enjoy an unexpected day off much better than our adult selves seem to now. And with that, my shoveling – and my work – is done for the day. It’s on to baking chocolate chip cookies and sipping hot cocoa while catching up on some reading for me. Who says a little nostalgia isn’t good for the soul? Happy Winter to all.

The Purchaser acknowledges that the tax lien(s) sold pursuant to these Terms of Sale may be subject to pending bankruptcy proceedings and/or may become subject to such proceedings which may be commenced during the period in which a tax lien is held by a successful bidder or the assignee of same, which may modify a Purchaser’s rights with respect to the lien(s) and the property securing same. Such bankruptcy proceedings shall not affect the validity of the tax lien. In addition to being subject to pending bankruptcy proceedings and/or the Federal and State Soldiers’ and Sailors’ Civil Relief Acts, said purchaser’s right of foreclosure may be affected by the Financial Institutions Reform, Recovery and Enforcement Act(FIRREA),12 U.S.C. ss 1811 et.seq., with regard to real property under Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation(FDIC) receivership. The County Treasurer reserves the right, without further notice and at any time, to withdraw from sale any of the parcels of land or premises herein listed. The Nassau County Treasurer reserves the right to intervene in any bankruptcy case/litigation where the property affected by the tax liens sold by the Treasurer is part of the bankruptcy estate. However,it is the sole responsibility of all tax lien purchasers to protect their legal interests in any bankruptcy case affecting their purchased tax lien, including but not limited to the filing of a proof of claim on their behalf, covering their investment in said tax lien. Seaford Harbor Elementary School fifth-grader Theodore McComiskey showed just how much he knows about the locations of places around the globe when he was crowned the winner of the school-wide round of the National Geographic Bee. The honor provides him the opportunity to qualify for the state level and, if successful, advance to the national level. The bee, coordinated by Assistant Principal Caroline Schozer, was the first of its kind to be held at Harbor School. Fourth-

and fifth-grade students participated. Class winners who competed in the final round consisted of Molly Donner, Kyle O’Hagan, Jeffery Ren, Jason Berthel, Christina Necco, Kevin McCarthy, Ashley Diaz and Raymond Judge. “We congratulate Theodore and all the students who participated in the event,” said Schozer. “This was a great opportunity for our students to develop their skills and interest in geography while building confidence.”

Seaford Harbor Elementary School third graders marked the Chinese New Year and enhanced their learning of Chinese culture with an assembly featuring traditional folk dances performed by members of the Chinese Center of Long Island. Alanna Chan, a 2009 Seaford High School graduate, performed the Jasmine Flower Dance, which was done with a fabric fan to represent beauty and grace. Her younger sister, Cailin Chan, a senior at Seaford High School, and dance partner Catherine Dart performed the Handkerchief Dance, done with spinning red octagonal handkerchiefs. The dancers were introduced by Alanna and Cailin’s father, Ted,

who greeted students by saying “Happy New Year” in Chinese. He also gave students a brief explanation of the Chinese New Year. “The Chinese New Year represents new beginnings and celebrations,” Chan said. “Red and gold colors are good luck in Chinese culture. One of the most famous dances performed on the Chinese New Year is the Lion Dance, which is done to cast away evil spirits known to prevent one from having a prosperous new year.” Chan also talked about the dancers’ training, which begins when they are very young, and opened the floor for questions from the students. Students inquired if boys perform the dances, how many dances do they learn and what is worn when they

dance. After the assembly, students - dressed in red and holding dragon masks and traditional noisemakers that they made in their classroom participated in a traditional Chinese New Year parade aimed to “wake up the dragon that brings spring.” According to third grade COMPLIMENTS TO ALL - Seaford Manor Elementary School fifth-graders write teacher Nanci Prefer, compliments for their peers under the guidance of speech teacher Jean Marie Bondi, students are continuing left, and social worker Jennifer DiMieri. their study of countries around the world by looking at customs and traditions of different cultures. “Students have been immersed in crosscurricular activities using fiction and non-fiction resources,” she said. “The overreaching objective is looking at cultures and asking, ‘How are we different and how are we the same?’”
