Key West: Where the Road Ends and Paradise Begins By Kerry Mastrobuoni

S

ome destinations impress us with their beauty; others win us over with their food, culture, and people. For me, Key West checks all those boxes. I keep returning, drawn by the turquoise water, colorful characters, and carefree spirit that seems to exist nowhere else quite like it. Key West isn’t just a destination. It’s a feeling. Getting there is part of the adventure. You can fly directly into Key West International Airport, but I recommend making the drive from Miami at least once. The Overseas Highway carries you across a string of islands, with spectacular blue water stretching in every direction. Along the way, we stumbled upon Robert Is Here in Homestead, a legendary fruit stand that began in 1959 when a six-year-old boy named Robert sold cucumbers beside the road. Today, it’s famous for exotic fruits, local honey, tropical milkshakes and a petting zoo with live music. www.longislandmediagroup.com

Further along, stop at Robbie’s Marina in Islamorada where you can hand-feed the enormous tarpon gathered beneath the dock. It’s unforgettable entertainment, but watch those fingers! We learned that lesson the hard way. Arriving in Key West feels like entering another world. This tiny island, just four miles long and one mile wide, is actually closer to Cuba than Miami. Its history was shaped by shipwreck salvagers, Cuban cigar makers, fishermen, and free spirits. It also became a haven for writers. Ernest Hemingway found inspiration here in the 1930s, and you can tour his former home, now famous for its colony of six-toed cats. Playwright Tennessee Williams made the island his longtime home, while one of my favorite poets, Robert Frost, also spent time here in the winter months. Perhaps they were all drawn to the tropical light and warm sanctuary that make Key West so unforgettable.

As you wander the narrow streets, admire the pastelcolored conch houses, lush gardens, and inviting porches. And watch where you walk! Roosters roam freely, strutting through traffic as if they own the place. In Key West, apparently, they have the right of way! Great food is another part of the island’s personality. Latitudes on Sunset Key offers spectacular waterfront views and an elegant atmosphere. Louie’s Backyard is another favorite of mine, serving oceanfront dining with Caribbeaninspired flavors. Hot Tin Roof offers sophisticated cuisine overlooking the historic harbor. For something more casual, seek out neighborhood bars where conversation flows as freely as the drinks. After dinner, the energy ramps up along famous Duval Street. We always stop at Irish Kevin’s, where live music, hilarious performers, and audience participation make it impossible not to join the fun. This little island certainly knows how to entertain you!

Don’t spend your entire visit on land. Getting out on the water is a must! Explore the backcountry by boat, cruise past mangrove islands, or anchor at a beautiful sandbar. There’s nothing like stepping into crystalclear shallows, swimming in the warm water, and soaking up the sunshine surrounded by all the natural beauty. Key West is history, humor, incredible food, and wonderful people wrapped in tropical sunshine. What more could you ask for? Somehow, no matter how many times I visit, my compass always points me back to Key West. I’d love to hear from you! Share your travel tips, ideas and inspiration at Kerryscompass@ longislandmediagroup.com. Always let your compass lead you somewhere worth remembering.

No visit is complete without the Sunset Celebration at Mallory Square, where artists, musicians, and street performers gather each evening to watch the sun sink into the Gulf.

lower temperatures of fall invite scores of outdoor enthusiasts to don their hiking boots and spend a day snaking their way through wooded areas that range from simple, kid-friendly trails to more challenging hikes designed for seasoned hikers. Trails may be covered in snow in just a few short weeks, making mid- to late fall an ideal time to soak in these stunning sights before the leaves fall.

Fall Activities To Squeeze In Before Winter Arrives

W

inter has its share of devotees, but warmer times of year, like spring, summer and fall, tend to entice people to spend more time outdoors than they might once temperatures dip below 40°F. As fall winds down and winter draws closer, people who love spending time outdoors can look to these quintessential autumn activities to enjoy the outdoors before temperatures drop. Farm-based fun Late fall may no longer qualify as picking season for people who love to pick their own fruit, but come late October and November, there’s still plenty of fun to

be had down on the farm. Farms run the gamut from apple-picking paradises to spots tailor-made for wine enthusiasts, and these locations tend to feature plenty of entertainment throughout fall. Hayrides, live music, tours of the grounds, and food and wine tastings are just some examples of farm-based fun that make for great ways to enjoy the welcoming weather of mid- to late fall. Hiking There may be no more beautiful time of year than fall to spend a day hiking through the woods. The color palette of fall is loaded with bright reds, seasonal oranges and splashes of yellow. The

Festivals Fall is festival season in many areas, with scores of locales hosting seasonal events such as town days and Oktoberfest gatherings. Town celebrations often feature local vendors like restaurants, wineries and breweries, along with plenty of kid-friendly fun like bounce houses and sports clinics. As the season progresses, keep an eye out for popular Oktoberfest events that celebrate Bavarian culture and offer locals a chance to cut a rug and enjoy some hearty cuisine. As October draws to a close, Halloween festivals can make for a fun and costumed day out. Football Sports fans know football season kicks into high gear come October, when high school, college and professional teams all take to the gridiron each weekend. Those with no intention of spending a day battling winter winds in the bleachers can take in a football game during midto late fall before the mercury drops. Be sure to up the entertainment value by tailgating with friends and fellow fans prior to kickoff. Mid- to late fall is a great time to enjoy the great outdoors. A little fresh air before the mercury dips below freezing is a great way to spend weekend afternoons.

Thanksgiving is to avoid preparing more food than necessary. Guests may expect to leave with full bellies, but excessive portions can result in unnecessary waste. Hosts can simplify meal preparation by planning realistic portions and explaining to guests that they want to reduce food waste. Leftovers can also be refrigerated, frozen, or shared with guests. Keep table settings simple. Unless you plan to post photos of the family meal on Instagram, consider skipping elaborate table settings in favor of a simple arrangement. Polishing formal silverware and folding cloth napkins into intricate designs can take time away from meal preparation. A more casual setting allows guests to focus on enjoying a delicious, home-cooked holiday meal.

Simple Ways to Make Thanksgiving Dinner Easier

T

hanksgiving is a much-anticipated and beloved holiday in the United States. Celebrated on the fourth Thursday of November, Thanksgiving offers families and friends an opportunity to gather and break bread together. Food is a major focus of the holiday, which can feel overwhelming for those tasked with hosting the celebration.

dishes can leave little room on the table and may lead to hurt feelings if some contributions go uneaten or remain in the kitchen. Explain your desire to reduce food waste. Another way to simplify

Purchase a premade dessert. It may be tempting to prepare a homemade dessert, but purchasing pies or other treats from a local bakery or grocery store can save valuable time. This approach allows hosts to spend less time in the kitchen and more time enjoying the celebration with family and friends. Hosting Thanksgiving dinner is no small task. However, with a little planning and a few practical adjustments, hosts can simplify meal preparation and enjoy more of the holiday themselves.

Guests may expect traditional Thanksgiving staples, including turkey and mashed potatoes. While these favorites can help guide menu planning, sticking to traditional dishes is not the only way to simplify preparations for this beloved holiday. Accept help, but keep it limited. It’s customary for loved ones invited to Thanksgiving dinner to offer to bring a dish, which can ease the workload for hosts. However, hosts can keep things simple by asking just a few guests to prepare a side dish. Once those requests are covered, politely decline additional offers. Too many www.longislandmediagroup.com

Make This Side Dish The Star On Thanksgiving

F

ood is foremost on the minds of Thanksgiving guests. While food is a big deal on just about every holiday, the meal really takes center stage on Thanksgiving. Although turkey can be a delicious main course, many Thanksgiving diners might admit they anticipate the side dishes more than the turkey. Potatoes, soups, salads and dinner rolls are all competing for space on the Thanksgiving table and can be equally tasty. However, perhaps no side dish is more synonymous with Thanksgiving than stuffing. Though stuffing is sometimes cooked inside the turkey, while others prefer to prepare it in a casserole dish. There’s no shortage of ways to prepare stuffing, and adventurous types might enjoy this recipe for “Stuffin’ Muffins” courtesy of “Lord Honey Traditional Southern Recipes With a Country Bling Twist” (Pelican Publishing) by Chef Jason Smith. In this recipe, stuffing is baked in muffin tins for the perfect portion you can sink your teeth right into.

Directions: Preheat oven to 350 F. Butter a 12-hole muffin tin. In a large skillet, crumble the sausage and cook until halfway done. Add the onions, mushrooms and butter. Cook until tender. In a large mixing bowl, combine the crumbled cornbread and the sausage mixture. Add salt and pepper. Add the sage, onion powder, parmesan cheese, eggs, and broth. Mix with hands until all ingredients are moist but hold together.

Some stores will offer “doorbuster” exclusions that highlight slashed prices and utilize marketing tactics like countdown timers to encourage shoppers to purchase items without doing their research. This is when knowing the true value of items can help you spot a deal or inflated prices that were then marked down. • Limit your stores. If you choose to shop in person on Black Friday, start early in the day and don’t run yourself ragged. If you’re tired, you may not make the best decisions and could end up spending more than your budget allows.

Shopping smart on Black Friday comes down to employing some savvy financial strategies.

What is Plaid Friday?

Consumers are urged to shop locally as much as possible, as local merchants provide distinctive benefits over larger retailers, such as specialized products and superior customer service. Plaid Friday is one such day when communities strongly encourage residents to patronize local businesses. Plaid Friday occurs on the day after Thanksgiving. Many people recognize it as Black Friday, but Plaid Friday focuses on a relaxed and enjoyable shopping experience that emphasizes community and the creativity of local businesses as opposed to the hectic pace of traditional Black Friday shopping. Plaid Friday originated in Oakland in 2009, when it was presented as an alternative to the frenzy of Black Friday. The “plaid” in the name symbolizes the weaving together of small businesses and individuals to form an interconnected community fabric.

According to Town & Country magazine, millions of jelly doughnuts are consumed in Israel throughout Chanukah. Notable Chanukah Traditions

ach year on the twentyfifth day of Kislev, which typically falls during the month of December, adherents of the Jewish faith celebrate the festival of Chanukah. Although Chanukah may not bear the same religious significance as other Jewish holidays, it is a well-known celebration. Chanukah commemorates the rededication of the Temple by the Maccabees in 165 BC after its desecration by the Syrians. Although there was not enough oil left to light the Temple for even one night, lamps remained illuminated for eight straight days and nights. Thus Chanukah is known as the Festival of Lights, which incorporates many unique traditions. Lighting the menorah Perhaps the most visible and important Chanukah tradition www.longislandmediagroup.com

involves the menorah. While traditional Jewish menorahs have seven branches, the Chanukah menorah, known as the hanukkiah, actually has nine branches. There are eight candles and a ninth, which is called the shamash, is used to light the other eight. The menorah is lit each night after sundown. Giving of gelt Chanukah gelt is money given as presents during the festival. It is typically offered to children and sometimes to teachers. Other gifts have now largely replaced the coins once offered, and gelt is sometimes chocolate.

were engaged with their scripture. The tradition of spinning the dreidel endures as a Chanukah tradition. Foods fried in oil The miracle of the burning oil extends to the foods enjoyed during Chanukah. Many of the holiday foods are prepared in oil, including latkes (fried potatoes) and sufganiyot, which are fried, jelly-filled doughnuts.

Although Christmas cookies may be ubiquitous this time of year, cookies often are part of Chanukah traditions as well. Some cookies are cut to look like dreidels or stars. Those who want to incorporate the miracle of oil into their baking can seek recipes that use oil in place of butter in the cookie batters, something that can make them dairy-free and also vegan. Chanukah begins on December 25, 2024, and will last through January 2, 2025. It’s a festive time to embrace many time-honored traditions.

Holiday Crafts For Kids

any people celebrate the holiday season, but perhaps no people enjoy this festive time of year as much as young children. Kids’ eager eyes cannot wait to see homes transformed into winter wonderlands, and kids anxiously count down the days until they can tear into mountains of presents. The weeks leading up to the holidays are among the most exciting of the year. When looking to wrangle kids’ nervous holiday season energy, simple crafts are great at keeping little ones busy while parents tackle holiday responsibilities. These crafty projects can serve as new family traditions or a way to increase the number of holiday keepsakes. rends come and go, and that impermanence can make it hard to predict how certain times of year, including the holiday season, will play out. However, one notable trend in regard to the holiday season that has seemingly withstood the test of time is the popularity of Black Friday among holiday shoppers. But even that dynamic has shifted in the digital age. Though Black Friday remains a big day for retailers, consumers spend more on Cyber Monday (the Monday after Thanksgiving) than they do on Black Friday (the day after Thanksgiving). 441238S111126
