LI Veterans Invited To Free Veteran And Family Resource Day

SEAFORD - SOUTH BAY’S NEIGHBOR NEWSPAPERS - WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 4, 2026 • WWW.LONGISLANDMEDIAGROUP.COM

This Event Enables Veterans, Service Members, and Their Families to Access Free Screenings Speak with Veterans Service Agencies and Learn How to Protect Their Brain Health Long Island veterans, service members, and their families can connect with brain health experts, veterans’

service organizations, and community resources at a free event hosted by the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America (AFA) on Monday, November 9 at the AFA Barbara Rabinowitz Education & Resource Center (149 Schleigel Boulevard, Amityville) from 1 pm to 4 pm. Veterans and their families can register by visiting alzfdn.org/

liveterans or calling 631223-4000. Honor & Thrive: Long Island Veteran & Family Resource Day will enable veterans and their family members to: • Meet with a New York State veterans benefit advisor • Receive free memory screenings, blood pressure screenings, and flu shots provided by Mount Sinai South Nassau • Speak with governmental agencies serving veterans and servicemembers The event will also include two educational presentations where participants can learn from experts and ask questions: • “Healthy Aging for Veterans,” led by Dr. Jeremy Koppel, AFA Medical, Scientific & Memory Screening Advisory Board Member (1:30 pm to 2:30 pm).

• “Connecting Veterans with Services & Support,” a panel discussion with representatives from the New York State Department of Veterans Services, New York State Office for the Aging, and Suffolk & Nassau Counties’ Veterans Service Agencies (2:30 pm to 3:30 pm). Veterans may be at a higher risk for dementia based on their military experiences. A traumatic brain injury (TBI), posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), or being a prisoner of war can all increase the chances of developing dementia, according to the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. The risk of dementia also increases with age. Prioritizing brain-healthy lifestyle choices is an important part of healthy aging. A nutritious diet, regular exercise, getting

How To Help Aging Veterans According to the U.S. Census Bureau’s 2024 American Community Survey, approximately 15.7 million veterans were living in the United States. Veterans make up a significant portion of the nation’s older adult population, with more than 7.7 million veterans aged 65 and older. Military personnel make significant sacrifices to protect the freedoms Americans enjoy each day. Those efforts must never be forgotten, even decades after a veteran’s activeduty service has ended. As veterans age, some may face physical limitations, social isolation,

or other challenges associated with getting older. Others may live with injuries or health concerns connected to their military service. Helping aging veterans is a meaningful way for individuals and communities to express their appreciation. Those interested in supporting veterans can consider the following ideas. Offer your expertise. Working professionals can help aging veterans by providing advice or services free of charge or at a reduced rate. Accountants, for example, might assist with tax preparation, while financial professionals could offer educational

presentations at local veterans’ organizations or community centers about managing finances during retirement. Invite veterans to gatherings. Social connections can be especially valuable as people age. Individuals can invite veterans to holiday celebrations, family meals, game nights or other community gatherings. Simple opportunities to socialize can help older veterans remain connected to their communities and build meaningful relationships. Pitch in around the house. Many older adults face physical limitations

that can make household chores more difficult. Offer to help aging veterans mow the lawn, tend a garden, clean the house, or complete other tasks that may have become challenging. These small gestures can make everyday life easier while showing appreciation for their service. There is no shortage of ways to support aging veterans. Whether through professional services, companionship, or a helping hand around the house, individuals and families can make a meaningful difference in the lives of veterans as they navigate their later years.

proper sleep, staying socially active, learning new things, limiting alcohol, and quitting smoking are all positive lifestyle choices that promote good brain health. Regular memory screenings can help individuals identify potential memory concerns and discuss them with their

healthcare providers. Long Island veterans, service members, and their families can register for Honor & Thrive: Long Island Veteran & Family Resource Day on November 9 by visiting alzfdn.org/ liveterans or calling 631223-4000.

Long Island Coalition Against Bullying Honors 29 School Heroes

The Long Island Coalition Against Bullying (LICAB) honored 29 exceptional educators, administrators, and school staff members from across Nassau and Suffolk counties at its Third Annual Long Island School Hero Awards, held October 19 at The Watermill in Smithtown. Many of the honorees were nominated by their students. The annual awards celebrated individuals who made extraordinary contributions to the lives of students through their compassion, dedication, and commitment to creating safe, supportive, and inclusive learning environments. The honorees represented public and private schools across Long Island and were recognized for going beyond their everyday responsibilities to help students overcome challenges, build confidence, develop meaningful relationships and feel valued within their school communities. “Every student deserves

to have someone in their corner who believes in them, supports them, and helps them navigate the challenges of growing up,” said Joe Salamone, Founder and Executive Director of the Long Island Coalition Against Bullying. “These 29 individuals demonstrated that being a hero doesn’t require a cape or a grand gesture. Sometimes, it’s simply recognizing when a student needs help, taking the time to listen, or making sure a child knows they are not alone. Their impact extends far beyond the classroom.” Established in 2024, the Long Island School Hero Awards recognized the often-unsung contributions of individuals working within Long Island’s school communities. Honorees were nominated by students, parents, and colleagues who witnessed firsthand their dedication to making a positive difference in children’s lives. The awards also highlighted the important role school personnel play

in preventing bullying, addressing student mental health challenges and fostering a culture of kindness and acceptance. “Kids need to feel valued and connected to their school community,” said Dr. Joanne Pisani, Director of Mental Health Services in the Connetquot School District. “They need to feel that people see them as important and that they have people to go to if they’re struggling, especially if somebody is bullying them.” The 29 individuals recognized at the Third Annual Long Island School Hero Awards were: • Tiffany Belferder – Fusion Academy of Long Island • Dr. Stacy Calcanes – East Meadow School District • Michelle Champlin – Deer Park School District • Kristin Corso – Commack School District • Maria Corso – Smithtown School

District • Carla DeVito – Deer Park School District • Kelly Fitzpatrick – B.E.S.T. Learning Center • Michael Florence – Hauppauge School District • Stephen Goldberg – Great Neck School District • Christina Helbock – Brentwood School District • Gloria Jaramillo – Brentwood School District • Jonathan Kaplan – Woodward Children’s Center • Dr. Jillian Kelly – Carle Place School District • Jamie Keuthen – Lynbrook School District • Kathryn Miedl – Seaford School District • Josseline Morales – Farmingdale School District • Lori Neazer – Harmony Heights School • Ancy Paulose –

Lindenhurst School District • Emma Peppe – Smithtown School District • Dr. Joanne Pisani – Connetquot School District • Kayla Pollenz – Oyster Bay-East Norwich School District • Paul Reilly – Great Neck School District • William Riedel – Elwood School District • Dr. Christopher Smalley – Hauppauge School District • Jennifer Thearle – Plainedge School District • Dr. Benedict Tieniber – Lynbrook School District • Lauren Timoney – Seaford School District • Lauren Vega – Farmingdale School District • Brooke Yonick – Bayport-Blue Point School District The awards ceremony brought together members

of Long Island’s educational community to recognize the honorees and celebrate the importance of compassion, mentorship, and positive relationships in schools. Proceeds from the event supported LICAB’s antibullying school partnership programs, which provide educational resources, presentations, and support to students, educators, and families across Long Island. About the Long Island Coalition Against Bullying The Long Island Coalition Against Bullying (LICAB) is dedicated to emphasizing the importance of bullyfree communities on Long Island through education, increased awareness, and therapeutic outlets. LICAB works with students, families, schools, and communities to provide resources, programming, and support designed to address bullying and promote kindness, inclusion, and respect.
