Weathering the Storm By: Jamie Lynn Ryan There are few things as unpredictable, and beyond our control, as Mother Nature. If the past few years have taught us anything, it’s that hurricane season is not to be taken lightly. Gone are the days of “what are the odds” and “it’s never happened here” … turns out, “not always in your favor” and “now it has” are the answers to such rhetorical musings. Of course, most forecasts are still met with a healthy dose of skepticism, even in these parts of the region where that kind of cynicism resulted in some pretty substantial regrets not so long ago. Meteorologists’ predictions, coupled with dueling “models” mapping
out the potential track of various storm systems does not an exact science make. As a result, the tendency is to ignore such warnings until the eleventh hour and simply hope for the best. The same goes for blizzards, heat advisories … any natural occurrence that might interfere with our daily lives. How dare something as trivial as weather affect our schedules. Until it does. And we are completely unprepared. I will fully admit that I am guilty of such dismissiveness as well. To me, unless I look outside and see it for myself, it’s not reliable information. I don’t see the point in inciting mass hysteria among the public based on a “hunch,” a “chance of” whatever. Show me rain and
wind and sleet and snow and blazing temperatures – maybe I’ll be convinced. Stupid? Sure, in those rare, extreme cases when the forecast is 100% accurate. But you won’t see me rushing out to buy milk and eggs and bread on a whim. Because guess what? When the power goes out, no one’s making French toast. The way I see it, owning a shovel, keeping your gas tank above empty and stocking a few bottles of water and some nonperishables isn’t the kind of thing that should be necessitated by an emergency warning. It’s just practical common sense. If you need a meteorologist to instruct you in those types of preparations, well then, the weather isn’t your biggest concern.

“Please help. I’m alone and scared. I don’t know where I am or how long I have. I never meant for this to happen. All I wanted was to hang out with my friends at a party. None of this was supposed to happen... Help.” Chapter 1 “Hey guys! I got this invitation to a ghost party... get your best white bed sheet out and get your party on!” I said to my friends over the phone. Emma responded “nice” and laughed. Joseph responded, “Got my sheet out and ready!” Alison responded with a laugh. Jonathan responded with, “Sure, if there is candy corn, I’ll be there!” and laughed. Ian responded, “Where is this party? And yes, definitely coming, just
wanna know!” “Ummm...it is on Maple Street...no definite address. We will find it. Gotta be the one with a bunch of cars, lights and music,” I said. They all responded with ok. “Meet me at my house in ten,” I said. Alison said, “Scare ya later,” and we all hung up to get ready. I didn’t want to wear a bed sheet because it seemed too old-fashioned so I put on an all-white outfit, black makeup on my eyes and half red, half black lipstick and some white shoes. My friends all arrived around the same time. We all said hello, got a quick snack before we left, got into my car and left for the party. Chapter 2 It didn’t take long to find the house the party was being
hosted at. We stepped in and were greeted by our host, Jackson. Jackson didn’t seem as normal as the rest. It was a pretty normal party - singing, dancing, eating, talking. But then something happened that changed all that. Jackson came up running toward us in what seemed like fear. After he ran past us, the lights started flickering. At first, we thought it was a joke. Everyone looked around for light switches and soon found out that the lights were fake lights that were put up as decorations for the party, and didn’t even have real light bulbs to light it up. At that time, everyone started to panic. Then a voice came out of nowhere. And then he came. And then IT came.

DoubleHeader Event On Saturday, October 24th, the women of the Strong Island Derby Revolution (SIDR) will close out their 2015 season with a double header event. First The Revolution will battle it out with The Backyard Bullies from Yonkers, NY. “This is by far one of the most physical teams we’ve played to date so it’s always an exciting time for fans,” said Doc Block coach of the Strong Island Revolution. Next up, The Slaughters of the Revolution will face off against the Mid-Hudson Misfits, from Accord, NY. “The Slaughters are coming off a win and are looking to keep the momentum going” said Allison Hardy, Captain of the Slaughters. These exciting bouts will take place at Strong Island’s home rink World Gym Racquet & Sports Arena located at 384 Mark Tree Road in East Setauket. In addition to hard hitting roller derby, the event features halftime entertainment, grass fed burgers and other menu items from Eat me Drink me food truck and cold craft beer provided by sponsor Greenport Harbor Brewery. Fans who like to get close to the action are encouraged to bring a chair for trackside seating. Roller Derby’s first World Cup was held in Toronto in December 2011 and the Fédéracion Internacional de Roller Sports (FIRS), recognized by the International Olympic Committee as governing body of roller sports, has added roller derby to its list of disciplines and the sport will be featured in the first World Roller Games to take place in Barcelona in 2017. Modern roller Derby teams (including SIDR) are DIY organizations with skaters not only training hard on the track but also running the business side, doing everything from securing venues to selling tickets and designing merchandise. Art Dept Grant North Babylon High School has been awarded a Student Achievement Grant that will be used to continue expanding the art department’s exceptional outreach and array of opportunities for students. To address the implementation of the National Core Art Standards, the $2,000 grant
— awarded by the NEA Foundation — will be used to create a professional art gallery at the school. Students will create various works and develop their art interpretation skills by learning how to best gain insight into the meaning of art and art criticism. The students will also have opportunities
to present their artwork to the community for the purpose of audience analysis, evaluation and appreciation. The district’s application and plans for the grant reflects its commitment to continuing to provide an extensive education for students.

International Peace Day
Schools throughout the West Babylon School District marked International Peace Day on September 21st by taking part in a variety of different activities. Students from Santapogue Elementary School celebrated by creating and planting pinwheels – a recognized symbol of the day – in the school’s inner courtyard. The original pinwheels created a giant peace symbol outside the school. West Babylon Junior High School’s Community Service Club and several
sixth-grade art classes planted a similar display at the front entrance of the school. “Pinwheels for Peace enables the students to participate in a real world way in promoting peace at our school,” said Santapogue Elementary School Principal Eleanor Levy. “The students were so proud of their artwork and how the pinwheels looked on display.” At Forest Avenue Elementary School, students participated in a Pinwheels for Peace assembly. During the

program, Principal Patricia Acocella spoke about the meaning of peace and students held up pinwheels to symbolize their personal commitment to making the world a more peaceful place while reciting the “Kid’s Peace Song.” South Bay Elementary School recognized the day by crafting peace signs, singing songs and creating colorful pinwheels. Firstgraders read stories about being peaceful while fifthgraders came together to create a peace tree consisting of individual thumbprints.

Dressed in blue and white, hundreds of students, faculty, families and community residents gathered for homecoming at North Babylon High School on September 26th, a gorgeous Saturday afternoon full of football, food, fun and festivities. The day was filled with various activities for the school and surrounding community to take part in together. A school-spirited parade, led by the North Babylon School District
Board of Education and central administration, kicked off the afternoon in preparation for the Bulldogs’ game against the Smithtown East Bulls. The school’s cheerleaders, marching band and representatives from the freshman, sophomore, junior and senior classes, as well as from all other schools in the district, proudly displayed their school spirit for all who lined the sidewalks to support their team.
With the marching band and cheerleaders performing to perfection during pregame rituals, in between plays and during halftime, the Bulldogs played passionately and precisely to win the game, 54-6. The audience who had filled the bleachers to capacity cheered the Bulldogs’ every excellent play execution, stood behind their team and applauded the efforts of their opponent, as well.
Staging the Change Theatre students at North Babylon High School have been invited to perform monologues at the annual Stage the Change conference on November 7th. Stage the Change, which features theatrical performances based on social action, will host the students at the Tilles Center for the Performing Arts at LIU Post. As part
of an assignment in Lisa Drance’s Theatre II class, the students wrote individual scripts in class based on the theme “Equality: A Possibility or a Dream?” Following rewrites, the students worked in groups and read each other’s work, ultimately choosing to submit student playwright Krista Schmitt’s one-act titled “Euphoria.” Schmitt
worked with classmates Brianna Delacruz, Mackenzie Cosentino, Ivana Rahaman, Natalie Urban and Zara Zulquar. The invitation to perform at the conference is a testament not only to the remarkable work of the students, but also to the quality of theatre education they are receiving.

Students and staff members at Woods Road Elementary School in the North Babylon School District showed their support for fighting pediatric cancer by participating in interactive team-building physical activities. The Woods Road community was encouraged to participate in the activities while wearing gold shoelaces
— part of the Lace Up 4 Pediatric Cancer initiative — that they purchased for $5. All funds raised were donated to local children at North Shore LIJ Hospital, in addition to grants for children in hospitals and toward grant wishes to families. They participated in activities such as yoga, hula hooping and tugof-war, and were taught the importance of eating healthy foods by enjoying

Coffee & Conversations Babylon School District Superintendent of School Linda Rozzi has launched a new initiative this fall, aimed at making strong connections with the district’s parents and community. The program, called “Coffee with the Superintendent,” commenced on September 21st in the Babylon Elementary School library and subsequent discussions are scheduled throughout the year. The focus of the event was to meet with Babylon residents in a casual atmosphere and have an open conversation about happenings in the district, answer questions and concerns as well as open
the lines of communication with the community. “As parents and community partners, you are the best advocates for our students,” said Rozzi. “I am so thrilled to join the Babylon School District and look forward to working together to advocate for our children.” In her first few months as superintendent, Rozzi has been working with the Board of Education, administrators and members of the teaching staff to craft seven priorities for the district. During the event, she gave parents a brief overall of the goals, which include instruction and learning; school safety and security;

fiscal responsibility; t e c h n o l o g i c a l a d v a n c e m e n t s ; professional development; community relations and communication; and facilities. An in-depth discussion of the goals will be presented during the district’s October 19th Board of Education meeting. “I think we had a nice turnout for the first event and this type of environment helps to open up the dialogue between the district and its adult partners,” Rozzi said. The next “Coffee with the Superintendent” will be held on November 12th at Babylon Junior-Senior High School.
Scholars & Success
Voiced to Perfection Twenty-five members of North Babylon High School’s Class of 2016 have earned the designation of Advanced Placement Scholar from the College Board due to their exceptional performances on the college-level Advanced-Placement exams. The College Board recognizes several levels of achievement based on student’s performance on AP exams. Three students were named AP Scholars with Distinction. Four students were named AP Scholars with Honor and 18 were designated as AP Scholars.
AP Scholar with Distinction is awarded to students who earn an average score of 3.5 on all AP, and scores of 3 or higher on five or more of these exams. The three students who earned this designation are Joseph DeBlasi, Brandon Drew and Alonzo Tabada. The AP Scholar with Honor award was earned by students Laura Losco, Nina Eleanor Malusay, Raphael Pido and Shauneil Williams, each of whom scored at least 3.25 on all AP exams taken, and scores of 3 or higher on four or more of these exams. The 18 students who

High School Homecoming Parade on Saturday, September 26th. Beginning on Garnet Street with the Suffolk County Police Department and the North Babylon Fire Department leading the way, “Bulldog Pride” was evident as spectators filled

Recently, Sheriff Vincent F. DeMarco played host to a large contingent of officials from the New York City Department of Correction and Riker’s Island, New York City’s main jail complex. The group visited the Suffolk County Correctional Facility to learn more about DeMarco’s correctional programs – in particular, the award winning Council for Unity and Youth Tier programs. This is the second time that Riker’s officials have come to the jail in the past year. Commissioner Joseph Ponte and members of his staff visited Riverhead last September to discuss correctional reforms. The visit comes at a time of heightened focus on issues related to crime reduction strategies and prisoner rehabilitation, and Ponte’s well-publicized goals to implement changes at Riker’s Island to help reduce violence. According to DeMarco, the goals are intertwined. “One of the lessons we have learned is that if your focus is reducing inmate violence, you need to have programs in place to combat gang activity. Programs like Council for Unity encourage these youth to drop their colors and many of them continue to stay connected with the Council once they’re released. Ultimately this is what it’s all about. We want to transition these kids back into the community and help them lead more productive lives. The jail is safer, the community is safer, and in the long run the taxpayers benefit because they don’t have to foot the cost of these youth cycling in and out of jail and prison,” said DeMarco.
Commissioner Ponte stated, “We are pleased to have this opportunity to learn about these groundbreaking programs from Sheriff DeMarco and his Office and are eager to apply their insights to help reduce violence in our facilities. DOC staff has traveled to many jurisdictions in order to absorb best practices in our drive to become a national leader of correctional reform, especially in regard to adolescents and young adults.”
Sheriff DeMarco implemented Council for Unity at the Suffolk County Jail shortly after he took office in 2006 in an effort to reduce gang violence in the Riverhead Jail. It was the first correctional facility to embrace the program, which was developed by Robert DeSena nearly 40 years ago as a method to reduce gang-related crime in New York City schools. During their visit, the group met with some young
inmates, between the ages of 16 and 21, as they participated in a session of Council for Unity inside the Jail’s Chapel. Following the presentation, DeSena stated, “Sheriff DeMarco has made it a priority to reduce inmate violence and quell gang activity both inside and outside the correctional facility. Council for Unity is a proven methodology for diverting youth and adults from gangs, but also in regard to preventing future delinquency. I think the corrections community has now seen the effectiveness of this approach and they want to implement Riverhead’s model program.” The County Sheriff has been at the forefront of a national trend towards developing effective inmate rehabilitation programs and coordinating communitybased services for individuals reentering our communities after spending time in jail. Due in part to these efforts, there has been a significant decrease in the county jail population since he first took office. In 2005, the daily jail population averaged close to 2000 inmates, and now that figure is less than 1400. In 2011, Sheriff DeMarco launched the Youth Tier and Youth Reentry Task Force Initiative to improve outcomes for incarcerated youth in the county jails, and the award-winning program has become a national model in the field of corrections. He also serves as the Chair of the Criminal Justice Coordinating Council where he has been working to improve coordination across the law enforcement continuum.

The Long Island Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence (LICADD) received a $5,265 donation from 115 friends and family members in memory of Daniel Grym, 19 of Bellmore, who passed away from the effects of a heroin and benzodiazepine overdose on January 8th, 2015. Daniel’s older brother and only sibling, Kenny, passed away 5 years ago on the same date from a
heroin overdose. With the heroin and opiate crisis raging, the demand for LICADD’s services has increased exponentially. Significant price drops in the street price of heroin on Long Island, have increased the number of young people who are using the drug. Calls to LICADD’s hotlines and requests for services mirror these increasing trends and beyond the sheer rise in numbers of young
people and their families seeking heroin addiction treatment services, the rapid progression from snorting to injecting the drug is startling and obviously increases the potential health consequences for users. This significant donation assists the Long Island community by providing additional services for families in desperate need of LICADD’s services. A counseling office in
