Two-hundred girls and families from 34 states, Canada and England will be in attendance as Curvy Girls Scoliosis Support hold their second biannual Convention on June 29th- July 1st, on Long Island. Founded in 2006 by then-13 yearold Smithtown, resident Leah Stoltz, Curvy Girls has successfully engaged hundreds of young girls and families in mutual support and advocacy activities through the experience of scoliosis. Scoliosis is the lateral bending and twisting of the spine that, when progressed, causes body deformities and compromises internal organs. It affects seven million people in the U.S. with a diagnosis most commonly occurring in pre-adolescence. The disease shows progression ten times more frequently in girls than boys. Curvy Girls groups provide peer-to-peer and family-

to-family support and information. Now 21 and graduating from American University with a degree in business and marketing, Leah helped her group to go global after she was featured on the first TeenNick HALO Awards – Helping And Leading Others – in 2009. Hosted by entertainer Nick Cannon, the show engages celebrities to honor teens who give back to their community while overcoming hardship. Leah was honored by singer/actor Justin Timberlake. With the help of this exposure, Curvy Girls has connected nearly three thousand affected girls through group meetings and social media., including 62 operating self-help groups - run by teens - that also operate in Brazil, Spain, and Australia. Curvy Girls is appreciative to their major Sponsor EOS Imaging for making it possible for girls

from around the world to be able to attend. Additional sponsors include Scoliosis Research Society, Long Island Spine Specialists, Bay Orthopedics, FOCOS (Foundation of Orthopedics and Complex Spine), Hanger Orthotics, and Transgenomic. The Convention will afford Curvy Girls the opportunity to celebrate the leadership and accomplishments of girls around the world as well as providing girls and families with emerging scientific and health information and the necessary skills to meet the distinct physical, social, and psychological challenges of this disease. Leah’s commitment to Curvy Girls goes beyond her own scoliosis, which was corrected with surgery 6 years ago. “I never want anyone to feel the way I did - alone and scared - so I am committed to empowering Curvy Girls around the world to know they are not alone.”

Usdan Center’s other previous professional education workshops have included Usdan Dance Chair Maurice Brandon Curry’s curriculum development instruction for ballet and jazz teachers; Angelo Truglio’s I Can Do That! Kids!, motivational techniques for music students; and Elaine Gates’ classes for integrating music into learning for 6 and 7-yearolds and for teaching choral music. In addition, Usdan Center presented the first New York Statewide Music Education Technology Conference on Long Island, which was attended by teachers from throughout New York State.

There is a video making its rounds on the social media circuit, showcasing what can only be described as the sorry state of our education system. One after another, various beachgoers were interviewed on the shores of our very own Jones Beach over this past Memorial Day weekend, asked questions ranging from “Who did we fight in the Revolutionary War?” to “What side of the Civil War was Abraham Lincoln associated with?” to “What country attacked us at Pearl Harbor?” The answers? Some of the best gems were “France” (our opponents in the War for Independence), “The South” (50/50 shot, people) and every nation from “China” to “Russia” to “Korea” to, you

guessed it, “France.” So much for the “date which will live in infamy,” right? And all this was to determine who, if anyone, could explain why we began commemorating Memorial Day in the first place. Judging by the aforementioned answers, not too many history buffs among us. The best part was that most, if not all, of the interviewees were clearly high school or college age, leading to the question: what exactly are they learning in school these days? Sure, I can’t tell you the details of every historical event which occurred over the course of the last several centuries, but the basics? Those are pretty hard to forget. And when I was actually in school, studying for exams every other week and writing term papers on such topics? It would have been difficult not to retain at least something, anything.

It’s a sad state of affairs when you are blissfully ignorant of your own nation’s battle for independence and how you came to enjoy such freedoms as frolicking on the beach on a “holiday” weekend, having no clue how such occasion came into fruition. Sure it’s funny and entertaining to watch as you’re scrolling through the Facebook newsfeed; but when you take a step back and realize that these are the people with whom you coexist on a daily basis, some from your own generation, it becomes pretty disconcerting. I wonder how many of these individuals grabbed their smartphones and Googled the answers following their failed interviews. For those keeping score at home: 1.) Britain, 2.) North and 3.) Japan. They may want to grab a history book and fill in the rest.

January of this year, along with fifth grade students working alongside them as interns in training for the start of next year’s program. Together with Catholic Middle Schoolers from 15 other schools around Long Island, SSCM students showcased their ability to think on their feet and analyze complex situations while questioning witnesses and taking their mock oaths quite seriously. All in all, with an early morning wake-up call on a Saturday for the hundreds of students and families who participate, this day is worth every minute of lost Saturday morning sleep and a great debt of gratitude is owed to those who selflessly take the time to coach the students, organize the event and give of their valuable time to invest in the future of these hard-working middle school children from Catholic Schools throughout the island. Justice well-served!

Enjoy The Fresh Air Continued From 9 experience simple pleasures like running barefoot through the grass, swimming in a cool lake, and gazing at starfilled skies. Through the eyes of Fresh Air children, families often rediscover the beauty of their own communities. “The Fresh Air Fund is an incredible gift for the whole family. We grow and adapt to learn different perspectives that remind us that the simplest things can make a huge difference,” says Michelle, a Fresh Air host. The artistic works of 21 Babylon Memorial Grade School and Junior Senior High School students was showcased and honored at this year’s NYSATA portfolio day. During this competitive contest, each Babylon student received the highest rating of “distinguished” and will have one of their pieces displayed at the in the NYSATA region 10 art show at Dowling College in the Anthony Giordano Gallery. For their entrance into the program, each student had to submit a portfolio of their original pieces. For the elementary and middle levels (junior high), the students created five pieces. For commencement (studio 1 or 2), they created six. For elective (studio 3 or 4), they created seven, and for major sequence (studio 4 or 5), they created eight pieces, which included a concentration. All

During the program, they spoke to a judge about their artwork and then received a rating on the whole portfolio. Memorial Golf Outing On Monday, July 14th, Alzheimer’s Disease Resource Center, Inc. (ADRC) will host its 4th Annual Kenneth F. Lawlor Memorial Golf Classic and Dinner at the Huntington Country Club, located at 483 West Main Street in Huntington. Registration begins at 9:30 a.m., followed by a brunch at 10 a.m. At noon, there will be a barbeque lunch and shotgun start. The cocktail reception will start at 5 p.m., followed by a dinner, program, trophies and raffles. Golfers will also have the chance to win a car in the Hole-In-One Challenge. This year’s honoree will be Ron J. Eagar, CPA, CCIFP, Partner of Grassi and Co. Mr. Eagar has become a renowned advisor in many industries, including real estate, construction, wholesale distribution, transportation, and notfor-profits. He uses his wide range of knowledge to assist not-for-profits through the strenuous

process of SarbanesOxley compliance. In addition to being involved in accounting and trade industry associations, Mr. Eagar plays an active role in his community by supporting philanthropic organizations. All proceeds from the event will go to support ADRC, home of the Mickey & Felice Neuwirth Care Center. The event is named after Col. Kenneth F. Lawlor, who was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s Disease in the last years of his life. His grandson, Keith Lawlor, who chairs ADRC’s Golf Classic Committee, is also Vice President of ADRC’s Board of Directors. S p o n s o r s h i p opportunities and foursomes are available. For more information, or to make your reservation, please contact Mary Ann Malack-Ragona, Executive Director/CEO, at 631.820.8068 or visit www.adrcinc.org and click on the link for the Golf Classic.

LI Shakespeare Festival Falstaff at the height of his rowdy and bawdy powers. The delinquent Prince Hal, the fiery Hotspur, and a host of nobles and ne’erdo-wells make for a stirring and exuberant evening of theatre where fact and fiction blend seamlessly under Shakespeare’s sure hand as he paints the portrait of a young prince’s reformation and ascent to manhood. The public is encouraged to bring a chair or blanket to one of the upcoming

performances: July 2nd, 3rd, 5th, 10th, 11th and 12th at 8 p.m. outdoors (indoors if inclement weather). Matinees: July 6th, 9th and 13th, at 2 p.m. indoors in the Shea Theatre. Outdoor performances are conducted behind the Islip Arts Building. For further information please call the LISF office 631.451.4163 or on the web at LIShakes.org.

By: Dawn DiAngelo, Ronkonkoma A crisp autumn day beckons. A walk along the shore Celebrates its arrival. We begin the journey together, You in the winter of life And I in the spring. You marvel at the earthly colors Nature in its finest hour Calls to you in all its splendor.

Time is not your ally. Your eyes behold the orange Glow of radiance and light. Your ears strain to hear The ripple of the ocean. The westerly wind reminds us We have come far enough. You stop and I wait.

In My Eyes By: Diane Sciacchitano, North Massapequa She was adored and admired by family and friends She was an icon in her own right She was sassy and classy Sympathetic and authentic She was smart with a loving heart She was adventurous She was spontaneous She was all about family and making memories I adored her I implored her Don’t go, auntie, but alas, it was her time You reside within my heart And for now, we must part Thank you for making the ‘dash’ during your lifetime So meaningful to all who were blessed to have known you.

Tales Come To Life Babylon Elementary School first-grade students in Leah Weissinger’s class brought several familiar stories to life as a culminating activity to their English language arts study of folktales. As part of the Common Core curriculum and reader’s theater workshop, the students learned about the literary genre and the

morals that these pieces teach readers. They focused on the famous tales of “Too Much Noise!,” “The Boy Who Cried Wolf,” and “The Little Red Hen.” In addition to the literacy study of the pieces, the students also worked to strengthen their fluency, reading comprehension, expression and public speaking skills, and they

transformed the written word into three short plays. During the performances, which were held during the day for students and at night for families, each student assumed the role of one of the folktale characters and shared the tale’s age-old lessons with audiences.

Babylon’s Memorial Grade School and JuniorSenior High School joined the fight against ALS this spring by raising funds for Ride for Life, a not-forprofit corporation. Each May, during ALS Awareness Month, ALS patients ride their electric wheelchairs for multiple days down the highways and byways to raise funds for a cure and to create awareness about ALS during Ride for Life. To date, the venture has raised more than $7 million. Grade School, students participated in a walka-thon and teachers made donations for a dress down day. The high school coordinated a number of fundraisers for the program, including the Leo Club selling bracelets and pins, the faculty participating in dress down day, two video game tournaments and a student council organized PowderPuff football game. Additionally, child psychology class members also secured scholarship money for the walk.

More than $1,000 was collectively raised. Students at both schools lined the streets in front of their building to show support for the ride as it passed through Babylon in mid-May. Students created colorful signs and chanted for a cure for the disease. Members of the Babylon High School child psychology class also joined the marchers and paraded through a portion of the village to show their continued support for the effort.

The multi-disciplinary

project enabled the students to practice the writing process – from creating drafts to editing – and sample the publishing process as they transformed their short stories into a book. An evening focused on physical activity, health and wellness drew more than 700 West Babylon residents to the 10th annual Fun Run and Fitness Fair. Organized by the district’s Wellness Committee and PTA Council, the district hosted an array of activities to support the overall health and fitness of students and community members. Some of the activities included lessons in paddle

boarding, yoga, Frisbee toss, relay races, and more. In addition, there were vendors from the community who discussed healthy lifestyle options and organized races for students and adults, as well as free raffles for summer camps and sport registrations. “The district would like to thank the members of the Wellness Committee – which is comprised of administrators, teachers,

and parents – for their tremendous efforts in planning this event,” said Christine Tona, executive director for curriculum and instruction. “It was wonderful to see students, family and staff come together to share an evening focused on physical activity, health, wellness options and community spirit.” The district congratulates the following Fun Run winners:

Allison and Liam Henshaw • Third grade – Ryan Adams and Sarah Goebl • Fourth/fifth grade – Giselle Amaya and Michael Mazzilli • Sixth grade – Kyle Adams and Amirah Jarrett • Seventh/eighth grade

– Nadja Ashley, Trent Boock and Allan MacKay (boys tied) • HS (grades 9-12) – Sabrina Esposito and Jon Flores • Adults – Danielle Richert (district PE teacher) and Royce Ukpabia
