How To Cut Costs On Home Renovations
D
o you still have an avocado green kitchen? Is your living room dank and dark? Perhaps there is only one bathroom for a family of six? Answering yes to any of these questions could serve as the catalyst for a home renovation project. Home improvement projects come in all shapes and sizes — some with huge budgets and others that are more costconscious. Regardless of what homeowners hope to achieve with their renovations, a common goal across any price point is a desire to save as much money as possible. Home renovations can be expensive, but there are ways to cut costs. • Assess the merit of the project. Remodeling magazine annually publishes a “Cost vs. Value Report” that lists the average cost and return on investment homeowners can expect of various types of projects. If you’re planning to sell your home soon, it may be best to focus on repairs and renovations that will generate the most substantial ROI.
• Hire a contractor. Even avid do-it-yourselfers can sometimes benefit from a contractor’s expertise, particularly for complex tasks. Don’t waste money by trying tough jobs yourself; rely on an experienced contractor who can get supplies for less money and will do the job right the first time. Compare bids from several different contractors and figure out the best value. • Refurbish existing features. Rather than a complete gut and rebuild, figure out where you can revitalize existing fixtures and more. For example, refinishing existing cabinets can save you up to 50 percent compared with the cost of new cabinetry, according to Angi (formerly Angie’s List), a cost comparison and business review resource. • Choose midgrade materials. Certain materials may be all the rage but they come with a higher price tag. Angi reports that granite counters could be $60 to $100 per square foot. However, a composite or laminate that looks like granite and wears well may be $10 to 40 per square foot.

If you live on Long Island, you may head out there for a day at the beach, a five-star dining experience or some shopping, but it isn’t necessarily where you call home. As one of the most sought after and premier luxury real estate markets in the country, it’s no surprise there’s a show that spotlights what it’s like to sell, build and live there. If you haven’t already watched Selling the Hamptons on discovery+, it’s about time you tune in! The show follows six Hamptons-based Nest Seekers real estate agents during the top selling season in the Hamptons. I sat down with J.B. Andreassi and Michael Fulfree, two of those real estate agents who are from Long Island themselves, to learn more about the show, luxury real estate as a whole and their personal lives. J.B. Andreassi is a 31 year old Southampton, NY native. He attended St. Anthony’s High School, where he met Michael Fulfree. He later graduated from Dartmouth College and worked for the National Hockey League before taking up his family legacy and transitioning into real estate. While previously working in real estate, Michael had met the CEO of Nest Seekers, who let him know of an upcoming show about real estate that would be filmed in the Hamptons. Michael learned more and found out they still needed a cast. He later introduced J.B. to the CEO as well and the two decided to be a part of the show, Million Dollar Beach House, which became a hit. Discovery+ eventually started casting for Selling the Hamptons, and being as personable and hardworking as they are, of course J.B. and Michael landed a spot on that show too. “We never thought we’d end up on TV” said Andreassi. Peggy, Mia, Bianca and Kenny are the other four agents who work for the firm and hold a significant role in the show.

Both the guys both had something to say. “We’re showing the beaches, the wineries, the equestrian, the boating, the restaurants that we go to all the time,” said J.B. “From a lifestyle standpoint I think we actually did a very good job representing it.” Michael jumped in adding, “Yeah I mean, I think things are a little more laid back than we probably portray.” They both agreed that the biggest misconception about the Hamptons is the stuffiness. “There are a lot of really good people out here that care about each other,” said Michael. “It’s a really special community.” Want to know more about their personal lives? That’s because recessed lighting is installed into the ceiling, meaning it does not take up any visual space in the room. That can help living rooms feel bigger. Both portable and installed lighting can be used in bedrooms to serve these various functions.
