To be a child once again, that carefree spirit, unconcerned by the world outside of our miniature universe – one of Barbie dolls and tea parties and recess and school friends – shielded from the stress of reality for as long as our parents can protect us. Back to that sense of innocence when we assumed that all those “best” friendships from elementary school would never fade… when we never anticipated a day that those relatives we loved so dearly would ever leave us… when all was right with the world – our world – and

we had no need or desire to look beyond the immediate.

Some would say this sense of idealism was misplaced and only served to make the subsequent realities that much harsher; in fact, just a quick look at the children of today would suggest a great loss of that innocence I reminisce over now. And which is better? To grow up jaded, or to develop that cynicism over time? Or, better yet, to not let outside forces beyond our control shape our being to the point of losing our sense of self in the process? If only the right answer was always the simplest.

So we grow up, and we

grow. And we realize that each day brings with it new obstacles and reality checks that we may have never anticipated. But this is life, as childhood becomes adulthood, and ultimately, this growth is all part of that process. We can’t have it any other way – and we shouldn’t want to. People come into our lives for a reason, this much is true.

Sometimes they stay, other times they go; but either way, we are never meant to be the same.

Although, there are definitely days when we could all use a little time on the swings at recess with our friends.

Babylon School District’s preschool program for district residents, offered as part of the high school’s college child psychology course, also earns students college credit through Long Island University’s Secondary Collegiate Articulated Learning Experience (SCALE) program. The program, which is located at the high school, offers a unique and active learning environment for both preschoolers and high school students.

Students enrolled in child psychology apply the knowledge they acquire during the course as they take on the role of student teachers in a preschool class of 24 children. The students work together to develop creative lesson plans, age-appropriate activities, and construct learning materials. Every

Tuesday and Thursday, they serve as positive role models to the three- and four-year-old children in the program. The students enrolled in child psychology practice critical thinking strategies, demonstrate leadership skills, and communicate effectively all while gaining practical, hands-on experience working with children.

“Having the preschool located at the high school provides valuable resources including our own library, access to recreation areas, community connections, and services provided by various student organizations,” said teacher Lisa Brush. “I work with a responsible, compassionate, and dedicated group of high school students. Every day it is evident how much they care about the

children in our program.

We collaborate to make every preschool day a success, with the hope that we are instilling in the children a love for school and learning.”

In addition to the educational benefits, the program provides high school students with the opportunity to get a head start on their college education by enabling qualified juniors and seniors to earn college credits, which can be transferred to eligible universities.

Anyone interested in enrolling their child at Babylon Preschool can pick up an application in the high school attendance office and return it to the attention of Ms. Brush, Family & Consumer Sciences.

For the third straight year, Babylon High School has been named a Blue Star School by the W!SE Financial Literacy Program and teacher Andrew Marulis has received a Gold Star Teacher award. These awards were issued based on performance results in the school’s Wall Street and personal finance class.

Each year, the classes’ students take the W!SE financial literary exam. To earn the Blue Star School status, schools testing 10 or more students must achieve a 75 percent passing rate on this exam and have either a majority of students on a given

grade level take the test or have the students who took it achieve an average score of 80 percent or higher.

Teachers with a 90 percent pass rate earn the title of Gold Star Teacher and are honored at W!SE’s annual MoneyPOWER Conference for Financial Literacy. A few hundred schools in New York State participate in the W!SE Financial Literacy program. For the past several years, Babylon has ranked among the top five schools on Long Island.

The high school elective has been offered for the past three years and continues to gain

interest from students in grades 10 through 12.

Throughout the program, students learn about basic financial concepts, banking, personal finances, insurance, investing and credit card awareness.

At the end of the course, students complete a corporate research project on a company of their choice. Based on their performance, students are eligible to receive college credit for the course through SUNY Farmingdale.

Learning Native Ways

Fourth-grade students from Belmont and Marion G. Vedder elementary schools in the North Babylon School District came together to spend the day learning about the way of life and traditions of the Eastern Native Americans.

During the event, the

students played games, made miniature clay bowls, and were exposed to numerous Native American artifacts and their purposes.

Additionally, the children partook in a Native American story and learned a song and dance.

“This field trip was

held to give students an introduction to the Iroquois life so that they would have a better understanding and comprehension of the New York State ELA module,” said Belmont fourth-grade teacher Gina Petraglia.

HALLOWEEN ON PARADE - Familiar children’s book characters, superheroes and a few spooky figures were the talk of the town when Babylon Elementary School students and staff members took part in the building’s annual Halloween Parade.

Dressed in creative costumes, students and staff marched around the school’s front circle, waving proudly at cheering family members.
