Retrospect By: Jamie Lynn Ryan I’ve been reflecting on my high school days quite a bit lately. Maybe it’s the back to school fever in the air, the specter of autumn and homecoming celebrations on the horizon… or perhaps the fact that I have seen more fellow graduates and former teachers in the last several weeks than I have, well, probably over the last five years.

Not that reminiscing is anything new for me, per se, but I suppose the more you reconnect, the more vibrant the faded memories become. What were once old snapshots and slightly dogeared pages of a yearbook are brought to life once again, conjuring happy thoughts of days gone by.

Sure, life has gone on since then and taken us with it in various directions; but there is still something about those good old high school days that brings a smile to the face, mine anyway. They say some of the best friendships are forged during those formative years and that, if you hold on to even a handful of them, you should consider yourself extremely lucky.

I tend to agree. As much as we have all moved on – with some pursuing college degrees and careers, others settling down to start a family, and still others on a path all their own – there is a part of me that believes, deep down, we are all simply trying to reclaim that lost innocence of youth, of days when life seemed simpler

Call me crazy, but who among us wouldn’t love to have just a bit of that back?

Here’s to nostalgia… here’s to the good old days… here’s to taking a look in the mirror at who we’ve become, and realizing that, for better or worse, we all still resemble that 16 yearold sitting on the bleachers at Homecoming… or passing notes in the back of a classroom… or anxiously studying for exams wondering what the future years would bring.

Twenty-eight Babylon Junior-Senior High School current students and members of the Class of 2015 have been recognized as Advanced Placement Scholars by the College Board.

These honors were bestowed upon the students based on their exceptional achievement on the national AP exams.

“We are very proud of the 28 students who were honored as AP Scholars,” said Linda Rozzi, Babylon School District’s superintendent of schools.

“This recognition follows months of hard work and commitment to academics. I extend my congratulations to both the students and their teachers

who prepared them well for these exams.”

AP Scholar honors are awarded based on the number of exams taken and the students’ scores on those exams. Babylon students earned the following: • 21 students qualified for the AP Scholar Award by receiving a score of 3 or higher on three or more AP exams.

• 3 students — Ryan Cosgro, Adam Gumbardo and Sarah Mclean — qualified for the AP Scholar with Honor Award by earning an average grade of 3.25 on all AP exams taken and grades of 3 or higher on

Chosen for Honors four or more of those exams.

• 4 students — Mohankumar Chintarlapalli, Sam Dickran, Ronald Pashen and William Ye — qualified for the AP Scholar with Distinction Award by earning an average grade of at least 3.5 on all AP exams taken and grades of 4 or higher on five or more of these exams.

Seven student-musicians from Babylon High School have been selected to participate in the 2015 NYSCAME/SCMEA AllCounty Music Festival and the NYSSMA All-State Festival.

Selection to a NYSCAME/ SCMEA All-County music organization is one of the most prestigious honors in Suffolk County for a student-musician.

Students will perform in the NYSCAME/SCMEA All-County Concert in November.

Each year, All-State musicians are selected from an array of more than 7,000 of the finest

high school musicians in New York State. This selection is extremely competitive and is based upon a student’s superior score at the NYSSMA solo festival and teacher recommendation. All-State student ensembles will perform at the NYSSMA 2015 Winter Conference in Rochester, New York, from Dec. 3-6.

Celebrating a Decade New York Jets legend and Pro Football Hall of Famer Joe Namath hosted his 11th March of Dimes Celebrity Golf Classic on Thursday, September 17th, on Long Island. This year’s event attracted nearly 100 entertainment and sports celebrities, including 30 Hall of Famers from football, baseball, hockey and basketball.

Held on four golf courses at Bethpage State

Park (Home of past U.S. Opens, as well as future host to the Ryder Cup and Barclays), the March of Dimes welcomed nearly 500 attendees to the tournament. The evening program was emceed by ESPN Sports Anchor Chris Berman and also featured entertaining stand-up comedy from George Lopez.

Namath has been a long-time volunteer for

the March of Dimes and since 1997 has helped raise over $30 million for the organization through events with him in the leadership role. His namesake Celebrity Golf Classic raised nearly $1.2 million this year, resulting in outstanding doubledigit, year-over-year growth.

On Saturday, September 19th, the Town of Babylon hosted the first annual “Kayaking for a Cause” event at Cedar Beach Marina, bringing over 50 kayakers out to paddle in support of Amityville’s Hunter Squires Jackson American Legion Post 1218, which was recently damaged as a result of Superstorm Sandy and vandalism. The total amount raised for the local veterans topped $15,000, made up of registration fees from the event, contributions collected from local businesses and a large donation from Island Park based American Legion Post 1029.

“This event not only provided a great opportunity

for a fun-filled day on the water but also for us to give back to individuals who already gave so much for this country,” said Deputy Supervisor Tony Martinez, who organized the event. “I am proud that we were able to help the veterans of Hunter Squires Jackson Post 1218, as they work to get their building back to working condition.”

A ceremony was held to launch the kayakers at Cedar Beach Marina, where Deputy Supervisor Martinez welcomed visitors and Councilwoman Jackie Gordon, a retired Lt. Colonel of the United States Army Reserves, detailed the hardships that the Hunter Squires Jackson post has faced since their

facility was damaged. A check was presented to Post Commander Charlie Martin.

Those participating in the event launched their kayaks at 9:00 a.m. and embarked on one of three trails, depending on skill level: 2.5 miles for beginners, 3.5 for intermediate and 5.5 for advanced. Kayakers had the opportunity to explore little seen areas of the Great South Bay including views of Cedar Island and sights of marine wildlife, such as snowy egrets and blue herons. Following the tour, kayakers were invited to the Cedar Beach Hut to celebrate the day’s festivities with a free lunch.

The loss of innocence is a common, reoccurring theme in high-school level English literature. In Lord of the Flies by William Golding, for instance, loss of innocence is seen when Jack attempts to hunt and kill his first pig. In The Kite Runner, Hassan loses his innocence when he is raped by Assef in an alley. In the wellknown novel written by Mary Shelley, Frankenstein, the creature loses his innocence the day he was created, due to Victor abandoning him in his basement.

Loss of innocence is even prevalent in movies, such as in Alice in Wonderland, when Alice cluelessly drinks from the “drink me” glass. Some can even argue that she lost her innocence before that, when

she actually tumbled down the rabbit hole.

But is the theme of loss of innocence ubiquitous in only literature or cinemas? Not at all.

Loss of innocence is a real live thing that people experience daily. And with technology at our fingertips, we are exposed to this recurring theme at increasingly younger ages.

Television is vulgar and crude. Commercials are even shockingly inappropriate.

Reality TV is showcasing and glamorizing the downfall of society. Children are being exposed to this before they even leave elementary school.

Dropping the f-bomb doesn’t have the same shock value it did years ago. The idea of sex and sexual innuendos are thrown around. Children

see this, young adults see this - and it makes everything look like no big deal. No one is scared of anything anymore.

No one is innocent anymore. Everyone likes to say that they are, but no one truly is. Everyone has tried things they weren’t supposed to. Everyone has incorporated profane words into their daily vocabulary. We are exposed to this on television, so it’s grown to be acceptable.

To sum it up, loss of innocence is a common theme in English literature and Hollywood films. But now, with the help of constant, oneclick technology, we can all lose our innocence as young children.

And we can all do it together.

No white caps, only gurgling waves bubble along, A reminder of the well known swan song.

The sunset tops the peaks with shiny balls, Plentiful where the reflection of the rays now falls.

Just to watch how the water reflects the sun, This in itself is relaxing fun.

Fundraiser in Memory of Brittney The Brittney Walsh Memorial Fund, a nonprofit organization established to honor the memory of Brittney Walsh, is holding its 3rd Annual Bowling Fundraiser at Farmingdale Lanes on October 24th.

On June 24th, 2012, just two days after Brittney’s high school graduation, she was killed by a drunk driver. This tragic incident has left her family and friends in a great deal of pain. Long Islanders as a whole have expressed their grief, shock and sympathy.

The Brittney Walsh Memorial Fund has been designed to assist children just like Brittney - young people who excel in academics, push themselves to give 100% in sports and are active in school clubs. The goal

is to provide three high school seniors each year with scholarships to help make their futures a little brighter.

In the 18 years of her life, Brittney touched the hearts of so many people with her love, smile and generosity. With your help, she can continue to do so.

The family is asking businesses for their support in this fundraising endeavor. North Babylon’s Boy Scout Troop 399 began a tradition back in July of 1977 that still lasts today summer camp at Yawgoog!

The Troop attended Camp Yawgoog which is located in Rockville, Rhode Island the week of July 12th

through July 19th.

For Yawgoog’s 100th season, fourteen boys and six adults attended camp, the scouts earned 47 merit badges, two scouts advanced in rank, the troop earned honor troop, took 2nd place

like Too Good for Drugs seek to bolster children and young adults’ selfesteem, confidence and communication with peers and parents, before they are presented with the choice to use alcohol and drugs. Under the Student Assistance Program (SAP), these resources are available in schools throughout Long Island and continue to expand into new school districts each month. For young people displaying signs of alcohol and drug abuse, Teen Intervene offers a month-long combination of individual and parentpresent counseling sessions focused on charting a different direction that includes abstinence and healthier coping strategies.

These services are only a brief snapshot of the wide range of resources that LICADD provides: the agency conducts screenings, brief interventions, referrals to treatment (SBIRT) and relapse prevention services to individuals and families impacted by substance abuse. LICADD also offers evidence-based prevention programs, community outreach initiatives, a mentoring program for children of incarcerated parents, and advocates for comprehensive and responsible public policy related to addiction.

“Our clients are getting younger and younger as the number of teens affected by prescription drug, heroin and alcohol abuse continues to rise each day,” said LICADD Executive Director Steve Chassman, LCSW, CASAC. “The expanding need for services is staggering, and we are grateful that many community members came out today in support of Tee-Off for Our Teens.”

Still in Session Camp Pa-Qua-Tuck is once again offering its weekend respite program, extending the camp’s summer season to make it a year-round destination for children and young adults with disabilities.

The fall respite weekends available are as follows: October 2nd-4th, October 9th-11th, November 6th8th, November 20th-22nd, December 4th-6th, and December 18th-20th. Up to 20 campers ages six to 21

are invited to stay. Checkin is at 8 p.m. on Friday evening and campers leave at 3 p.m. on Sunday afternoon. During respite weekends, the camp will be staffed by Camp Pa-QuaTuck’s counselors and the camp nurse.

Campers can participate in various activities, including baking, arts and crafts, games, music and movies. There is a new theme each weekend.

Camp resources are packed

away until next summer, so campers’ families are reminded to pack sheets, blankets, pillows, towels and toiletries.

“We are excited to bring back this wonderful fall program,” says Camp Director Bridget Costello.

“Our camp is designed to give children and young adults the opportunity to be themselves, and parents a chance to relax while their sons and daughters have fun and are cared for

in a safe environment.”

The cost of each weekend for the remainder of 2015 (Friday to Sunday) is $350.

The camp requires a $50 deposit per session which is non-refundable unless registration is canceled 30 days prior to the session.

Three weeks remain for National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) insurance policyholders to submit their Hurricane Sandy Claims for review by the Federal Emergency Management Agency. The last day to submit claims is Thursday, October 15th.

The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development recently announced that any additional flood insurance proceeds up to $20,000 will not be treated as duplicative, and will not be recouped by HUD or its grantees. To date, approximately three out of four NFIP claimants have received less than $20,000 in additional compensation from FEMA, and will not face any possible repayment of HUD-funded grants.

Policyholders can call the NFIP’s Hurricane Sandy claims center at 866.337.4262 from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time (EDT), Monday through Friday, to request a review. It is important to have your policy number and insurance company name ready when you call. As of September 16th, more than 14,000 policyholders have requested reviews of their Sandy flood insurance claims.
