This includes members of the class of 2016, as well as current seniors.

A total of 126 students have been named AP Scholars, who were recognized for having received scores of 3 or higher on at least three Advanced Placement exams.

It’s funny how many different forms the term “friendship” can take on these days. Gone is the time when having a new “best friend” every year of elementary school was the norm, replaced instead by a handful of fairly close friends and an infinite number of what can only be classified as acquaintances; those you may travel in similar circles with but, once the circle is broken, severed is the superficial connection forged as well.

Even among those close friends, there are breakdowns.

There are those who you may only see sporadically to grab dinner or catch a movie with, yet when you do get together, it’s like no time has elapsed at all. Then there are the friends you embark on daylong

adventures with, aimlessly wandering the streets of New York City, the beaches of Long Island and everything in between. These are the days of memories made, of endless photographs snapped… the days you will fondly recall years from now, and smile.

I recently came across a quote: “Photographs are proof that once, even if just for a heartbeat, everything was perfect.” Not only does it speak to my personal love of photography as a whole, but to that notion of reflecting upon moments and savoring them.

EdCamp Long Island is coming to the Massapequa School District, which will host this participant-driven professional development conference for teachers, administrators, parents, students, board of education and community members on Saturday, October 1st.

The third annual event will be held from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Alfred G. Berner Middle School, 50 Carman Mill Road. EdCamp follows an “unconference” model in which participants come together to network, share and learn. More than 6,500 students auditioned for this honor last spring at solo and ensemble festivals throughout the state. In late August, approximately 890 students were selected for NYSSMA’s All-State music conference.

Three Massapequa

students have performed their way into the National Association for Music Education’s 2016 AllNational Honor Ensembles, setting a new musical milestone for the district.

Camryn Buonamassa (Alto 1), Frank Sacino (Tenor 2) and Luciana Vernola (Alto 2) will be among the 670 talented high-school music students from across the country to participate at a gala concert on November 13th at the Gaylord Texan Resort Hotel and Convention Center in Grapevine, Texas.

The three have previously earned spots in the NYSSMA All-State Chorus. They will participate in a choir of 350 students at the NAfME festival.

Dr. David Gaines, the district’s K-12 curriculum associate for music, stated that “these musicians are exceptionally talented and we are proud that their commitment and dedication to their music has raised the achievement bar to a new level in Massapequa.”

Massapequa Public Library

Seniors at Massapequa High School participated in a virtual history lesson as they learned about the September 11th, 2001 terrorist attacks during a video conference with the Manhattan-based September 11th Tribute Center.

It was a unique lesson for the students, who were 2 years old or younger when the attacks occurred and, unlike their teachers or parents, have no direct recollections of the day. On September 9th, seniors in Laura Siegel’s government classes gathered in the library, where the video conference was set up using a Smart Board.

Sophia Prashad, a program associate with the Tribute Center, took the students through a slideshow as she discussed both the 1993 and 2001 terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center, the 15-year process to clear debris and rebuild the site, the impact of the

attacks today, and the health effects on rescuers.

She also talked about the September 11th museum that was created, and the memorials in place to honor victims, including how the footprints of the Twin Towers were turned into reflective pools.

The students also heard from Ann, the widow of a New York City firefighter who died while rescuing people from one of the towers. She spoke of her “personal loss in the midst of an international tragedy,” and how she now volunteers with the Tribute Center.

“Her willingness to be so forthcoming with her story of personal loss, and her dedication to providing the students with an inspirational message at the conclusion of the video conference will be valued by our students,” said Brian Trapani, the district’s curriculum associate for social studies. “Her story, and this experience,

should provide our students with a sense of understanding September 11th, 2001, national pride, empathy and dedication to go forward as active citizens.”

The video conference was coordinated by Siegel and librarian Jill O’Connor, and was an opportunity for students to not only learn about the events and historical significance of 9/11, but also interact with people who can help them truly understand the personal loss so many people felt on that day, and the days and years that followed.

The high school began the day with a commemorative announcement and moment of silence.

Students throughout the district were encouraged to wear red, white and blue, and teachers in grades 5-12 led discussions in social studies classes which focused on service and sacrifice.

Nearly 7,000 students in the Massapequa School District headed back to the classroom with new backpacks, school supplies and a new focus on learning. Students in grades 1-12 returned on September 6th while kindergartners, in keeping with Massapequa tradition, started the following day.

Students greeted each other with hugs and high-fives as parents snapped photos to capture their children’s first-day moments. Students said they looked forward to settling into their new classrooms, meeting their teachers, reuniting with friends and, most importantly, learning.

“It’s wonderful to see our schools buzzing with excitement as we welcome

back our students and staff,” said Superintendent Lucille Iconis. “Everyone is filled with anticipation and hope for success, and, in working with our parents and our community, we look forward to achieving that success for all students with the vast array of opportunities and support our district has to offer.”

The district started the year with 51 new staff members, a reorganized administrative staff and new security vestibules in each building to provide an extra layer of safety.

New programs include third-grade Spanish, MakerSpaces for fourththrough sixth-graders with tools such as 3-D printers, and expanded high school course offerings including Advanced Placement

Capstone, AP Computer Science Principles and Mandarin Chinese 4.

Members of the Class of 2029 settled into their classrooms for the first time on September 7th and were greeted warmly by their teachers. “I love making new friends,” said Birch Lane kindergarten teacher Tara Mathers, who has made hundreds of “best friends” in her 15 years in the district.

Parents of kindergartners stayed for the Boo Hoo Breakfast after sending their little ones off to school. For parents looking to take an active role in their child’s education, the first few weeks of the school year are filled with back-to-school nights and PTA meetings.
