Rally for Reading
The upcoming Olympic games serves as the inspiration for this year’s Pick A Reading Partners program at Seaford Manor Elementary School. All students came together for a PARP kickoff assembly on January 29th to get them excited about reading.
Children will be asked to read at home every day and log their minutes. All students received a copy of “Hour of the Olympics” from Mary Pope Osborne’s “Magic Tree House” series. Principal Debra Emmerich said it is a good schoolwide reading
selection because it is a book that older students can read independently and younger students can read with help from a parent or older sibling. Students will also participate in various activities over the next month including sports
jersey day, a book swap, an author visit and read with a buddy day. The three classes with the greatest reading and activity participation will receive medals. PARP began with an Olympic-style opening ceremony with a
presentation of flags from 20 different countries, a hanging of colored hulahoops to form the Olympic symbol and a carrying of the torch. Author Eleanor Turino, a retired librarian from Seaford Manor, visited classes throughout the day and spoke about
her book, “Pick Me.” Ms. Emmerich said that the more students read as youngsters, the more success they will likely have in school as they get older. The purpose of PARP, she explained, is “to teach children that reading can be enjoyable.”

Cultivating Creativity Traditional and modern art skills come together at Seaford High School in Methods of Cartoon and Comic Illustration, a popular elective course in which students can explore their creativity through a variety of mediums and assignments. Teacher Michael Kerr said that the full-year course has been offered for the past five years. Many projects start with hand drawings that are completed in pencil and pen, and scanned onto computers where digital
tools are used to take those images to the next level. Students use modern software such as Illustrator and Photoshop, and lessons on the different features of the programs are incorporated into the projects. “The students gain an appreciation for what an artist needs to do to take an idea from conception to completion,” Mr. Kerr said. “This is a course that teaches them how to do art that’s not necessarily traditional, and not always perfect. This allows their
personalities to come out.” A recent unit on satire and parody included a connection to history, with comparisons of political cartoons from the past and present. Students then created their own drawings based on the parody trading card series, Garbage Pail Kids, choosing politicians or pop culture icons as inspiration. Students create comic strips, progressing from single to multiple panels to full-page narratives in which they develop their own characters. Mr. Kerr

Senior Joe Falletta decided to take the course to expand upon the skills he learned in computer graphics and filmmaking classes. He said he likes learning how to use the programs more efficiently and acquiring skills that will help him pursue a career in the digital arts. He added that the projects are very interesting and he enjoys coming up with his own creations.

“I believe all things happen for a reason” Kevin Mann, Vice President of Hope Children’s Fund, said to me as we sat down to talk more in-depth about this international non-profit. It was not by coincidence that he and his wife crossed paths with Lawrence Hohler, retired Smithtown East HS teacher, and Joseph Kirima, primary school teacher in Kenya, to learn about what those two educators came together in hopes to form: a Kenyan orphanage. Hope Children’s Fund operates with the motto “Education Is Key” and for children in Kenya, this couldn’t be more true. Without an education and the ability to speak English, these children often lack the opportunity to rise above fetching water and cutting wood. Mann explained, “The government in Kenya doesn’t have the resources to take care of the children in their country like the United States government does.” It is not shocking to see a very young child in Kenya hopelessly wandering the streets without family, hungry and just trying to survive. Hope Children’s Fund does something about this problem. In 2001, Hope Children’s Fund registered as a nonprofit and raised $40,000 through donations – precisely enough money to begin construction on an orphanage that stands high up on a hill in Meru, Kenya. By 2005, the orphanage opened and began transforming lives for children, many of whom had lost their parents in the AIDS epidemic. This orphanage, Jerusha Mwiraria Hope Children’s Fund Home, has a dining hall and a dormitory for boys and girls. It provides the children with shelter, steady meals and the opportunity to attend school. The children are shown family values and given chores to complete in order for them to gain life skills. They currently house 100 children and have had many success stories. One of their favorites is of a young lady named Betty Gakii who entered their orphanage when she was little, did well and became a teacher, later got married and had children of her own, and now is the Administrative Assistant at this same orphanage! Kevin feels that he and his wife have received and learned much more from the orphans than they’ve given and taught them. With that being said, if you would like to help change the lives of orphans in Kenya, you can!
There are 22 orphans who still need to be sponsored through Hope Children’s Fund’s sponsorship program - $1/day or $365/year will help send these children to school so they have a better chance to succeed. Upon sponsoring a child, you will receive a photo and bio of them, and you can write letters/send e-mails directly to the child to provide them with hopeful messages to brighten their days. Kevin and his wife often travel to Meru to visit the orphanage and welcome sponsors to travel along to meet firsthand the child they sponsor. Another way you can become involved is by hosting a craft fair to sell Kenyan crafts made by the Meru Women’s Collective. You will be provided with the goods, and all the profits generated will go back to the children at the orphanage. Contact Kevin Mann for more information. Leaving a (Paw) Print I recently received an e-mail for an event listing from a teacher at my old high school, which sparked a conversation about how many years it’s been since I roamed those very hallways myself {approaching 18, nearly half of my lifetime} and how it might be nice to stop by to say hello to the relatively few teachers who remain there after all this time. Which got me to thinking… there was a time when my fellow alumni and I couldn’t wait to “visit” after we graduated, popping in every few months or so to see what was new and exciting in the world of Lindy High. As the years passed, college came and went, and we found ourselves employed in our various fields of study, these encounters became few and far between. We no longer related to those teenagers who breezed by on their way to class, nor did we
see high school as the center of the only universe we had ever inhabited. We now had the world before us, one that included days not marked by a bell schedule, job descriptions not dictated by a syllabus. Sure, there was the occasional visit to the old college campus now; perhaps a special “guest” speaking engagement to a group of soon-to-be grads about to embark on their own adventures into the great world of career exploration. But that was where the academic connection ceased. Fast forward nearly two decades past these formative years, and the nostalgia for simpler times has returned. Having the opportunity to reconnect with those friends and former classmates has taken on added significance as the years have passed. Several have left us far too soon; others’ lives have taken
them to the far reaches of the country, making the advent of social media a welcome - and perhaps the only - connection. But among the hundreds that we graduated with, there are also the dozens who still reside right here on Long Island, instantly reachable and available to reminisce at any time. It’s a comforting thought, that ability to pick up where you left off at a given point, to chat about old times and new pursuits, and to realize - with rare exception - that we are all dealing with the same daily struggle to find that sense of fulfillment that was promised to us all those years ago. Perhaps a visit to the old high school stomping grounds is in order; a “refresher course,” if you will, courtesy of the very place where it all began. As they like to say in Lindy… once a Bulldog, always a Bulldog…
