Locations for the blood drives are: Town Hall South Conference Room, 977 Hicksville Road, Massapequa (9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.) and Town Hall North, 54 Audrey Avenue, Oyster Bay (9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.). Councilwoman Johnson added that in order to qualify as a blood donor, a person must between the ages of 17 and 75 years old…16 with parental permission and 76 or older with a doctor’s note…weigh at least 110 pounds and not have donated blood within the last 56 days. Anyone who has received a tattoo within the past twelve months is ineligible to

apply. It is recommended that volunteers eat well (low fat) and drink fluids in the days before the Blood Drive. The Councilwoman noted that all blood types are needed, especially O positive and O negative.

Refreshments will be provided for all who donate.

In addition, each time someone makes a donation, they earn advantage points redeemable for a wide variety of gifts, gift cards, or other merchandise.

Also, McDonalds will be offering a coupon to all donor registrants offering a free large sandwich or salad when you make any type of purchase at McDonalds.

The Town of Oyster Bay will be holding its Blood Drive on Thursday, April 13th, to help hospitals meet the ongoing need for blood donations. “Long Island Blood Services cannot meet its vital, lifesaving mission without the efforts of the Town’s Blood Drive and its volunteers,” said Oyster Bay Town Councilwoman Michele M. Johnson. “We strongly encourage all those eligible to participate. If you have family members or friends who are willing to donate, please ask them to also support our effort.”

“Blood banks need to be prepared 24 hours a day, 365 days a year,” Councilwoman Johnson said. “This constant state of urgency is why people should always donate whenever they can.

Massapequa High School junior Elizabeth Schafer has used a lifelong challenge as inspiration for an awardwinning art project. She created a dress for her fashion design class that was displayed at the Sunrise Mall.

Elizabeth has a condition called albinism, which limits her vision. Since last year, she has used an app called Join.me to connect her iPad to her teacher’s computer or SmartBoard so she can see notes and other course material. Each time she connects, she needs a nine-

digit code, which teachers have typically been providing to her on Post-it notes.

In Julie Thornton’s fashion design class, students had to make an outfit out of unconventional materials.

Elizabeth saved 3,874 notes with Join.me codes and used them to make the skirt part of her dress. Groups of 26 Postit notes were folded through an origami technique she learned from her sister and put together to make tear drop-shaped bundles. The crop top was made using Gatorade bottle caps, with

Elizabeth’s work was selected for the Art in the Heart exhibit hosted by the Long Island Art Teachers Association, and she received an award for 3-D Excellence.

“For me, this dress goes beyond a design that incorporates Join.me codes,” she said. “This outfit is extremely symbolic and through this outfit a story can be told. Whether it be through inspiring me, writing down codes, helping conceptualize the design or actually helping me construct the dress, so many people have had pivotal roles in creating this outfit.”

Ms. Thornton explained that Elizabeth’s creation was a multidisciplinary project.

In addition to the art skills required, it incorporated technology with her use of the Join.me codes and science by reusing materials to create a product.

The centerpiece is a three-tiered flowerbed, which he filled with topsoil and also provided an irrigation system. Next to it is a picnic table so students can sit and take notes while studying the environment or make observations on the progress of their plantings.

The addition of birdhouses is expected to bring more wildlife to Unqua’s school grounds.

“It’s a bit nostalgic for me to come back to my roots and give something back,” said Christopher, who graduated from Unqua in 2011. “I hope

that students and teachers will take advantage of this.

Hands-on experiences stick out in students’ minds.”

Christopher, who is salutatorian of the Class of 2017, added that the purpose of this project is to show students there are small but meaningful ways for them to make positive impacts on the environment. He received financial support from the PTA for construction materials.

“I think it’s great that he thought of us for his project,” said Principal Deanna Catapano. “It’s a nice addition to the school and increases learning opportunities for our students.”

They drew various shapes, which they then split into equal pieces to create

The students also played interactive games to add, match, order and simplify fractions.

Residents who prefer to mail in their payments, should send them to the Office of the Receiver of Taxes, 74 Audrey Avenue, Oyster Bay, N.Y. 117711539. Payments being made by mail should include the second half stub. Residents should NOT write on, fold, staple or otherwise deface the tax stub as it can cause the computer system to reject the payment.

Residents now have free access to tax bills online with the ability to pay taxes through ACH check payment or credit card. These services are available through a link on our Town website, www.oysterbaytown.com.

Residents should be aware there is a service fee if they chose to pay taxes online (Town of Oyster Bay receives no portion of fee).

“When calling the Tax Office for information on property taxes, residents are requested to have the

school district, section, block and lot numbers of the property in question available. This information is listed on the tax bill and on the property deed.”

American Legion Post #1066 and Sgt. Peter F. Colleran Post #7763, Veterans of Foreign Wars, are once again jointly conducting the Memorial Day Parade and Service in the Massapequas.

The date is Monday, May 29th and the starting time is 10:00 a.m. sharp. Line up time is 9:30 a.m. The parade route begins on Front Street in Massapequa Park, travels west on Front Street to Park Boulevard, north on Park Boulevard to Clark Boulevard, west on Clark Boulevard to Broadway, south on Broadway to Klestinec Park, where a Memorial Service and Wreath Laying Ceremony will take place.

Massapequa Cares On April 29th, the Village of Massapequa Park and the Greater Massapequa Day Committee will host another event for the veterans at Northport Veterans Hospital.

The purpose of “Massapequa Cares” Day is to entertain the men who fought for our country with a USO type show.

As in the past, we will strive to make “Massapequa Cares” a day to be remembered by the veterans. This can only be done with the support of our community both in volunteering their services and with monetary contributions.

This annual exhibit includes artwork in a wide variety of subjects and media, created by students from kindergarten through Advanced Placement high school courses. Kiera’s piece was teacups created from ink and watercolor paint. She focused on overlapping forms and designing with pattern.

Kiera won the thirdgrade Award of Excellence.

Art is not a subject to itself, but one that connects to all areas of the curriculum at McKenna Elementary School in the Massapequa School District. Under the direction of art teacher Ellen Cervone, first-

graders recently completed an interdisciplinary art project.

After reading the book “The Rainbow Fish” by Marcus Pfister, students made their own fish paintings using oil pastels and watercolor paints,

and then matted them on construction paper.

The assignment also had a character education component, as the book included lessons on sharing, friendship and kindness.
