NORTH MASSAPEQUA - SOUTH BAY’S NEIGHBOR NEWSPAPERS - WEDNESDAY DECEMBER 18, 2013 • www.southbaysneighbor.com

In the true holiday spirit, readers, employees and editors of Full Throttle Magazine gathered hundreds of toys and gifts that were then donated to Stony Brook Children’s Hospital on Sunday, December 8th. Roaring down Nicolls Road in the cold weather, over 50 Long Island motorcycle riders led by

For more than 10 years, EDP Dental Plan of Ronkonkoma has provided Long Islanders with an affordable dental care plan. EDP developed a cost savings program that is available to anyone. EDP’s lowcost plan saves its members money on all dental procedures, from cleanings and exams to implants and braces. The discounts are given to the patient up front at the time of treatment to make it simple WBAB’s ‘Fingers’ and years in efforts to make for the member to use. One week. Seven days. One hundred sixty eight hours. (We won’t get into minutes and seconds – you get the idea.) This is precisely how much time remains before Christmas. And with the virtual countdown comes that age-old holiday anxiety, the mad rush to finish writing out the greeting cards, shopping for gifts, wrapping, cleaning, cooking, baking… whatever your traditions call for in the race to conjure that yearly sense of merriment. Right. The holiday spirit. That is what all the fuss

is about, after all. Lest we forget the reason for all the racing around, the endless “To Do” lists, the exorbitant credit card bills… all for a day or two of celebration with family and friends, neighbors and loved ones. Seems like an awful lot of effort doesn’t it? This is why, when everyone else is busy ripping down the Christmas decorations on December 26th, I say wait. Savor it a little longer. Extend the festivities. You put all that time and effort into preparing for the occasion – might as well enjoy it as long as you can.

(Note: All remnants of Santa Claus should be removed by July. No exceptions.) Of course, all of this is irrelevant to those who start their Christmas shopping in January and are finished decorating by Halloween. Seriously folks – enjoy one season, and one holiday, at a time. What’s the big rush? This time of year is not one long list to be accomplished in as little time as humanly possible; it is made up of moments to be cherished, memories to reflect upon and add to with each passing year. Take a deep breath, take lots of pictures – and enjoy.

sole and opt for a heavy treaded shoe with a flat bottom. TIP #2: Accessorize to see and be seen. Wear sunglasses so that you can see in the reflective light of the snow. Also, wear a bright coat or scarf so that drivers can easily see you. TIP #3: Plan ahead. While walking on snow or ice on sidewalks or

want to be sure you can hear approaching traffic and other noises. Avoid listening to music or engaging in conversation that may prevent you from hearing oncoming traffic or snow removal equipment. TIP #5: Anticipate ice. Be weary of thin sheets of ice that may appear as wet pavement (black ice). Often ice will appear in the morning, in shady spots or where the sun shines during the day and melted snow refreezes at night. TIP #6: Walk steps slowly. When walking down steps, be sure to grip handrails firmly and plant your feet securely on each step. TIP #7: Enter a building carefully. When you get to your destination such as school, work, shopping center, etc., be sure to look at the floor as you enter the building. The floor may be wet with melted snow and ice. TIP #8: Be careful when you shift your weight. When stepping off a curb or getting into a car, be careful since shifting your weight may cause an imbalance and result in a fall. TIP #9: Avoid taking shortcuts. Shortcuts are a good idea if you are in a hurry, but may be a bad idea if there is snow and ice on the ground. A shortcut path may be treacherous because it is likely to be located where snow and ice removal is not possible. TIP #10: Look up. Be careful about what you walk under. Injuries also can result from falling snow/ice as it blows, melts, or breaks away from awnings, buildings, etc. Following these tips will help ensure that you survive the snow and ice season safely. For more snow and ice removal tips, visit SIMA.

At the middle and high school level, powerful lessons on how the disease is contracted and what students can do to protect themselves are presented by student peer educators in an engaging and interactive way, under the guidance of physical education/health certified teacher Michael La Bella. Students learn important information about how the disease spreads and are given resources, such as where to get tested. On the elementary level, students in the lower grades are taught basic hygiene practices and those in the upper grades learn about how HIV/AIDS is a difficult disease to contract and how to be compassionate to those infected. The lessons are reinforced with a take-home activity to facilitate discussions in the home. To spread awareness among the community, a public viewing of panels from the World AIDS quilt is hosted at Massapequa High been impacted. “There is no cure…this stays with you School where peer educators are on hand to answer for the rest of your life,” they warned. questions for visitors. Life-saving messages of exercising good judgment, open communication and responsible behavior during intimate relationships were clearly stressed to freshmen at Massapequa High School Ames Campus at one of two assemblies led by speakers from Love Heals, the Alison Gertz Foundation for AIDS Education. The assembly was one of several statemandated, age-appropriate lessons conducted during the district’s AIDS Awareness Week, which is held in close proximity to World AIDS Day, December 1st. The speakers — one whose diagnosis spiraled him into years of destructive behavior involving drugs and alcohol, and the other whose meticulous practices about getting tested regularly could not save him from a drunken encounter that changed his life forever — opened up the eyes of their adolescent audience about the harsh reality of living with a disease that has no cure. Now both living relatively healthy lives, thanks to advances in medication, they said that medication comes at a price, “I suffered severe allergic reactions to powerful drugs... the virus also develops resistance to the drugs so you

PRAYER TO THE BLESSED VIRGIN (Never know to fail) Oh most beautiful flower of Mt. Carmel, fruitful vine, splendor of heaven, blessed Mother of the Son of God, Immaculate Virgin, assist me in my necessity. Oh Star of the Sea, help me and show me herein you are my mother. Oh Mary, Mother of God, Queen of Heaven and Earth, I humbly beseech you from the bottom of my heart, to succor me in this necessity. There are none that can withstand your power. Oh show me herein you are my mother. Oh Mary, conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to thee. (3x) Holy Mother, I place this cause in you hands. (3x) Holy Spirit, You who solve all problems, light all roads to that I can attain my goal. You, that I never want to be separated from you in eternal glory. Thank you for your mercy toward me and mine. Amen. The person must say this prayer 3 consecutive days. After 3 days, the request will be granted. This prayer must be published after the favor is granted. TT

STUDENTS HELPING SANTA - Students at Grace Day School volunteered to lend a helping had to Santa as he posed for photos at the annual Breakfast with Santa held Saturday, December 7th. The boys did a fantastic job managing photos with Santa for over 50 families. They spent the morning helping youngsters from the community pose with Santa and directing parents to a photo-op station to use their smart phones and cameras to capture the magical moment. The boys did numerous tasks including running wires, implementing safety precautions, crowd guidance and making sure each youngster left with a candy cane and a smile. Santa couldn’t ask for a better team of helpers!

Unqua Elementary School sixth graders from Amy Kanavy-Curry’s classes analyzed art from various Paleolithic caves and then put their knowledge into action by drawing their own sketches. “The artwork was modeled after our analysis of caves and was intended to be as authentic as possible,” Kanavy-Curry

said. “We had fun, got dirty and learned about Paleolithic people.” Before participating in the culminating activity, students studied and identified the major differences between Paleolithic and Neolithic times as part of the sixthgrade curriculum, which spans from the beginning of time to the Middle Ages. Included in that study is

the examination of cave art — one of the few primary sources of prehistory. Students read excerpts from “Painters of the Caves,” by Patricia Lauber, viewed the official website of the Lascaux Cave in France, watched a virtual tour of caves and identified theories behind the art, as well as the colors, styles and subjects.

It is an exciting time at St. John the Baptist Diocesan High School as the top student-athletes are selecting their colleges. The SJB community is proud to celebrate the accomplishments of many of its student-athletes. The following athletes signed letters of intent: Caroline Herrera, Deer Park resident – Girls Volleyball – NYIT Sophia Evangelista, Massapequa resident – Softball – NYIT Morgan Jaycox, Amityville resident – Girls

Lacrosse– Marist College Kaitlyn Montalbano, West Islip resident Girls Lacrosse –Towson University Paige O’Neill, Amityville resident - Girls Lacrosse-Bentley University The National Letter of Intent (NLI) is a document used by the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) to indicate a student athlete’s commitment to participating in interscholastic athletics in the United States. “As AD, It’s a very proud

moment when you realize that your student- athletes have achieved their goals. I’m overjoyed for them, proud of their coaches, and feel privileged to have played a small part in the process. They have given us so much, and my hope for them going forward is that they follow their dreams and are successful at the next level. They always know SJB is their home and are always welcomed back to share their experiences”, said Lorraine Bouklas, Girls Athletic Director.
