The Arthritis Foundation invites Long Islanders to lace up their sneakers, don their festive holiday gear and join the movement to conquer arthritis at the annual Jingle Bell Run, happening Saturday, December 6th at Hofstra University in Hempstead.
The Jingle Bell Run is a spirited, family-friendly 5K fundraising event that brings the community together to champion the Arthritis Foundation’s mission: fighting for a cure and championing the fight against the nation’s leading cause of disability. Participants are encouraged to wear holiday-themed costumes, tie jingle bells to their shoes and celebrate the season while supporting a meaningful cause. The run begins at 10:30 am!
“All proceeds from the Jingle Bell Run support cutting-edge research, advocacy, and lifechanging resources for the more than 60 million Americans — including 300,000 children — living with arthritis,” said Alexis Stone, Executive Director, Arthritis Foundation, NYC. “It’s a fun, festive way to make a difference in the lives of those affected by arthritis right here in our community.”
The event is locally presented by Northwell Orthopedics and it welcomes runners, walkers, teams and corporate sponsors. Participants can register individually or as part of a team, and fundraising incentives are available for top fundraisers. Through the generosity of the Church of St. Joseph, on Sunday, December 14th at 7:00 PM the renowned St. Joseph’s Choir and friends will once again present the traditional FREE concert at St. Joseph’s Church in Babylon Village. The renowned St. Joseph Choir has presented a yearly December concert for over 25 years raising more than $100.000 for the benefit of the Mercy INN Soup Kitchen in Wyandanch. They will perform Handel’s MESSIAH and Bach’s Magnificat and more preceded by a moving candlelight procession. They are directed by Dr. Marie Drohan and accompanied by soloists, the Sophisticated Strings, trumpets, flute and harpsichord. The church will be in darkness at 7:00 so early arrival is recommended. Deer Park High School celebrated 19 outstanding students at its annual Breakfast for Champions on Oct. 29, honoring those who exemplify the very best of the school community. Students, families, teachers and administrators gathered in the high school’s library for a morning recognizing students who
have consistently strived to do their personal best, highlighting a diverse range of achievements from character and academic excellence to leadership, creativity, resilience, compassion and citizenship.
Honorees were recognized across 17 school department categories as well as
principal’s and teacher’s awards: athletics (Alyssa Wise), business (Manaal Irfan), English Language Arts/library (Ryan Hughes), English as a new language (Juairiah Tayaba), family and consumer science (David Tran), fine arts (Reanissa Norton), guidance (Kayla Cruz), health (Thomas Iovine), math/
computer science (Caiden Boltz), performing arts (Jack Hayden), physical education (Sean Donovan), science (Breana Troiano), social studies (Lauren Marable), technology (Meagan Sinclair) and world languages (Liliana Morales), as well as the Principal’s Award (Caleb Pierre) and Teacher’s Award (Glenn Calautti).
“This wonderful annual celebration really recognizes the best part of students,” Principal Charlie Cobb said. “There’s a multitude of reasons we are acknowledging them. This is not just about an academic achievement or earning a score on a certain test, these awards are about our students being outstanding young
individuals, and we want to congratulate all of them.”
The uplifting morning included a performance by the talented string quintet of Payton Barr (cello), Emily Dong (violin), Amaiyah Elysee (viola), Maxwell Ferguson (cello) and Ryan Lin (violin), adding a special touch to this cherished fall tradition.
The excitement of the holiday season is palpable. Many people look forward to this time of year so they can deck their homes in lights and find gifts that will delight friends and family.
The spirit of giving that pervades the holiday season extends to Giving Tuesday, which comes on the heels of the busiest shopping days of the year.
According to the Giving Tuesday website, Giving Tuesday is a movement that “reimagines a world built upon shared humanity and generosity.”
Organizers feel that generosity is the avenue through which humanity can collectively strengthen its social fabric. Those who would like to harness the spirit of charitable giving can explore these ways to give back.

Giving Tuesday started with a team from the Belfer Center for Innovative & Social Impact in New York City. In November 2012, these individuals implored nonprofits, influencers, and businesses to inspire

the country. Petition local city councils for a portion of green spaces to devote to a community garden to grow produce for those who may need it. Doing so can foster a sense of camaraderie in communities.
Caremongering began as a community-led social movement to address health and social needs during the COVID-19 pandemic in Canada. Caremongering is designed to help vulnerable people and can include anything from grocery shopping for those with mobility issues to virtually or physically socializing with others to combat social isolation. Those who want to caremonger can do many other things, like run emergency errands or help with childcare.
Areas of the southern United States experienced extreme devastation with the one-two punch of hurricanes Helene and Milton in early October. Natural disasters can displace families and push individuals to the brink as supplies become scarce. It is likely recovery efforts in areas wiped out by these storms will take months, underscoring the importance of continued support via donations and volunteer efforts.
Getting involved in Giving Tuesday is easier than one may imagine. Let this day sow the seeds of generosity for the entire year.
