Pravato To Host Free Property Tax Assessment Grievance Workshops

Town of Oyster Bay Receiver of Taxes Jeffrey Pravato will host two free Property Tax Assessment Grievance Workshops for residents looking to acquire information on how to challenge their 2024-2025 property tax assessments.

The workshops will be held inperson on February 8, 2023 at 7pm at the North Massapequa Community Center (214 N. Albany Ave., Massapequa) and on February 13th at 10am at Town Hall North (54 Audrey Ave., Oyster Bay).

“While Nassau County determines your value, we in Town government want to make sure you know that you have a right as a homeowner to challenge your

assessment. Remember, your assessment can only be lowered as the result of a challenge –it can never be raised – and this workshop helps you challenge for free,” said Receiver of Taxes Pravato. “If you are a homeowner who disagrees with the assessed value of your property, I invite you to attend this Property Tax Assessment Workshop, as the property tax grievance deadline of March 1 is approaching.”

In January, Nassau County notified residents of their home’s tentative assessed value for the 2024/2025 school tax period and the 2025 general tax period. Any residents who did not receive the notice may view it online at www. mynassauproperty.com

or contact their County Legislator.

At the workshop, Receiver of Taxes Pravato will answer questions and show residents how to use online tools to file an “Application for Correction of Property Tax Assessment” online or via mail. There is no requirement to pay a law firm or agency to file a grievance. For those unable to attend the workshop, Receiver of Taxes Pravato offers an online video at www. oysterbaytown.com/ grievancevideo

For more information on the Free Property Tax Grievance Workshop, please call (516) 6246380. For more information on your property, visit https:// lrv.nassaucountyny.gov

Seaford Harbor Honors Legendary Crossing Guard

For 30 years, Nassau County crossing guard Cheryl Schollp helped youngsters safely navigate their way to Seaford Harbor Elementary School from her post at the corner of Neptune Avenue and Bayview Street. “Ms. Cheryl” or “Ms. Sherry” as she was known to students, retired on Jan. 20 and the school honored her during an afternoon ceremony.

Principal Thomas Burke and Assistant Principal Caroline Stringer were joined by Ms. Schollp’s family and friends, as well

as local and state elected officials. Fifth grade students comprised the audience, as many have been safely guided by Ms. Schollp to and from school for the last six years.

“Our theme this year is ‘Harbor Hearts and Hands Work Better Together,’” Mr. Burke said. “Miss Sherry has extended her heart and hand to so many children who she has helped cross that Bayview and Neptune intersection. We are truly grateful for all she has done for us and we now recognize her as one of our

Harbor Legends.”

Fifth graders from the school’s Safety Patrol, which has tasks at arrival and dismissal each day, wanted to honor a person who shares the same to commitment to safety. They presented Ms. Schollp with gifts and sang for her, “We Will, We Will Miss You.”

After the ceremony, Ms. Schollp walked the halls of Harbor, where students lined up to applaud, cheer and present her with their handmade cards and drawings.

Aspiring Leaders

Tapped For Regional Conference

Recognized for their potential, four Seaford High School sophomores have been selected to attend the 2023 Hugh O’Brian Youth Leadership conference. Ava Caruso, Myles Munro, Anastasia Perlegis and Joseph Sanfilippo will join their peers from the New York metro area for a leadership seminar in early June.

Students are selected as HOBY ambassadors as sophomores to prepare them for school leadership roles typically taken on by juniors and seniors. Ava, Myles, Anastasia and Joseph were selected from eight candidates. They were interviewed by a panel of administrators, guidance counselors and

past HOBY ambassadors.

“I want to learn new ways and strategies to help others and better myself,” said Joseph, who is already very involved in school as a member of the National Art Honor Society, Model Congress, track team and Viking Cove school store. “I always make an effort to be a leader in school and being nominated shows it’s not for nothing.”

Anastasia said it was an honor to be chosen because that means other people recognize her leadership qualities. She is an active member of the National Art Honor Society, Mural Club and honors program.

“I want to find ways to make a big difference and help as many people as I

can,” Anastasia said.

Ava, who is captain of the bowling team and a member of field hockey, track, Mathletes, the Science Club, National Art Honor Society and Books and Bagels, is looking forward to the conference and bringing knowledge back to Seaford High School.

“I’m very excited to learn about how to be a better leader,” she said. “It’s nice that someone else notices that I’m working hard.”

Myles, a member of the track team, said, “It’s an opportunity to learn how to really be a leader and to take my academics and my leadership forward.”

Helping You Help Others

The Charity of the Month for February is The Corporate Source

The Corporate Source (TCS) is a non-profit organization that started in 1996. They strive to change the perceptions of individuals with disabilities in the workforce by having them work in integrated settings where their value, productivity, commitment and dedication can be experienced by all. To accomplish this mission, TCS addresses the factors a ecting employment inequity and overcomes barriers to employment that keep this staggering number of people with disabilities excluded from the workforce. TCS is extremely proud of their work and today the operate in over 100 locations , many here on Long Island, NY.

Despite an increased knowledge base and laws, such as the Americans With Disabilities Act, the overwhelming number of people with disabilities are either unemployed or underemployed. In America alone, roughly 61 million adults live with a disability. Today, about 1 in 6 American children are diagnosed with a developmental disability and they then age out of most public programming when they become 21. With less to do each day and having fewer prospects for employment, these young adults often become socially isolated and depressed.

Sometimes, employers may have misconceptions which make them reluctant to hire a person with disabilities. TCS works to change perceptions to show employers the benefits of an inclusive workforce. Given the opportunity to demonstrate their skills and capabilities, these employees show dependability, honesty, tenacity and dedication to doing the best job possible. Several TCS workers have received awards and recognition for their achievements and outstanding performance on the job.

TCS employs nearly 400 people with disabilities in the greater New York tristate region, Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands, providing outsourcing services to several federal, state and

private sector organizations. A small sample of their longterm client collaborations include Janitorial and Disinfecting Services for the US Merchant Marine Academy, Mail-room Operations at Long Island and NYC Internal Revenue Service locations, Call Center Support at the Manhattan VA Medical Center and Kennel Care for the Department of Homeland Security at JFK Airport.

Most recently, they have partnered with the Computing Technology Industry Association (CompTIA) to develop a program for professionally educating and training people with disabilities for entry level positions in the growing IT field. Corporations like Microsoft, Ernst & Young and more have had very positive experiences where people with disabilities are e ective for these positions from a number of perspectives.

This non-profit works year-round through special events, networking opportunities, social media outreach and other e orts to raise awareness and funds to support disability employment initiatives. There are many ways that you can support the mission of TCS.

For more information, visit www. thecorporatesource.org or contact Ruth-Ann Gater at ruth-ann.gater@ thecorporatesource.org and stay tuned for next week’s article. If your nonprofit would like to be featured in this column, please call Noelle Lambert at 631.226.2636 x225 for consideration.

Ethical Friends of Children, a free shop for Long Island children in need, is requesting donations of girls’ clothing, sizes 2 to 5. This outreach program, run and supported by the Ethical Humanist Society of Long Island in Garden City, assists more than 2500 children and their families each year by providing them with clothing, backpacks for school and infant furniture. The service is set up like a store so people can select what they want from a wide variety of clothes. “As we’ve set up our winter store, we are finding a gap in our supply of clothing for little girls,” says Ethical Friends of Children Director Jim LoPresti of Massapequa Park.

Ethical Friends of Children, established in 1985, is staffed entirely by volunteers and there is no charge for any services. Individuals,

Little Girls Need Clothing

families, or community groups donate gently used clothing and other things children may require, such as backpacks. Any cash donations go entirely towards purchase of needed items for children, such as diapers and formula.

“Customers” are referred by many of the area’s social service organizations and are supported by both religiously affiliated and private agencies funded by Nassau and Suffolk Counties

Volunteers are always welcome to help sort, organize and deliver clothing and goods.

To volunteer or donate, please contact office@ ehsli.org

Or call the the Ethical Humanist Society of LI at 516-741-7304.

THE NASSAU COUNTY TREASURER Mineola, NewYork TERMS OF SALE

Such tax liens shall be sold subject to any and all superior tax liens of sovereignties and other municipalities and to all claims of record which the County may have thereon and subject to the provisions of the Federal and State Soldiers’ and Sailors’ Civil Relief Acts. However, such tax liens shall have priority over the County’s Differential Interest Lien, representing the excess, if any, of the interest and penalty borne at the maximum rate over the interest and penalty borne at the rate at which the lien is purchased.

The Purchaser acknowledges that the tax lien(s) sold pursuant to these Terms of Sale may be subject to pending bankruptcy proceedings and/ or may become subject to such proceedings which may be commenced during the period in which a tax lien is held by a successful bidder or the assignee of same, which may modify a Purchaser’s rights with respect to the lien(s) and the property securing same. Such bankruptcy proceedings shall not affect the validity of the tax lien. In addition to being subject to pending bankruptcy proceedings and/or the Federal and State Soldiers’ and Sailors’ Civil Relief Acts, said purchaser’s right of foreclosure may be affected by the Financial Institutions Reform, Recovery and Enforcement Act(FIRREA),12 U.S.C. ss 1811 et.seq., with regard to real property under Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation(FDIC) receivership.

The County Treasurer reserves the right, without further notice and at any time, to withdraw from sale any of the parcels of land or premises herein listed. The Nassau County Treasurer reserves the right to intervene in any bankruptcy case/ litigation where the property affected by the tax liens sold by the Treasurer is part of the bankruptcy estate. However, it is the sole responsibility of all

tax lien purchasers to protect their legal interests in any bankruptcy case affecting their purchased tax lien, including but not limited to the filing of a proof of claim on their behalf, covering their investment in said tax lien. The Nassau County Treasurer and Nassau County and its agencies, assumes no responsibility for any legal representation of any tax lien purchaser in any legal proceeding including but not limited to a bankruptcy case where the purchased tax lien is at risk.

The rate of interest and penalty at which any person purchases the tax lien shall be established by his bid. Each purchaser, immediately after the sale thereof, shall pay to the County Treasurer ten per cent of the amount for which the tax liens have been sold and the remaining ninety per cent within thirty days after such sale. If the purchaser at the tax sale shall fail to pay the remaining ninety per cent within ten days after he has been notified by the County Treasurer that the certificates of sale are ready for delivery, then all amounts deposited with the County Treasurer including but not limited to the ten per cent theretofore paid by him shall, without further notice or demand, be irrevocably forfeited by the purchaser and shall be retained by the County Treasurer as liquidated damages and the agreement to purchase shall be of no further effect. Time is of the essence in this sale. This sale is held pursuant to the Nassau County Administrative Code and interested parties are referred to such Code for additional information as to terms of the sale, rights of purchasers, maximum rates of interest and other legal incidents of the sale.

Furthermore, as to the bidding,

1. The bidder(s) agree that they will not work with any other bidder(s) to increase, maintain or stabilize interest rates or collaborate with any other bidder(s) to gain an unfair competitive advantage in the random number generator in the event of a tie bid(s) on a tax certificate. Bidder(s) further agree not to employ any bidding strategy designed to create an unfair competitive advantage in the tiebreaking process in the upcoming tax sale nor work with any other bidder(s) to engage in any bidding strategy that will result in a rotational award of tax certificates.

The Modern Era

The modern era is often referred to as the “Digital Age,” but mankind’s relationship with science and technology dates back much further than the 21st century. According to Wired.com, in 2006 scientists confirmed that a device discovered in 1900 amid the remains of an ancient Mediterranean shipwreck was an analog computer. The device, since dubbed the “Antikythera Computer,” was believed to help calculate astronomical cycles so sailors could more easily sail between Alexandria and Athens. The Antikythera Computer has been dated to sometime around the first century B.C., proving that man’s fascination with gadgets is an ancient one that has been paying dividends for millenia.

Hometown Heroes Recognition Applications Now Available

Oyster Bay Town

Supervisor Joseph Saladino and Councilman Steve Labriola announced that the Town is now accepting applications for the 2023 Hometown Heroes’ Community Recognition Program. This initiative recognizes the service and sacrifice of the brave men and women of the United States Armed Forces – both living and deceased – who are current or former Town of Oyster Bay residents.

“My Town Board colleagues and I were amazed by the outpouring of support this program has received from residents, businesses and local heroes,” said Councilman Labriola. “We are proud to return this important initiative to our communities and look forward to further recognizing our veterans, active duty service members,

and their families for their commitment to defend our freedoms and democracy.”

Banners bearing the nominated individual’s name, rank, photograph and area of service will be unveiled throughout selected park facilities across the Town of Oyster Bay in the months leading up to Veterans Day in November.

Any interested individual or organization who would wish to sponsor a banner can remit $75 to sponsor the production of a banner. No profit is made from this program. Once the banners are displayed, the Town will maintain the banners, and will remain on display until Veterans Day, where they will then be taken down to avoid any inclement winter weather and returned to the service family or their loved ones. Those who sponsored a banner last year

are reminded to submit a new application in order to be included in the 2023 season. Applications must be received by March 10, 2023.

Supervisor Saladino added, “This is an especially meaningful way to honor those who bravely and selflessly served our nation. Together as a community we will honor the brave men and women of the United States Armed Forces who sacrificed a great deal for our nation, as well as many local veterans who continue to serve our community and their fellow veterans through advocacy efforts.”

For more information on how to sponsor a banner, visit www.oysterbaytown.com/ herobanners to download or submit an application, or call (516) 797-4121.

Town Announces Upcoming Drawing, Knitting And Painting Classes Register Online For Cultural Enrichment Classes

Beginning Feb. 6th

Oyster Bay Town Councilman Tom Hand announced that registration for the Town’s Spring 2023 Cultural Enrichment Programs will be held online only for the first time. Both residents and non-residents must register for classes including Figure Drawing, Outdoor Painting, Chunky Hand-Knit Blanket, Watercolor Painting, Oil Painting, Drawing Fundamentals, Sumi-E Painting and Painting with Acrylics online at www. oysterbaytown.com/portal.

“I am pleased to announce that the Town’s Cultural Enrichment Program will return once again this spring, as these enrichment programs offer residents the opportunity to develop a new skill while having fun in the process,” Councilman Hand said. “To streamline the registration process and increase convenience and accessibility for residents, we’ve opened registration online only for the first time. Our dedicated staff will be available to assist all interested participants, whether you’re an emerging artist or a resident looking for a new hobby.”

Resident registration begins on Monday, February 6th at 9 a.m., while Non-Resident registration begins on Tuesday, February 21st at 9 a.m. To register, visit www.oysterbaytown.com/

portal, create an account, select the Cultural Enrichment link on the homepage, choose the class(es) you’d like to register for by checking the box, and then select Add to Cart. Please note the fees vary for residents and non-residents. You will next be prompted to select the eligible members on your account; check off all family members that you wish to enroll in the class, and then press continue. Once you’ve

proceeded to checkout and submitted your credit card information, a receipt will be linked on the confirmation screen and will also be emailed to you, along with a copy of the supply list for the class, if applicable.

For assistance registering, or for more information, please call the Department of Community & Youth Services, Cultural and Performing Arts (CAPA) at (516) 797-7923.
