Engineering Conference Young women from the Massapequa School District who excel in math and science broadened their knowledge of engineering and computer science by participating in the second annual “Introduce a Girl to Engineering” event at New York Institute of Technology (NYIT) Old Westbury Campus.

Hosted during National Engineers Week, the event aims to increase awareness and interest in STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) fields in middle and high school young women by showcasing the successes and accomplishments of NYIT students, faculty, and alumni from its School of Engineering and Computing Sciences

The Week That Was Let’s try something different for a change. Instead of waiting until the eleventh hour to compose my thoughts for the week, I’ve decided to jot down a bit each day, with hopes that these random ramblings will gel into a somewhat coherent theme.

Sounds just abstract enough to work.

Monday…

The weekly “fresh start” we all seek, yet are often disappointed by about 10 minutes into. For me, the perfect opportunity to catch up on the avalanche of e-mails that have surely accumulated over the weekend, while methodically trying to plan the remainder of the week’s activities. A quick scan of social media says everyone is still buzzing about last night’s

highly anticipated season premiere of Game of Thrones.

Me, I’m still working my way through the series of five larger-than-life books.

Tuesday…

Into the fray again, trying to keep pace with the workflow in preparation for my day off on Friday, yet another reason to get a jump on that column.

Nothing but rain and clouds outside, which makes for a decidedly dreary disposition.

But, I suppose such an atmosphere is far more conducive to accomplishing tasks on the endless To Do list.

Better not to be tempted by the sun’s rays, beckoning you to take an extended lunch.

Wednesday…

Yet another lovely day in the neighborhood, or so I briefly glimpsed on my way into the office. Word is it’s 66º and sunny. One of these days, this

kind of weather will coincide with a weekend. Maybe. But alas, here I sit at my keyboard, typing away at the local community news and events.

Summer fun in the sun can’t come soon enough.

Thursday…

The eleventh hour. One day short of a deadline; for me, tomorrow will be spent helping to run the Society of Professional Journalists’ Annual Region I Conference, this year hosted by Hofstra University and sponsored by our very own Press Club of Long Island. A full schedule of panels and lectures by some of the region’s finest journalists is on tap, a muchneeded reminder of why it was I became involved in this field to begin with.

And so, I’m off. Stay tuned for a full recap of the conference next week!

McKenna In Action

The McKenna Elementary School sixth graders participated in the Maglev Competition held at the Cradle of Aviation Museum. The students used math, science, and technology principles to design and create magnetic levitation vehicles to compete in one of five categories.

The McKenna students all entered the gravity contest. They constructed a vehicle that traveled the

length of the track under the force of gravity. The students had to determine the best vehicle design to

carry the most pennies (passengers), at the fastest speed while using the least amount of magnets.

Since the inception of Stamp Out Hunger in 1992, over 1.3 billion pounds of food have been collected by letter carriers in the United States. Locally, last year Long Islanders donated more than 326,000 pounds of food and this year, Island Harvest expects a similar amount to be collected by letter carriers on 2,219 carrier

routes across Long Island.

“The most trusted federal employees, U.S. Postal Service letter carriers are routinely involved in many community outreach initiatives, and often, form very close relationships with their customers,” said Walter Barton, President, NALC. “It is this connection they have within their communities that compels them to want to help make a difference.”

Long Islanders are being asked to set out non-perishable food by their mailboxes on May 9th, which will then be picked up by their letter carriers while delivering the day’s mail. The letter carriers will then deliver their collected food to an Island Harvest “Stamp Out Hunger” warehouse – where an army of volunteers will sort food, to be distributed immediately to Island Harvest’s network of 570 member agencies, including food pantries and soup kitchens throughout Long Island.

Wilma and Betty, two senior Labrador mixes, spent several months at Little Shelter this past winter.

These two wonderful, friendly dogs had lost their home and were living at a town shelter when Little Shelter stepped up and rescued them. They were so attached to one another that Little Shelter knew they had to try to find them placement in the same home; they simply wouldn’t have been happy otherwise.

Now, finding a home for one large, senior dog is

Little Shelter was asked to bring two dogs to the Smithtown branch as an added attraction to the collection that was being taken. You guessed it, Betty and Wilma were the dogs in attendance, and those girls know how to work a crowd! In fact, Betty and Wilma had recently participated in a dog fashion show where they were a big hit and a crowd favorite.

The TFCU event turned out to be a special day for these two senior dogs, for it was at this event that Betty and Wilma met their new family.

One of TFCU’s wonderful patrons saw these girls in the branch and there was an instant connection.

After the event, the family visited Wilma and Betty at Little Shelter and decided to adopt them! What a wonderful ending for both the family and for these great dogs.

Learn To Skate This Spring Town of Oyster Bay residents are invited to “Learn To Skate” this spring by registering for skating lessons at the Town of Oyster Bay’s Ice Skating Center, located at 1001 Stewart Avenue in Bethpage.

The ice skating center offers skating classes for residents interested in learning to skate or in sharpening their skating abilities all throughout the year. Registration for Series 5 (May 2nd through June 26th) will begin on April 18th. Those interested can register at the rink, online (www.

The “Learn To Skate” program offers group skating lessons to beginners through advanced levels. Skaters are paired based on age and skill, ranging from pre-school and basic skills through advanced levels. The program is eight weeks in length with the exception of Sunday

For residents, the fee is $135 for the session. For non-residents, the fee is $175. The North Massapequa Fire Department’s Engine Company 3 recently held a dedication ceremony for its new heavy rescue unit 664.

The ceremony, which included district officials, department members, the clergy and invited guests from the community, took place on a beautiful Sunday afternoon behind the North Massapequa Fire Department’s Station 2 building on Hicksville Road.

The truck bears

a commemorative plaque in honor of late Commissioner and ExCaptain John J. Erickson, a 42-year member of the North Massapequa Fire Department and Friendship Engine Company 3, who was widely respected throughout the fire service and the community.

The ceremony included a champagne wet down conducted by Erickson’s wife, Lucille, and son, Richard, who is an ExChief of the Department.

On Saturday, April 25th, the Town of Oyster Bay, the North Oyster Bay Baymen’s Association (NOBBA) and Friends of the Bay will, once again, join forces to sponsor the annual Oyster Bay Harbor Fall Cleanup Day, according to Town Councilman Anthony Macagnone.

For over twenty years, Town employees and volunteers have rolled up their sleeves and completed a thorough cleanup of beaches and shoreline areas along Oyster Bay harbor. All day, people walk along the shoreline collecting debris, picking up trash, and even working from boats, cleaning up trash and discarded boats.

This annual Cleanup Day is an inspiration to residents, to help preserve

the precious ecology of one of the Town’s crown jewels, Oyster Bay Harbor.

Volunteers are being sought to participate in the cleanup, which will run from 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Individuals and groups who are interested can get further information by calling the Town’s Department of Environmental Resources at 516.677.5853. Volunteers are also welcome to sign up the day of the event.

The central meeting place will be Theodore Roosevelt Memorial Park launching ramps, Larrabee Avenue, Oyster Bay. By the end of each year, tons of paper, food, plastics and other trash are left on beaches or dumped overboard from recreational and

commercial vessels.

Contrary to what people may believe, debris does not immediately disintegrate, but actually takes weeks, months or even years. The longer this litter remains on our shorelines, the greater the damage will be to the environment.

If you swim, boat or fish in Oyster Bay Harbor, or just want to help protect and enhance the beauty and environmental integrity of this beautiful waterway, please join on April 25th. If you can’t stay for the entire day, even a couple of hours will make a difference. Cleanup events like this will help to preserve the environment for your enjoyment and the enjoyment of generations to come.

Sharing A Craft Educator turned children’s author Phil Bildner visited East Lake Elementary School to demonstrate how picture books and chapter books are created.

Bildner published several picture books pertaining to sports and historical fiction, including “Shoeless Joe and Black Betsy,” “The Shot Heard ‘Round the World,” and “The Unforgettable Season,” and his chapter books, “Sluggers!” have been on “The New York Times” bestsellers list.

Using some of his works as examples, Bildner traced

the life of a text from idea to publication, sharing rough drafts, thumbnail sketches, editorial letters, sample layouts, and corrected proofs. He also celebrated the illustrations, focusing on the process and drawing parallels between the work of the author and the illustrator.

Throughout his presentation, he incorporated his skills as a teacher in order to make a variety of real worldclassroom connections.

Bildner, who grew up in Jericho, experienced careers in teaching and law before becoming a

writer. After earning a political science degree from John Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland, he continued his education at New York University School of Law and began practicing law at a Manhattan law firm.

After one year, he realized he loved teaching and working with kids, so he went back to school and earned a degree in early childhood and elementary education and taught for 11 years before writing full time in 2006.

Learning About Marine Life the WaterFront Center of Oyster Bay. During a visit to the school, a representative from the center presented the “Touch Tank” program, which teaches students about marine life while being introduced to a variety of marine organisms typically found

at the bottom of the Oyster Bay National Wildlife Refuge.

Fairfield Elementary School first graders in Barbara Welsh’s class were intrigued by science when classmate Madisen Rosso’s father visited the class to conduct some ‘cool’ experiments.

Richard Rosso, a chemistry professor at St. John’s University,

brought in dry ice and liquid nitrogen, and demonstrated to the class how dry ice turns into a gas as it melts. He also “froze” a flower, a rubber ball and a banana in liquid nitrogen.

“The class was fascinated to see how quickly these items became frozen and brittle from the intense

cold,” Welsh said.

Rosso further captivated his audience by changing the color of water and turning it back to clear by adding certain chemicals.

He also made “Elephant Toothpaste,” by creating a fat stream of foam with hydrogen peroxide.
