Harry Stands Alone By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Unfortunately, following last week’s printing, Harvey the Goldfish succumbed to… well, whatever it is carnival goldfish often succumb to, only five days after his “adoption” into my home. He didn’t live to see his name in print, but I’m sure he would appreciate all the condolences received upon his untimely passing.

Harry, his fishbowl buddy and hide-and-seek companion, seems to be holding up quite well.

Perhaps he had something to do with Harvey’s demise.

Maybe he prefers the solitude. After all, that tree is really only big enough for one average-sized goldfish to hide behind at a time.

I contemplated buying Harry a new friend, but I’m a bit hesitant. Rarely has a fish seemed so lively, so content, so vivacious – darting to and fro, bouncing off the sides of the bowl. I half expect to find him lying on the counter one morning, fins up, as a result of diving headfirst over the edge.

I suppose I must look gigantic to him, magnified through the bowl, looming

over his tropical sanctuary.

And yet there are times when I’m standing at the counter, preparing dinner, and he will come and press his face against the glass, eagerly watching my every move as if to say, What are you making? Is it for me?

Can I have some? Please??

And so, once again, as of this writing, Harry is living happily – whatever “happy” is for a goldfish.

I’ll leave him on his own for a while, King of the Bowl, and see how it goes.

In the meantime, I’ll bring home a copy of my column for him to read.

DeBiccari raised more than $400 for Child Abuse Prevention Services, a child abuse prevention

resource and provider of violence prevention and child safety education.

FBI Program Completed North Babylon High School freshman Margaret McKeever completed the Federal Bureau of Investigation Teen Academy, a program hosted by the New York field office of the FBI. McKeever was nominated and chosen to participate in the highly

selective four-day program.

Her grade point average, an essay and her community involvement helped her earn acceptance.

The FBI Teen Academy program teaches students about the mission of the FBI and the roles of its various divisions, including counterterrorism,

i n t e l l i g e n c e , counterintelligence and administrative. It is a hands-on program and offers the opportunity to learn from agents in the field about investigative tactics, including gathering evidence and solving cases.

Creativity abounded when Babylon Memorial Grade School sixth-grade students in Eric Solnick’s class took part in this year’s Global Cardboard Challenge.

The event was inspired by the documentary “Caine’s Arcade,” a 2012 film about a nine-year-old boy’s work to create an arcade out of cardboard at his father’s auto parts store in Los Angeles.

Working under the guidance of art teacher,

Patricia Stork and library media specialist Lisa Lindeman, students collaborated in small groups to plan, build and test arcade games.

In addition, the students worked with family and friends to create another smaller cardboard creation.

Throughout the project, they learned the real-world values of imagination, creativity, trial and error, and teamwork.

The class shared their original projects with

The event was sponsored by the Imagination Foundation, a nonprofit group aimed to find and foster creativity and entrepreneurship in children across the world.

This year’s event was comprised of over 106,000 participants from over 39 countries.

District Deputy, Carmine E. Soldano of the 8th NY District, officiated at the installation ceremony.

Education Conference Set The Department of Child Study at St. Joseph’s College (SJC), in conjunction with Family Residences and Essential Enterprises, Inc. (FREE), will host the conference, “Educating All: Addressing Issues and Overcoming Challenges” on Friday, November 7th from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on its Long Island Campus located in Patchogue, New York.

The keynote speaker for this year’s conference

is John Elder Robison, author and advocate.

Robison, who has autism spectrum disorder, is a Neurodiversity Scholar at the College of William and Mary in Williamsburg, Virginia.

He is a bestselling author of Look Me in the Eye, Be Different and Raising Cubby, which are the most popular books on living with autism spectrum disorders and will be available for purchase at the event. Robison will

also teach a workshop at the conference. He has been interviewed on CBS News, The Today Show and NPR. “This year’s conference will offer a variety of workshops on best practices and resources for educators and parents,” said S. Mary Ann Cashin, chair of the Department of Child Study at SJC. “We are eager to hear about John Elder Robison’s life experiences and how they

can influence services and intervention.”

This education conference will include workshops on timely teaching topics, such as multiple disabilities, inclusive approaches, transition, technology, positive approaches, behavioral challenges, Common Core/Opt-Out of Testing, and more.

Throughout the day, attendees will also have the opportunity to visit the Apps Café, view an

art exhibition and enjoy musical entertainment.

Supporters of CAPS teed off against child abuse and neglect at the 16th Annual Child Abuse Prevention Services (CAPS) Golf Outing at The Mill River Club in Oyster Bay raising $60,000 to benefit the CAPS Bully Prevention Center and CAPS’ prevention through education programs.

The event also saw the presentation of the 9th Annual John Davis Memorial Award to two long-time CAPS supporters, volunteers and past presidents of the CAPS Board of Directors, Nancy Greulich (Plainview) and Susan Silverman (Manhasset

The award, named for the founder of the CAPS Golf Outing and a former member of CAPS’ Executive Advisory Board, was given to Nancy and Susan in recognition of their commitment to the well-being and safety of Long Island’s children, which they have demonstrated in their work with CAPS for more than 10 years.
