He then recounted his memories of hearing Dr. King speak for the first time as a 12 year-old boy in Birmingham. Following the tragic bombing at the 16th Street Church, he said he was determined to join other young students in a peaceful march through the streets of Birmingham.

But first, he sought his parents’ permission to march.

“At first, they were against it. But the next day, my father gave his permission,” Dr. Hrabowski said. “They told me they prayed about it, but in the end, they supported me.” That support from family and community is a cornerstone of his concept of empowering young people “On a day when we celebrate the achievements of Dr. King,” he said, “I would encourage our young people to dream

big. Dream about the possibilities… decide what you want to do in life. And then, think about what it takes to reach that dream. What I took away from the [civil rights] movement was the importance of dreaming about the possibilities,” he said. “Children have an enormous capacity to think and act. That’s what we want parents and teachers to remember.”

A noted researcher and author, Dr. Hrabowski’s research and publications focus on science and math education, with emphasis on minority participation and performance. He was recently named by President Obama to chair the President’s Advisory Commission on Educational Excellence for African Americans. His latest book is Holding Fast to Dreams: Empowering Youth from the Civil Rights Crusade to STEM Achievement.

For the 46th consecutive year, Northwell Health employees gathered to honor the teachings and vision of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. The ceremony, held at North Shore University Hospital’s Rust Auditorium, was simulcast to other Northwell facilities across the New York/ metro area.

This year’s keynote speaker was Dr. Freeman Hrabowski, president of UMBC (The University of Maryland, Baltimore County) and a child leader in the civil rights movement, who was featured in Spike Lee’s 1997 documentary, Four Little Girls, the story of the 1963 bombing of Birmingham’s 16th Street Baptist Church. His presentation focused on the importance of inspiring young people to take action.

I’m willing to go out on a limb to say that even those who would count winter as their favorite season do not enjoy driving in the snow and icy conditions it brings, especially if they live on Long Island.

Just the other morning, after a surprise helping of the white stuff, I was reminded of the joys of a morning commute in about six inches of slush…

The privilege of driving behind those with an aversion to cleaning off their rooftops and back windows… The honor of inching behind drivers who seem to think that to surpass 20 mph would be criminal…

The thrill of testing out my brakes every car length or so, as people ahead come to a screeching halt due to…what, exactly? I couldn’t tell you.

Sure, I understand the anxiety which can come from being forced to travel in such conditions – to a degree. But when a few select drivers and their inability to, you know, drive are the cause? Well, that’s where I lose patience.

I’m pretty sure they teach this stuff in driver’s ed, in defensive driving courses – or in the big old handbook known as common sense. It’s not rocket science people. #1. You need to see the road, so clean windows and mirrors are a must. #2. The rest of us need to see the road as well, so having an 18-inch clump of snow fly off the back of someone’s car into your windshield… not the most conducive to aforementioned point. #3. Brakes do not respond well on wet pavement, snow or ice – so it is best to

work with the newly elected President of the Association, Herkimer County Sheriff Chris Farber, and sheriffs around the state, to further the efforts of the Sheriffs’ Association to enhance public safety in New York State through professional training and accreditation programs, public safety

Internship Program The Long Island Game Farm - Wildlife Park & Children’s Zoo is excited to announce a new Internship Program available at the park in the areas of daily operations, animal handling, education and office management. All current college students interested in the fields of hospitality, veterinary medicine, other sciences such as biology or business and marketing are encouraged to apply.

As part of the park’s latest employment opportunities, Long Island Game Farm is also issuing a call to seniors, stay-at-home parents or part-time workers to join its team on a volunteer basis. Due to inclement weather conditions, the 5th Annual Coaches and Alumni vs. Cancer Basketball Game has been rescheduled for Saturday, February 27th, from 2 to 4 p.m. at Massapequa High School. Come on down and support a worthy cause while enjoying an entertaining afternoon of basketball!

This exciting event, coordinated by Massapequa’s head varsity coach Martin Voigt, is a collaboration between the Massapequa High School boys varsity basketball team, team alumni, the boys booster club and

family and friends of the boys’ basketball program in an effort to raise money for cancer.

Alumni basketball players from as early as 1977 have been contacted to participate in this year’s event, and spectators will have the opportunity to purchase raffle tickets and win prizes, such as a Mets signed baseball, a Jets signed jersey, tickets to Knicks and Rangers games and many other prizes that were donated by local merchants.

As in previous years, money raised from the event will support the Lustgarten Foundation

for Pancreatic Cancer Research. Cash donations by players and friends or checks made out to “Lustgarten Foundation” for Pancreatic Cancer Research will be accepted.

Town of Oyster Bay residents are invited to Learn to Skate this spring by registering for skating lessons at the Town of Oyster Bay Ice Skating Center, located at Bethpage Community Park.

“The Ice Skating Center offers skating classes for residents all throughout the year. This winter season is an ideal time for newcomers to learn how to ice skate or for veteran skaters to strengthen their abilities.

Registration for Series 4 (March 5th through April 29th) is available at the rink, online (www.TheRinx.com) or by phone at 516.797.4126.

The Learn to Skate program offers group skating lessons to beginners through advanced levels.

Skaters are paired based on age and skill, ranging from pre-school and basic skills through advanced levels.

The program is eight weeks in length with the exception of Sunday classes which are

prorated for seven weeks.

All classes are 30 minutes in length. For residents, the fee is $135 for the session. For non-residents the fee is $175.

The Learn to Skate schedule is: Mondays, Wednesdays & Fridays from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m., Tuesdays and Thursdays 10:00 a.m. to Noon, Saturdays from 11:50 a.m. to 12:50 p.m. and Sundays from 12:15 p.m. to 12:45 p.m. There will be no classes on Sunday, March 27th in observance of Easter

Snowman Lesson Lockhart Elementary School second-graders learned the states of matter: solid, liquid, gas, with a little help from a frosty friend. Each secondgrade class was given a real snowman that melted away throughout the day in the classroom.

Students made observations, measured

the water, and made predictions as to what they thought would happen.

Some students really enjoyed watching the snowman change and were sad to see him go!

Others were excited to write descriptive sentences as he melted before their eyes while another class of students

wanted to personalize their snowman, calling him Snow Dude!

Lockhart second-grade teachers Katelyn Mulvey, Meredith O’Pasek and Debbie Cirella said, “The use of snowmen was a fun, relatable and memorable way of delivering this science lesson to students.”

major emphasis on having fun. The Town is happy to continue offering such outstanding programs that are enjoyable for skaters of all ages.

The Town of Oyster Bay’s Department of Community and Youth Services will be offering exciting workshops to residents for the Spring 2016 season, and registration for all applications is open from now until February 26th, Councilman Joseph G. Pinto announced.

The Workshop Enrichment Program offers excellent and informative programs that offer residents the opportunity to develop useful new talents and hobbies.

Workshops in categories such as the arts, education, entertainment, fitness, music and more will be available for residents of all ages.

Councilman Pinto also advised residents to take careful notice of the locations of every workshop program listed on the Workshop Enrichment Program brochure. There will be a SNOWMAN LESSON - With the use of real snowmen, Lockhart students learned wide range of courses for adults and children held the three states of matter in a relatable way.

Phoenix Award Gala Set North Shore Horse Rescue & Sanctuary (NSHR), a local ASPCA (American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals) non-profit horse shelter, is hosting its Second Annual Phoenix Award Gala on Friday, March 4th, at 7 p.m. This year’s event will honor the Novak Family, owners of the Long Island Game Farm – Wildlife Park & Children’s Zoo (LIGF), for their outstanding work in promoting prevention, health, humane practice and advocacy for all animals. The Novak Family and the NSHR Board of Directors invite all Long Island animal lovers to join

them for the event, which is taking place at Giorgio’s, located at 100 Fox Hill Drive in Baiting Hollow, New York.

This Annual Gala aims to raise the additional funds necessary for year-round care of its permanent and fostered horses.

The organization also welcomes volunteers of all ages and experience levels, though anyone age 14 to 18 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian and younger horse lovers may apply to volunteer as part of a group-based day project through youth clubs or school classes.

Melinda Novak, Vice President of LIGF, are being honored for their animal education efforts through programs at the zoo, as well as for their support of NSHR. “We are truly thrilled to be honored with this recognition and award,” says Melinda Novak. “Everyone at the park works especially hard to inspire educational values for our visitors – young and old – and to maintain the safety and health of our animals. Our interactive experiences, combined with the overall passion of our staff, encourages others to become global citizens and to promote animal welfare.

Founded by Laurel Palermo and Tom Renzetti in 2002, NSHR began as a small boarding facility known as Gold Rush Farms. The pair rescued their first horse, Phoenix, in 2003 after finding the five-year-old mustang mare pregnant and neglected, which ultimately led to the formation of the 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. NSHR relies solely on its 100 percent volunteer base to operate the facilities each day and support of its continued

mission of saving the lives of abandoned, abused and unwanted horses, many of which are up for slaughter.

The ultimate mission of the organization is to find loving, informed homes for these gentle giants, while also committing to allowing permanent residents to live out their lives in a safe, stress-free environment. Funded in part by grants from the ASPCA, the farm is also verified by the Global Federation of Animal Sanctuaries.

The North Shore Horse Rescue’s Second Annual Phoenix Award Gala includes a sit-down dinner, with a cocktail hour and

subsequent reception.
