Reading with a Purpose Science and literacy came together in Regina Birney’s first-grade classroom at Lockhart Elementary School in the Massapequa School District.

In an effort to have students do more

nonfiction reading, classroom libraries are filled with books on variety of subjects. Ms. Birney’s first-graders selected books about animals, the weather and other sciencerelated topics. After they finished reading, they had

to recount and write down two facts they learned.

The assignment also helped the students improve their vocabulary as they were able to use the pictures to comprehend new words.

Two Friday night trains will have slightly adjusted schedules (the 11:22 PM eastbound train from Penn Station will leave 2 minutes later than usual and will have adjusted stopping times to Jamaica, and the 11:26 PM westbound train from Babylon will arrive at Woodside 1 minute later and at Penn Station 2 minutes later than usual)

The BRAVE program, Beliefs in the Rights and Values of Everyone, is an important component of the seventh-grade health curriculum at Berner Middle School in the Massapequa School District.

All seventh-graders receive three days of BRAVE instruction during

the year led by social worker Marisa Boulukos.

Students understand the legal aspects of the Dignity for All Students Act and how they can protect themselves and others, as well as learning who they can turn to for help within the schools. The purpose of BRAVE is to show students how to be leaders and

role models within their school, and how to stand up for others in need.

Each three-day workshop includes a mock court case about a student who has been bullied.

The seventh-graders are assigned roles including the judge, attorneys, plaintiff, defendant, witnesses and jury.
