$23,000 a year in savings* from lighting upgrades means more of this for Long Island.
For rebate information, visit PSEGLINY.com/Business
When the nonprofit Canine Companions requested a free energy assessment, we discovered that installing LED fixtures and other energy efficiency measures could save them nearly $2,000 a month. And with available PSEG Long Island rebates, the installation was affordable. Today, those changes have meant more funds for the mission of providing service dogs to Long Islanders with disabilities. And that means a better Long Island for us all. *Actual

Such tax liens will be sold at the lowest rate of interest, not exceeding 10 percent per six month’s period, for which any person or persons shall offer to take the total amount of such unpaid taxes as defined in section 5-37.0 of the Nassau County Administrative Code. Effective with the February 21, 2023 lien sale, Ordinance No. 175-2015 requires a $175.00 per day registration fee for each person who intends to bid at the tax lien sale. Ordinance No. 175-2015 also requires that upon the issuance of the Lien Certificate there is due from the lien buyer a Tax Certificate Issue Fee of $20.00 per lien purchased.
Pursuant to the provisions of the Nassau County Administrative Code at the discretion of the Nassau County Treasurer the auction will be conducted online. Further information concerning the procedures for the auction is available at the website of the Nassau County Treasurer at: https://www.nassaucountyny.gov/526/County-Treasurer
Should the Treasurer determine that an in-person auction shall be held, same will commence on the 21st day of February, 2023 at the Office of The County Treasurer 1 West Street, Mineola or at some other location to be determined by the Treasurer.

TERMS OF SALE
Such tax liens shall be sold subject to any and all superior tax liens of sovereignties and other municipalities and to all claims of record which the County may have thereon and subject to the provisions of the Federal and State Soldier’s and Sailors’ Civil Relief Acts.
However, such tax liens shall have priority over the County’s Differential Interest Lien, representing the excess, if any, of the interest and penalty borne at the maximum rate over the interest and penalty borne at the rate at which the lien is purchased.
The Purchaser acknowledges that the tax lien(s) sold pursuant to these Terms of Sale may be subject to pending bankruptcy proceedings and/or may become subject to such proceedings which may be commenced during the period in which a lien is held by a successful bidder or the assignee of same, which may modify a Purchaser’s rights with respect to the lien(s) the property securing same. Such bankruptcy proceedings shall not affect the validity of the tax lien. In addition to being subject to pending bankruptcy proceedings and/or the Federal and State Soldiers’ and Sailors’ Civil Relief Acts, said purchaser’s right of foreclosure may be affected by the Financial Institutions Reform, Recovery and Enforcement Act (FIRREA), 12 U.S.C. ss 1811 et. seq., with regard to real property under Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) receivership.
The County Treasurer reserves the right, without further notice and at any time, to withdraw from sale any of the parcels of land or premises herein listed.
The rate of interest and penalty which any person purchases the tax lien shall be established by his bid. Each purchaser, immediately after the sale thereof, shall pay to the County Treasurer ten per cent of the amount from which the tax liens have been sold and the remaining ninety per cent within thirty days after such sale. If the purchaser at the tax sale shall fail to pay the remaining ninety per cent within ten days after he has been notified by the County Treasurer that the certificates of sale are ready for delivery, then all deposited with the County Treasurer including but not limited to the ten per cent theretofore paid by him shall, without further notice or demand, be irrevocably forfeited by the purchaser and shall be retained by the County Treasurer as liquidated damages and the agreement to purchase be of no further effect.
Time is of the essence in this sale. This sale is held pursuant to the Nassau County Administrative Code and interested parties are referred to such Code for additional information as to terms of sale, rights of purchasers, maximum rates of interest and other legal incidents of the sale.
Furthermore, as to the bidding,
1. The bidder(s) agree that they will not work with any other bidder(s) to increase, maintain or stabilize interest rates or collaborate with any other bidder(s) to gain an unfair competitive advantage in the random number generator in the event of a tie bid(s) on a tax certificate. Bidder(s) further agree not to employ any bidding strategy designed to create an unfair competitive advantage in the tiebreaking process in the upcoming tax sale nor work with any other bidder(s) to engage in any bidding

The Charity of the Month for February is The Corporate Source
www.thecorporatesource.org
Based in Garden City, observing 27 years of service, The Corporate Source (TCS) has a presence throughout the Greater New York Metro Region, along with the U.S. Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico. They create value for individuals with disabilities by providing well paying jobs along with the necessary training, job coaching and support to be successful in the workplace. TCS creates value to companies and organizations by providing important outsourcing services and by increasing diversity at these sites.
With nearly 400 employees, this organization provides services such as janitorial, maintenance, call center services, mail room and courier, and kennel services to federal, state and public organizations. Recently, TCS moved into another area o ering tremendous growth potential for individuals with disabilities - Information Technology (IT).
The Bureau of Labor Statistics has projected a 12 percent growth rate in the IT field between 2018 and 2028, which is much faster than the average for all occupations. In December 2022, employers across the United States listed over 18,000 open positions for IT support specialists, according to CompTIA’s monthly “Tech Jobs Report.” This expressed demand on the part of potential employers is echoed by the disability community, which has expressed tremendous interest in the IT sector.
TCS has partnered in a key initiative with CompTIA to train and certify people with disabilities for lucrative positions in the IT field. The “TCS IT Training and A+ Certification Program” is a comprehensive 13 week program with instruction provided virtually with individualized support for program participants that is provided by TCS’ Vocational Rehabilitation unit. The structure of the training is adapted to meet the needs and learning
styles of the participants. At the conclusion of the virtual classroom, instruction students will have the opportunity to earn two professional certifications – CompTIA IT Fundamentals, an introduction to basic IT knowledge and skills, and CompTIA A+, the industry standard for establishing a career in IT. The objective is to teach marketable IT skills, along with appropriate work behaviors, to ensure that graduates will be qualified for jobs such as: help desk technicians, desktop support people and field technicians who assist with hardware and equipment setup.
At their 2022 Long Island SummIT Awards Dinner, The Long Island Software & Technology Network recognized TCS for its innovative e orts and leadership to recruit people with disabilities to fulfill IT sector jobs.
On February 28, 2023, the second class coming through the TCS IT Training & Certification Program will be graduating. These graduates who are mainly from Nassau and Su olk counties are eager to begin their careers!
One of the initial graduates, Ayisat, expressed that she was thrilled to take advantage of this opportunity to further her career. She had been working for TCS as a Telephone Operator for the Veterans Administration Hospital in Manhattan when she was approached by her manager about the opportunity to participate in the IT Training Program. After successfully completing the program and obtaining her certifications, Ayisat secured a job as a Help Desk Technician. She is now working remotely and excited about her career potential.
Do you know of a company that would benefit by hiring one of their IT Program graduates? Would you like to learn more about this program? Please contact Ruth-Ann Gater at Ruth-Ann. Gater@thecorporatesource.org if so and stay tuned for next week’s article to learn more about TCS.
If your nonprofit would like to be featured in this column, please call Noelle Lambert at 631.226.2636 x225 for consideration.

Saladino, Lamarca Invite Couples
To Free Valentine’s Day
Vow Renewal Special Event To Feature Reenactment Of America’s First Valentine
Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and Town Clerk Richard LaMarca invite residents to renew their wedding vows at a special ceremony on Valentine’s Day, Tuesday, February 14th, at Oyster Bay Town Hall. Co-sponsored by Raynham Hall Museum, the event will include a reading of America’s First Valentine, which was written on February 14, 1779 in Oyster Bay. The special ceremony will take place at 11 a.m. and will include light refreshments for all guests.
“Valentine’s Day is the most romantic day of the year, and many couples celebrate their wedding anniversaries on this special day. We look forward to making this special day even
better as couples renew their marriage vows and declare their endless love for one another,” said Supervisor Saladino.
“Couples often select Valentine’s Day to celebrate their relationship,” added Town Clerk LaMarca. “It may be a sentimental choice for couples who had their first date, first kiss, or even engagement on Valentine’s Day. Whatever the reason, we are proud to offer this special vow renewal ceremony at Town Hall.”
The ceremony will take place at Oyster Bay Town Hall, 54 Audrey Avenue in Oyster Bay hamlet. The event is offered free of charge to Town residents but reservations are required.
Residents interested in
renewing their wedding vows should RSVP to (516) 624-6380.
The story of America’s first Valentine is a proud piece of Oyster Bay history which dates back to the time of the Revolutionary War, as British troops occupied Long Island homes. During the height of the American Revolutionary War, love improbably blossomed between Lt. Col Simcoe and a young patriot named Sally Townsend as the Townsend property served as a headquarters for a regiment of 300 British troops. Lt. Col. Simcoe presented Sally with a poem he wrote asking her to be his Valentine, and his famous poem, entitled ‘Will You Be My Valentine,’ became the first documented written Valentine in America.

Making Cultural Connections
International Week, a longstanding tradition at Seaford Manor Elementary School, brings knowledge of other cultures and creates a sense of pride among students in their own heritage. This year, the worldly festival was celebrated from Jan. 9 to 13. Guest speakers, including parents, grandparents and other relatives of students, visited classrooms throughout the week to talk about the countries their families hail from. They covered almost every continent, sharing information about Argentina, Cuba, Italy, Pakistan, Zimbabwe and nearly dozen other countries. Many guests brought in
artifacts such as photos and pieces of clothing.
Students celebrated their own heritage by making family crests. Each child shared information about a country their ancestors are from, including food, landmarks and traditions, as well as a depiction of the flag. The crests lined the hallways to show the many nations that are represented at Manor.
There were also International Week lessons in special area classes. Music teacher Richard Adams taught students a Swedish dance and art teacher
Marissa Kunz discussed the meaning of blue in countries around the world, then had students create projects only
using the color. In physical education, students played European handball, but first practiced throwing and catching before getting into game play.
Assistant Principal Dr. Mary-Ellen Kakalos said students and staff look forward to International Week every year. Each day started with trivia during the morning announcements.
“We value the rich history, culture and traditions from our families throughout the whole year,” Dr. Kakalos said, “but International Week is a special time where we can highlight them and learn more about countries from all over the world.”
Town Awards $1 Million In Grants To Small Businesses; Encourages More To Apply
Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino joined with Councilwoman Michele Johnson, Councilwoman Vicki Walsh, Town Clerk Rich LaMarca and Receiver of Taxes Jeff Pravato to officially award the first $1 million dollars of grant monies available to local businesses and not for profits through the Oyster Bay Forward Program. Oyster Bay Forward offers up to $5,000 to small businesses and non-profits finally impacted by the COVID pandemic, with a total of $4.5 million available.
“After a year-plus long pandemic and now facing an economic recession, small businesses need help and we’re pleased to offer these Federal funds to boost small business owners and not for profits,” said Supervisor Saladino. “There is still funding available, and we encourage all business owners and non-profits to apply for funding to help them recover losses from the pandemic and keep their operations moving
forward in the Town of Oyster Bay.”
The ‘Oyster Bay Forward’ Grant Program is open to businesses that employ up to 50 full-time equivalent W-2 employees as well as sole proprietors. Additional eligibility criteria:
o Applicant must be the principal (i.e. majority owner);
o Entity must be a forprofit business, or 501c3 or 501c19 non-profit organization, with annual revenue between $35,000 and $5 million;
o At least 60 percent of non-profit expenses must have been programmatic in 2019;
o Applicant must be in operation at the time of application and have been in operation prior to January 1, 2021;
o Must have fewer than 50 full-time equivalent W-2 employees;
o Certification and demonstration of economic hardship due to pandemic; and
o Not be in default or arrears on past or current federal and state financing or funding programs.
“Grant monies can be utilized for a variety of purposes, including expenses that helped mitigate hardships caused by the pandemic,” said Councilwoman Vicki Walsh. “These could include the purchase of inventory and supplies, rent payments, utilities, property taxes, lease or purchase of equipment, as well as operating and emergency maintenance. We encourage all businesses and non-profits to sign up today.” Applications are processed through the National Development Council (NDC) – who was retained by the Town to administer the Oyster Bay Forward Grant Program. Additional eligibility criteria, including required documents, as well as applications for eligible business and non-profit organizations are available at TOBForward.com, where interested parties can also view an informative webinar further detailing the application process.

Hometown Heroes Recognition Applications Now Available
Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and Councilman
Steve Labriola announced that the Town is now accepting applications for the 2023 Hometown Heroes’ Community Recognition Program. This initiative recognizes the service and sacrifice of the brave men and women of
the United States Armed Forces – both living and deceased – who are current or former Town of Oyster Bay residents.
“My Town Board colleagues and I were amazed by the outpouring of support this program has received from residents, businesses and local heroes,” said
$6,195!
Councilman Labriola.
“We are proud to return this important initiative to our communities and look forward to further recognizing our veterans, active duty service members, and their families for their commitment to defend our freedoms and democracy.”
Banners bearing the nominated individual’s name, rank, photograph and area of service will be unveiled throughout selected park facilities across the Town of Oyster Bay in the months leading up to Veterans Day in November. Any interested individual or organization who would wish to sponsor a banner can remit $75 to sponsor the production of a banner. No profit is made from this program. Once the banners are displayed, the Town will maintain the banners, and will remain on display until Veterans Day, where they will then be taken down to avoid any inclement winter weather and returned to the service family or their loved ones. Those who sponsored a banner last year are reminded to submit a new application in order to be included in the 2023 season. Applications must be received by March 10, 2023.
Supervisor Saladino added, “This is an especially meaningful way to honor those who bravely and selflessly served our nation. Together as a community we will honor the brave men and women of the United States Armed Forces who sacrificed a great deal for our nation, as well as many local veterans who continue to serve our community and their fellow veterans through advocacy efforts.”

Steven Van Zandt’s TeachRock School Curriculum
To Expand In New York Through Partnership
With Long Island Music And Entertainment Hall Of Fame
The Long Island Music and Entertainment Hall of Fame (LIMEHoF) recently announced a partnership with rock and roll legend Steven Van Zandt’s TeachRock organization. In recognition for his work to promote music education on Long Island, Van Zandt was presented with LIMEHoF’s Harry Chapin Award in 2016.
“TeachRock aligns perfectly with LIMEHoF’s educational commitment to education and encouraging more music, arts, and culture being taught in local school districts,” said Tom Needham, LIMEHoF’s Educational Programs Director.
“Our shared goal is to encourage more Long Island, Brooklyn and Queens school districts to adopt the TeachRock curriculum and lesson plans for the cultural enrichment of its students.”
“We know that if you want a kid to succeed, you don’t tell her to take her earbuds out,” said TeachRock founder Steven Van Zandt. “You ask her what she’s listening to, and then you trace it back together. Kids come to us with the natural gift of curiosity, and the TeachRock curriculum helps teachers meet them there on the way to meaningful learning.”
Launched in 2002 by Van Zandt and the Founders Board of Bono, Jackson Browne, Martin Scorsese, and Bruce Springsteen, TeachRock.org provides free, standards-aligned resources that use music to help K-12 students succeed in science, math, social studies, and language arts, among other subjects.
TeachRock improves students’ lives by filling every classroom with the sound, stories, and
science of music. Nearly 60,000 educators— representing all 50 states—are registered at Teachrock.org.
One example of how TeachRock has been successfully incorporated on Long Island is in the Freeport School District. Stephanie Arnell, a Freeportbased teacher, has been using TeachRock with her students for years, and she’s now leading professional development sessions with teachers throughout her district.
“Personally, I think every teacher should be using the TeachRock curriculum, and we have found that our Freeport students in all grades LOVE the content,” Arnell said.
LIMEHoF also plans to promote the TeachRock curriculum throughout the Long Island, Brooklyn, and Queens school districts
in a variety of ways. Promotion strategies include the deployment of a LIMEHoF monthly email blast/web, as well as posting a monthly webpage news blast to highlight different TeachRock lessons for each month. Starting in the fall of 2023, LIMEHoF plans to host TeachRock teacher training sessions at its recently opened home base location in Stony Brook village. There is hope that participating schools will be encouraged to visit LIMEHoF via class field trips.
Teachers interested in learning more about the training and in signing up for the newsletters can visit https://www. limusichalloffame.org/ teachrock/ or email info@limusichalloffame. org
“We hear so much about declining participation and engagement, and how
that results in lower math and reading scores,” said Bill Carbone, Executive Director at TeachRock. “But nearly everywhere a TeachRock class is implemented we see the opposite: Engagement and grades are rising, and often the school ends up adding additional TeachRock courses to meet student demand. It’s a paradigm shift: Students aren’t cutting class; they’re clamoring to get in!”

About LIMEHoF
Founded in 2004, the Long Island and Entertainment Music Hall of Fame is a 501(c) (3) organization dedicated to the idea that Long Island’s musical heritage is an important resource to be celebrated and preserved for future generations. In 2022 it

The organization, which encompasses New York State’s Nassau, Suffolk, Queens, and Kings (Brooklyn) Counties, was created as a place of community that inspires and explores Long Island music in all its forms. To date, the organization has inducted more than 120 musicians and music industry executives, and also offers education programs and scholarships, and awards to Long Island students and educators.

Service-Minded Students
Collect Coats And More
A commitment to community service is the mission for the aptly named Service Club at Seaford Middle School, which recently concluded a successful winter clothing drive.
Students collected boots, coats, dresses, gloves, hats, pajama pants, scarves, sweatshirts and more for St. Vincent de Paul Church, which will provide them to people in need on
Long Island. They sought donations for men, women, children and teens.
The collection drive lasted for about a month. Service Club members made posters that hung throughout the school and decorated donation boxes in the lobby.
“We tried to make the poster eye catching, so kids would see them and they could donate to help people,” said Service
Club President Meridith Goldberger, an eighth grader.
Treasurer Jovie Hartmann, a sixth grader, added that the among of donations, which filled several large boxes and bags, “show that we care about the community.”
Service club advisers are Amanda Robilotto and Julia Spellman.

It’s An Explorer’s Dream At Seaford Harbor STEAM Night
Seaford Harbor
Elementary School students took a journey to outer space on Jan. 12 as they explored the world and beyond at the annual STEAM Night. Young scientists explored a variety of principles such as density, energy, force and more, while also getting creative as artists and engineers.
The all-purpose room featured space-themed stations, led by Harbor teachers and student volunteers from the middle school. Students could use sticky stars to form constellations, drop rocks
to make moon craters, build spaceships with Legos and combine water, glue and sparkles to create a galaxy in a bottle.
The art room featured a slime-making station and in the courtyard, they could launch their film canister rockets. The tops popped off from the pressure created after dropping an Alka Seltzer tablet in water.
Fifth graders from Kerry Hansen’s class showed visitors how to solve Rubik’s cubes and how to make space-themed designs with rubber bands on Geoboards. Mad
Science hosted a pair of demonstrations in the gymnasium for grades K-2 and 3-5. Students could also visit the Snapology bus, a mobile STEAM lab with various handson activities. The young scientists received folders with activities that they can do at home.
“STEAM night brings parents and children together for a fun night of learning,” Assistant Principal Caroline Stringer said. “We thank all of the teachers, staff, parents and student volunteers who helped make the event a great success.”

Supervisor Joseph Saladino joined with his partners in Nassau County government, Supervisor Jen DeSena of North Hempstead and Supervisor Don Clavin of Hempstead, to denounce an ill-conceived progressive proposal that would impact Long Island suburbs and single-family home zoning. The latest proposal by Governor Hochul –seemingly a repeat of last year’s plan to turn suburban neighborhoods into overcrowded urban centers – would result in thousands of apartments and high density housing flooding every community, as well as spot zoning in which large scale apartment buildings could pop up next to singlefamily homes.
“We must save our suburbs from this ill-conceived plan as it would overcrowd classrooms, greatly increase traffic and cars parked

“While some Albany leaders want to blame the local of affordable housing for the mass migration leaving our State, we all know the real reason people are fleeing New York is crushing taxes, rising crime and government overreach which threatens individual rights.”
The three Town Supervisors joined local neighbors to voice their concerns of how the Governor’s urbanization plan would negatively impact the environment, traffic, parking, emergency services, police protection, local utilities and schools. They also asked the public to join them in contacting state officials to demand that this proposal not be included in the Governor’s budget.

United States Air Force Thunderbirds To Headline
19th Annual Bethpage Air Show At Jones Beach Taking Place May 27-28, 2023
Bethpage Federal Credit Union, New York State’s largest credit union, and the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation, are pleased to announce that the United States Air Force Thunderbirds will headline the 19th Annual Bethpage Air Show at Jones Beach taking place on Saturday, May 27, 2023 and Sunday, May 28, 2023. This will be the demonstration team’s 9th performance at the Bethpage Air Show.
It was announced at the annual International Council of Air Shows (ICAS) Convention yesterday that the United States Army Golden Knights Parachute Team and the United States Marine Corps F35B Lighting II will be performing, along with the world famous Skytpers, Long Island’s David Windmiller and Mike Goulian, North America’s most decorated aerobatic pilot.
“Last year, we were very grateful that the Thunderbirds changed their schedule to perform for us on Memorial Day, after the Saturday and Sunday weekend shows were rained out,” said George Gorman, Regional Director, New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation. “Suffice to say, we couldn’t be happier to welcome the team back to Long Island for our 2023 show!”
“The Bethpage Air Show continues to be one of New York’s most treasured events,” said Linda Armyn, Chief Strategy & Marketing Officer, Bethpage Federal Credit Union. “After 19 years, the pilots and performers, show organizers and fans have grown to become a big family. We look forward to organizing a very special show for our fans this year.”
It was also announced that the United States Navy Blue Angels will return as headliners for the special 20th Anniversary Bethpage Air Show at Jones Beach, which will take place on Saturday, May 25, 2024 and Sunday, May 26, 2024.
Additional 2023 performers will be announced shortly.

Retiring Early
According to Gallup’s 2021 Economy and Personal Finance survey, the average individual in the United States is retiring earlier than many people might expect. Gallup found that the average retirement age was 62, which is two years earlier than the working respondents
indicated they planned to retire. Canadians are retiring a little bit later than their American counterparts, as Statistics Canada reports the average retirement age in Canada is just over 63 and a half. The average retirement age is worth noting, as studies routinely find that many
working professionals greatest concern about retiring is that they won’t have enough money saved to meet their needs. By recognizing that they may end up retiring earlier than they initially planned, professionals can make a concerted effort to save more money in the years ahead.
