Regent Tilles read to the class the book, Where the Sidewalk Ends by Shel Silverstein and taught the students poetry complete with animated gestures in a moment he called “one of the best parts of my job.”

Prior to visiting the classroom, Regent Tilles sat down with Superintendent Lucille F. Iconis, the district’s K-12 English Curriculum Associate Kevin Harrington, Fairfield Principal Lori Dano and Assistant Principal Kristi Gerhard, as well as Raskin, to discuss the latest issues in education, including those centered on the Common Core Learning Standards.

New York State Regent Roger Tilles shared poetry and conversation with Fairfield Elementary School sixth-graders when he came to personally congratulate their teacher Glenna Raskin for a job well done.

Raskin was named a 2015 Educator of Excellence by the New York State English Council for her outstanding skills as an English language arts teacher.

After Regent Tilles greeted the students and explained what his job is, the students eagerly shared their most recent writing assignments based on the book Odd Boy Out by Don Brown, in which they explored themes of failure, growth, survival and resiliency.

They were also quick to answer any questions Regent Tilles had about what they learned from the assignment.

Men can do Christmas shopping for 25 relatives on December 24th in 25 minutes.

A truer statement has never been made. One of two things happens when men make their one trip

to the store each year – they either A) pick out something “useful” like an appliance – toaster, vacuum, the big-screen TV they always wanted; or B) buy everything in sight to make up for their lack of shopping prowess during the rest of the year.

Once the purchases are made, there’s the small matter of gift-wrapping.

Some men don’t even attempt the impossible and instead settle for a large bow on its own; others give it a whirl and wind up with a mass of crumpled wrapping paper, covered in tape, with only about 75% of the box actually, you know, wrapped.

Talent, indeed.

I used to think it was just my father who waited until Christmas Eve to shop, until I joined him one year and witnessed firsthand the wall-to-wall lines of men with a similar problem – how to complete all their shopping and still make it home in time for the holiday dinner.

So, this Christmas Eve, if you happen to be out making some last minute purchases, don’t stress out – those men standing on line next to you are just getting started.

- Legislator James D. Kennedy presented an award to Zachary Arnold of Troop 660 in Massapequa for recently receiving the distinguished rank of Eagle Scout. Zachary’s Eagle Scout project was removing graffiti and trimming trees and bushes to make it easier for hikers to walk in Nassau County’s Tackapausha Preserve. He also painted “blazes” on trees along a five-mile trail in the preserve so that hikers will be able to follow the path. In addition, he corrected old markers which were painted with the wrong color, shape or direction.

On Tuesday, November 17th, the presentation of the Amelia Earhart Award to Cadet Captain Jared Del Orfano Jared Del Orfano, who is a member of the Nassau Cadet Squadron 8, Civil Air Patrol, U.S. Air Force Auxiliary, was held.

The award was presented

by NYS Assemblyman

David McDonough. This award, the third milestone award in the Civil Air Patrol Cadet Program, is earned by just 5% of Cadets nationwide.

C/Capt. Jared Del Orfano is a former Squadron Commander, has served on the staff of the New York Wing Encampment twice,

is the current Long Island Group Cadet Advisory Council Chairperson, and participates in many community service activities.

A student pilot, Jared earned his solo wings in July 2015.

Rallying the Community For the third consecutive year, Massapequa High School Sophomore Veronica Wetzel organized a holiday food drive in her community that will not only provide a Thanksgiving meal to hundreds of families in need, but will also show these families, who have been hit the hardest by the challenging economy, just how much they are cared for.

Wetzel doesn’t take anything for granted.

While she enjoys a big Thanksgiving dinner with her family every year, she knows that there are plenty of people who are far less fortunate – even in her own community. That’s why the 10th grader organizes an annual food drive to benefit her church’s food pantry. And with the help of her generous neighbors, it’s always a success. This year, the teen collected enough food to feed at least 200 families.

“I just collect the food,” said Wetzel modestly. “It’s my neighbors who were amazingly generous. “Some families donated several grocery bags of food or crates of canned soup. One neighbor donated bags of food AND a 20-pound bag of rice! I was blown away by the support and compassion my neighbors showed.” Wetzel added that one family even included a

recipe in its donation bag. “It was awesome!” a positive impact on our community.”

No matter how big or small the donation, each one One week before the November 21st collection, Wetzel helped make a positive impact. And Rosemary Graziano, went door-to-door to the 400 homes within a half-mile director of the Church of St. William the Abbot Roman radius of her Ensign Drive home, and dropped a flier in each mailbox. The flier provided a list of non-perishable food ideas that could help make a Thanksgiving dinner for a family in need. One week later, with help from her father Ralph Wetzel, she again went door-to-door, collecting shopping bags and cartons full of food, which they piled into the family SUV. “It’s so heart-warming to see the neighbors come together,” said Susan Wetzel, Veronica’s mother. “In the week leading up to the collection, we even found bags of food on our front steps because some people were afraid they would forget to put out the bags the following Saturday. That’s how committed they were to supporting Veronica’s effort.”

Village of Massapequa Park recently held Community Counseling Center’s Annual Massapequa Park Turkey Trot. All proceeds the Annual Christmas Tree Lighting and Menorah Ceremony. Pictured with the Town from this 5K run/walk benefit YES Community Counseling Center.

Officials are Village Trustees and some of the Town’s younger residents who bundled up and showed up to see Massapequa Park’s Christmas tree and Menorah being lit to kick off the festive season.

YES DONATION - This November, Massapequa Lacrosse Club generously donated bountiful Thanksgiving food baskets to YES Community Counseling Center. The baskets were distributed to families in need within the community so that they could enjoy a traditional Thanksgiving dinner with all the trimmings. Many thanks go out to the members of the Massapequa Lacrosse Club for their community spirit and generosity!

COURT OF HONOR CEREMONY - The Eagle Scout Court of Honor Ceremony for George M. Rozea of Boy Scout Troop 776, Massapequa, was recently held at Presbyterian Community Church in Massapequa. Supervisor John Venditto and Councilman Joseph Pinto are pictured presenting George with a citation commending him for his dedication to helping the community that led him to earn the rank of Eagle Scout.
