On Saturday November 23rd and Sunday November 24th, members of the North Babylon Lions Club and the North Babylon Athletic Club will take to the fields of North Babylon High School and Robert Moses Middle School to raise funds and Promote Youth Lacrosse. Funds collected will be used to help local food pantries support local families in need. Some of the other projects that the funds will support are subsidizing Youth Lacrosse programs. Continuation of granting Scholarships to local youth, and providing resources to individuals who are visually impaired are also programs that will benefit from this great event. Mr. Edward Meinhold, President of the North Babylon Lions Club is excited to announce that every team that is participating is being asked to donate a food basket or bags of canned food and non-perishable items. The community is also being asked to bring these items to the Showmobile that will be parked in the vendor village behind the High School. NBAC Lacrosse Commissioner John Heegan explained that the tournament is divided into two days of competition. On Saturday, November 23rd starting from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., 2nd/3rd, 4th, 5th & 6th Grade will be playing. On Sunday, November 24th, 7th, 8th and JV will be playing. Red Ribbon Week is a national campaign held each year to raise awareness about drug prevention in the community. In an effort to include the children in the fight against drugs, October 21st through October 25th, they are celebrating this year’s theme “A Healthy Me Is Drug Free.” The PTA Red Ribbon Committee organized a week of activities, which began on Monday, October

21st at 10 a.m. with a ceremony held on the blacktop between JFK and South Bay Schools. The students gathered and pledged to remain healthy and drug-free. All parents, family members and friends were invited to attend the ceremony and join in the fight against drugs. Everyone was asked to wear RED on this day to support this worthy cause, and to bring attention to the importance of this

pledge. Throughout the week, the school is decorated and each day the students received takehome reminders about being drug-free. They encouraged the students to wear their JFK spirit wear or their favorite team apparel to help “Team Up Against Drugs,” on October 25th. The week was a success.

First it was small groups of college Journalism students at my alma mater, then it progressed to high school newspaper staffs at an awards ceremony… and now add an elementary school newspaper club to my public speaking repertoire. Who would have thought? There was a time when the mere mention of the dreaded words, “oral presentation,” would strike a chord of fear deep within. As soon as the syllabus for the year was handed out back in high school and college, the anxiety began. What would I say? Would I use note cards and attempt to ad lib? Should I write out each word and read from it, never daring to glance up or make

eye contact with my audience? What if I just “winged” it, as they say, and worked it all out on the spot? Well, with rare exception, I can pretty much assure you that two of the three options NEVER happened. Rather, I was a big fan of: write it out, rehearse it to the point of practically memorizing every line anyway, but don’t dare stray from the script – after all, you might mess it up, miss a word, lose your place, whatever… and we couldn’t have that! What captivating presentations they must have been. Fast forward to the present day when, by virtue of my career, I have been afforded several opportunities to speak to those up-and-coming students in the field, ranging from the age of 8 to … whatever age it is college

students are these days. Me. Of all people. They must assume I can intelligently speak on things of a journalistic nature, having been employed in this area for the better part of the last nine years. And so, in the interest of evolving to meet these expectations, I have tentatively taken on these speaking engagements, preparing for each in my own unique way – and hoping, fingers crossed, that I can make an adequate impression. So far, so good. Practice does – eventually – make perfect. I will never possess the natural gift that others do; however, I no longer cringe at the prospect of an audience either. I suppose it’s fortunate that the majority of my job can be conducted via the written word.

West Babylon School District celebrated Homecoming on October 19th, kicking off the day’s festivities with a parade, followed by a football game and the school’s Homecoming dance. The annual parade began at West Babylon High School with the West Babylon Fire Department leading the way. The high school marching band performed while the student floats made their way down the street. The senior and sophomore classes created a city landscape while the junior and freshmen classes made a beach and ocean landscape. Following the student floats were the members of the homecoming court, including Homecoming King John Modica and Queen Madeline Vasquez, and the West Babylon cheerleaders. The parade came to an end when it reached West Babylon Junior High School for the homecoming football game. Following West Babylon tradition, West Babylon

Homecoming Celebration elementary school students took to the field prior to U.S. Army color guard made their way onto the field for kickoff, running from the end zone to the 50-yard line the national anthem. The West Babylon varsity football team put forth a valiant effort in the contest against West Islip’s squad, but the end result was a loss for the Eagles. LaValle Stadium, where the Stony Brook Sea Wolves game against the Albany Great Danes will begin at 1 p.m. Long Islanders are asked to donate frozen turkeys, non-perishable food items or cash donations, which will help Island Harvest supply meals to the over 300,000 hungry Long Islanders in need, including the thousands of Hurricane Sandy victims still facing hardship. “Each year the turkey drive has grown to what is now considered the largest on-site food drive on Long Island and so we are thrilled this year to expand even more by partnering with Stony Brook University to offer a drop off location for Suffolk County residents,” says Linda Armyn, Senior Vice President of Corporate Strategy, Bethpage. “This year also commemorates our fifth year working to

Taking the first steps to address the schools’ significant facilities and infrastructure needs, the Babylon School District Board of Education has unanimously approved a bond resolution outlining a major facilities improvement plan. With the Board’s approval, the $26.6 million project will now be put before voters on Tuesday, December 10th. If approved by the community, each of the district’s three schools will see aging building systems replaced or renovated. The plan includes upgrades to roofs, heating and ventilation systems,

electrical systems, and numerous other areas of building integrity. Projects will also address significant health, security and safety needs, as well as ADA compliance factors. Instructional spaces, including science labs, technology workshops and art classrooms, will receive upgrades to meet the district’s curriculum focus on science, technology, engineering, the arts and mathematics. The high school’s antiquated band room, chorus room and ancillary spaces will also be completely renovated and major updates will be made to Rowe Hall, which is not only used regularly
