ave the cold winter months left your home feeling a bit dirty, drab or disorganized? Are you feeling the urge to purge? Then it’s time for some cleaning. With a few simple tips and tricks, your home—and mood—can be refreshed and revitalized.

For the biggest payoff for your efforts, focus cleaning in the areas of the home that are used most: the kitchen and bathroom.

Safety First When Power Washing Your Home

• Always test the ground fault circuit interrupter (circuit breaker or outlet) before using a pressure washer.

nterior spaces are not the only areas of a home that can benefit from some extra attention once the weather warms up.

• Always plug a properly grounded pressure washer into a properly grounded receptacle.

Harsh winters can take a toll on home exteriors. Dirt and grime can build up on exterior home surfaces over the course of the winter, affecting the appearance of the siding of a home as well as outdoor entertaining areas.

• If an extension cord must be used, keep the pressure washer’s power cord connection out of and away from any standing water, and use a heavy duty extension cord with components rated for use in wet locations. Keep both the power cord and extension cord connections as far away as possible from the item being washed and away from any water runoff. While power washing, periodically take note of the location of the extension cord connections to ensure they are not in a puddle.

Power washing is a great way to give a home a fresh, clean look once the weather turns warm, but there’s more to power washing than simply renting the right equipment and getting to work. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention notes that there are many risks associated with using power washers. For instance, the CDC says strong spray from power washers can cause serious wounds that initially seem minor. However, such wounds can lead to infection or disability if left untreated. In addition, if manufacturer safety instructions are not followed, electric shock can occur due to improper use.

• Wear rubber-soled shoes that provide some insulation when using the pressure washer.

Homeowners who are intending to power wash their own homes should first determine if they’re physically capable of doing so. Power washers can be difficult for some people to control, so it’s imperative that homeowners honestly assess their physical abilities before renting a unit. The CDC urges homeowners who determine they can safely handle power washers to take these additional safety steps to make sure the process of cleaning their home exteriors goes smoothly.

• Never point a pressure washer at yourself or others.

• Do not attempt to push or move objects with spray from the washer. If anything is in your way, turn the power washer off and then move the obstruction.

• Never cut or splice the pressure washer’s power cord or extension cords.

• Never remove the grounding prong from the pressure washer’s power cord plug or the extension cord.

• Pause the project if a circuit breaker is tripped. Always have a qualified electrician check the pressure washer for electrical problems after it has tripped a circuit breaker.

• Never allow children to operate a pressure washer. Keep children at a safe distance when an adult is using a pressure washer.

Power washing can give a home a whole new look after a winter’s worth of dirt and grime builds up on the home’s exterior. Safety must remain the utmost priority when operating a power washer on your own.

As of April 1st, the Gardens were re-opened to the public with required reservations, which can be made in advance online. In addition to 200 acres of formal gardens, landscaped grounds, woodlands, ponds and lakes to enjoy, the Old Westbury Gardens team is offering a series of new, captivating programs to engage visitors' horticultural, artistic and historic passions! The line-up will kick-off next month with a brand-new inaugural Garden Days event, followed by the launch of The Great Pine Railway at Old Westbury Gardens, and made complete by the return of the popular Poetica Musica Concert series.

"It has been an unprecedented year, but, we've all come to find comfort in the outdoors, and especially beautiful Gardens,” said Nancy Costopulos, President and CEO of Old Westbury Gardens. From Friday, June 11th through Sunday, June 13th, Old Westbury Gardens will host its first-ever Garden Days event. On Saturday, June 12th, the Gardens will feature an exclusive collection of vendors from across the Northeast. In addition, noted designer Christopher Spitzmiller will be signing his new book, A Year at Clove Brook Farm: Gardening, Tending Flocks, Keeping Bees, Collecting Antiques, and Entertaining Friends. Visitors will have access to unique and rare perennials and annuals, unusual exotics and container specialties, decorative garden furniture, urns, statuary, and horticultural curiosities. Regional garden enthusiasts who attend will discover innovative trends in horticulture and ornamental gardening.

Exclusive tours of private gardens of the North Shore will also be available on Sunday, June 13th, with more information available in the coming weeks.

Another brand-new exhibit coming this season will be The Great Pine Railway at Old Westbury Gardens, which arrives on Saturday, June 19th. Visitors of all ages will be amazed by the outdoor G-gauge railroad display, featuring exquisite model trains chugging along a landscaped backdrop. The exhibit will be complete with an artful replica of Westbury House and other iconic Long Island country homes, created specifically for Old Westbury Gardens. The attraction will run through Monday, September 6th, and be included with the price of admission.

“We’re incredibly excited to welcome The Great Pine Railway at Old Westbury Gardens! I think visitors will really enjoy the stunning trains, and especially the replica of Westbury House. It’s the perfect attraction to have outdoors this season, and we’re pleased to offer something visitors can really look forward to after a scaled-back season last year,” added Costopulos.

Lastly, visitors will be pleased by the return of the popular Poetica Musica Concert series. On Saturday, May 22ns at 7:00 p.m., Just We Three will perform the works of Bach, Mozart, and Durufle, followed by Serenade of Strings, set to perform the works of Dvorak and Borodin on Saturday, June 5th at 7:00 p.m.

Tickets for both concerts are $20.00 for students, seniors and members, and $25.00 for general admission.

Tickets must be purchased online in advance, with limited supply available. While visitors will have unlimited access to the Gardens this season, the Westbury House will reopen June 1st.

How And Why To Build A Raised Garden Bed

F

airly easy to construct and even easier to maintain, raised garden beds are a great way to raise plants and vegetables in the comfort and convenience of your backyard.

In a recent episode of the Exmark Original Series, “Done-in-A-WeekendExtreme,” landscape designer and show host, Doug Scott, spoke to organic gardener Joe Lamp’l of “Growing a Greener World” about the ins and outs of raised garden beds.

Here are some of the top insights and tips Lamp’l shared.

• Why use raised garden beds? A raised garden bed can help facilitate the ideal growing environment, as most people don’t have that perfect soil naturally in their yard. Their accessibility makes them easier to work in and maintain. Plus, they’re a nice architectural design element in any landscape.

• What’s the ideal size? The main rule of the thumb applies to width. The bed should be no wider than 4 feet, as you never want to compact the soil when working. Length however, is based on personal preference and needs. As far as height is concerned, you want the roots to be able to grow out and down as much as possible -- 6-inches at minimum. While 12-inches is common, anything higher is a bonus.

• What materials work best? Treated lumber is the most readily available and economical material and will likely last the longest, however, being an organic gardener Lamp’l prefers untreated hardwood, as it lasts almost as long and doesn’t contain chemicals. Other materials you have around the home and yard, such as rocks, old tubs, etc., can work too.

• Where’s the best location? Build your raised garden bed on level ground, in full sun exposure near a water supply.

4 Tips For A Backyard Barbecue Success

DIY Instructions: To build a 10-foot x 4-foot x 18-inch raised bed, you’ll need: • Nine 6-inch x 6-inch x 12-foot cedar timbers • Tape measure, t-square and marking pencil • A saw and extension cord • One box of 10-inch heavy-duty exterior wood screws • Ten 24-inch x 1/2-inch rebar stakes • Twenty 10-inch galvanized timber spikes • Sledgehammer • Impact drill and long drill bit • Level • Hammer • Shovels • Hardware cloth, wire cutters and fence staples • Work gloves, safety glasses and ear plugs • Wheelbarrow (to transport soil) 1. Begin by cutting six, 6 x 6 timbers, each measuring 10-feet 6-inches in length. And six, 6 x 6 timbers, each measuring 4-feet 6-inches in length.

Drill rebar holes in each timber.

2. Once the first layer of bed has been placed, leveled and squared in your desired location, fasten the corners using 10-inch wood screws. Secure the entire layer to the ground with 10 pieces of rebar.

3. Place the second layer of timbers, staggering the corners and fastening them with wood screws. Secure this layer to the first with ten 10-inch galvanized spikes.

4. Install galvanized cloth to prevent burrowing pests from eating earthworms and destroying plants.

5. Place the third layer of timbers.

6. Fill with soil and plants.

Keep in mind that the temperature outdoors impacts the rate of spoilage for raw and cooked foods. Always keep hot foods hot and cold foods cold (place items on ice or in coolers). The Food and Drug Administration, advises moving leftovers indoors promptly and discarding any items that have been sitting outside for longer than two hours at room temperature. Items should be moved indoors or discarded even more quickly in especially hot conditions.

2. Learn how to smoke. Grilling is one skill, and smoking is another.

4. Set up clusters of seating.

SEG Long Island reminds customers, contractors and excavators to call before digging to avoid hitting underground pipelines, conduits, wires and cables. 811 is the designated national phone number to have underground lines located and marked before projects begin around the home or business.

The safety of the community is a top priority for PSEG Long Island – especially when it comes to safe, reliable power. Social distancing continues to be an important tactic in fighting COVID-19, so PSEG Long Island reminds the public that mark-out work is performed entirely outdoors and there is no need for any interaction between the technician and the person who called to request the mark out.

“Spring is the time of year when many of us begin making improvements to our homes and businesses. Calling 811 ahead of time helps to protect underground

lines and the safety of anyone digging on their properties,” said John O’Connell, PSEG Long Island vice president of Transmission and Distribution Operations. “People are getting the message. Last year there were more than 227,000 markout requests, and so far this year,

Buried gas lines, water pipes and electrical wires may be located beneath your yard. Striking a single line can cause serious injuries, as well as service disruption that may result in repair costs, fines, and environmental damage. The good news is that you can easily avoid these hazards with one free phone call to 811 before you dig.

Who needs to call 811?

Homeowners or contractors planning any project that involves digging, even for small projects such as planting a tree or building a deck, are legally required to call 811 first. Underground electric, gas, communications and water lines are everywhere, even on private property. Call 811 at least 2-10 business days prior to digging to have underground pipes, wires and equipment located and marked for free.

What happens when you call 811?

You'll be automatically connected to the New York 811 call center and asked to provide some basic information about your digging project. New York 811 will then provide the information to the utility companies, who will send representatives to mark the locations of underground lines in the immediate vicinity of your planned work location. Once lines have been properly marked with colored paint, flags or stakes, you are free to carefully dig around the marked areas.

Here’s important information to consider: · An estimated 11 million people in the United States dug last year without first having underground utility lines marked, creating a dangerous situation. Calling 811 before digging reduces the chances of damaging an underground line to less than 1%. · Underground gas and electric lines are everywhere, even on private properties. These facilities can be easily damaged if dug into, with the potential to cause serious injuries. Digging into these lines can also disrupt vital utility services,

Be sure to wait until all of the utilities have responded. Don’t dig until lines have been marked or you have received confirmation that the area is clear of facilities.

Property owners must maintain and respect the marks. Always hand dig within 2 feet of marked lines to find the existing facilities before using mechanized equipment.

How To Design A Fitness Room At Home

Building a home fitness room has never been a more timely project, and such a project can continue to provide rewards even when life returns to some semblance of normalcy. Here’s how to successfully stock a home gym.

• Find a dedicated space. A home gym will be limited by the amount of space that can be devoted to workouts. Possible fitness room locations include a spare bedroom, a garage, a basement, or an enclosed patio. Measure the space so you can pick and choose equipment that will fit. Leave some floor space empty for movement exercises or mat activities.

• Keep the space bright. Darkness can sap energy levels, so invest in mirrors and adequate overhead lighting to make the space inviting.

• Consider the flooring. New flooring can protect against damage and make an area more conductive to working out. Rubber mats can offset echoes and reduce the noise of running on a treadmill or setting down heavy weights.

• Use space-saving equipment. A home gym space will likely not be as expansive as the space inside a traditional fitness center. Thankfully, many activities do not require a lot of space or equipment. Classic exercises like squats, lunges, push ups, and sit ups require little gear but still produce results. Figure out which equipment you like the most and invest in two or three key pieces. Dumbbells of various weights, a medicine ball and a yoga mat can be all you need to create a versatile, effective workout. A TRX system and a door-mounted pullup bar also are great space-saving options.

• Have a TV hookup. A home gym may benefit from a smart TV that you can use to stream workout videos or catch up on the latest news while running the treadmill or using the stationary bike.

A home gym is beneficial yearround, and can be especially valuable when social distancing guidelines are put in place.
