Amtrak Repair Work at Penn Station Will Affect Some LIRR Customers Starting January 8 Here’s what the MTA is doing to help Beginning Monday, January 8, 2018, Amtrak will be conducting repair work at Penn Station that requires changes to Long Island Rail Road scheduled service.

What you can do For complete schedule change details, be sure to pick up our special timetables effective Monday, January 8 at your nearest station or at mta.info/lirr. To help minimize the impact this construction will have on our customers, the LIRR is making changes that will allow us to maintain capacity into Penn Station. These changes include: • Rerouting five of the 98 morning rush hour trains that normally go to Penn Station • Rerouting three of the 86 evening rush hour trains that normally depart from Penn Station • Adding four trains before or after rush hours – two in the morning and two in the afternoon/evening – plus one additional PM peak train from Hunterspoint Avenue • Adding cars to five trains to increase seating capacity • Combining two evening rush hour trains with prior or subsequent trains that depart within the same time frame (approximately six to 11 minutes) and serve all affected stations

And so, we begin again. The slate has been wiped clean, for now. There is always carryover, damage to be repaired and turmoil to be calmed. Life is like that, for better or worse.

As much as a new year cannot undo the happenings of the year prior, each new day is an opportunity for a fresh start of sorts; each hour, each minute even. We have only to forge ahead, to take these chances as they are presented to us.

May we all carry this sentiment with us into 2018… and, if you do happen to have a neatly categorized list of goals for the year, give it a glance from time to time; make adjustments as needed, and keep moving forward.

“We have Halston, Saint Laurent, Lanvin, and all these different designers that we talk about,” Serota said. “We discuss the decade they’re from and what the lasting influences are and now we have this collection here.”

For many, the holiday season is a time of giving and receiving. A lot of us are so fortunate that we get showered with presents and then ring in the New Year with joyous thoughts of new beginnings. But what about the rest of us? Let’s not forget about those who really need our help!

The Long Island Coalition for the Homeless is an organization that was originally founded as the Nassau-Suffolk Partnership for the Homeless in 1985. LICH now works to educate the public and advocates for the development and expansion of permanent, affordable housing - so those working in low-wage jobs and/or on disability and public assistance can have decent, safe housing for themselves and their children.

This organization brings together over 60 nonprofits and local government with the mission to help people on Long Island who are facing homelessness or are homeless. Each month, their members come together and listen to current concerns and opportunities within the nonprofit community, learn about openings in housing placements and more.

The Coalition runs a popular Boutique in Amityville, right by their main office. The Boutique is open on Monday and Thursday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and allows veterans and other neighbors-inneed to access, free of charge, new and gently used essential items such as clothing, housewares and emergency food.

This Boutique is much more than a distribution

center, as it engages the community in volunteerism and spreads awareness about the issue of homelessness. The Boutique always welcomes volunteers and donations and offers community service hours to those willing to volunteer! At this point in time, they are currently taking donations for the following items: winter coats, hats, gloves, scarves, toiletries and baby essentials such as wipes and diapers.

They are also in need of volunteers for their next sorting event on January 20th from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

LICH also offers annual events that you can become involved with such as their “Have a Heart for the Homeless” Candlelight Vigil (scheduled for April 10th, 2018), their Homeless Count and their Backpack Pirates and Supply for our Students events. Their annual Homeless Count Event occurs each January, and is a time when trained volunteers go out across the island to coordinate point-in-time counts of sheltered and unsheltered men, women and children.

During this time, they also distribute toiletry kits, sleeping bags and other essential items to the homeless.

The activity had all the bells and whistles — literally. A teacher blew a wooden whistle throughout the readaloud, and all students received their own necklace with a bell on it. Images from the book were projected on a big screen at the front of

the “train.” The readaloud supported the kindergarten literacy curriculum, which promotes active listening and shared reading.

Teachers and students throughout the school were dressed in their pajamas. It was part of Manor’s spirit week leading up to the holiday break, which also included Seaford pride day and ugly sweater day. One day was also devoted to giving compliments and performing random acts of kindness.

Meeting Local Heroes Seaford Harbor Elementary School welcomed local heroes to the school on December 14th to give children a sense of the people in their community who are there to help. Unsung Heroes Day featured members of the police department, fire department, medical services and military.

Assistant Principal Caroline Schozer said the purpose was to show students that heroes “don’t always have capes and fly around.” The local heroes talked to students about their jobs and answered questions.

Seaford High School’s annual toy drive continues to help more and more children, as this year the Student Council collected more than 1,000 toys to benefit several organizations on Long Island.

Students from the high school and middle school made donations, as did community residents and local Boy Scouts. Officers from the Student Council sorted and wrapped the gifts before playing the part of Santa’s elves and delivering them to preschool students at Hempstead Head Start and Westbury Head Start in the week leading up to Christmas.

Advisers Tania Cintorino and Shari Raduazzo

explained that each child would receive two gifts as well as a trinket such a toy car, puzzle or book. They also said that some toys would go to Freeport Head Start, the pediatric ward at Nassau University Medical Center, Mercy First and Family and Children’s Services.

“We give to kids who are less fortunate than us,” Student Council President Noah Crean said. “We give them a holiday that we take for granted.”

Senior Anna Gagliano, the Student Council treasurer, said the number of donations has increased in each of the four years she has participated in the drive. Junior Secretary Chris Schneider added that the toy drive brings

Additionally, this holiday season, students from the National Honor Society twice volunteered at the Mary Brennan Soup Kitchen in Hempstead.

They served meals, worked in the clothing boutique and pantry, and helped to sort and stock donations.

Sixth-grade teacher Mary Lou Christenson, who organized the event, said that money was used to purchase materials to make blankets. The idea came from student Mia Kouletsis. National Junior Honor Society members made the blankets, which

were donated to the A. Holly Patterson Extended Rehab Facility in Uniondale.

Art teachers Stephanie Lucia and James Pollin judged all the doors and selected first- through third-place winners.
