LONG ISLAND – A new report has just been released which reveals 7 costly mistakes that most homeowners make when selling their home, and a 9 Step System that can help you sell your home fast and for the most amount of money. This industry report shows clearly how the traditional ways of selling homes have become increasingly less and less effective in today’s market. The fact of the matter is that fully three quarters of homesellers don’t get what they want for their home and become disillusioned and - worse financially disadvantaged when they put their home on the market.

Brisk winds and salt spray can enhance the experience of living by the seaside. But the same features of coastal living that attract residents can be unkind to many garden plants. Sun, salt, a light breeze and some sand may make for a picturesque day at the beach, but they can be anything but favorable to the delicate plants and flowers in a garden. Despite the difficulties, coastal living and gardening is possible if you implement some tips for creating a more welcoming environment for plants. Here’s how to do just that. • Set up a windbreak. Brightly colored ice plants and cosmos flowers can add splashes of color. • Add costal accessories. Typically seaside gardens are enhanced with knicknacks and other items that are specific to coastal living. Hungry for more palate-pleasing options, McKenna Elementary School Student Council invited School Lunch Director Paul Heckelman to a question-and-answer session on how to enhance the school lunch program. First raising ecological concerns, students suggested the use of more environmentally friendly food trays and discussed what to do with the fruits and vegetables that haven’t sold. They also asked if fruit smoothies, a self-

serve salad bar, more soup selections, more juice and better utensils “that don’t bend when you butter a bagel” could be incorporated into the program. The students learned that school menus are developed in accordance with strict state and federal guidelines to ensure optimal nutrition. However, Heckelman said he is always looking for ways to improve the program and will take their suggestions into

consideration as he plans for the next school year. Heckelman, through feedback from the PTAs in each school, arranged for students to taste test some proposed menu items during their lunch periods. He introduced students to a healthy, more flavorful pizza and stuffed breadsticks with mozzarella. Both received rave reviews from the most discerning young samplers. In fact, “sales are up 10-15 percent,” Heckelman said.

Did You Know? Ecoscaping is a growing trend among homeowners who want to take care of their lawns and landscapes but want to do so in a way that’s environmentally friendly. Integrating both landscape architecture and spatial planning with environmental science, ecoscaping is meant to

help homeowners create a sustainable and ecofriendly landscape design. It’s natural to assume that ecoscaping includes looking for ways to reduce reliance on chemical pesticides, but there are many additional ways homeowners can embrace ecoscaping. This includes

removing or refusing to plant invasive plants that are difficult to control because they are from different ecosystems and can threaten local wildlife and existing plants. Instead of choosing exotic plants that aren’t native to the area, choose native plants that are accustomed to the

local climate. Another way to embrace ecoscaping is to develop a planting strategy wherein plants are planted in beneficial growing conditions that can eliminate theneed for chemical fertilizers and excessive watering.

The Massapequa High School female and male select choruses, The Chordettes and The Crooners, respectively, had the opportunity to work with a local composer and perform at a choral festival held at Walt Whitman High School in South Huntington. Massapequa choral students, along with those from Huntington, Rockville Centre and South Huntington, worked collaboratively throughout the day to learn two selections from local composer and arranger Roger Ames. In the evening, the musical groups performed their own selections followed by the collaborative selections they learned during the day. Concrete Concrete was invented by the Ancient Romans.

Turning Points By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Discovering The Passion To Do What You Love… That was the topic I chose to speak on at the recent C.W. Post Honors Program Conference. The good news? Every last student in attendance at the standing room only panel had something they were passionate about and, in an ideal world, wished to pursue as a career. The bad news? Most they seemed all too content to relegate these passions to a mere hobby, rather than even giving the dreams a fleeting chance to exist in their own, real world. Musicians majoring in Chemistry, Artists majoring in Finance… This is not to say that all fields don’t hold some sort of fulfilling promise – but

just choosing a major for the sake of picking something, anything… well, I can’t say I support that philosophy wholeheartedly. And as for the money factor; well that only goes so far in dictating happiness. Say what you will about being able to purchase all the comforts and extravagances you like, but if you spend the majority of your life just going through the motions of a 9-5 job, I think it’s safe to assume no amount of compensation will make up for it. I’m not sure I made much of an impression on these students, as many are already well on their way to graduation and seem fairly set to continue on their chosen path. Others were a bit more open-minded, willing to put themselves out there and

explore – at least in the short term – for even the slightest chance at success in something they truly enjoyed. And still others remained undecided, juggling several interests while in the process of making that all-important decision of which direction to head in. I suppose the most important point I tried to make, and the one I attempt to follow myself, is that, no matter what decisions you make along the way, there is always room to change course, start fresh, adapt on the go… nothing is set in stone unless you allow it to be. As we grow and mature, so do our dreams, and what once may have seemed impossible could very well become a genuine possibility down the road.

people.” Councilman Muscarella noted that the success of the Blood Drive has twice earned the Town of Oyster Bay the prestigious New York Blood Center’s “Silver Award,” recognizing outstanding employee participation. “It’s something of which we’re all proud,” the Councilman commented. “As our program continues to grow, perhaps one day we will be the recipient of a gold award.” Councilman Muscarella went on to say that the locations for the blood drives are: Town Hall South Conference Room, 977 Hicksville Road, Massapequa (9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.); Town Hall North at the Blood Mobile, 54 Audrey Avenue, Oyster Bay (9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.) and the Department of Public Works War Room (Highway), 150 Miller Place (11:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.). To qualify as a blood donor, a person must between the ages of 17 and 75 years old (16 with parental permission and

76 or older with a doctor’s note dated within one year of donation), weigh at least 110 pounds and not have donated blood within the last 56 days. The Councilman noted that all blood types are needed, but O negative blood types are universal and especially needed at this time of need. He added that the Town will provide refreshments for everyone who donates. “Please help us make this blood drive a huge success,” Councilman Muscarella stated. “If you are not able to give, perhaps you know someone who can. Remember, every pint is precious.” Councilman Muscarella added that to make an appointment to donate, or for additional information contact my office at 516.624.6304. “And remember,” he said, “there are many people out there hoping you are the type to give blood. More importantly, you may also be the ‘right type’ for a patient waiting for the gift of life.”

The Town of Oyster Bay semi-annual blood drive will take place on Thursday, April 24th, according to Oyster Bay Town Councilman Joe Muscarella. Originally slated for March 6th, the Town was asked to move their date by the New York Blood Center to accommodate other blood drives affected by recent snow storms. “Blood banks need to be prepared 365 days a year,” Councilman Muscarella said. “That is why people should always donate whenever they can. Donating is quick and easy and is an entirely safe procedure. All materials used during the process are sterile, disposable and used only once…by you. There is no danger of contracting any disease, including AIDS. The pint of blood you donate will never be missed by your body, which manufactures an equivalent amount in 24 hours. When broken down into component parts, one single pint of blood can be used to heal and help the bodies of three different

OPENING DAY - On Saturday, April 5th, the Massapequa Coast Little League had their opening day parade at John Burns Park. Pictured is the Aberdeen Ironbirds.

LITTLE LEAGUE OPENING - The Massapequa Coast Little League Opening Day Ceremony was recently held at John J. Burns Park. Pictured: TOB Supervisor John Venditto, Councilwoman Rebecca Alesia, Nassau County Legislator Michael Venditto, Mayor Jeffrey Pravato, Trustee Richard Begandy and Deputy Mayor Teresa Spinosa along with the mangers, coaches and team members of the Massapequa Coast Little League.

Lifeguards Wanted

Oyster Bay Town Supervisor John Venditto announced that the Town is currently seeking individuals interested in working as a lifeguard for the 2014 summer season. “Town of Oyster Bay lifeguards not only carry with them a sense of pride, but they have the opportunity to enjoy a beautiful setting during the summer at one of the Town’s pristine beaches or pools,” Supervisor Venditto said. “Being a

lifeguard is no easy task, however, and is meant for those who are experienced swimmers and up for the challenge of protecting residential swimmers and beach attendees.” Supervisor Venditto noted that any interested applicants must possess a current Nassau County Department of Health Lifeguard Certification Card and a current CPR/ AED Certification Card. Qualified applicants may apply in person at the

Town of Oyster Bay Parks Department Human Resources Office, located in Town Hall South (977 Hicksville Road, Massapequa). “Having a summer job as a lifeguard is a rewarding and exciting opportunity,” Supervisor Venditto said. “They provide an invaluable service to the community. Serving as a lifeguard also helps build confidence, self-esteem, and friendships. It’s a great way to spend a summer.”

On March 21st, Massapequa experienced one of its biggest charity events in its history! Catch A Wave for Winthrop was a beach themed charity event that raised nearly $4,000 for Winthrop Hospital’s Cancer Center for Kids! A stroll down the high school’s main hallway was Catch a Wave’s Boardwalk, featuring Massapequa High School’s many clubs who acted as vendors! As people strolled down the beach themed hallway they felt as if they were in the midst of summer eating Italian Ices and wearing sunglasses. Inside the gym was a benefit concert filled with Massapequa’s most talented musicians. Admissions not only raised for the hospital but students and parents were able to vote on which postcards, created by Art and English Language Arts students, they wanted sent to Winthrop with their ticket. The house band, with seniors Brittany Garcia and Tom Morse alongside juniors Angelica Ansbacher, Rob Catinella, Julie Kapuvari, Brandan Lawrence and John Witt, were already playing an infectious tune that got the mood going as everyone entered the gym. Students sat on blankets and tossed beach balls in the air as they waited for the concert to begin. Seven-year-old Sadie Freifield, a cancer patient in remission, and her mom, Beth Freifield, who about Winthrop Hospital and thanked the Massapequa Community. Additional highlights of the event included the many raffles donated by sports booster clubs and community business, student musical performers and bands such as Spectrum and Vigil Antics, as well as the colorful decorations hand crafted by the National Art Honor Society. Co-coordinators for Catch A Wave for Winthrop Natalie Gramegna, Brandan Lawrence and Ryan Schulte along with their advisors Mrs. Gale Domingo, Mr. Robert Hempel and Mrs. Christine Starr are immensely proud of the night and their ability to continue their third annual project for Winthrop Hospital’s Cancer Center for Kids.

Good Friday Prep

The 8th grade students at Grace Day School in Massapequa demonstrated all fourteen Stations of the Cross in chapel this week. The graduating class reenacted each passion scene during this Lent season to prepare for holy

week, especially Good Friday. Even though parents and family were allowed to attend the event, the 8th grade class was focused on driving home the message of Christ’s suffering and death to the younger students, K-7th

grade. “Acting out the Stations of the Cross helps the students to understand the message of Lent and Holy Week on all levels,” SWORN IN - Mayor Jeffrey P. Pravato was sworn as Mayor of the Village of Massapequa explains Dr. Nicole Park by Nassau County Legislator Michael Venditto. Pictured: Mayor Jeffrey P. Pravato, Passeggio, Chaplin. When paying the tax bill in person, taxpayers are reminded to bring the entire tax bill with their payments. Payments being made by mail should include the second half stub. Residents should NOT write on, fold, staple or otherwise deface the tax stub as it can cause the computer system to reject payment. Residents now have free access to tax bills online with the ability to pay taxes through ACH check payment or credit card. These services are available through a link on our Town website, www.oysterbaytown.com. Residents should be aware there is a service fee if they chose to pay taxes online (Town of Oyster Bay receives no portion of fee). “When calling the Tax Office for information on property taxes, residents are requested to have the school district, section, block and lot numbers of the property in question available,” Receiver Stefanich noted. “This information is listed on the tax bill and on the property deed.”
