Angel Ball Honoree The Long Island Council on Alcoholism & Drug Dependence, Inc. (LICADD) announced the 28th Anniversary Angel Ball Honoree Humanitarian Award is Tara E. Conner, former Miss USA. Tara Conner is a Television Personality and Recovery Advocate.

Through her work, she shares her experience, strength and hope with audiences throughout the

United States.

Conner was crowned Miss USA in 2006. During December of that year, she entered the Caron Treatment Center and completed 30 days of treatment for alcohol and drug addiction. She has since celebrated 8 years of sobriety.

Tara hopes to raise awareness that addiction is a disease and that many people go on to lead a healthy, productive life in

recovery. She especially wants educators, families and professionals to know that sobriety at an early age is achievable and that it greatly enhances life’s possibilities. Miss Conner states, “It’s so important to understand that addiction is a family disease,” said Conner. “I experienced this firsthand within my own family. But I’ve also

Used to be, if you wanted to get in touch with someone, you picked up the phone and called.

If you couldn’t reach them immediately, you left a message – either on an answering machine or with another person associated with them – and then waited patiently for a return call. Tedious, right?

So why is it that, these days, with every gadget and method of communicating imaginable, it seems more difficult than ever to actually, you know, communicate?

Between cell phones and texting and social media, there are more ways to reach friends and family – and even complete strangers – than ever before. Everyone has at least one gadget easily accessible at all times, and yet how often do you find yourself waiting hours (or days) for a response? That is, if one ever comes.

It seems odd to think that communication could almost be made too easy, but that is precisely what has occurred. With the constant influx of e-mails, texts, photo and video messages, Facebook and Instagram notifications

and, oh yeah, actual missed calls and voicemails, I suppose the easiest course of action for some is to simply “ignore all” and move on.

Too bad there are those of us on the receiving end of that dismissive approach – people who, for all our technology and gadgets, actually yearn for that human connection in the form of a personal acknowledgement that said communication was received, processed, appreciated for what it was worth and responded to appropriately.

MUSIC’S PLACE IN THE DIGITAL AGE I have a deeply ingrained love for music, particularly listening to new things and looking further into the artists I find interesting.

Unfortunately, what I have noticed as a high school freshman is that I often struggle to find people to share discoveries with who are willing to explore new musical grounds. The general trend seems to be that young people don’t recognize music as a main focal point in their lives like past generations have. Instead, the idea of immersing oneself in this highly spiritual, universal experience is being practiced less, which is evidenced by many of my peers.

On countless occasions, my parents have recounted their time in high school with stories that can all be drawn back to a mutual appreciation for music.

Although not all friendships were rooted in their love for the same bands or genres (but many were), people could always find a way to relate to one another through this medium. When people my age find themselves without something to talk about, discussion about a new favorite tune is hardly ever even considered. It is easier to simply default to social media or other means of digital distraction to break the tension.

There is also an astounding lack of devotion to artists nowadays. With the advent of streaming services like Pandora and Spotify, individual songs are played on stations created by the user. Allowing unfavorable songs to be skipped and offering unlimited access to an endless list of tracks gives young people no reason to purchase a musician’s entire

album. To constantly browse through fragments of what is really a large cohesive work does a great disservice to the listener. In order to allow yourself to grow with the artist, you must see the whole picture.

This develops a story that can be interpreted differently for anyone and is what should drive people to become engrossed in other similar compositions. A fast paced society is creating a youth who undervalue music and cannot fully appreciate it.

We are neglecting many opportunities for expanding our knowledge of the world of music and are failing to forge lasting bonds with others within it. While this may be very disheartening, popular culture can embrace new ideas very rapidly, providing some hope for fully inviting music into our lives.

LICADD Named A Finalist LICADD has been named a Finalist in the Rising Star category in The 3rd Annual Long Island Imagine Awards. The Long Island Imagine Awards was created to offer formal acknowledgement to some of Long Island’s most effective and innovative nonprofit organizations.

Applications Available High school seniors looking to pursue an education in the performing, visual, or literary arts will be pleased to learn that the Annual Town of Oyster Bay Arts Council Scholarship Competition is approaching. Oyster Bay Town Supervisor John Venditto announced that registration for the Annual Town of Oyster Bay Arts Council Scholarship Competition is currently underway. The Arts Council Scholarship Competition encourages high school seniors to submit work in categories such as music, dance, visual arts and literary arts for the chance to be awarded a scholarship.

The Arts Council’s Annual Scholarship Competition is open solely to all high school seniors who reside in or attend school in the Town of Oyster Bay. The event represents an opportunity to celebrate inspiring works in vocal music, instrumental music, dance, film, and literature. The Town of Oyster Bay Arts Council will present scholarships to the winning 2015 Artists for creating such beautiful

and stunning works of performing, visual and literary arts.

Applicants for the Scholarship Competition must submit two reference letters from a teacher or professional in the student’s preferred category in addition to a typed letter (four copies) detailing the participant’s career goals. There is a $25 processing fee for each category. Payment will be accepted as a check or money order only, no cash will be accepted.

John H. West Elementary School students in the Plainedge School District made New York State Regent Roger Tilles feel welcome with short, informational grade-level presentations during a February 4th “We Believe” assembly.

Members of the senior choir impressed Regent Tilles with their vocal talents, and the fifth-grade student council presented their guest with a key to the school.

Regent Tilles told the students that he was not only impressed by the knowledge they have acquired and their beliefs to obtain great educational skills, but also that he does not often get away from his

job to have fun.

“This is the first time a school has given a presentation like this for me,” Mr. Tilles said.

Tilles also took time to read poetry to fourthgraders in Brook Myers’ class. He read a number of personal favorites from Shel Silverstein’s “A Light in the Attic” and “Poetry Speaks to Children” and even taught the students a scary poem.

“Poems can take different forms and shapes,” he told the students. “One way to learn a poem is to put it to music, because in the end, songs are a form of poetry.”

A letter from Principal Carol Muscarella prompted Tilles’ visit to the elementary school. Ms.

Muscarella’s letter outlined the discord regarding implementation and expansion of the Common Core Learning Standards and assessments. Instead, she outlined a Teaching, Learning, and Checkingin (TLC) approach to education. High standards are essential to students’ futures, she said in the letter, and assessing student learning is valuable when done correctly.

With Muscarella’s TLC approach “summative assessments at the end of the school year would determine what learners have learned and what they may need to continue to focus on,” the letter stated.

Town of Oyster Bay residents are invited to “Learn To Skate” this spring by registering for skating lessons at the Town of Oyster Bay’s Ice Skating Center, located at 1001 Stewart Avenue in Bethpage.

Throughout the year, the ice skating center offers skating class for residents interested in learning to skate or in sharpening their skating abilities.

Registration for Series 4 (March 7th through May 1st) will begin on February 21st. Those interested can register at the rink, online (www.TheRinx.com) or by phone 516.797.4126.

The “Learn to Skate” program offers group skating lessons to beginners through advanced levels. Skaters are paired based on age and skill, ranging from pre-school and basic skills through advanced levels. The program is eight weeks in length

with the exception of Sunday classes which are prorated for seven weeks.

All classes are 30 minutes in length. For residents, the fee is $135 for the session. For non-residents the fee is $175. The “Learn to Skate” schedule is: Mondays, Wednesdays & Fridays from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m., Tuesdays & Thursdays 10:00 a.m. to Noon, Saturdays from 11:50 a.m. to 12:50 p.m. and Sundays from 12:15 p.m. to 12:45 p.m. There will be no class held on Easter Sunday, April 5th.

Registration costs include admission into the session for which you are registered on the day of the lesson, membership in the United States Figure Skating (USFS) Basic Skills Program, USFS record book for NEW members, and stickers and USFS Badges upon mastering of each level. There will also be an evaluation on week seven with a

recommendation for the next series. There will be no refunds or makeups and skate rental is not included in price. Helmets, gloves or mittens and warm layers are recommended for all skaters.

The staff of the Rinx Skating School is comprised of experienced and qualified professionals, governed by US Figure Skating, USA Hockey and Professional Skaters Association. Their staff places a major emphasis on teaching the fundamentals of ice skating with a major focus on fun. The Town is proud to offer outstanding programs that are great for every skater. PAJAMA PROGRAM - McKenna Junior Girl Scout Troop 2161 organized a Pajama Program Organization, www.pajamaprogram.org, PJ and Book drive for the month of January. Donation boxes were placed in McKenna Elementary School, local libraries and dance studios. The Troop also received approval to organize a Pajama Day at McKenna, and students and staff showed support by wearing PJs on January 14th. They collected just over 140 pairs of new PJs and books for this wonderful organization!

Dan recently retired after 44 years as a veterinarian and owner of the Jericho Animal Hospital. He and his wife Karen enjoy living on the water and look forward to enjoying retirement by spending more time aboard their boat “Doc’s Retreat.” Dan joined the United States Power Squadrons in 1985, but it wasn’t until 1999 that he started to take on leadership positions, first in the Jones Beach Power Squadron and then later in United States Power Squadrons District 3 (Long Island). As District Commander, he assumed the leadership of all 16 squadrons across Long Island.

as Commander of District 3 of the United States Power Squadrons will be completed at the D3 Conference on Saturday, March 14th, at the Melville Marriott, 1350 Old Walt Whitman Road in Melville.

Commander Flinn will be honored at 1:15 p.m. on this date.

Life Jacket Loaners

The Sea Tow Foundation is accepting applications from non-profit organizations and boating agencies throughout the country to host a life jacket loaner program in their local area through a new grant from the Sport Fish Restoration & Boating Trust Fund, which is

administered by the U.S. Coast Guard.

The Sea Tow Foundation is a non-profit, 501(c) (3) organization with the mission of promoting safe boating practices. To help promote life jacket use, the Sea Tow Foundation stocks more than 250 life jacket loaner stands nationwide

where boaters may borrow life jackets for free for a day of safe fun on the water.

The Sea Tow Foundation Life Jacket Loaner program has been funded through donations and grants since its inception in 2008. Since then, more than 28,500 free life jackets have been loaned to boaters through

the program.

“Life jacket loaner programs are most often used by boaters who forgot to pack their own life jackets or decided at the last minute to invite a friend to go boating and didn’t have a life jacket that would fit him or her,” said Sea Tow Foundation

Executive Director Gail R. Kulp, CAE. “These new life jacket loaner stations will be open in time for the 2015 summer boating season so that boaters around the country can have the opportunity to borrow a life jacket for a day out on the water.”

SCHOLARSHIP WINNERS - Graduating 8th graders from Grace Day School in Massapequa were awarded over $98,000 in 4-year scholarships to secondary schools.

Their exceptional performance on secondary school entrance exams granted them scholarships to several select high schools. Scholarships were awarded to six students, nearly one-third of the graduating class. The winners are pictured here: Michael Pinelli, Jake Vota, Rhea Sahadath, Nicolette Urzia, David Schneider and Reuben Phillip.

Daniel Flinn, SN, of Massapequa, became commander of the United States Power Squadrons, District 3 (Long Island) at the Melville Marriott on March 15th. Dan called his watch and the 16 local squadron commanders within D3 “Dan’s Navigators.”

Daniel has achieved the grade of Senior Navigator, the highest squadron grade possible, indicating that he has successfully passed all available advanced grade and elective courses covering every aspect of navigation and seamanship.

His goal during his year as D3 Commander was to have others following his path, and also focus on increasing public service efforts and improving the diversity of squadron events. These public service efforts include presenting

Enriching Summer Learning

This summer, Nassau BOCES Long Island High School for the Arts (LIHSA), Long Island’s top-ranked arts school invites students to learn from the masters in a variety of disciplines.

The LIHSA Summer Arts Academy offers young artists (entering grades 6-12 in the fall) a hands-on learning experience with professional artists who will help them to develop their skills.

Beginnerthrough advanced-level classes and workshops are conducted in a custom-designed, airconditioned arts complex that boasts professional

dance studios, state-ofthe-art digital media and music/audio production labs, art studios, practice rooms and a fully-equipped professional theatre.

Daily courses are available in drama, musical theatre, creative writing, dance, music and visual arts. Attendees work with ensembles, enjoy performances from guest artists and take cultural field trips to museums and Broadway shows.

The academy concludes with performances by all students in each arts discipline.

This four-week academy

runs June 29th-July 24th, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., at the Long Island High School for the Arts in Syosset. Enrollment into the academy requires an individual school district recommendation. Accepted students are placed in classes based on age and level of achievement.

Volunteers Needed Family & Children’s Association, Long Island’s leading human care agency is seeking volunteers for its new Friendly Visitors program set to begin in May. Family & Children’s Association serves nearly 9,000 seniors each year providing case management, financial counseling, health insurance counseling and other support services.

They will provide training and on-going support to volunteers enabling them to provide companionship

and once-a-week visitation to a local, homebound senior. Volunteers should be able to drive to various locations within Nassau County and commit to one hour per week of socialization with their senior.

According to Family & Children’s Association President/CEO Jeffrey L. Reynolds, Ph.D., “The Friendly Visitor program will add a much-needed socialization component to our cadre of services devoted to Long Island’s seniors. We assist many

seniors’ goals of living independently in their homes and this program will support them in that effort.”

Deadline Extended In 2011, the Firemen’s Association of the State of New York (FASNY) unveiled a historic educational initiative called the FASNY Higher Education Learning Plan (HELP). This statewide community college tuition reimbursement program is geared towards recruiting and retaining volunteer firefighters throughout New York.

FASNY announced a deadline extension - to February 20th - for firefighters to apply for the new 2015 semester.

“FASNY HELP has been a tremendous success and a vital initiative for fire departments to boost their recruiting of the next generation of firefighters,” said FASNY President Robert McConville.

“HELP funding comes from our federal SAFER grant, which has driven recruitment initiatives throughout the state.

We urge all interested students to sign up, and apply for this tuition reimbursement program

before the February 20th deadline.”

Under FASNY HELP, an individual who hasn’t already achieved a college degree, or has not taken 80 or more college credits, is eligible for up to 100% tuition reimbursement in exchange for maintaining good grades and fulfilling service requirements in one of New York’s volunteer fire companies. There is no restriction on the type of academic course(s) that the FASNY HELP studentvolunteer firefighter can pursue either on a fulltime or part-time basis.

Starting with the Fall 2013 semester, FASNY HELP was expanded to cover online courses taken through Empire State College.

FASNY HELP funds can be utilized for tuition costs incurred in the fall and spring semesters. Eligible student-volunteers must maintain acceptable levels of training and volunteer activity while attending school and fulfill a service requirement after they

complete their course of study. They must attend the closest community college or one within a 50-mile radius of their residence. Empire State College’s inclusion in the program has expanded students’ options.

Due to a variety of factors, many volunteer fire departments are experiencing the need to recruit and retain more members. Tuition reimbursement can be an effective incentive for people to volunteer in their local community.

The deadline to apply for tuition reimbursement for the new semester has been extended to February 20th.
