The Charity of the Month for January is Pal-O-Mine Equestrian

www.pal-o-mine.org

Pal-O-Mine

Equestrian is a local non-profit organization that began in 1995 as a therapeutic horseback riding program for individuals with disabilities and other vulnerable populations. They grew from having two programs, eight horses and 80 students per week to 11 programs, 25 horses and 400 students per week - and they continue to grow today!

“Our mission has been, and continues to be, to provide a comprehensive therapeutic equine program using horses to facilitate growth, learning and healing,” said Lisa Gatti, Founder and CEO of Pal-O-Mine Equestrian. “We proudly serve individuals with disabilities, those who have been abused or neglected, the military and the impoverished.”

Their location in Islandia offers an unequaled setting for equestrian activities, with a 20-stall barn on 13 acres, handicapped accessible bathrooms, a 100’ x 120’ indoor arena with state-of-the-art-footing and a rider hoisting system, 3 outdoor riding arenas, classrooms, accessible playground, a greenhouse and a wellness center.

Looking back on 2022, Pal-O-Mine logged 4,250 hours of Volunteer Hours and 86,400 Client Contact Hours. “2022 was about inspiring one another to reach common goals and emerging stronger,” said Lisa. “Our volunteers are an integral part of the day to day

operations at Pal-O-Mine.

They also aded four new animals to their gang; three horses and a Great Pyrenees Mountain Dog, Luca who is a natural at his job of watching over the herd. Bubba, one of the horses was generously donated to them by the Morris Family. He is an amazing lesson horse and is a client favorite in their equine yoga program. Another one of the horses is Alana, a pro at teaching new students to ride independently. Lastly, Sunflower is their newest horse, which is enjoying to learn about all the different programs held at Pal-O-Mine.

Pravato Reminds Residents To Avoid Penalties

By Paying General Taxes Prior To February 10th

Oyster Bay Town

Receiver of Taxes Jeffrey Pravato reminds residents that the First Half of the 2023 General Tax Levy was due on January 1st, but can be paid without penalty through February 10th. Please be certain to sign your check, payable to Jeffrey P. Pravato, Receiver of Taxes. Indicate your property’s S.D. Code, Section, Block, Lot, and Phone number on the check.

“The Town of Oyster Bay did not raise taxes for 2023, however, the General Tax bill also includes amounts for Nassau County and special districts. New York State Laws allows my office to provide taxpayers with a 40-day penalty free period from the date the tax is due during which payment may be made without penalty,” added Receiver Pravato.

“After the 40 days, State Law requires a one percent

penalty be added for each month the tax remains unpaid, retroactive to January 1st. Don’t delay, make your payment before February 10th and ensure you aren’t paying more out of pocket than you need to.”

Taxes can be paid inperson at Town Hall North (74 Audrey Avenue in Oyster Bay) and at Town Hall South (977 Hicksville Road in Massapequa) daily from 9:00am to 4:45pm to assist residents and accept payments with either a check, cash or credit card.*

Both indoor offices and walkup outdoor windows are staffed to assist the public. On February 9th and 10th, both offices will be open from 8:00am to 6:00pm. When paying in person, residents are reminded to bring the entire tax bill. Drop Boxes have been installed at both Town Hall North and Town

Hall South for residents to make payments when the Tax Office is closed.

Residents who prefer to mail in their payments should send them to the Office of the Receiver of Taxes, 74 Audrey Avenue, Oyster Bay, N.Y. 117711539. Please be certain to sign your check, and make it payable to Jeffrey P. Pravato, Receiver of Taxes. Indicate your property’s S.D. Code, Section, Block, Lot and phone number on the check, along with your payment stub. Residents should NOT write on, fold, staple or otherwise deface the tax stub as it can cause the computer system to reject the payment.

Taxpayers can access 2023 General Tax information at www. oysterbaytown.com. Residents may view tax bills, print out a hard copy, or pay taxes with an ACH check payment

using a checking account for a service fee of $1.75 cents*, or by credit card for a much higher fee* charged by the credit card companies. *Town of Oyster Bay receives no portion of this fee.

For more information on property taxes and/or payments, residents may call at (516) 624-6400 or email receiveroftaxes@ oysterbay-ny.gov. Callers are requested to have the school district, section, block and lot numbers of the property in question available. This information is listed on the tax bill and on the property deed.

In The Gym, These Seaford Seniors Are Extraordinary Leaders

Seaford High School seniors Will Cascio and Marina Dupkin were honored for their active role in physical education classes. They were the 2022-2023 recipients of the Outstanding Physical Education Student Award, presented by the Nassau Zone of the New York State Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance.

The award recognizes two students from every high school, one female and one male, who exemplify

physical performance, scholastic ability and leadership qualities. Will and Marina were selected by the Seaford High School physical education faculty. In physical education classes, Will said he wants to make sure that everyone is having fun and actively participating. He added that it is humbling that the physical education teachers felt he was deserving of this award. Will is a member of the cross country, winter track and spring track teams.

Marina said she shows leadership by striving to make the gym a safe space for all. During a recent volleyball unit, she used her knowledge of the sport as a member of Seaford’s varsity team to help teach her classmates different skills. Being recognized as a leader, Marina added, is an honor.

Will and Marina were invited to an awards dinner at the Crest Hollow Country Club, where all Nassau County recipients of the award were honored.

Residents Reminded To Turn ‘Trash Into Cash’

Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph

colleagues

Town government Councilman Lou Imbroto, Councilwoman Laura Maier and Receiver of Taxes Jeff Pravato to bring good news to Town residents who receive Town recycling collection. Beginning in January, the Town will return glass to its recycling collection, allowing residents to place plastics, metals and glass all in their yellow collection pail. In addition, officials reminded residents to help turn ‘trash into cash’

by recycling cardboard, which should be bundled and placed beside recycling containers on collection day. Supervisor Saladino said, “Residents can help protect the environment and turn trash into cash by recycling glass and cardboard boxes on their regular recycling collection day. In addition to expanding the recycling program to include additional types of plastic, we will also return glass to the recycling stream. The Town of Oyster Bay is committed to being a regional recycling leader and I thank you in

advance for helping us reach that goal.”

Officials also reminded residents to bundle their cardboard and paper products beside their yellow recycling pail, either broken down and placed inside a larger box or bundled with string. Residents can expect to see individual pickups for these items, with separate collections for cardboard from other recycling.

For more information, visit www.oysterbaytown. com or call (516) 677-5848.

Special Public Skating Sessions For Martin Luther King Holiday

Oyster Bay Town Councilwoman Laura Maier announced that residents looking for a fun way to spend their Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday can head to one of the Town’s three ice skating facilities, where holiday hours will be in place, offering extended public skating opportunities.

“For a fun, familyfriendly activity, residents can head to one of the Town’s ice skating rinks –outdoors at Marjorie Post and Syosset-Woodbury Community Parks, and

indoors at the Town of Oyster Bay Ice Skating Center in Bethpage – on Martin Luther King Jr. Day,” said Councilwoman Maier. “All three facilities will be offering special public sessions to provide children who are off from school with a fun-filled activity.”

On Monday, January 16th, all Town of Oyster Bay Ice Skating Rinks will be open for public sessions from 1pm-3pm and 4pm6pm. The outdoor ice rinks are located at Marjorie Post Park, Unqua and Merrick

Roads in Massapequa, and at Syosset-Woodbury Community Park, 7900 Jericho Turnpike in Woodbury. The Town of Oyster Bay Ice Skating Center is located within Bethpage Community Park at 1001 Stewart Avenue, in Bethpage.

For more information, including information about the Town’s Youth Ice Hockey Program, figure skating, or general skating sessions, visit www. oysterbaytown.com/ice.

Sanitation, Recycling Collection Modified For MLK Holiday

Oyster Bay Town Councilman Lou Imbroto reminds residents that Town sanitation and S.O.R.T. Recycling collection schedules will be modified for the Monday, January 16th observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

“There will be no sanitation or recycling

collection on Monday, January 16th for residents who normally receive Town service,” Councilman Imbroto said. “Residents who generally receive Town pickup on Mondays will have their collections done the next day, Tuesday, January 17th. Those who usually receive pickup on Tuesdays will be collected

on Wednesday, January 18th.”

The Councilman added that Town offices will be closed on Martin Luther King Jr. Day, but parks and skating rinks will be open and offer extended hours. For more information, visit the Town’s website, www.oysterbaytown.com.

Young Scientists Explore The World Around Them

Seaford Middle School hosted its first in-person science fair in nearly three years, as students displayed their findings at an afterschool event on Dec. 6.

This year’s fair featured 14 participants and students could work either independently or with a partner. While they worked on their projects at home, students were welcome to attend the weekly Science Club meetings with teachers Kevin Mullany and Roseann Zeblisky to seek guidance on their projects or use specific science equipment.

Ms. Zeblisky said that students could explore just about any topic they wanted, and had to follow

the scientific method for their experiments. This year, they also had the option of creating a traditional display board with their experiment details and results or making a digital presentation.

“We wanted them to have fun with science and to explore something that they’re interested in,” she said.

Seventh grader Zak Dyckman learned about science and got to enjoy a tasty snack, too, as he studied how different leavening agents rise differently. He showcased cookies that were made with baking soda, baking powder and cornstarch.

“If you want to execute

an experiment the right way,” he said, “you can only change one variable at a time.”

Rianne Iannacone and Macartney Jeziorski worked together to see which candy’s coating – Skittles and M&Ms – dissolved quicker in water. They created a PowerPoint presentation with their results. Christo Perlegis studied the effect of shoes on speed. He was assisted by his sister, who ran a set distance in four different types of shoes, while he recorded her times.

“I enjoyed being outside and having the chance to use science and math,” he said.

Eighth Graders Building Up To Bots Battle

It’s almost competition season in eighth grade robotics classes at Seaford Middle School. After months of learning how to build and program robots, students are now working in groups to prepare for robot battles that will close out the semester.

Technology teacher Matthew Dolan explained that two robots will compete at a time on a playing field. The robots will have to knock down a tray, which will scatter

a bunch of rings that can be gathered up and put through a goal post to earn points. Blue and green rings gain points, while red rings lose points so teams can try to reduce their opponents’ score in the two-minute challenges.

Each robot includes a claw so students can also earn points if their robots can climb a tower and hang from a yellow bar. The young engineers will continue working over the next few weeks before

the competitions begin in January.

Eighth graders are using Vex robotics kits, which include all of the building pieces and a digital instruction manual, and they are using their knowledge from the course to program all of the movements. Mr. Dolan said that this culminating activity emphasize strategizing and teamwork through fun and friendly competition.

Pearl Harbor 81st Commemorative Anniversary At Airpower Museum

On Sunday, December 7, 1941 the Japanese launched a surprise military assault on the U.S. naval base at Pearl Harbor in Hawaii. On December 8, 1941 President Franklin Delano Roosevelt gave his famous “date which will live in infamy” speech and following that Congress declared war and the United States entered into

World War II.

Eighty one years later Veterans from all branches of the service came together to commemorate the anniversary of the bombing of Pearl Harbor at the Air Power Museum in Farmingdale, New York.

Veterans from World War II ranging in age from 93 to 102 were honored and given certificates

for their service. During the ceremony a bugler played taps in memory of those that perished on that day. Color Guards were provided by the Navy Reserves and other veterans organizations.

Over 200 Veterans and family members as well as local elected officials attended the commemorative ceremony.

Elderly Army Veteran Has Wish

Ron Matonti, a resident of Medford, New York, had his wish for restaurant gift cards granted, thanks to the Long Island chapter of national nonprofit Twilight Wish Foundation. Matonti is an Army veteran who has congenital heart failure and is homebound. Because of this, he relies mostly on canned foods that are delivered to him from a local food pantry. His wish is to receive restaurant and food delivery gift cards so that he can order fresh food instead of just eating canned foods.

Matonti was nominated by Melanie Corinne, the project coordinator for the Joseph Dwyer Peer Support Project in Suffolk County. Long Island Chapter Director James Ciervo and Corinne delivered the gift card basket to Matonti on Friday, December 17th at his Medford home.

Twilight Wish Foundation is a nonprofit charitable organization whose mission is to honor and enrich the lives of seniors through intergenerational Twilight Wish celebrations. Since its founding in 2003, Twilight Wish has granted over 4,810 individual wishes to seniors throughout the U.S. Twilight Wish grants wishes to seniors who are 65 and older or a permanent resident of a nursing home and earn less than 200% of poverty level. If you would like to nominate a deserving senior or get involved with Twilight Wish, please visit the website at www.twilightwish.org or call 215230-8777 ext. 104.

An apple a day may keep the doctor away, but a recent study found drinking tea might keep the cardiologist at bay.

The USDA reported that men and women who drank black tea for three weeks reduced their total and bad

cholesterol (LDL) levels by an average of 7.5 percent. Researchers concluded that drinking tea may reduce the

risk of coronary heart disease. Antioxidants called flavonoids, found in both green and black teas, are thought to

be potent weapons in the fight against heart disease.

That news may be especially important

for women, given that heart disease kills more women than all forms of cancer combined including breast cancer.

This Winter, Make Protecting Your Pipes A Priority!

Whether you love a winter wonderland or would rather hibernate, one thing we can all agree on is that winterizing our pipes is a priority since the bitter cold winter air can bring unwanted disasters in your home.

“Every winter, we get calls from customers with frozen pipes, which is not only inconvenient and frustrating, but it can be very expensive to clean up

and repair,” said Brenda Wall, Director of Operations, Liberty New York Water. “We want to encourage all of our customers to take some time to winterize their homes and familiarize themselves with the additional tips for extended freezes to protect their home’s plumbing. It will save both time and money.”

Indoor tips:

• Keep the temperature in your home at no less than 55 degrees.

• Wrap your pipes with insulation.

doors open to let warmer air in.

• During periods of an extended freeze, let a small trickle of water flow to keep the water running through the pipes.

• Fix drafty windows and doors to avoid cold air hitting the pipes.

Outdoor tips:

drained.

• Know the location of your main water valve and how to turn it off.

• Disconnect all hoses and drain water remaining in faucets.
