Islanders Talk Teamwork At Seaford Harbor

Sparky the Dragon may have been the attraction, but the message about teamwork was the greatest takeaway for Seaford Harbor Elementary School students during a program hosted by

the New York Islanders on Jan. 18.

The Islanders School Assembly featured sessions for students in grades K-2 and 3-5. Members of the Community Relations team

fired up the students, many clad in Islanders gear or blue and orange attire.

For a teamwork demonstration, one student and one teacher were invited to the front for a race to

put on goalie equipment.

The student had help, while the teacher did not, and it was not a surprise when the student was the winner during both sessions. The youngsters were reminded

that school is a team, and they are supported by their principal, teachers and nurse, just like the Islanders have a general manager, coaches and trainers.

Another key message was

the importance of living a healthy life through a proper diet and exercise. Students explored healthy eating habits and ways to stay active such as playing team sports or going for a walk.

Seaford Boasts 25 All-County Musicians From vocalists in the chorus to instrumentalists in the band, more than two dozen student-musicians were proud to represent the Seaford School District at the annual AllCounty music festival.

Rehearsals and concerts were held during the first two weeks of January.

The All-County festival, hosted by the Nassau Music Educators Association, recognizes

students from grades 5-12. They are chosen based on their NYSSMA solo performance scores and teacher recommendations.

Mercy Soup Kitchen Seeking Volunteers

It is an exciting time at the Mercy Soup Kitchen of Wyandanch as it is preparing to launch its new and expanded post Covid operation.

Located in the basement of Trinity Lutheran Church at 17 South 20th Street, the Kitchen served its first meal to hungry people in 1980 and currently serves an average of 108 people per day.

During the pandemic, however, Kitchen procedures had to be modified in order to provide hot, nourishing meals safely and continuously to those in need.

Indoor sit-down SEAFORD HARBOR ELEMENTARY SCHOOL - Seaford Harbor Elementary dining was discontinued School All-County musicians. and only take-out dining

was available.

But today the Kitchen is posing for a postCovid reopening – a reorganizational rebirth of sorts – where Kitchen procedures can finally return to again offering guests dignified, indoor sit-down dining.

The Kitchen relies heavily on its generous volunteer support and, as such, numerous onsite and off-site volunteer opportunities are now available.

While there are openings for on-site positions, such as helping to prepare and serve meals and to perform various maintenance functions, there are also openings for diverse off-site

positions in areas such as finance, grant development and preparation, legal compliance assurance, marketing duties, social media facilitation and fund raising/donation coordination.

Only with the efforts of its volunteers can the Kitchen succeed in its mission to provide food security to those in need.

Please consider sharing some of your time and talents with the Kitchen to make this happen. We invite you to join our team.

Seaford Harbor Teacher Gets Grant For Robotics Kit

Third graders at Seaford Harbor Elementary School will soon be learning about coding while playing with one of their favorite toys.

Teacher Katherine Black was recently awarded $500 from Jovia Financial Credit Union’s “Funding Your Ideas” teacher grant program for a Lego Education Spike Prime set.

Ms. Black said that the kit, which includes Legos, motors and sensors, will allow her students to build, program and test robots.

They can work in teams of up to six students for the project-based learning

experience. As students become more proficient, they will advance to more complex challenges.

The Spike Prime set integrates hardware and software, and allows students to learn about computer programming with a user-friendly coding language. Ms. Black, after completing a computer science certification program through Stony Brook University, said she has been looking for ways to bring coding and robotics into her classroom and the Jovia grant gives her that opportunity.

“I’m excited to expand STEM education in my classroom through this Lego program and have this experience with my students,” she said.

This is the third grade Ms. Black has received through Jovia.

Past financial awards have allowed her to buy furniture for flexible seating and global awareness books. She is extremely grateful to the credit union for their financial support, allowing her to enhance the classroom experience for her students.

TERMS OF SALE Such tax liens shall be sold subject to any and all superior tax liens of sovereignties and other municipalities and to all claims of record which the County may have thereon and subject to the provisions of the Federal and State Soldier’s and Sailors’ Civil Relief Acts.

However, such tax liens shall have priority over the County’s Differential Interest Lien, representing the excess, if any, of the interest and penalty borne at the maximum rate over the interest

and penalty borne at the rate at which the lien is purchased.

The Purchaser acknowledges that the tax lien(s) sold pursuant to these Terms of Sale may be subject to pending bankruptcy proceedings and/or may become subject to such proceedings which may be commenced during the period in which a lien is held by a successful bidder or the assignee of same, which may modify a Purchaser’s rights with respect to the lien(s) the property securing same. Such bankruptcy proceedings shall not affect the validity of the tax lien. In addition to being subject to pending bankruptcy proceedings and/or the Federal and State Soldiers’ and Sailors’ Civil Relief Acts, said purchaser’s right of foreclosure may be affected by the Financial Institutions Reform, Recovery and Enforcement Act (FIRREA), 12 U.S.C. ss 1811 et. seq., with regard to real property under Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) receivership.

The County Treasurer reserves the right, without further notice and at any time, to withdraw from sale any of the parcels of land or premises herein listed.

The rate of interest and penalty which any person purchases the tax lien shall be established by his bid. Each purchaser, immediately after the sale thereof, shall pay to the County Treasurer ten per cent of the amount from which the tax liens have been sold and the remaining ninety per cent within thirty days after such sale. If the purchaser at the tax sale shall fail to pay the remaining ninety per cent within ten days after he has been notified by the County Treasurer that the certificates of sale are ready for delivery, then all deposited with the County Treasurer including but not limited to the ten per cent theretofore paid by him shall, without further notice or demand, be irrevocably forfeited by the purchaser and shall be retained by the County Treasurer as liquidated damages and the agreement to purchase be of no further effect.

Time is of the essence in this sale. This sale is held pursuant to the Nassau County Administrative Code and interested parties are referred to such Code for additional information as to terms of sale, rights of purchasers, maximum rates of interest and other legal incidents of the sale.

Furthermore, as to the bidding, 1. The bidder(s) agree that they will not work with any other bidder(s) to increase, maintain or stabilize interest rates or collaborate with any other bidder(s) to gain an unfair competitive advantage in the random number generator in the event of a tie bid(s) on a tax certificate. Bidder(s) further agree not to employ any bidding strategy designed to create an unfair competitive advantage in the tiebreaking process in the upcoming tax sale nor work with any other bidder(s) to engage in any bidding strategy that will result in a rotational award of tax certificates.

2. The tax certificate(s) the Bidder will bid upon, and the interest rate(s) bid, will be arrived at independently and without direct or indirect consultation, communication or agreement with any other bidder and that the tax certificate(s) the Bidder will bid upon, and the interest rate(s) to be bid, have not been disclosed, directly or indirectly, to any other bidder, and will not be disclosed, directly or indirectly, to any other bidder prior to the close of bidding. No attempt has been made or will be made to, directly or indirectly, induce any other bidder to refrain from bidding on any tax certificate, to submitcomplementary bids, or to submit bids at specific interest rates.

3. The bids to be placed by the Bidder will be made in good faith and not pursuant to any direct or indirect, agreement or discussion with, or inducement from, any other bidder to submit a complementary or other noncompetitive bid.

4. If it is determined that the bidder(s) have violated any of these bid requirements then their bid shall be voided and if they were the successful bidder the lien and any deposits made, in connection with, said bid shall be forfeited.

The sport known as American football was borne out of the English sports of association football (soccer) and rugby. During the late 19th century, elite Northeastern colleges took up the sport, playing a soccer-type game with rules adopted from the London

Football Association.

Intercollegiate matches began to spring up at schools such as Rutgers, Princeton, Harvard, and McGill University. Rugby-type rules became preferential among players and spectators.

Walter Camp, known affectionately as the “Father of American Football,” transformed the rugbystyle game into the one that resembles American football today. Camp brought two key innovations to the game.

The opening “scrummage” was eliminated, and a rule was introduced that required a team to give up the ball after failing to advance down the field a specific yardage.

Camp also developed the quarterback position, lines of scrimmage, and the scoring scale used in football today.

Early games were controversial because of the high rate of injury.

Roosevelt stepped in to ask collegiate teams to revise regulations to make the game less brutal. The committee overseeing the rules would later become known as the National Collegiate Athletic Association.

Thanks largely in part to the popularity of college football, professional football began to gain

traction with the public.

The American Professional Football Association was formed in 1920. That league would later become the National Football League.

The first televised NFL game occurred in 1939.

Eventually, American football’s popularity would explode.

Cheerleaders were

introduced to the game in the 1960s. Currently, the Dallas Cowboy Cheerleaders are the most famous squad.

Six teams in the NFL do not have cheerleaders: the Chicago Bears, the Cleveland Browns, the Detroit Lions, the New York Giants, the Pittsburgh Steelers, and the Green Bay Packers.

Football games typically

last around 3 hours. The average attendance for an NFL game is 66,957 spectators.

American football has become a multibillion-dollar industry. What developed on college campuses has grown into a worldwide phenomenon.

To become both stronger readers and writers, sixth graders at Seaford Middle School have been studying figurative language.

Teacher Richard Thau wanted to bring some excitement to the linguistics lesson, so that meant it was time for a competition.

Students competed one-on-one to guess the figurative language that was used in a sentence – alliteration, hyperbole, idiom, metaphor, onomatopoeia, personification, rhyme or simile. Sixth Graders Figure Out Creative Writing board, and then when the choices came up, they competed to see who could hit the correct answer first with a fly swatter. The winner got to stay in the game until a class champion was crowned.

Mr. Thau said that understanding of figurative language is very beneficial. As readers, sentences make sense when they can identify when authors use different techniques.

For their own work, it helps students liven up their writing with greater description and visualizations.
